If OneDrive shows 0x80004005, the first step is to confirm the code and where it appears. The title 0X080004005 contains an extra zero; Microsoft’s documented OneDrive code is 0x80004005. Microsoft associates this code particularly with attempts to unlock Personal Vault, although account, identity, and sync configuration problems can produce related sign-in failures.
For a Personal Vault unlock failure, install every available Windows update, including feature updates, and run the Windows Update troubleshooter. For a work or school account, verify the signed-in identity, then unlink and re-link OneDrive. If that does not restore synchronization, reset the OneDrive client and reinstall it if necessary. The procedures below keep the manual fixes first and explain what happens to local files and unsynchronized changes at each stage.

Confirm the exact error and its context
Read the message directly from the OneDrive window rather than relying on a search result or a shortened note. Check whether the displayed value is 0x80004005 or a different code. The extra zero in 0X080004005 changes the text, so an exact match matters when choosing a remedy.

If the code appears in a different operation, use the account and client-repair sections below rather than assuming that the Personal Vault procedure applies.
Before changing the OneDrive connection
Unlinking, resetting, and reinstalling are designed to rebuild the local client connection, not erase files stored in OneDrive. They can nevertheless interrupt synchronization temporarily. Make a short inventory before you begin:
- Note the account currently shown in OneDrive, including whether it is personal or connected to an employer or school.
- Check for files with a pending-sync symbol or an error symbol in File Explorer. Do not shut down or restart while a legacy business-library Repair operation is running.
- If a file exists only on the computer and has never reached the cloud, copy it to a separate local folder or external drive before unlinking or repairing.
- Close documents that are open from the OneDrive folder so that applications do not keep unsaved versions locked during the repair.
Microsoft describes unlinking as a temporary disconnection: “No data will be lost by unlinking and re-linking your OneDrive, your local folders are just disconnected from the cloud for a short while.” Changes made while the computer is unlinked can synchronize after the account is linked again. That protection applies to changes that remain available in the local OneDrive folder; a separate backup is still prudent for work that has never synchronized.
Fix Personal Vault error 0x80004005 with Windows updates
When the error appears while you are trying to unlock Personal Vault, start with Windows maintenance rather than reinstalling OneDrive. Microsoft’s documented remedy is to accept all available Windows updates, including feature updates, and run the Windows Update troubleshooter.

1. Install every available Windows update
- Open Settings.
- Open Windows Update. In Windows 10, this is under Update & Security; in Windows 11 it is a top-level Settings page.
- Select Check for updates and allow Windows to download and install everything offered.
- Accept feature updates as well as ordinary quality or security updates. A Personal Vault repair that leaves a feature update pending is incomplete.
- Restart when Windows requests it, then return to Windows Update and check again until no further required update is waiting.
Do not test Personal Vault while an update is still installing or while Windows is waiting for a restart. The OneDrive client and the operating system may be using different components until the update cycle completes.
2. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
- Open Settings and go to the Windows troubleshooting area. On current Windows 11 releases, use System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters; on Windows 10, use Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
- Select Windows Update, then choose Run or the equivalent troubleshooter button.
- Apply any correction it reports and follow its restart instruction.
- After the troubleshooter finishes, open OneDrive and try unlocking Personal Vault again.
If the vault opens, the problem was resolved at the operating-system/update stage. If the same code remains, move to the account and client procedures rather than repeatedly running the troubleshooter.
Check the OneDrive account and identity
Work and school installations can have more than one Microsoft identity available. A client may be signed in with a personal account when the folder belongs to an organization, or it may retain an old organizational identity after a password or tenant change. Microsoft identifies account/configuration and multiple-identity problems as causes of sign-in failures.

Verify the account shown by OneDrive
- Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the Windows notification area. If it is hidden, open the notification-area overflow menu first.
- Open Help & Settings, then Settings, and choose Account.
- Read the displayed email address and organization. Confirm that it is the account that owns the Personal Vault or the business library you are trying to use.
- If the wrong identity is shown, sign out or unlink that account rather than creating another local OneDrive folder beside the existing one.
On macOS, open the OneDrive menu-bar icon and use its settings to inspect the account. The labels differ slightly from Windows, but the objective is the same: establish which identity owns the files before reconnecting the client.

Separate personal and work/school storage
Personal OneDrive and OneDrive for Business can appear together on one computer. Treat them as separate connections. Do not point a work library at a personal account’s folder, and do not select a newly created empty folder when OneDrive is offering the existing synchronized folder. Choosing the wrong identity or folder can make the client appear empty even though the files still exist online.
Unlink and re-link OneDrive
Unlinking rebuilds the association between the local OneDrive folder and the Microsoft account. It does not delete the cloud files. Microsoft says that local folders are disconnected only temporarily and that changes made while unlinked synchronize after re-linking.
Windows procedure
- Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the notification area.
- Open Help & Settings, select Settings, and open the Account tab.
- Choose Unlink this PC, then confirm.
- Wait for the sign-in window. Enter the account that owns the affected Personal Vault, files, or business library.
- When OneDrive asks where to place the folder, choose Use this folder if it identifies the existing local OneDrive directory. Do not create a second folder merely to bypass the prompt.
- Allow the client to compare the local contents with the cloud and finish synchronizing before testing the original operation.
macOS procedure
- Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the menu bar.
- Open OneDrive settings and the Account section.
- Choose Unlink this Mac and confirm.
- Sign in again with the correct account.
- When prompted for the local folder, select the existing OneDrive folder with Use this folder if it is the folder that contains your local files.
- Leave OneDrive running until the sync status settles, then retry the vault, sign-in, or library action.
What to do if local changes are pending
Unlinking pauses the connection; it does not turn unsynchronized local work into cloud copies instantly. Keep the computer online after re-linking and watch the sync status. If a file was created or edited while the client was disconnected, leave it in the linked OneDrive folder so the client can upload it. If you copied files out for safety, compare them with the cloud version after synchronization and merge edits deliberately instead of overwriting one version blindly.
Reset the Windows OneDrive client
Resetting clears the local client state and starts the setup process again. Use it after the correct account has been confirmed and unlinking/re-linking has not repaired the error.

Run the documented reset command
- Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
- Enter
%localappdata%MicrosoftOneDriveonedrive.exe /resetand press Enter. - Wait several minutes. The cloud icon may disappear while the client resets.
- Open the Start menu, search for OneDrive, and start the application again.
- Sign in if requested and allow synchronization to complete before testing Personal Vault or the affected library.
If Windows cannot find that file
Microsoft lists two alternate installation locations. Try each command separately in the Run dialog:
C:Program FilesMicrosoft OneDriveonedrive.exe /resetC:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OneDriveonedrive.exe /reset
After either command, start OneDrive from the Start menu. If none of the paths exists, the installed client may be incomplete or installed in another location; proceed to the reinstall procedure instead of downloading an unverified executable.
Reinstall OneDrive when reset and relinking fail
Reinstalling replaces the local application files. Microsoft’s sign-in troubleshooting states that resetting or uninstalling OneDrive does not cause data loss. The cloud copy remains associated with your account, while the local client must be configured again.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find Microsoft OneDrive, choose its menu, and select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows if the uninstaller requests it.
- Download the current OneDrive application from Microsoft’s official OneDrive download channel and install it.
- Sign in with the account you verified earlier.
- When prompted for a folder, select the existing OneDrive directory with Use this folder when appropriate.
- Wait for the initial synchronization to finish. Do not judge the repair while files are still being indexed or downloaded.
If the installation opens with an empty folder, stop and verify the account and folder choice before moving or deleting anything. An empty view can indicate that the wrong identity was selected, not that cloud files were removed.

Repair a legacy OneDrive for Business library
Some older OneDrive for Business synchronization clients include a Repair command for a library that will not synchronize. This workflow disconnects and reconnects the affected libraries. Files with unsynchronized changes are archived under an OneDrive archives folder so they can be reviewed rather than silently discarded.
- Open the legacy OneDrive for Business client menu and choose its Repair command.
- Confirm the libraries that need to be disconnected and reconnected.
- Let Repair run without restarting the computer or manually closing the client.
- After it finishes, inspect the OneDrive archives folder for files that had unsynchronized changes.
- Compare archived copies with the current library contents and move only the versions you still need into the repaired library.
Do not use this legacy workflow as a substitute for checking the account identity. If the wrong work or school account is connected, Repair can rebuild the wrong connection successfully while leaving the original problem untouched.
Choose the least disruptive remedy
| Situation | Start here | Local-change risk | Expected disruption |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal Vault unlock shows 0x80004005 | Windows Update, including feature updates, then Windows Update troubleshooter | Low; updates do not unlink the folder | May require one or more restarts |
| Wrong personal, work, or school identity | Verify Account settings, then unlink and re-link the correct identity | Existing local files remain; pending changes should be watched until they sync | Temporary disconnect and initial synchronization |
| Persistent sync failure after re-linking | Reset the Windows client | Cloud data remains; local sync pauses while the client restarts | Several minutes, followed by account setup |
| Damaged or missing client installation | Uninstall and reinstall OneDrive | Cloud data remains; local folder must be selected carefully | Application reinstall and a fresh synchronization pass |
| Legacy business library with unsynchronized files | Use Repair and inspect the OneDrive archives folder | Unsynchronized changes are archived for review | Do not restart until Repair completes |
Verify the repair
Use a controlled check instead of immediately opening every file. First confirm that the expected account appears in OneDrive settings. Then check the cloud icon for an active error, create or edit a harmless test file inside the linked folder, and wait for its status to show that synchronization has completed. For Personal Vault, lock it, unlock it again, and verify that the same 0x80004005 message does not return. For a business library, open the affected library and confirm that previously pending files are present or accounted for in the archives folder.
If the error returns only for one account, repeat the identity check before resetting again. If it returns across both personal and work/school accounts on the same installation, a client reset or reinstall is more appropriate than repeatedly changing folders. Keep any archived or separately copied files until you have confirmed that the cloud version is complete.
Common mistakes that prolong the problem
- Searching for the mistyped code: the documented value is 0x80004005, not 0X080004005. Copy the exact on-screen value before selecting a fix.
- Skipping feature updates: for the Personal Vault case, installing only small updates does not follow Microsoft’s stated remedy; accept feature updates too.
- Choosing a new empty folder during re-linking: use the existing OneDrive directory when it is the folder containing your local files.
- Reinstalling before checking the account: a clean client can still fail if it is connected to the wrong personal, work, or school identity.
- Restarting during legacy Repair: the business-library workflow can archive unsynchronized changes, so let it finish before restarting.
- Deleting local files to force a sync: deletion can propagate after the account is reconnected. Preserve copies of unsynchronized work and let OneDrive reconcile normally.
The practical sequence is therefore conditional: update Windows first for a Personal Vault unlock error; verify identity and re-link for sign-in or synchronization failures; reset the client when the connection remains broken; and reinstall only when the reset cannot restore a working installation.
