OleDbException 0x80004005 is a generic failure signal, not a diagnosis. The reliable fix is to capture the complete provider error, identify the stage that failed, and then correct the matching cause: provider selection, 32-bit/64-bit architecture, authentication, network or TLS, SSIS connection handling, or a driver defect. Installing a newer driver or repeatedly retrying the same connection without identifying that stage often leaves the real problem untouched.
What OleDbException 0x80004005 means
The hexadecimal value is a top-level HRESULT. Microsoft’s OLE DB troubleshooting guidance notes that a value such as DB_E_ERRORSOCCURRED does not identify the underlying cause by itself. An application can report the same 0x80004005 value while loading a provider, opening a connection, authenticating, executing a command, converting data, fetching rows, timing out, or committing a transaction.

That is why the text around the number matters more than the number alone. Messages such as “provider is not registered on the local machine,” “unspecified error,” a login failure, a certificate error, or a communication-link failure point to different repairs. Treat the HRESULT as a signal to collect the complete error records and locate the failing stage.

Capture every provider error record
A native OLE DB consumer should retrieve all available records through IErrorInfo and IErrorRecords. A single displayed exception may be only the last summary. Earlier records can identify the provider, server, login, certificate, network operation, or SQL statement that actually failed.

If you maintain the application, make its error log retain at least these fields:
- Provider name requested by the connection string.
- HRESULT and the complete textual description.
- Every available OLE DB error record, in its original order.
- Timestamp, computer name, application or service name, and process identity.
- The stage: provider loading, connection opening, authentication, command execution, row fetching, timeout, or transaction commit.
Do not replace the original provider message with a custom “database error” string. If the program cannot expose the records, reproduce the failure with the application’s most verbose database logging or ask its maintainer to add that information.
Record the execution context
The same connection string can work interactively and fail under a service, scheduled task, SSIS package, or SQL Agent job because those executions may use a different account, process architecture, environment, or encryption settings. Write down the executable or host that failed, the Windows identity it used, and whether the failure is reproducible outside that host.

| Observed failing stage | First checks | Why this check fits |
|---|---|---|
| Provider loading | Requested provider name; installed provider; process bitness | A missing provider or architecture mismatch prevents the client from loading the driver before it can authenticate. |
| Connection opening | Matching UDL test; server and database; network reachability; encryption settings | A UDL test separates basic connection configuration from application-specific code when every relevant setting matches. |
| Authentication | Execution identity; authentication method; credentials and permissions | An interactive login does not prove that a service or SQL Agent identity can log in. |
| Network or TLS negotiation | Communication-link text; certificate and encryption settings; server availability | Protocol, certificate, and connection-drop failures require different action from a missing provider. |
| Command or data conversion | SQL statement, parameter types, column conversion, and complete records | The provider may load and authenticate correctly while a specific command or returned value fails. |
| Timeout or transaction commit | Operation duration, connection drops, transaction outcome, and retry safety | A retry can duplicate work or replay an operation whose commit status is uncertain. |
Use the table as a triage aid, not as permission to change several unrelated settings at once. Change one plausible cause, reproduce the same operation, and preserve the new error output.
Correct the provider name and installed version
Distinguish MSOLEDBSQL19 from MSOLEDBSQL
MSOLEDBSQL19 and MSOLEDBSQL identify different major provider names. Installing a newer driver does not rewrite an existing application’s connection string. If the string still requests one name while only the other provider is installed, the application can fail before it reaches the server.

- Open the connection configuration used by the failing process, not merely a project template or an unused configuration file.
- Copy the provider name exactly, including its spelling and version suffix.
- Check the provider names installed on the same computer where the process runs.
- Either install the requested provider in the required architecture or deliberately change the connection configuration to a provider that is installed and supported by that application.
- Restart the service, job host, or application after changing the driver or its configuration, then test again and capture the complete result.
Do not assume that “latest installed” means “the provider the program will use.” Provider selection is controlled by the application’s connection string and deployment configuration.
Fix 32-bit and 64-bit mismatches
Microsoft’s guidance is explicit: “A 32-bit application needs the 32-bit provider, even on 64-bit Windows.” A 64-bit operating system can therefore show a provider as installed while a 32-bit process reports that it is not registered.
Identify the bitness that actually runs
- Check the executable or runtime that opens the connection, rather than the operating system alone.
- For a Windows service, inspect the service’s executable and hosting configuration.
- For a scheduled task, identify the program launched by the task action and the runtime it starts.
- For SSIS, check whether the package is executed by a 32-bit or 64-bit runtime in the environment that fails.
- For SQL Agent, inspect the subsystem or proxy context that launches the package or command.
Install or repair the matching architecture
Once the process bitness is known, install or repair the corresponding provider on that computer. If both 32-bit and 64-bit processes must connect, both architectures may be needed. Re-test from the same host and under the same execution path; a successful test from a different architecture does not validate the failing process.
Run a matching Universal Data Link test
A UDL file is useful for a connection-opening failure, but only when it reproduces the application’s conditions. A test that uses a different provider, account, server, database, or encryption setting proves very little.
- On the computer where the failure occurs, create a text file and change its extension to
.udl. - Open the file to display Data Link Properties.
- On the provider page, select the same provider name requested by the application.
- On the connection page, enter the same server, database, authentication method, and identity used by the failing process. For a service or scheduled task, test with that account or an equivalent controlled identity rather than your interactive desktop account.
- Use the same encryption and certificate-validation settings as the application. A UDL test that silently uses different defaults is not equivalent.
- Run the provider’s test connection and record the complete message, including any certificate, login, or communication detail.
- Delete the temporary file if it contains credentials or other sensitive settings.
If the matching UDL test fails, focus on provider installation, architecture, identity, server access, or encryption before investigating SQL statements. If it succeeds while the application fails, compare the application’s actual connection string, process identity, runtime bitness, and connection-pool or transaction behavior line by line.

Separate transient connectivity from configuration errors
When a retry may be reasonable
A brief network interruption can produce a communication-link failure or a forcibly closed connection. First establish that the provider loaded and that authentication and encryption had previously succeeded. Then determine whether the application’s operation is safe to repeat and whether the server is available again.
When not to retry blindly
Microsoft warns that idle connection resiliency does not provide initial-connection retries or automatic replay of arbitrary commands and transactions. Do not use a retry loop to hide a missing provider, a rejected credential, a certificate-validation failure, or a wrong connection string. Those are configuration or policy problems.
After a connection drops during a transaction, the client may not know whether the server committed the work. Microsoft’s guidance is: “Don’t blindly replay the operation.” Check the transaction outcome using an application-specific, idempotent recovery method before issuing the command again. If the operation cannot safely be verified, escalate with the transaction details rather than risking duplicate changes.
Resolve authentication and execution-identity failures
First classify the message as authentication rather than provider loading. A provider that is not registered cannot authenticate, while a valid provider can still reject the account or authentication method.
- Identify the Windows or database identity shown in the failure context.
- Confirm that the same identity is being used in the UDL test and in the application.
- Verify that the connection string’s authentication mode matches the identity and server configuration.
- Check that the account has access to the target database and any objects used by the command.
- Re-run the smallest connection-only test before testing the full package or application operation.
A desktop test performed with an administrator account does not validate a SQL Agent job, Windows service, or SSIS execution that runs under another account. Preserve the exact identity and authentication details in the escalation record without exposing passwords.

Investigate network, protocol, and TLS failures
If the provider loads and the UDL test reaches the server but reports a protocol error, communication-link failure, certificate problem, or forcibly closed TCP connection, keep the investigation at the network and encryption layer. Verify that the server name, port path, encryption requirement, and certificate-validation behavior are identical between the application and the test.
Do not “fix” a certificate-validation failure by turning off validation as a blind workaround. The error records should establish whether the certificate name, trust chain, encryption policy, or server endpoint is responsible. Likewise, a connection that fails only after being idle should not be treated as proof that the initial provider or credential configuration is wrong.
Repair the documented SSIS and SQL Agent case
Microsoft documents an SSIS scenario in which a package works in one context but fails when SQL Agent runs it, with protocol errors, communication-link failures, or forcibly closed TCP connections. In that specific case, edit the affected SSIS connection manager and change RetainSameConnection from False to True.
- Open the SSIS package in the package design environment.
- Select the connection manager used by the failing data flow or task.
- Open its Properties window.
- Set
RetainSameConnectiontoTrue. - Deploy the updated package to the same environment that SQL Agent executes.
- Run the job again and compare the complete error records with the earlier run.
This is a scenario-specific remedy, not a universal setting for every 0x80004005 error. If the package instead fails while loading a provider, authenticating, or converting data, return to the corresponding stage in the diagnostic table.

- Record the exact installed driver version and the provider name requested by the application.
- Review the known-issues list for that version and the release notes for later versions.
- Check the release’s installation requirements, including the process architecture you need.
- Install the latest driver release that contains the relevant fix, using the architecture required by the failing process.
- Retest the original workload and keep the prior error records for comparison.
Do not revert automatically to an older release merely because it was familiar. Microsoft’s guidance is to identify whether the installed version is affected and obtain a later driver containing the fix when one is available.
When a command or returned data causes the exception
If provider loading, connection opening, authentication, and encryption all succeed, the failure may occur during command execution or row retrieval. Preserve the SQL command, parameter definitions, result-column metadata, and the exact row or conversion operation that failed.
- Run the smallest statement that reproduces the error.
- Check parameter types and sizes against the database types.
- Compare the failing column or expression with values that require conversion.
- Determine whether the exception occurs while sending the command or while fetching a particular result row.
- Test the same operation with the application’s actual provider and identity, not a different database tool.
Do not classify a data-conversion failure as a missing-provider problem merely because both ultimately display 0x80004005. The failure stage determines which team should investigate: deployment, security, networking, SSIS configuration, or application data handling.

Build a useful escalation package
If the manual checks do not isolate the cause, provide a minimal reproduction rather than only the hexadecimal value. Include:
- Complete error text and every available provider error record.
- Driver version and the exact requested provider name.
- Application, runtime, service, SSIS, or SQL Agent host and its 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- Database server version and target database.
- Authentication method and execution identity, excluding secrets.
- Effective connection settings, including encryption and certificate behavior.
- The failure stage and whether it is consistent, intermittent, idle-time related, or limited to SQL Agent.
- A minimal command, package, or program that reproduces the problem.
- What changed immediately before the first failure, such as a driver, server, certificate, package, or account change.
These details let support reproduce the same provider, architecture, identity, and workload. Without them, “unspecified error” is usually too broad to separate a deployment issue from a server or application defect.
Quick Recap
A compact decision path
- Capture all records. Preserve the provider name, HRESULT, description, timestamp, and stage.
- Fails before connection? Verify the requested provider and match the process architecture.
- Fails opening the connection? Run a UDL test with the same host, identity, provider, server, database, and encryption settings.
- Fails at login or TLS? Correct the identity, authentication, certificate, or encryption configuration; do not hide it with retries.
- Fails only under SQL Agent in the documented SSIS scenario? Set
RetainSameConnectiontoTrueon the affected connection manager. - Started after an upgrade? Check known issues and move to the latest driver containing the relevant fix.
- Fails during a command, fetch, timeout, or commit? Preserve SQL, parameters, transaction state, and data-conversion details before changing the provider.
After these manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair is an optional shortcut for Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7 that can address some common broken system elements, invalid redirects, shared DLL issues, settings load, temporary and cache files, and app-crash logging.
