First identify which OBS counter is rising: network dropped frames point to an unstable or insufficient connection to YouTube; rendering lag or encoding overload point to the computer’s ability to prepare frames. These are different problems, so changing bitrate will not fix every symptom. Check OBS Stats and YouTube stream health, then change one setting at a time and test the stream before leaving it unattended.
Tell network drops apart from rendering or encoding problems
While the stream is running, open View → Stats in OBS and note which indicator changes. OBS defines dropped frames as frames that fail to reach the streaming service because the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. That counter alone does not show that the encoder or computer is at fault. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide describes the symptom as: “Dropped frames means that your connection to remote server isn’t stable or you can’t keep up with your set bitrate.”

Rendering lag means OBS cannot get frames from the GPU to the encoder quickly enough; encoding overload means the computer is struggling to encode them. Those symptoms call for reducing system workload, not merely changing the network. OBS’s encoding performance guidance and status indicator overview distinguish these indicators. Viewer buffering by itself does not prove OBS is dropping network frames; it can occur elsewhere on a viewer’s playback path.

Fix network dropped frames in the least disruptive order
- Record what is happening. Note the dropped-frame percentage, configured bitrate, time of occurrence, OBS log, and any stream-health messages in YouTube Live Control Room. A speed test is only a snapshot; it does not establish that the route to YouTube remains stable throughout a long stream.
- Lower the video bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it. In OBS, open Settings → Output and reduce the streaming video bitrate. OBS suggests starting at about 75% of total upload speed, but this is a rule of thumb, not a guarantee. Use less when upload speed varies or other devices share the connection. The correct value depends on stable upload capacity and your YouTube codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Check for local network interference. Temporarily test with a VPN off. Check whether firewall or antivirus software, network-optimization tools, or traffic-prioritization software are interfering with OBS. Restore security protection after the test; if security software is implicated, use an appropriate application exception rather than leaving protection disabled. Update network drivers using the computer or motherboard maker’s guidance.
- Try Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi. OBS recommends a wired connection where Wi-Fi may be unstable. If connectivity problems suggest it, restart the modem and router. Treat cable, router, modem, switch, extender, or network-card replacement as diagnosis-dependent: replacing hardware will not fix an ISP or route problem without evidence that the hardware is at fault.
- Check whether the issue is specific to the platform or route. OBS suggests testing another stream server or service as a diagnostic. For YouTube, use an alternate ingest option only if it is available in your current setup; do not assume a server selector intended for another platform applies. If local checks do not resolve persistent connection problems, contact your ISP with timestamps, logs, and symptoms.
- Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback. OBS offers a beta option that can lower the bitrate when the network cannot keep up. It may reduce picture quality and does not fix the underlying connection issue.
Reduce rendering lag or encoding overload
If OBS Stats shows rendering lag or encoding overload rather than network drops, lower the workload on the computer:
#1 Best Overall
- 40 Gbps 2000 Mhz High Speed: The Cat 8 ethernet cable support max. 40 Gbps data transfer and 2000 MHz Brandwith, ideal for gaming and streaming, greatly improving upload and download speed, sound, image and resolution quality
- Excellent Anti-interference: The ethernet cable comes with 4 shielded foiled twisted pairs (F/FTP), pure copper core and gold-plated RJ45 connector, reducing interference, noise and crosstalk, making network speed faster and more stable
- Marvelous Durability: Internet cable wrapped with quality cotton braided cord, which makes the LAN cable stronger and more durable. The test proves that this internet cable can be bent at least 10000 times without broken, very suitable for long-term use
- PoE Supported: All lengths of ethernet cord can support the PoE power supply function except 65ft. You don't need additional power supply when installing a PoE camera, which is very convenient and safe
- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
- Reduce output resolution or frame rate; OBS suggests trying 30 fps if 60 fps is not working.
- Simplify scenes and sources, and reduce demanding filters or browser sources.
- Free GPU capacity by reducing other GPU-intensive work while OBS is streaming.
For a music radio stream with mostly static visuals, a lower frame rate may be adequate, but the right production choice depends on the visuals. Do not treat these performance steps as a remedy for network delivery drops.
Verify YouTube encoder settings and choose a sustainable quality
YouTube’s live encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, or AV1, up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds; it recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Its recommended H.264 bitrates include:

| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not evidence that a particular internet connection can hold the rate. The guidance gives different bitrate ranges for H.264 and AV1/H.265, so match the table to the codec you actually select. Choose a quality that fits the stable upload route, leaves headroom for other household use, and suits the stream’s visuals. YouTube advises choosing quality your connection can reliably support, testing before going live with representative audio and movement, and monitoring stream health. Its guidance says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStabilize a 24/7 stream before leaving it unattended
Make one change at a time and observe whether the relevant counter stops rising. Keep a note of the previous setting and the time of each test so you can relate changes to OBS logs and YouTube health messages. Run the selected configuration with the actual audio and visuals, then monitor YouTube stream health before relying on it for a continuous run. No single bitrate, setting, or troubleshooting step guarantees 24/7 uptime; the result depends on the computer, ISP, route, and current stream diagnostics.
