If Office shows 0x80070057 while starting, installing, updating, activating, repairing, or sharing a document, the correct fix depends on that operation. The title code 0X080070057 contains an extra zero and is not the format used in Microsoft’s Office and Windows documentation. Before changing anything, copy the complete message and confirm the code, Office edition and build, Windows version, and action that triggered it.
For an app that will not open, update Office, test Safe Mode, disable the conflicting add-in, then run Quick Repair followed by Online Repair. Activation failures require account, subscription, time, network, and duplicate-installation checks. Installation, Windows Update, Configuration Manager, Word-sharing, and Outlook occurrences follow different branches described below.

What 0x80070057 means
Hexadecimal error 0x80070057 is a general parameter or configuration failure code. It does not identify one broken Office file or one universal repair. The same code can be emitted by Office activation, Click-to-Run installation or repair, Windows Update, an enterprise deployment, a Word sharing action, or an Outlook synchronization operation. Microsoft’s remedy changes with the workflow, so applying an activation fix to a launch failure—or an enterprise build fix to a home installation—can waste time or create a new problem.

Windows may display the code as 80070057 without the 0x prefix. Treat 0X080070057 as a transcription error until the original dialog, event entry, or log confirms otherwise. Do not edit the registry merely because the digits look similar to another Office code.

Record evidence and prepare safely
Write down the entire dialog, not only the last eight characters. Include whether the code appeared during installation, an update, activation, app launch, repair, document sharing, or Outlook synchronization. Also record:
- Office product name (for example, a Microsoft 365 subscription or a perpetual Office edition), 32-bit or 64-bit architecture, and the installed build.
- Windows edition and version, whether the computer is managed by an organization, and whether Configuration Manager controls Office updates.
- The Microsoft account or work account currently signed in, and whether another Office copy is installed.
- What changed immediately before the failure: a Windows or Office update, add-in installation, driver change, password change, network change, or migration from another Office edition.
- The time of the failure and whether every Office app is affected or only one.
Save open documents, close all Office applications, and make sure you can sign in to Windows with an administrator account before repairing. Quick Repair can replace local components, while Online Repair can download them again; neither should be started with unsaved work open. If the computer belongs to an employer or school, check its change-control policy before removing an installation or resetting update components.
Fix an Office app that will not start
1. Update Office first
- Open the affected Office application if it opens far enough to show the Backstage view.
- Select File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
- Let the update complete, restart Windows, and test the application again.
If Update Options is missing, updates may be disabled by policy or by the installation type. Enable updates through the available Account controls, or ask the organization that manages the device. Updating is the least-invasive first step in Microsoft’s startup troubleshooting sequence.

Safe Mode starts an Office application without its usual add-ins and some customizations. Press Windows key + R, enter the command for the affected program, and press Enter:
winword /safefor Wordexcel /safefor Excelpowerpnt /safefor PowerPoint
If the application opens in Safe Mode, an add-in or customization is a leading suspect. In the application, select File > Options > Add-Ins. At the bottom, set Manage to COM Add-ins, choose Go, clear one add-in, and restart normally. Repeat one at a time so you know which component caused the conflict. Test both application and document behavior after each change. If Safe Mode also fails, move to repair rather than repeatedly removing add-ins.

3. Run Quick Repair
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps. On older Windows versions, open Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Find Microsoft 365 or your Office edition, select its menu, and choose Modify (the wording in Control Panel may be Change).
- Choose Quick Repair, confirm, and allow the process to finish.
- Restart Windows and test the previously failing application.
Quick Repair uses the local installation and normally finishes without downloading the full suite. Close every Office process before starting it. If the dialog still reports 0x80070057 or the app remains unable to start, do not run the same repair repeatedly; continue to Online Repair.
4. Run Online Repair
- Return to the same Modify or Change screen.
- Select Online Repair and confirm the warning.
- Keep the computer connected to the internet and avoid launching Office until the repair completes.
- Restart Windows, open an Office app, and sign in if prompted.
Online Repair is the fuller repair option. It can replace or redownload Office components and may reset parts of the installation, so note any custom settings or add-ins you need to restore. If Online Repair cannot complete, treat the installation as damaged and use the uninstall-and-reinstall path below.
5. Update Windows and device drivers
Startup failures can continue when Windows components or manufacturer drivers are outdated. Install pending Windows updates, then obtain current drivers from the computer or component manufacturer. Prioritize graphics, display, printer, storage, and networking drivers when the failure is tied to rendering, printing, file access, or connectivity. Restart after driver installation and test Office before making another repair change.
6. Uninstall and reinstall only when repair fails
- Use Microsoft’s official Microsoft 365/Office uninstall troubleshooter rather than deleting Office folders manually.
- Restart Windows when the removal process requests it.
- Sign in with the account that owns the subscription, or use the correct product key and installation media for a perpetual edition.
- Install the same edition and architecture unless you have a documented reason to change them.
- Open an Office application, activate it, apply updates, and test the original workflow.
Manual deletion of program folders or registry keys can leave licensing and Click-to-Run components behind. The official removal path is safer and gives support personnel a clearer state if the reinstall also fails.
Fix activation or “Unlicensed Product” errors
Sign in with the purchasing account
Open an Office application and sign in with the Microsoft account used to buy the subscription or redeem the license. A work or school account may require the organization’s assigned license instead. If the account has changed, signing in with a different address can make a valid installation appear unlicensed.

Remove duplicate Office installations
Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and look for more than one Microsoft 365 or Office entry, including an older perpetual edition. Multiple copies can compete for activation. Confirm which edition you need, remove the unused copy through its normal uninstall command, restart Windows, and test activation again. Do not remove an employer-managed installation without approval.

Check the account’s subscription status in the Microsoft account or organization portal. An expired, canceled, or incorrectly assigned subscription cannot be repaired by reinstalling files. If the subscription is active but the desktop app still reports “Unlicensed Product,” run Microsoft’s Microsoft 365 activation troubleshooter on Windows 10 or later and follow its diagnostics.
Check the conditions activation depends on
- Open Windows date and time settings and enable the correct time, date, time zone, and automatic synchronization.
- Confirm that the computer can reach the internet through the expected network.
- Temporarily test whether a firewall, security product, or proxy is blocking Office sign-in or licensing traffic; restore protection immediately after testing and use an approved exception instead of leaving it disabled.
- On a managed network, ask the administrator whether proxy authentication or inspection is required.
Microsoft Support notes: “Running Office as administrator helps fix permission issues that might cause Office activation to fail.” If you test this, close Office, right-click the application shortcut, select Run as administrator, and try activation once. Elevation is a diagnostic step, not a permanent substitute for correcting the account, license, or network condition.
Do not copy a registry-permission procedure written for Office error 0x80070005 into a 0x80070057 case. Microsoft documents that registry procedure for a specific 0x80070005-after-Windows-update scenario; it is not evidence that the same edit repairs 0x80070057.
Fix an installation or repair operation that fails
Use the supported setup path
If the code appears while Office is being installed, first restart Windows and run Microsoft’s setup troubleshooter. Confirm that the installer matches the product you own and that an older Office edition is not still installed. A work or school deployment may require its administrator’s installation package rather than the consumer installer.

For an existing installation, use Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft 365 or Office > Modify, then run Quick Repair followed by Online Repair. If both fail, run the official uninstall troubleshooter, restart, and reinstall the correct edition. Keep the installer, account details, and exact error text available if support is needed.
Check architecture and deployment conflicts
Mixing 32-bit and 64-bit Office components, or leaving an older MSI-based edition beside a Click-to-Run edition, can prevent setup from completing. Record the architecture shown in the Office Account page and remove conflicting editions through their normal uninstall paths. Enterprise computers may receive Office from a deployment service; do not replace that package with a consumer installer without the administrator’s approval.
Configuration Manager and Office 365 version-1910 updates
Microsoft has a narrowly scoped article for Office 365 version-1910 updates delivered through Configuration Manager. It identifies affected 32-bit and 64-bit builds, states that the affected updates were removed from the catalog, and points to build 12130.20410 or later, or Microsoft’s fix tool, for affected devices.
Use that guidance only when all three conditions match: Configuration Manager is delivering the Office update, the deployment is the version-1910 scenario, and the installed build appears on Microsoft’s affected list. Compare the installed build in File > Account with the list before changing deployment packages. This is not a general desktop repair for every occurrence of 0x80070057.
When Windows Update reports 0x80070057
If the code is shown by Windows Update while Office is installing or updating, begin outside Office:

- Restart Windows and retry the update once.
- Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters (the exact path varies by Windows release) and run the Windows Update troubleshooter.
- Install any pending servicing or cumulative updates, restart, and retry the Office operation.
- If the troubleshooter cannot repair the update store, follow Microsoft’s documented Windows Update component-reset procedure for your Windows version. Stop the required services, rename the specified cache folders as instructed, restart the services, and retry.
Do not reset update components while another administrator or management system is installing software. On an organization-managed computer, let the administrator perform the reset so deployment reporting is not corrupted.
Word sharing and synchronization cases
A Word sharing occurrence is different from a local launch failure. Microsoft’s scenario-specific guidance recommends signing out of Office and signing back in, installing current Windows updates, resetting OneDrive, running Office Online Repair, and reinstalling Office if those steps do not help. Apply the OneDrive reset only when the error occurred during a sharing or synchronization action; it is not a general treatment for every 0x80070057 message.
Before resetting, check whether the document is stored locally, on a synchronized folder, or in an organization’s cloud location. Save a local copy if possible and make sure collaborators’ changes have synchronized. If only one document fails, test a new document and a different account or location to distinguish a file or permission issue from an Office installation problem.
Outlook send/receive and Offline Address Book cases
Outlook can display 0x80070057 during send/receive or Offline Address Book operations for reasons unrelated to Word or Excel. Capture the exact action, account type, server, and whether webmail works. A profile, data-file, cached-mode, address-book, or server-configuration investigation may be required.
Do not delete an Outlook profile or data file before confirming that server mail is available and that you have backups of any local-only data. If the same account works in webmail but not Outlook, recreate or repair the desktop profile only after documenting its settings. If webmail also fails, involve the mail administrator rather than repeatedly repairing Office.
Common mistakes that make this error harder to fix
- Using the extra-zero code as if it were official: verify the original message and use 0x80070057 only when the source confirms it.
- Applying a fix for 0x80070005: similar digits do not mean the same cause; never import registry permissions from an unrelated article.
- Reinstalling before testing Safe Mode: an add-in conflict can survive or return after reinstalling.
- Running several repairs simultaneously: finish one operation, restart if requested, and test before changing another variable.
- Ignoring edition and architecture: reinstalling the wrong product or mixing 32-bit and 64-bit components can create a second failure.
- Resetting Windows Update or removing a managed deployment without approval: enterprise policy may restore the failing package or lose diagnostic information.
- Disabling security software indefinitely: use a brief controlled test and restore protection immediately.
When to contact Microsoft support
Escalate after the branch-specific steps fail, or immediately if the computer is managed and you lack permission to change Office. Provide the exact hexadecimal code, complete message, Office edition and build, Windows version, 32-bit or 64-bit architecture, trigger, account type, recent changes, and every repair step already attempted. Screenshots should include the full dialog but should not expose passwords, license keys, or personal document contents.
For an enterprise case, include the Configuration Manager deployment identifier and the build comparison if version-1910 is involved. For Outlook, include the operation and whether webmail succeeds. For activation, include subscription status and the result of the activation troubleshooter. This evidence lets support choose between licensing, installation, profile, update, and server investigation instead of repeating unrelated repairs.
