The quickest safe way to repair an Obsidian vault is to measure startup, test the vault in Restricted Mode, and then isolate extensions by controlled batches. This keeps plugins installed while showing whether a community plugin, vault loading, workspace restoration, or editor compatibility is responsible.
Because vault size, device, Obsidian release, workspace, and symptom vary, there is no universal “slow plugin” list. Treat the repair as a sequence of reversible experiments. Keep the same vault, note, workspace, and reproduction steps during comparisons so each result answers a specific question.

Start with a measurement, not a guess
Before disabling anything, capture a baseline. Open Settings → General → Advanced and select the timer icon beside Notify if startup takes longer than expected. Obsidian opens its Startup time window, where you can copy a report for comparison and troubleshooting. The report separates total startup into app initialization, vault loading, workspace restoration, and core-plugin time. Save this first report before changing settings or extensions.
Record the Obsidian version, device context, vault, and whether you measured a cold launch, a restart, or reopening an existing workspace. Those conditions can produce different observations, so use the same condition after each change. If the problem is intermittent, capture more than one baseline and note when the symptom occurred rather than selecting only the fastest result.

The total elapsed time is a symptom, not a diagnosis. A long launch can be dominated by vault loading or workspace restoration even when community plugins are not the cause. Conversely, a plugin-related problem can present as a broken workflow rather than an obviously slow launch. Compare the component timings after each controlled change instead of treating one number as proof.
Keep the copied report in your change log. A later report with a lower total is useful only when you can also say what changed and whether the original symptom disappeared. A changed component alongside a changed symptom is stronger evidence than a small fluctuation in total seconds.
Use Restricted Mode as the first isolation test
Open Settings → Community plugins, turn on Restricted mode, restart Obsidian, and reproduce the problem using the same steps. Restricted Mode ignores installed community plugins while leaving their files in the vault, so this test is reversible and does not require uninstalling your setup. Obsidian documents this behavior in its plugin-security guidance.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Restricted Mode is deliberately more useful as a comparison than as a permanent configuration. It tells you what happens when community extensions are not active; it does not identify a specific extension, prove that the vault is healthy, or rule out every other cause. Keep the same workspace and editor mode during the test, and write down any partial change instead of recording only “fixed” or “not fixed.”
Interpret the result narrowly:
- The symptom disappears: a community plugin, or an interaction among community plugins, is now the leading hypothesis. Turn Restricted Mode off only when you are ready to perform a controlled toggle test.
- The symptom remains: community plugins are less likely to be responsible. This does not identify the cause by itself; use the startup components and the type of failure to investigate vault loading, workspace restoration, initialization, or editor compatibility.
- The symptom changes: record exactly what changed. A partial improvement can indicate more than one issue, so do not assume the first extension you disable is the only cause.
If startup improves but an editing command still fails, treat those as potentially separate problems. If startup is unchanged but the workflow is repaired, the plugin may have affected editing without accounting for launch time. These distinctions prevent you from repeatedly changing launch settings when the failure is mode-specific.
Restricted Mode is an isolation experiment, not a permanent repair. Keep the result and the reproduction steps with your startup report so you can explain what was tested.
Find the conflicting plugin without deleting your setup
If Restricted Mode clears the issue, disable extensions in batches. In Settings → Community plugins, turn off plugins rather than uninstalling them. After each batch, restart if the failure occurs during launch, then repeat the same workflow that exposed the problem.

- Turn Restricted Mode off and disable roughly half of the enabled community plugins. Keep a written list of the batch.
- Restart and reproduce the original symptom. Use the same vault, workspace, note, and editor mode so the comparison is meaningful.
- If the problem is gone, the responsible item is in the disabled half. Re-enable a portion of that half and test again. If the problem returns, the responsible item is in the portion you re-enabled.
- Continue splitting the suspect group until one plugin, or a small interaction between plugins, remains.
- Re-enable unrelated plugins in small groups to verify that the failure does not depend on a second extension. Stop when you have a repeatable minimal failing set.
This bisection approach reduces the number of restarts compared with toggling every plugin one at a time. The Obsidian Community Directory’s Divide and Conquer plugin provides bulk enable and disable commands for plugins and CSS snippets if you need to manage large sets. Use it only as an aid to the same reversible process; it does not identify a culprit automatically.
For a launch failure, restart after every meaningful batch because a plugin may initialize only during startup. For an editor-only failure, you can often repeat the same note and command after each toggle without changing the workspace. Do not mix a plugin toggle, editor-mode change, workspace change, and Obsidian upgrade in one test; if the result changes, you will not know which variable mattered.
For the final suspect, record the plugin name and version, your Obsidian version, the vault and operating-system context, the exact symptom, and the smallest set of enabled extensions that reproduces it. Those details make a later support report actionable and let you restore the working configuration.
Read the Startup time report correctly
Obsidian’s developer documentation explains that plugins are loaded before you can interact with the app. That makes plugin load time relevant, but the startup report still has to be read by component rather than by total duration. Use the report to decide which branch to test next:
Recommended Free Tools
| Dominant component | What it tells you | Next diagnostic move |
|---|---|---|
| Initialization | Time is being spent before the vault and workspace stages complete. | Compare a normal launch with Restricted Mode and note whether the initialization figure changes. |
| Vault loading | Opening the vault is the larger measured stage. | Do not label a community plugin the cause solely from the overall launch time; test whether the same vault behaves differently in Restricted Mode. |
| Workspace restoration | Restoring the prior layout and open views is the larger stage. | Reproduce with the same workspace and compare reports after controlled plugin changes. |
| Core plugins | Obsidian’s built-in plugin stage accounts for a substantial share of the measured time. | Broaden the investigation beyond community extensions and include this report in a support request. |
The window can be copied, so preserve the original report and a report after each meaningful change. A lower total with the same dominant component may not represent a plugin fix; a changed component alongside a changed symptom is stronger evidence. Obsidian’s Help and support page describes the startup report and other diagnostic information.
Do not compare a normal launch in one vault with Restricted Mode in another and draw a plugin conclusion. Vault loading and workspace restoration belong to the measured result too. If the same component dominates in both modes, community plugins have not been shown to explain that portion of the delay.
Separate startup problems from broken editing workflows
Some failures appear only after launch: formatting stops working, a command produces the wrong result, or a note renders differently. Compare the same note in Source mode and Live Preview before changing several plugins at once. If one mode works and the other does not, the failure is more likely tied to editor compatibility or an extension that hooks into that editor path than to startup duration.

Obsidian’s Live Preview update guidance notes that some plugins and themes may not fully support the newer editor and describes enabling the Legacy editor as a compatibility workaround. That guidance is older, so verify the setting name and location in the release installed on your device and check its release notes before relying on the exact navigation.
- Reproduce the editing failure in Live Preview and write down the note, command, and expected result.
- Switch to Source mode and perform the identical action.
- Repeat the comparison with community plugins disabled through Restricted Mode.
- If the failure is limited to one mode and disappears without community plugins, use the batch method to isolate the extension that interacts with that mode.
- If it persists in both modes and in Restricted Mode, retain the mode comparison for escalation rather than repeatedly reinstalling plugins.
A theme can also be part of an editor-specific interaction, so include the active theme and CSS-snippet state in your notes when visual rendering is the symptom. If you test snippets, treat them like plugins: change them in controlled groups and record which group was active. Do not call a plugin “incompatible” solely because a workflow feels slower. Confirm the mode-specific reproduction and the result of the reversible toggle test.
When Restricted Mode does not fix the problem
A failure that survives Restricted Mode points away from community plugins, so change the question from “which plugin is bad?” to “which startup or editor stage changes when the failure occurs?” Compare the startup report’s initialization, vault-loading, workspace-restoration, and core-plugin timings, then repeat the workflow with a consistent workspace.
Use these observations to choose a branch:
| Observation | Most useful interpretation | Evidence to collect |
|---|---|---|
| Launch is slow in both normal and Restricted Mode | The slowdown is not demonstrated to depend on community plugins. | Both startup reports, including the dominant component. |
| Launch improves in Restricted Mode but a workflow still fails | There may be separate startup and editing issues. | The two reports plus the exact editor-mode reproduction. |
| Launch is normal but editing fails only in Live Preview or Source mode | Editor compatibility or an editor-specific extension path is more relevant than startup time. | Mode-by-mode results with plugins enabled and disabled. |
| The same failure appears after a clean restart and in Restricted Mode | Community plugins are not established as the cause. | Debug information and a minimal, repeatable sequence. |
This is a diagnostic inference from what Restricted Mode disables and what the startup report measures. It is not proof that a particular vault stage is defective. Avoid deleting application data or rebuilding a vault while the evidence is still ambiguous; first preserve the reports and reproduction steps.
If the problem is limited to one vault, compare that fact with a second vault only as an additional observation, not as a replacement for controlled testing. Record whether the same editor action, workspace pattern, or startup behavior occurs elsewhere. A difference between vaults can help support staff focus on vault or workspace loading, while an identical failure across vaults keeps the investigation broader.
Capture a useful report for support
When you can reproduce the issue, open the command palette and run Show debug info, then copy the result. Combine it with the copied Startup time report and a short procedure that another person can follow. Obsidian lists these details as part of its troubleshooting resources at Help and support.
A high-quality report contains:
- Your Obsidian version and the device context.
- The vault in which the issue occurs and whether it occurs in another vault, if you have tested one.
- The exact action sequence, including the note type, command, and editor mode.
- Whether Restricted Mode was enabled and how the symptom changed.
- The enabled plugin list, with the suspected plugin’s version if isolation identified one.
- The baseline and post-change startup reports, not just the total launch time.
- Any difference between a cold launch, a restart, and reopening the same workspace.
Describe the smallest configuration that still fails. “Obsidian is slow” is difficult to act on; “workspace restoration dominates the report, and the same command fails in Live Preview but works in Source mode with Restricted Mode enabled” gives support a testable lead.

Include the exact date of each test only if it helps correlate the Obsidian release or a configuration change, and preserve copied reports rather than transcribing only selected figures. If a batch test implicates an interaction, list both plugins and the smallest combination that reproduces it. That is more useful than reporting the first extension you happened to disable.

Community plugins are third-party code. Obsidian warns that they can access files, connect to the internet, or install programs, so consider the trustworthiness of any extension and the sensitivity of the vault before installing a tool to diagnose another extension. The warning is documented in the plugin security documentation.

You do not need a troubleshooting plugin to perform the core isolation test: Restricted Mode, ordinary enable/disable toggles, startup reports, and debug information are sufficient. If you use a bulk-toggle utility, install it only long enough to perform the reversible batch work, note what it changed, and remove or disable it afterward if it is no longer needed.
Never grant a diagnostic extension more trust than the extension it is helping you investigate. Read its description, consider whether the vault contains sensitive files, and keep the test limited to the commands you need. The Divide and Conquer utility is useful for bulk enable/disable operations, but it remains community code and does not replace your own verification.
Keep the vault recoverable while you test
Use a change log for each test: date, Obsidian version, startup-report components, enabled batch, editor mode, and result. Change one variable at a time when the symptom is subtle; use halves or similarly sized batches when the symptom is obvious and launch-based. Re-enable known-good groups only after the suspect set is understood, and leave the smallest failing configuration documented rather than repeatedly guessing.
Keep disabled plugins installed until the investigation is complete. Uninstalling early removes a useful comparison point and can make it harder to restore the previous setup. When you finish, preserve both the working configuration and the minimal failing configuration in your notes, including which plugins or snippets were re-enabled.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will Restricted Mode delete or uninstall my community plugins?
No. Restricted Mode ignores installed community plugins while leaving them in the vault. Turn it off to restore normal plugin loading, then use enable and disable toggles for isolation.
Does a long Startup time prove that a plugin is slow?
No. The Startup time window separates initialization, vault loading, workspace restoration, and core-plugin time. Compare those components and test the same launch in Restricted Mode before attributing the delay to a community plugin.
Should I disable plugins one at a time?
Not necessarily. Disabling roughly half of the enabled plugins, reproducing the symptom, and repeatedly splitting the suspect batch usually requires fewer restarts. Re-enable unrelated groups afterward to check for interactions.
What if the problem remains in Restricted Mode?
Community plugins are less likely to be responsible. Compare startup components, check whether the failure is limited to Live Preview or Source mode, and collect Startup time and Show debug info reports for escalation.
How can I test an editing-only failure?
Reproduce the same note and command in Live Preview and Source mode, then repeat both tests with community plugins disabled through Restricted Mode. A mode-specific failure points toward editor compatibility or an extension path tied to that mode.
Is a troubleshooting community plugin required?
No. Restricted Mode, ordinary plugin toggles, the Startup time window, and the command palette’s Show debug info provide the core diagnostic evidence. If you install a bulk-toggle utility, remember that it is third-party code.
What information should I send to a plugin maintainer?
Send the plugin and Obsidian versions, device and vault context, exact reproduction steps, editor mode, enabled-plugin set, the smallest failing combination, and copied Startup time and debug reports when relevant.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe Bottom Line
Measure first, compare normal startup with Restricted Mode, and isolate suspected extensions by reversible batches. Read startup components separately from total time, test Live Preview against Source mode for editing failures, and preserve copied reports and exact reproduction steps. This method identifies evidence-supported causes without deleting your vault setup or assuming that every slowdown is a plugin conflict.
