First identify which headset you have: the original Oculus Rift (CV1) uses external sensors, while Rift S tracks with cameras built into the headset. If you have a CV1, most tracking interruptions are consistent with a sensor losing sight of the headset or Touch controllers—not necessarily a failed sensor. Rift S owners should not reposition or buy external CV1 sensors.
Identify your Rift model before troubleshooting
The original Rift, commonly called CV1, uses outside-in tracking with external Constellation sensors. Rift S uses inside-out tracking through cameras on the headset and does not require external sensors. Meta lists a minimum of two USB 3.0 ports for the original Rift, with additional tracking sensors allowed on USB 2; Rift S uses one USB 3.0 connector. Meta’s Rift device specifications distinguish the two systems.
| Headset | Tracking system | Connection information |
|---|---|---|
| Original Rift (CV1) | External Constellation sensors; outside-in 6DoF | At least two USB 3.0 ports; additional sensors may use USB 2, per Meta’s specifications |
| Rift S | Headset cameras; inside-out 6DoF | One USB 3.0 connector; no external sensors |
Check the headset and its connections rather than relying on the word “Rift” alone: CV1 uses HDMI and external sensors; Rift S uses DisplayPort and USB 3.0. The troubleshooting steps below for sensor visibility apply to CV1 only.
Why CV1 tracking drops out
Constellation tracks infrared LEDs on the headset and controllers. The system estimates a controller’s pose from the LEDs it can see and combines those observations with inertial data. When a sensor cannot see enough of the tracked hardware, positional tracking can be interrupted. Meta’s explanation of Constellation-tracked controllers describes this tracking approach.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Meta identifies several conditions that can interrupt position tracking: leaving some or all of a sensor’s viewing area (its frustum), turning into an orientation the hardware cannot track well, being partly or fully occluded, or moving faster than expected. Its sensor documentation says tracking normally resumes quickly when the interruption conditions are no longer present. Meta’s sensor documentation describes these conditions.
Fix CV1 sensor tracking step by step
- Restore a clear view. Check that each external sensor can see the headset and Touch controllers. Move obstructions—such as your hands, hair, or furniture—out of the sensors’ lines of sight. A controller disappearing when your body or another object blocks it is consistent with occlusion.
- Move back into the tracked area. If tracking fails near the edge of your play space, return to where the sensors can observe the headset and controllers. Also test a different orientation: facing directly away from the sensors can be difficult for the system to track.
- Check controller coverage as you play. Notice whether a controller drops out only when it is behind your body, held close to another obstruction, or moved to a part of the room sensors cannot see. Change the obstruction or position and see whether tracking returns. That recovery points to a visibility or coverage interruption; by itself, it does not prove a sensor is defective.
- Check the sensor setup against the USB baseline. For CV1, compare your connected equipment and available PC ports with Meta’s minimum of two USB 3.0 ports. Meta permits additional tracking sensors on USB 2. These specifications are setup requirements, not evidence that a particular adapter or port arrangement will cure a tracking problem.
- Run the official setup flow. Use Meta’s Rift setup guide to reach Oculus Rift Setup. Meta’s guide says setup can install current firmware and drivers. It does not document a specific current consumer repair sequence for every sensor-tracking failure.
When additional sensors may help
Meta identifies at least two external Constellation sensors as the baseline for Rift and Rift Touch installations. It says additional sensors can improve tracking accuracy and help with occlusion issues. An extra sensor may therefore be worth considering when the existing arrangement cannot see parts of your play area or controllers are often blocked, but it is not a universal fix.

Meta does not establish one ideal sensor count or guarantee a particular tracking-volume improvement for every room. Consider whether an additional sensor would provide a useful view of the area where tracking is lost, and account for its connection to the PC. Do not treat buying another sensor as a substitute for checking existing visibility and connections.
When to suspect a failed sensor or consider replacement
Consider replacement only after checking that the headset is CV1, the sensor has a clear view, the tracking interruption is not explained by coverage or occlusion, and the official setup flow has been followed. A replacement external sensor is relevant only to original Rift CV1 when a sensor is missing or there is evidence of hardware failure. Current stock and retail compatibility are not established by Meta’s cited specifications, so confirm the model and compatibility with the seller before purchasing.

If you have Rift S
Rift S does not use external Constellation sensors. Do not apply CV1 sensor-placement advice or buy an external CV1 sensor to address Rift S tracking. Its tracking is based on headset cameras, so the CV1-specific sensor visibility, sensor-count, and USB-port guidance above does not describe its setup.
