How to Fix OBS Audio Cutting Out During a Continuous Church Stream in India

When OBS audio cuts out during a church stream, first check whether the Audio Mixer meter stops moving. Then make a local recording and compare it with the live stream. Those two checks help locate the fault: before or inside OBS, in the computer’s rendering or encoding, or on the network and delivery path. Do not change bitrate or buy equipment until you know which part is failing.

Find where the audio disappears

  1. Watch the OBS Audio Mixer during a dropout. If the relevant meter stops moving, OBS may have lost the selected source, or the signal may have stopped reaching OBS. In Settings → Audio, verify the intended microphone, mixer output, or audio interface is selected. If the source is added to a scene, check that the scene source is enabled and points to the correct device.
  2. Record a representative service segment locally. Include the usual microphones, music, and scene changes. Listen to the recording and compare it with the live stream. If the recording also drops out, investigate the signal path into OBS and the computer. If it is clean but the live stream drops out, focus on network delivery, ingest, and the platform’s stream health.
  3. Check OBS’s status indicators at the time of the problem. Note whether dropped frames are rising or OBS reports rendering or encoding overload. These indicate different problems and call for different fixes.
  4. Write down the exact symptom and timing. Note which source disappears, whether the meter moves, whether the recording is affected, the OBS warning or counter, and how long the stream had been running. This makes a repeat test or support request much more useful.

OBS recommends testing a few minutes before going live rather than starting an event without a test. If the church uses YouTube Live, include representative audio and movement in that test and monitor YouTube’s stream health during the service.

If the OBS meter stops moving

A stationary meter points first to capture or the upstream signal—not to the stream’s video bitrate. Trace the audio path from the microphone and mixer to the interface or computer, then into OBS.

Verify the mixer output and physical connection

  • Confirm that the mixer is sending the intended bus or output. A fader, mute, bus assignment, or output selection can leave OBS without the service mix even while the room speakers still work.
  • Check that the cable is seated and that the interface is powered. If the operating system no longer recognizes the interface, restore that connection before changing OBS encoding settings.
  • Check the source at the mixer and interface while the fault is present. If the mixer’s output is already silent, troubleshoot the mixer routing or upstream microphones; if the mixer output is active but OBS is not receiving it, focus on the interface, operating-system device selection, and OBS source.

Confirm the selected OBS source

In Settings → Audio, inspect the global audio devices and select the intended device rather than relying on an unspecified or unavailable default. If capture is configured per scene, open the affected scene and check its audio source. Device names can change after reconnecting hardware, changing USB ports, or restarting the computer, so confirm the selection against the device currently connected.

Remove duplicate capture paths

If the same physical device is enabled in Settings → Audio and also added to a scene as an Audio Input Capture or Audio Output Capture source, disable one capture path. OBS warns that capturing the same device both ways can cause echo. Use a scene-specific source when different scenes need different active devices. On Linux, the available capture sources use ALSA or PulseAudio.

Test one change at a time

Make a local recording after each change. If you change device selection, cabling, mixer routing, and scene sources all at once, you may hide the actual cause. A clean recording is evidence that the tested local signal path worked during that segment; it does not by itself prove that the live network path is reliable.

If the local recording is clean but viewers hear dropouts

That pattern shifts attention from the microphone and local capture toward stream delivery. In OBS, rising dropped-frame counts indicate that the connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the chosen bitrate. A dropout heard by viewers is not automatically a dropped-frame problem, so use the OBS indicators and the platform’s stream-health information rather than guessing.

Fit the video bitrate to stable upload

OBS’s connection guide suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for video bitrate. It is a starting point, not a guarantee: the usable upload capacity can vary with local congestion and other traffic, especially during the actual service window. Measure the church connection when it matters, account for competing uploads, and test the selected bitrate before the event. Use the streaming service’s limits and recommendations as well.

Dynamic bitrate can lower quality to keep a stream going when network capacity falls, but it does not repair the underlying connection or route problem. If the stream remains unstable, test a wired Ethernet connection, the selected service or ingest server, VPN and security software, and network hardware. If those checks do not resolve it, ask the ISP about the route and connection at the church. There is no established India-wide upload target or provider-specific cause for this symptom; the useful measurement is the stable upload available at this location during the service.

Distinguish audio loss from video or delivery trouble

  • Mixer meter moves, recording is clean, but the live stream is not: inspect OBS dropped frames, platform stream health, and the connection to the ingest server.
  • Mixer meter moves, but the local recording also has a gap: check OBS source behavior, scene changes, system performance, and whether the correct audio is being recorded.
  • Mixer meter stops: trace the input, mixer routing, interface, and selected capture device before changing network bitrate.
  • Audio is present but harsh or distorted: check levels and clipping separately from intermittent silence.

If OBS reports rendering or encoding overload

Overload is different from a dead input meter. OBS uses GPU resources to compose scenes, and complex scenes can exceed what the computer can render or encode reliably. Simplify the workload and repeat the local-recording test.

  • Reduce unnecessary browser sources, animated elements, filters, and other demanding scene components.
  • Lower the output resolution or frame rate if the computer cannot sustain the current settings.
  • Check whether the overload warning and audio symptom occur together. Do not treat a motionless input meter as an encoding problem without evidence of overload.

Check audio level and format

Prevent clipping

Keep the delivered output below 0 dBFS, the digital full-scale maximum. Audio above that level can clip and sound distorted. Clipping is not the same as a source disappearing: if the sound is missing altogether, return to the meter and signal-path checks rather than trying to solve silence with level adjustments.

For a YouTube Live stream

If the church streams to YouTube, follow YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the chosen stream format. Its published recommendations list AAC or MP3 audio, recommend RTMPS, and specify 44.1 kHz for stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1 surround. The listed recommended audio bitrates are 128 kbps for stereo and 384 kbps for 5.1. These are YouTube encoder specifications, not a diagnosis or guaranteed cure for dropouts. Keep the computer, interface, OBS, and stream settings coherent with the format in use, then test with the actual service mix.

When to consider replacing an interface

Start with the equipment already installed. Confirm the mixer’s output, the interface’s power and operating-system recognition, and OBS’s selected source. A USB audio interface is a reasonable purchase to consider only if the mixer has no usable computer input path or the existing interface has been shown to be faulty. Compatibility depends on the mixer output, operating system, driver support, and exact interface model.

Before buying, check that the interface accepts the mixer’s output type and level, has the connectors and power arrangement the church needs, and is supported by the operating system. Decide whether the workflow needs stereo or multiple discrete channels. A Focusrite interface, for example, can be configured as an OBS source according to Focusrite’s documentation, but that alone does not establish that any particular model will suit a given mixer or computer.

Run a pre-service test and capture useful evidence

  1. Set up the usual service scenes, audio sources, mixer routing, and stream destination.
  2. Record locally and stream a short test with representative speech, music, and scene changes.
  3. Watch the OBS Audio Mixer, dropped-frame count, and any rendering or encoding warnings throughout the test.
  4. Check the recording and platform stream health before the service begins.
  5. If the fault returns, save the OBS log from the affected session and note the operating system, OBS version, destination platform, mixer and interface models, and whether the local recording also contains the dropout.

Common causes and what to try

What you observe Likely area to investigate Next check
The mixer meter in OBS stops during the dropout Selected source, mixer output, interface, cable, or operating-system device recognition Check the upstream signal and the device selected in Settings → Audio or the affected scene.
Echo or doubled audio The same device may be captured globally and in a scene Disable one capture path and test again.
Local recording is clean; live delivery is not Network, ingest connection, or platform stream health Check dropped frames and stream health; test stable upload, wired Ethernet, server selection, VPN/security software, and network hardware.
OBS reports rendering or encoding overload Scene and computer workload Simplify scenes and reduce output resolution or frame rate, then retest.
Audio is harsh or distorted rather than absent Output level may be clipping Keep the delivered signal below 0 dBFS and check the mixer gain structure.

Continuous runtime alone is not established as the cause of OBS audio dropouts, and no universal platform runtime limit is established here. If the stream is exceptionally long, check the current policy of the destination platform. The exact platform, duration, computer, and audio hardware all matter to diagnosis.

Or let it run in the cloud

This is an option only if the church wants to loop uploaded recordings on YouTube; StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and is not a way to send a live camera or mixer feed. It does not diagnose a faulty microphone, mixer, interface, or OBS audio path. For a prerecorded service or other uploaded video, the steps are simple:

  1. Upload a recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add the YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on.

Every slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers. StreamNeo can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are supported in India, and card checkout is available worldwide. See StreamNeo or plan details, then start the free day.
