How to Fix One AirPod Losing Battery Faster Than the Other

A small difference between AirPods’ battery readings does not, by itself, mean one is defective. Uneven use, microphone activity, or an earbud that did not charge fully can all contribute. Check that both AirPods are charging, compare them under similar conditions, and seek diagnosis if the same side repeatedly dies much earlier.

Why one AirPod may drain faster

The two earbuds may have different workloads

Frequent single-ear use means one AirPod may get more listening time. Microphone use during calls or Siri interactions may also create different workloads. These are possibilities to check, not proof of a fault or explanations that apply to every model and user. Apple says battery life varies with settings, environment, usage, and other factors, but does not publish a universal acceptable left-right battery gap: Apple’s AirPods comparison page.

One AirPod may not have charged fully

An earbud that is not seated correctly or is not making a charging connection may start a listening session with less charge than the other. Check each AirPod’s charge status and confirm that it registers as charging in the case, following Apple’s charging guidance.

A repeated imbalance may need diagnosis

If both AirPods start fully charged and the same one repeatedly dies much earlier during comparable use, a battery or other hardware problem is possible. Battery percentages alone cannot identify the cause, and a reset cannot establish whether a battery needs service.

How to check and troubleshoot the difference

  1. Charge both AirPods. Put both earbuds in the case. Apple recommends leaving them there for 30 seconds when troubleshooting an AirPod that is not working: Apple’s troubleshooting steps.
  2. Check each earbud’s charge status. Open the case near an iPhone or iPad and check the displayed charge for each AirPod. You can also check status with a Mac or the case. Place each AirPod in the case and confirm that it shows as charging. Apple explains how to check AirPods charge status.
  3. Reseat an AirPod that does not charge. Remove it and place it back in the case, then check again. If the case itself will not charge, inspect its charging port and check the cable and power connections as described in Apple’s charging guidance. Cleaning may help with a connection issue, but it does not repair a worn battery.
  4. Compare runtime under similar conditions. Start with both AirPods fully charged. Use them together for the same session with the same settings; avoid calls and single-ear use during the comparison. Repeat the check. This is a practical way to isolate differences, not an Apple-certified test or a pass/fail threshold.
  5. Check microphone behavior if the difference tracks calls or Siri. Independent troubleshooting guidance suggests checking whether the microphone is fixed to one side and setting it to Automatic to see whether the imbalance changes: Headphonesty’s troubleshooting guidance. Treat this as a diagnostic experiment, not a guaranteed fix.
  6. Reset if the problem persists, then contact Apple Support. Apple recommends resetting AirPods when troubleshooting does not restore normal function. Follow Apple’s reset and troubleshooting instructions; if the same AirPod still fails or consistently drains much faster, ask Apple Support to diagnose it.

Battery readings differ, but both AirPods charge and the gap is not consistent A difference alone does not establish a defect. Usage and conditions can affect battery life. Compare again after starting with both fully charged and using them similarly.

The gap changes when you avoid single-ear use or calls Different workload may be contributing, though this does not prove the cause. Observe whether the pattern recurs during comparable sessions.

What Apple’s guidance does—and does not—establish

Apple provides steps to check charge status, confirm charging, troubleshoot an AirPod that is not working, and reset AirPods. Its published guidance does not specify a normal left-right percentage gap or give a prevalence statistic for uneven drain. There is therefore no documented percentage difference that can reliably distinguish normal variation from a fault; repeated results under comparable conditions are more useful than one reading.
