If Onimusha: Way of the Sword crashes on startup or will not launch, first identify whether you installed it through Steam, Epic Games Store, or Microsoft Store/Xbox app. Capcom’s troubleshooting steps differ by storefront, and no single fix is guaranteed. Work through the checks below in order, changing only the settings relevant to your symptom.
Start with your storefront and the exact symptom
Note where you installed the game and what happens when you open it: does it close immediately, show an error, create a crash report, or reach a blank or flickering display? This helps you follow the correct instructions instead of applying launcher-specific steps to the wrong version.

Capcom’s official PC support FAQ provides separate guidance for Epic Games Store and Microsoft Store, while its Steam troubleshooting thread covers Steam users. Follow the section for your storefront and the steps that fit what you see.
Check that your PC meets the installed version’s requirements
Compare your computer with the system requirements on the storefront where you installed the game. Capcom warns that a PC below minimum requirements may have severe performance problems or fail to run, and requirements can change. The figures below are from the Steam listing as accessed in 2026; check the live listing before relying on them.

Work through the common launch and configuration checks
Check security software without leaving protection disabled
Capcom says security software can mistakenly block the game executable. As Capcom Customer Support puts it, “Some launching issues and frame rate drops may be attributed to certain security software preventing the game executable from launching due to a false-positive error.” Add only the specific trusted game and relevant launcher files or folders to your antivirus or firewall exclusions, following Capcom’s instructions for your storefront. Do not turn off protection indefinitely.

Update Windows and graphics drivers
Install available Windows updates and check for a current graphics driver from your GPU manufacturer. Capcom’s Steam thread reviewed in September 2026 lists NVIDIA GeForce driver 596.49 or later and AMD Radeon 26.5.1 or later; these are version-specific instructions, not permanent minimums. Check the live Capcom thread and the manufacturer’s current release information before using a particular version. If an eligible driver does not resolve the problem, Capcom suggests trying another supported version; clean installation is a further option in its guidance.

Make sure the game uses the intended GPU
On a laptop or multi-GPU system, check that Windows or the graphics control panel assigns the game to the high-performance GPU. Capcom notes that some laptop discrete GPUs and high-end integrated GPUs may not have been officially tested or supported. It also says a multi-GPU system may need its preferred GPU changed or an additional GPU disabled. In Windows, look for the game under Settings > System > Display > Graphics, then choose Options > High performance if that choice is available; labels can vary by Windows environment.

Verify the game files and check compatibility settings
Use the file-verification option in your actual storefront to check for damaged or missing game files. If compatibility mode was enabled for the game executable, Capcom recommends disabling it. Its Steam guidance also suggests trying administrator privileges for Steam or the game; use this as a troubleshooting check rather than a permanent change if it does not help.
Check power, background apps, overlays, and heat
Capcom lists power settings, running applications, overlays, and ventilation among its possible checks. Close unnecessary resource-heavy applications and temporarily disable overlays to see whether the launch behavior changes. Check that a laptop is connected to power and that the computer’s cooling vents are not obstructed. These checks are most relevant when the game begins to launch but becomes unstable, or when the PC is under load.

For a blank or flickering display, check display settings
If the game opens but the screen is blank or flickers, try the display-setting checks in Capcom’s instructions for your storefront. For instability, Capcom also suggests lowering graphics settings. Its guidance includes checking the shader cache and updating DirectX where applicable; follow the storefront-specific directions rather than assuming every check applies to every symptom.

When the game crashes, Capcom says a CrashReport folder is created. In most cases, it contains a ZIP file named with the event’s date and time. Preserve the ZIP nearest to the crash; the report tool may show its location, and Capcom’s instructions give default locations for Steam and Epic installations.
When reporting the issue, include the details Capcom asks for so support can understand and reproduce it:
- CPU and PC model; GPU, VRAM, graphics-driver version, and memory.
- Windows version, security software, display setup, and graphics settings.
- What happened and when, whether restarting changed anything, and clear steps that reproduce the crash.
- The relevant crash-report ZIP, plus screenshots or video if they help show the problem.
Use Capcom’s support FAQ for Epic Games Store and Microsoft Store/Xbox app instructions, or the official Steam troubleshooting thread for Steam. Without diagnostic evidence, do not assume a particular setting or component is the cause.
