Quick decision checklist
- Open the PlayStation Service Status page for your region.
- If Account Management, Gaming and Social, or PlayStation Store shows maintenance or an outage, close the game and retry after Sony marks the service operational.
- If all services are operational, restart the console and router, then test the connection.
- Try Ethernet, install any system-software update, and sign in again.
- Restore licenses only when the symptom is a locked digital game or license-verification failure.
- Contact PlayStation Support if the code continues after PSN is working.
What NP-35000-8 means
Sony defines NP-35000-8 as “PlayStation Network is undergoing maintenance. Please try again later” on its official error page. Your home internet can be working normally while the console displays the code. By itself, it does not show that the hard drive, router, game data, or account is damaged, and it is not a reason to change DNS or factory-reset the console.
Sony’s error-code directory catalogs NP-35000-8 as a PS4 code. A PS5 user can encounter a related PSN or license problem, including while playing a PS4 game, but Sony does not list this code as a PS5-specific code.
1. Check PlayStation Network status first
Open the PlayStation Service Status page and inspect Account Management, Gaming and Social, PlayStation Store, and any other affected category. Check the page for your country or region. If a service is unavailable, leave the console connected and try later. Sony does not promise a standard duration for every maintenance event.

Why waiting matters
Local restarts, DNS changes, license restoration, and game reinstalls cannot repair a server-side maintenance window. Repeated sign-ins or account changes can also complicate a purchase or license check. After service returns, verify any purchase, download, or subscription action that was interrupted.
2. If the status page is green
Restart the console
Use the PS4 Power menu and choose the normal restart or turn it off fully before powering it on again. On PS5, choose Power > Restart PS5. Do not unplug a console while it is saving data or installing an update. Sony recommends restarting for broader connection and game-start problems: game-launch troubleshooting.
Restart your network
Restart the modem or router using its manufacturer’s procedure, wait for internet service to return, and retry PlayStation Network. This is general network troubleshooting, not a guaranteed NP-35000-8 remedy.

Run the connection test
- PS4: Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection.
- PS5: Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection.
These paths are documented in Sony’s connection troubleshooting guidance. If Wi-Fi is unstable, connect the console directly to the router with Ethernet and run the test again. Ethernet removes wireless interference from the diagnosis, but it cannot bypass PSN maintenance.
3. Update system software
- PS4: Settings > System Software Update; see Sony’s PS4 software page.
- PS5: Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings; see Sony’s PS5 support page.
Install an available update, restart, and test again. If normal updating fails, Sony documents USB and Safe Mode update requirements at system-software update in Safe Mode; use that only for an update problem, not as the first response to a maintenance notice.
4. Restore licenses only for digital-content symptoms
Use license troubleshooting when a purchased game has a padlock, fails to start, or Store content remains unavailable after PSN recovers. Sign in with the account that bought the game. Sony’s full steps are in downloaded-game troubleshooting.

A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. - On PS4, check that the purchasing account has activated the console as its primary PS4, then restore licenses.
- On PS5, restore licenses and check Console Sharing and Offline Play.
Restoring licenses is not a general cure for an active outage, and it does not require deleting the game. Do not repeatedly deactivate every console unless Sony specifically instructs you.
5. Optional DNS troubleshooting—only after PSN is operational
Sony’s NP-35000-8 guidance does not prescribe a DNS change. Consider manual DNS only if the status page is green, the console’s test reports DNS or connection failures, and restarting the router and trying Ethernet did not help. Public DNS may resolve a local name-resolution problem; it cannot fix PlayStation-side maintenance. Sony lists DNS-related errors separately in its error directory.

Use Safe Mode only when PSN is operational, the code persists after restarts and connection checks, and other system or content behavior is abnormal.

- Press and hold the power button again; release it after the second beep, about seven seconds after the first.
- Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button.
- PS4: choose Rebuild Database when indexing or content problems remain.
- PS5: Sony lists Clear System Software Cache and Rebuild Database.
These options are different from initialization. Safe Mode details are available through Sony’s PS5 support information. Rebuild Database may help broader system-index issues, but it is not Sony’s direct fix for NP-35000-8.

- Do not initialize PS4 or reset PS5 for this code alone.
- Do not delete and reinstall games before confirming that PSN is operational.
- Do not assume changing DNS bypasses maintenance.
- Do not deactivate all consoles without Sony’s direction.
Sony explains the difference between non-destructive default settings and destructive resets at restore-default-settings support. PS5 reset and PS4 initialization erase user and game data and cannot be undone; back up important data before any destructive procedure.
When to contact PlayStation Support
Contact PlayStation Support when the status page shows services running but NP-35000-8 continues for an extended period, multiple networks or consoles show the same problem, purchased content remains locked, transactions or subscriptions are affected, the console cannot update or start normally, or another error code appears.

Record the exact code, date and time, game or service involved, the status-page result, connection-test result, and steps already tried. Sony asks for error codes, a detailed description, reproduction steps, and a timestamp when investigating persistent content problems.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is NP-35000-8 permanent?
Usually no. It normally clears when the relevant PlayStation Network maintenance or interruption ends. If it remains while Sony reports all services operational, follow the local connection and account checks above.
Is PSN down or is my internet broken?
Check Sony’s Service Status page first, then run the console’s internet test. A reported outage points to PSN; a failed local test points to your network. A green status page cannot rule out a regional or account-specific problem.
Will restoring licenses delete my games?
No. Restoring licenses addresses ownership checks. Use the purchasing account and verify the PS4 primary-console or PS5 Console Sharing setting.
How long does PlayStation maintenance take?
There is no universal duration. Retry when Sony’s status page reports the affected service as operational rather than relying on a fixed number of minutes or hours.
