That separates a single-site problem from a browser or network problem. Next, clear the affected site’s cached data, temporarily disable VPN and extensions, update Opera Air, and test hardware acceleration if the window freezes or media renders badly. Use Opera’s Recovery tools only after protecting bookmarks and passwords; reinstall cleanly if recovery does not help.
Start by identifying the scope of the failure
Do not begin by deleting all browser data. The fastest fix depends on whether one website is failing, every website is slow, or the page opens but Opera Air becomes unresponsive.

A failure on one site is not proof that Opera Air is broken. The website may be down, its DNS record may be stale, or its security policy may reject a connection. Conversely, if multiple unrelated domains fail in both normal and private windows, focus on the browser, VPN, local network, or operating system rather than repeatedly refreshing one page.
Use a private window as a diagnostic control
Opera’s unavailable-page guidance says to open the same page in a private window with Ctrl + Shift + N on Windows or Linux, or Command + Shift + N on macOS. Enter the URL manually and compare the result with a normal window.

- Keep the original normal-window tab open so you can compare behavior.
- Open the private-window shortcut.
- Visit the exact failing URL, including its path, rather than only the site’s home page.
- Wait for the same amount of time in both windows and note the exact result or error text.
If the page works privately, stored cookies, site data, or an extension is a strong suspect. Private mode does not prove which one is responsible; it is a controlled comparison that removes much of the normal profile state. If the page fails privately as well, continue with network, browser-update, and site checks instead of deleting cookies immediately.
Some sites require an account, a trusted device, or a particular cookie to function. A private window may therefore appear to “fail” simply because you are not signed in. Treat the test as useful evidence, not as a guaranteed reproduction of the normal session.
Clear only the data connected with the problem
Opera says cached files are temporary copies of website elements that can make repeat visits faster. A damaged or outdated copy can instead delay loading or prevent a page from rendering correctly. Cookies hold sign-in state and preferences, so removing them can sign you out and reset choices.
- Open Opera Air’s menu and choose Settings.
- Open Privacy and security.
- Select Clear browsing data. The shortcut is Ctrl + Shift + Del on Windows or Linux, or Command + Shift + Delete on macOS.
- Start by selecting cached images and files. Set the time range broad enough to include the failed visit, but avoid selecting passwords or autofill unless you have a specific reason.
- To target a single service, use the site-data controls to remove that site’s cookies and stored data, then reopen the page.
Targeted deletion preserves sessions on unrelated sites and makes the result easier to interpret. If the page still fails, you can widen the cleanup later. Opera also notes that clearing hosted-app data can reset data used by extensions; use that option only when an extension is part of the investigation.

What to expect after clearing data
- You may need to sign in again.
- Language, consent, shopping-cart, and display preferences may return to defaults.
- The first reload can be slower because the browser must download fresh files.
- Deleting cache does not repair a failed website, an offline connection, or a blocked DNS request.
Isolate VPNs, extensions, ad blockers, and tracker blockers
Opera explicitly recommends disabling its VPN when a page is unavailable. A VPN can change the route, DNS resolver, apparent country, or IP reputation seen by the website. The site may block that address even while other sites work.
- Turn the VPN off temporarily and reload the page.
- If the page opens, test another network or VPN location later rather than leaving the service permanently disabled if you need it for privacy.
- Open the extensions manager and disable one extension at a time.
- Reload after each change and record whether the page opens, becomes faster, or shows the same error.
- Pay particular attention to content filters, script controls, privacy tools, download managers, and extensions that modify headers or page scripts.
Changing one item at a time matters. Disabling everything at once may make the page work, but it will not tell you which setting caused the failure. Once you identify a culprit, update, reconfigure, or remove it rather than restoring every extension immediately.
For general speed, Opera recommends turning on its ad blocker and tracker blocker, removing extensions you no longer use, closing unused tabs, and clearing browsing data. Blocking advertising and tracking requests can reduce work on pages, but an over-aggressive rule can also break login forms, video players, payment pages, or navigation scripts. If a site fails only with a blocker enabled, add a narrowly scoped exception if the blocker provides that control, then retest.
Close resource-heavy tabs and check the network path
Many open tabs can consume memory and CPU even when you are not viewing them. Close tabs playing video or audio, dashboards that refresh continuously, and pages with large web applications. Reopen only the tabs needed for the test.

When several sites fail, compare Opera Air with another browser on the same computer. If both browsers fail, the issue is probably outside Opera Air: the Wi-Fi or wired connection, router, DNS service, firewall, captive portal, or the websites themselves. Restarting the router can refresh a stalled connection, but it will not fix a site outage or an account block.
If another browser reaches the same sites while Opera Air cannot, keep the comparison focused on Opera Air’s profile, VPN, extensions, and update state. If only one domain fails in every browser and on the same network, contact that site or wait for its service to recover rather than repeatedly resetting Opera.
Update Opera Air through Update & Recovery
Opera’s recovery guidance uses the Update & Recovery page to check for a current build. Menu placement can differ by operating system and release, so the wording may not be identical on every installation.
- Open the Opera Air menu.
- Choose Update & Recovery (or the equivalent update entry shown in your build).
- Select Check for Update.
- Install any offered update and allow Opera Air to relaunch.
- Retry the same URL in a normal window and, if needed, in a private window.
Updating is especially important when a page began failing after an operating-system, graphics-driver, or website change. Record the version displayed on the update page before escalating so support can reproduce the problem. Do not assume that a fresh download is necessary before checking the built-in updater; a normal update preserves more of your existing setup.

Test hardware acceleration when the page opens but the browser misbehaves
Slow network loading and graphics problems look similar but need different treatment. If text eventually appears while the window freezes, scrolling is jerky, animations flicker, or video is distorted, test hardware acceleration.
- Open Settings in Opera Air.
- Open the System section.
- Find the hardware-acceleration option.
- If it is enabled, turn it off; if it is disabled, turn it on.
- Relaunch Opera Air when prompted and revisit the page.
Opera’s FAQ presents enabling or disabling hardware acceleration as a troubleshooting step, not as a guaranteed speed increase. The result depends on the graphics driver, operating system, and the page’s rendering technology. Keep the setting that produces stable scrolling and correct media output. If neither state helps, return to network and extension checks rather than repeatedly toggling it.

If updates, data cleanup, and isolation tests do not help, Opera Air’s Recovery workflow can reset problematic settings while offering a less destructive option. The recovery process can preserve personal data while resetting settings, disabling extensions, and clearing temporary data. This is useful when a profile setting or extension interaction is suspected.

- Write down important extension names and settings.
- Confirm that bookmarks and saved passwords are synchronized or export them using Opera’s available controls.
- Save any locally stored information that a website does not synchronize to your account.
- Keep a copy of the exact error message and affected URLs.
Run the least destructive recovery first
- Open the Opera Air menu and go to Update & Recovery.
- Choose the recovery option.
- Select the option that keeps personal data while resetting settings and disabling extensions, when offered.
- Restart Opera Air and test the failing pages before reinstalling extensions or restoring custom settings.
Re-enable extensions one at a time after a successful recovery. Restoring every extension and setting immediately can recreate the original fault and erase the diagnostic value of the reset.
Know what a full reset and clean reinstall remove
A full reset is substantially more destructive. Opera’s recovery documentation says the full reset deletes extensions, bookmarks, history, saved passwords, and temporary data. Do not choose it until you have confirmed synchronization or made exports you can actually open.
If restarting does not solve the problem, Opera recommends downloading and installing a clean version. A clean installation is appropriate when program files are damaged, updates repeatedly fail, or the browser behaves incorrectly even with a fresh profile. It should be the last local step, not the first response to one slow website.
- Confirm that bookmarks and passwords are synchronized or exported.
- Record the Opera Air version, operating system, and extensions you need to reinstall.
- Use Opera’s own uninstall or installation process for your operating system.
- Install a current clean copy, launch it without extensions, and test the affected sites.
- Restore data and extensions gradually, testing after each change.

Collect evidence before contacting Opera support
When the problem persists across the documented checks, submit a focused report through Opera’s official help and bug-reporting hub. Useful evidence is more actionable than a general statement that “the browser is slow.”
