How to Fix OBS Dropping Frames During a 24/7 Church Sermon Stream

Find out whether OBS frame drops come from the network, rendering, or encoding—and fix the right problem before your church’s YouTube stream.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with View → Stats in OBS while the problem is happening. If Dropped Frames (Network) rises, troubleshoot the connection to the streaming service. If Frames Missed Due to Rendering Lag or Skipped Frames Due to Encoding Lag rises, reduce computer and OBS workload instead. “Dropping frames” alone does not identify the cause, and no single setting guarantees a 24/7 stream.

Identify which OBS counter is rising

Open View → Stats and watch the counters during a representative sermon stream. OBS separates connection trouble from rendering and encoding performance problems; changing bitrate will not necessarily help if the network counter is not the one rising. OBS explains that network-dropped frames indicate a connection to the remote server that is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate in its Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide.

  • Dropped Frames (Network): follow the network troubleshooting steps below.
  • Frames Missed Due to Rendering Lag: OBS is struggling to composite and render the scene; reduce GPU pressure.
  • Skipped Frames Due to Encoding Lag: encoding is not keeping pace; reduce workload or output demands.

More than one counter can rise. If so, address each corresponding cause rather than treating every symptom as an internet problem.

Fix network-dropped frames

1. Make bitrate fit stable upload capacity

In OBS, open Settings → Output and lower the video bitrate if the network-drop counter rises. OBS’s 2024 troubleshooting guidance calls 75% of total upload speed a good starting point, not a guarantee; use a bitrate your connection can sustain consistently, and stay within the destination platform’s limits. A headline speed-test result does not prove that the route to the actual ingest server is stable.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If you stream to YouTube, use its current encoder guidance as a platform reference, then test your actual setup. YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions list H.264 at 1080p30 as 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended, and H.264 at 720p30 as 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube’s recommendations for those settings, not a promise that your church’s connection can deliver them reliably. The table also covers other codecs and frame rates, so consult the entry matching your chosen configuration.

2. Test the connection path

  1. Use Ethernet when practical. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming. If the computer has a compatible Ethernet port and a practical cable run, a Cat6 Ethernet cable is one option; check port and installation compatibility before buying hardware.
  2. Try another ingest server, if available. You can also compare with another streaming service as a diagnostic. OBS says this can help determine whether the issue is service-related; it does not necessarily fix a problem specific to one service’s route.
  3. Check software that can interfere. Temporarily investigate VPNs, security software, network “optimization” tools that may deprioritize OBS, and outdated network drivers. Change one variable at a time so you can tell whether it helped.
  4. Inspect the rest of the network. Check the modem and router, cables, network card, switches, extenders, and other devices using the connection. If the issue persists after local checks, OBS recommends contacting your ISP.

OBS’s troubleshooting guide also lists network optimizations and TCP pacing (Windows only), the default Bind to IP option, and an IPv4-only test. Treat these as diagnostic options, not universal fixes: if testing IPv4-only makes no difference, restore the default IPv4/IPv6 setting.

3. Consider dynamic bitrate only as a fallback

OBS can adjust bitrate dynamically when the connection cannot keep up. This may help a stream continue during congestion, but OBS cautions that it does not fix the underlying cause and lowers video quality. Use it as a fallback, not as a substitute for resolving an unstable connection.

Fix rendering or encoding lag

OBS uses the GPU to composite and render scenes. If the rendering- or encoding-lag counter rises, lowering network bitrate alone may leave the cause untouched. OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide recommends freeing GPU capacity and reducing output demands.

  • Close other applications competing for computer resources, especially GPU-heavy programs.
  • Simplify scenes and scene collections; remove sources and effects that are not needed for the service.
  • Reduce output resolution or frame rate if necessary. OBS specifically suggests trying 30 fps when 60 fps is not working.

A church-focused guide from ChurchLab also advises simplifying scenes and closing unnecessary apps. Treat that as practical vendor guidance, not a platform rule. Do not apply performance remedies as if they solve network drops unless the relevant performance counter is also rising.

Set up and test a YouTube sermon stream

  1. Choose a conservative output you can sustain. Use YouTube’s current codec- and frame-rate-specific table, along with OBS Stats and tests on your actual connection, to choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. YouTube advises choosing a quality reliable for your connection.
  2. Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube lists constant bitrate (CBR) and recommends a two-second keyframe frequency in its encoder guidance.
  3. Test before the service. Run a test with representative audio and video movement; static slides alone may not reveal problems that appear with motion. Check both OBS Stats and YouTube’s stream health messages.
  4. Monitor during the event. Watch the counters and platform health rather than assuming a successful test guarantees a full day of uninterrupted operation.
  5. Prepare a lower-demand fallback. If connection capacity or computer load proves inadequate, have a lower bitrate or resolution ready. ChurchLab suggests 1080p30 as a starting point for a reliable system and 720p30 where stability matters more, but follow YouTube’s current settings guidance and the fault shown by OBS.

YouTube’s recommendations are starting constraints, not evidence that a particular church connection can reliably sustain a chosen rate. OBS connects to the service selected by the broadcaster; it does not operate OBS streaming servers, as described in the OBS Help Portal.

Troubleshooting by symptom

What you see Likely area to investigate What to try
Dropped Frames (Network) rises Connection stability or bitrate on the route to the ingest server Lower bitrate, test another ingest server if available, use Ethernet, check interference and network hardware, then contact the ISP if local checks do not resolve it.
Frames Missed Due to Rendering Lag rises GPU rendering pressure Close competing applications, simplify scenes, or reduce output resolution or frame rate.
Skipped Frames Due to Encoding Lag rises Encoding workload Reduce workload and output demands; try 30 fps if 60 fps is not working.
Network drops continue despite lower bitrate Possible unstable route, interference, or network hardware issue Check VPN/security/network tools, drivers, router, cables, switches and extenders; test another route or service for diagnosis, and escalate to the ISP when appropriate.
Dynamic bitrate keeps changing quality Connection cannot consistently sustain the configured rate Use the quality loss as a signal to investigate the underlying connection; dynamic bitrate is a fallback, not a root-cause fix.
