Discord notifications have several independent controls. A muted server or channel, Do Not Disturb, operating-system permissions, Focus modes, background restrictions, or Discord being open and focused on another device can each stop a different kind of alert. Start with the controlled test below instead of reinstalling immediately.
- Set your Discord status to Online.
- Set the affected server to All Messages temporarily, ensure the channel is not muted, and enable Mobile Push Notifications if testing a phone.
- Allow Discord notifications in Windows, macOS, iOS, or Android, and temporarily disable Focus or Do Not Disturb.
- Close or minimize Discord on the device you are testing, then send a message from another account or device.
Identify what is actually failing
Check the result of your test against this table. Pop-ups, sounds, badges, mobile push, and in-app unread indicators can fail independently.

Check Discord’s service status first
If alerts stopped across every server and device at once, check Discord’s official status page. Review Push Notifications, Desktop, iOS, Android, Web, and Client separately; one component can be degraded while messages and voice continue working. The page was operational on August 18, 2026, but its status can change at any time. A green page makes a broad outage less likely; it does not rule out an account, device, or network problem.
Fix Discord’s own notification settings
Enable desktop alerts and sounds
Open User Settings → Notifications (labels can vary by client version). Turn on Enable Desktop Notifications for pop-ups, then review message, mention, call, activity, and other sound toggles. Discord explains these controls in its desktop notification guide. A sound can be disabled even when banners work, and an operating system can suppress banners while Discord remains configured correctly.

Open your avatar menu and select Online. Discord’s desktop guidance associates Do Not Disturb with silenced notification behavior; the exact effect can differ between sounds, banners, and mobile push, so test after changing it. Online, Idle, and Invisible primarily affect presence.
Repair server, category, channel, and thread settings
Server notification settings
- Open the server menu (right-click the server icon on desktop, or tap the server name on mobile).
- Choose Notification Settings.
- For a diagnostic test, choose All Messages rather than Only @mentions or Nothing.
- Turn off Mute Server and review suppression for @everyone, @here, roles, and new events.
- Enable Mobile Push Notifications when phone alerts are required.
Discord documents these server controls in its mobile notification guide and notification settings guide. Muting a server disables notifications across its channels and disables mobile push for that server.

Channel, category, and thread overrides
If only one channel fails, do not reset every device setting. Right-click the channel on desktop or long-press it on mobile, open Notification Settings, and choose Use Server Default or All Messages for testing. Inspect the containing category and any thread for a mute or custom override. Discord states that channel and category overrides can supersede the server default.
Match the event to the chosen alert type
Only @mentions will not alert for ordinary messages. Server settings can also suppress @everyone, @here, role mentions, and new events. Direct messages, replies, calls, activities, and forum activity have separate eligibility and sound controls.
Windows: allow Discord through system notifications
- Open Settings → System → Notifications.
- Select Discord and enable notifications.
- Allow banners and Notification Center alerts, and check sound and priority options.
- Temporarily disable or adjust Do not disturb or a Focus session.
Windows can show an alert in Notification Center without a banner, suppress notifications during a full-screen game, or route sound to another output. Microsoft notes that menu names vary by Windows edition and build; see its current notification documentation. Discord also identifies Windows Focus Assist as a possible pop-up blocker.
macOS: check Notifications and Focus
- Open System Settings → Notifications → Discord.
- Enable notifications and select the desired alert style.
- Allow Notification Center, sounds, badges, and lock-screen delivery as needed.
- Review Focus modes, schedules, and allowed apps.
Native Discord and browser Discord have separate permissions. Apple documents independent controls for banners, sounds, badges, previews, grouping, and lock-screen delivery at its notification settings page.
Android: permissions, categories, and background delivery
- Open Settings → Notifications → App notifications → Discord (the path varies by manufacturer).
- Enable the master permission and inspect individual categories for servers, direct messages, mentions, and other events.
- For the desired result, enable sound, pop-up/banner behavior, lock-screen visibility, and notification dots.
- Check battery and background restrictions for Discord.
Android can mark a category Silent, bundle lower-priority alerts, or disable dots while banners still work. Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus, Google, and other manufacturers expose different battery menus. Android’s guidance is at Google’s notification help page. Treat battery optimization as a device-dependent possibility, not a universal Discord fault: loosening it can improve delivery but may increase battery use.
iPhone and iPad: allow every delivery method you need
- Open Settings → Notifications → Discord.
- Turn on Allow Notifications.
- Enable Lock Screen, Notification Center, and Banners as required.
- Enable Sounds and Badges if you want audio and an app-icon count.
- Review Focus modes and Scheduled Summary, which can silence or delay delivery.
Discord says iOS app-wide notification permission is managed in device Settings rather than through the same global in-app menu used on Android. Apple lists the separate controls at its notification support page.

Understand multiple-device behavior
Discord does not promise identical alerts on every signed-in device. Its mobile documentation says notifications do not appear while the Discord app is open and in focus on that phone or tablet. Test one device at a time: close Discord on desktop and lock the phone, send a message, then reverse the setup. Do not rely on unofficial network-request, modified-client, or developer-console tricks.
Recovery steps after settings are correct
Restart, update, and refresh the session
- Quit Discord completely, restart the computer or phone, and reopen Discord.
- Install the latest Discord build available for your device and apply pending Windows, macOS, iOS, or Android updates.
- If one account fails while another works on the same device, log out, fully quit Discord, reopen it, and sign in again.
Discord has shipped reliability fixes affecting mobile push behavior, including the February 3, 2025 patch notes; version-specific bugs remain possible.
Reinstall only as a later step
Reinstalling can repair a stuck permission registration or corrupted client, but it cannot unmute a server, change a channel set to Nothing, override Focus, or fix an outage. Before uninstalling, confirm your password, two-factor authentication access, and backup codes. After reinstalling, allow notifications when prompted and repeat the controlled test.

Use the symptom to choose the fix
Mentions work but ordinary messages do not
Change the server, category, or channel from Only @mentions/Mentions to All Messages or Use Server Default. This is normally an intentional preference, not an operating-system failure.

Check that server’s mute state, notification mode, mention suppression, category overrides, and Mobile Push Notifications switch.
Only sound is missing
Check Discord’s sound toggles, the Windows or macOS mixer and output device, headset or Bluetooth routing, and silent Android categories. Reinstallation is unnecessary when banners already work.
Only pop-ups are missing
Check Enable Desktop Notifications, system notification permission, banner style, Focus/Do Not Disturb, and full-screen suppression.
Only one channel or thread fails
Inspect its override, category, mute state, and whether you follow or joined the thread. Confirm the event type is eligible for notification.

Badges are missing but alerts work
Enable Badges on iOS or notification dots on Android; these indicators are separate from banners and sounds.

Contact Discord Support after status is operational, permissions and overrides are correct, and restart/update/logout testing fails on more than one network or client. Include your platform, client type (native app or browser), affected servers and channels, whether in-app unread indicators appear, and the results of the controlled test. That information distinguishes a client-registration problem from a server or account setting.

Why does Discord notify me only when the app is closed?
Discord’s mobile documentation says notifications do not appear while the app is open and in focus on that device. Test with the phone locked.
Will reinstalling Discord delete my servers or messages?
Reinstalling removes the local app, not your Discord account, servers, or cloud messages. Confirm your password and two-factor authentication access first.
