How to Fix OBS Audio Monitoring Echo on a 24/7 YouTube Music Stream

If your YouTube music stream sounds doubled, first check whether OBS is capturing the same audio device twice: once in Settings > Audio and again as an Audio Input/Output Capture source in a scene. Keep just one capture path for that device, then make a short recording and check the YouTube playback before leaving the stream running.

Find out where the echo is happening

“Echo” can describe two different problems: the stream mix itself contains duplicated audio, or your headphones/local speakers make the audio sound doubled while the recording is clean. Separate those cases before changing settings.

  1. Play the music and watch the OBS audio mixer. Note which meters move and whether the same output appears as both a global Desktop Audio device and a scene-level Audio Output Capture source.
  2. Make a short recording with the same sources and monitoring arrangement you use for the stream.
  3. Listen to the recording, then compare it with the audio in your monitoring device. If the recording is doubled, investigate the capture paths. If it is clean but your headphones sound doubled, investigate monitoring or local device playback.

OBS recommends recording and listening before going live. A local monitor is not the same as the encoded audio viewers receive, so also check the YouTube playback path before relying on a long stream.

Remove duplicate audio capture in OBS

OBS warns that an Audio Input/Output Capture source can cause echo when the same device is also selected in Settings > Audio. Its guidance is to disable global devices when adding those devices directly to scenes. The fix is to use one deliberate capture path per device, not to change unrelated stream settings. 1. Open the relevant scene and inspect its audio sources. Identify any Audio Output Capture or Audio Input Capture source for the device playing the music.
  2. Open Settings > Audio and check the global audio devices, including Desktop Audio. See whether the same output is selected there.
  3. Choose which route you intend to use: global capture in Settings > Audio, or a scene-level capture source. Disable or remove the redundant route so the device is captured once.
  4. Play the music again and watch the mixer. Confirm that the duplicate path is gone, then make another short recording and listen back.

OBS’s source names and available capture options depend on the operating system and setup. Its guide says Audio Input/Output Capture is available on Windows and macOS; Linux uses ALSA/PulseAudio sources. If your interface differs, verify the OS, OBS version, active sources, and global audio settings before following platform-specific steps. OBS Audio Sources

Check monitoring without routing it back into the stream

The mixer’s monitor control plays a source through the monitoring device configured in OBS. Monitoring is for listening; it does not establish what viewers hear in the encoded stream. OBS Audio Mixer Guide

  • Share Audio Port: With a shared audio port, easily connect another pair to share music or videos—no splitters or special cables needed.
  1. Open Advanced Audio Properties from the audio mixer.
  2. For diagnosis, turn monitoring off for the source if you do not need to hear it locally.
  3. If you do need monitoring, select the intended monitoring device. Check that the listening output is not being captured back into OBS through another source.
  4. Record a short test. If the file is clean while local listening sounds doubled, focus on monitoring or device playback; if the file is doubled, return to the scene sources and global device selection.

Exact routing depends on the connected devices and operating system. Headphones can help you listen closely during the check, but they do not fix duplicate capture by themselves.

Verify the result in YouTube playback

After the local recording sounds right, check the stream playback on YouTube, preferably with local monitoring muted so you do not confuse the monitor signal with the viewer playback. Confirm the music sounds correct there before leaving a continuous stream unattended.

YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a Live server URL and stream key entered in the encoder. Its guidance says to stop sending content to end the stream and states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after ending. That stated archive threshold does not establish that a 24/7 broadcast will be stored as one replay. YouTube encoder guide

YouTube’s latency setting concerns the delay between capture at the encoder and what viewers see; lower latency can mean more playback buffering. DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and continue. These playback options are separate from OBS capture routing and are not remedies for duplicate audio sources. YouTube live settings
