Start with Bluetooth discovery, distance, and the saved pairing record before resetting anything. Keep the headphones within about 10 meters (33 feet), toggle Bluetooth or restart the source device, forget the old Nothing entry, and pair again. If that fails, identify the exact Nothing model: the case button, LED signal, reconnect timeout, and reset sequence differ between Nothing Ear, Ear (a), and over-ear headphones.
Use this order first
Work from the least disruptive fix to the most disruptive. Settings changes and moving closer do not erase connection data; forgetting a device removes the old Bluetooth record; a factory reset clears the product’s connection state and must follow the instructions for the exact model.

| The Nothing device does not appear in Bluetooth scanning | Turn Bluetooth off and on, then restart the phone, tablet, or computer and scan again. | Use the model-specific reset or forced-reboot procedure only after confirming the model. |
| It pairs but drops out nearby | Move the source device close, reduce obstacles, and remove the old pairing record before pairing again. | Check competing connections, wired audio, reconnect timing, and then reset. |
| It will not reconnect after going out of range | Bring it back within range and follow the model’s reconnect window. | Use the case-close/open sequence for Ear (a), or the headphone pairing control for applicable over-ear models. |
| Bluetooth stops whenever a cable is connected | Unplug USB-C or 3.5 mm audio. | On applicable Nothing headphones this is intentional priority for wired audio, not a Bluetooth failure. |
Identify the exact Nothing model before resetting
Do not assume that every Nothing product uses the same button or timing. The instructions below cover different products and are not interchangeable.

- Over-ear Nothing headphones covered by the auto-reconnect guidance: startup first tries the last connected device, then enters a timed pairing sequence; the headphone pairing button is also used for reset.

1. Restore Bluetooth discovery
Make the source device scan
- Open Bluetooth settings on the phone, tablet, or computer.
- Confirm Bluetooth is enabled and that the device is actively searching for nearby products.
- Put the Nothing product into its normal pairing mode according to its model instructions.
- Run a fresh scan rather than selecting an old entry that is stuck on “not connected.”
Nothing Support notes that a phone or computer can have a Bluetooth discovery problem. Toggle Bluetooth off, wait briefly, turn it back on, and scan again. If the product still does not appear, restart the source device before treating the headphones as defective.
Remove the old pairing record
A saved but damaged pairing record can prevent a clean connection. In the source device’s Bluetooth list, select the Nothing headphones or earbuds and choose Forget, Remove device, or the equivalent command. Then scan again and complete pairing as if the product were new. Clear an old entry on every source device that may be trying to connect, not just the one currently in your hand.
2. Reduce distance and signal obstacles
Nothing’s general earphone guidance recommends keeping the source within 10 meters (33 feet). That is a suggested proximity, not a guaranteed range in every building or outdoor setting. For a dropout test, place the phone or computer in the same room and remove large obstacles between it and the earbuds or headphones.
- Test indoors at close range before judging performance outdoors.
- Keep the source device on your person or on a nearby surface rather than leaving it in another room.
- If the connection improves when you move closer, repeat the test after removing the old pairing record.
- Do not interpret a connection that works at close range as proof that every longer-distance environment will be stable; walls, structures, and surrounding radio activity can change results.
3. Reconnect in the correct state
When another device has priority
Some Nothing headphones try the last device they used before accepting a new connection. If a laptop, tablet, or second phone is nearby, it may be the device being sought. Temporarily disable Bluetooth on competing devices or move them out of range, then place the headphones into pairing mode and scan from the intended source.

Over-ear headphone timing
For the over-ear headphones covered by Nothing’s auto-reconnect article, startup first attempts to reconnect to the last connected device for one minute. If that attempt fails, the headphones remain in pairing mode for two minutes. During that window, search for them from the new source. If the window has expired, press and hold the headphone pairing button until the white LED flashes, then scan again.
Those one-minute and two-minute intervals apply to the headphone product context described by Nothing Support; they are not universal timing rules for every Nothing earbud or headphone model.
Ear (a) out-of-range behavior
Nothing says Ear (a) should reconnect automatically when it returns within range within 10 minutes of an out-of-range disconnection. If more than 10 minutes have passed, place both buds in the case, close the lid for five seconds, and open it to initiate reconnection. If the buds still do not reconnect, forget the old Bluetooth entry and pair again before using the Ear (a) reset procedure.

4. Check for wired-audio priority
On the Nothing headphones covered by the official reconnect guidance, USB-C audio or 3.5 mm audio takes priority over Bluetooth. Nothing Support states that when a wired connection is detected, Bluetooth is automatically disconnected. Remove the USB-C audio cable or 3.5 mm cable, wait for the headphones to resume their wireless state, and then use the pairing or reconnect steps above.

This behavior is different from an intermittent radio link: Bluetooth can appear to “drop” every time a cable is inserted because the headphones are deliberately switching inputs.
5. Reset only the identified model
A reset changes saved connection state, so use it after discovery, proximity, forgetting, and reconnection checks. Keep the product in the physical state specified for its model and watch the indicator for the stated completion signal.
| Model or product context | Reset or recovery action | Completion or timing signal |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing Ear | Place both earbuds in the charging case, leave the case open, and hold the case function button. | Hold for 10 seconds; three red flashes indicate the reset is complete. |
| Ear (a) | For reconnection after a longer out-of-range period, close the case for five seconds and open it. If needed, hold the case function button to reset, then pair again. | For the reset, hold for five seconds until the indicator flashes red for 10 seconds. |
| Over-ear Nothing headphones in the auto-reconnect article | Use the headphone Bluetooth pairing button for the factory-reset instruction, then start pairing again. | Hold the pairing button for 10 seconds or more; the exact LED behavior should be confirmed in the model’s current support article. |
| Headphones not discoverable in the relevant Nothing article | After toggling Bluetooth and restarting the source device, follow the article’s reset guidance. Its escalation procedure describes restarting with the power key while holding the pairing button as USB-C is plugged in and unplugged. | Timing and indicator behavior are model-specific and not stated as a universal rule. |
Nothing Ear reset
- Put both earbuds into their charging case.
- Leave the case open.
- Press and hold the case function button for 10 seconds.
- Release it only after the red light flashes three times.
- Forget any previous Nothing Ear entry on the source device, scan again, and complete a new pairing.
Do not apply this 10-second open-case instruction to Ear (a) or to over-ear headphones.

- If the buds went out of range less than 10 minutes ago, bring them back within range and allow the automatic reconnection attempt.
- If more than 10 minutes have elapsed, put the buds in the case, close it for five seconds, and open it.
- If reconnection still fails, remove the old Bluetooth record and scan again.
- For a reset, use the Ear (a) case-function-button procedure: hold for five seconds until the indicator flashes red for 10 seconds.
- Pair the buds again. If the problem remains, update Nothing X and check the current Ear (a) support instructions.
Over-ear Nothing headphone reset
- Disconnect USB-C and 3.5 mm audio cables so wired input is not taking priority.
- Move competing phones, tablets, and computers out of Bluetooth range or turn their Bluetooth off.
- Start the headphones and allow the one-minute attempt to reach the last connected device.
- If they enter the two-minute pairing window, scan from the intended source.
- If they are no longer discoverable, press the pairing button until the white LED flashes and scan again.
- For a factory reset, hold the Bluetooth pairing button for at least 10 seconds, then forget the old entry and pair again.
The reset button and LED behavior in this sequence belong to the over-ear headphone context described by Nothing Support. Earbud cases use different controls.

When headphones remain invisible to Bluetooth
First toggle Bluetooth and restart the phone or computer. If the headphones still do not appear, the applicable Nothing Support article recommends a reset. It also describes a forced-reboot escalation: restart using the power key while holding the pairing button as the USB-C cable is plugged in and unplugged. Use that procedure only when the article for your exact headphone model identifies the same controls and sequence; do not improvise it on an earbud case.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Update Nothing X after the basic fixes
If discovery, close-range testing, a fresh pairing, and the correct model reset do not resolve the problem, use the Nothing X app to install available software or firmware updates. Keep Nothing X current, but verify the instructions shown for the exact product and phone platform because the reviewed support pages do not state a single app version or a cross-model compatibility chart.
- Open Nothing X with the headphones or earbuds identified.
- Check the product page for an available software or firmware update.
- Follow the app’s update instructions without interrupting the process.
- After the update, remove the old Bluetooth record if it remains, then pair again.
An update is an escalation step, not a substitute for identifying the model. A reset or firmware change can alter saved connection state, so expect to repeat pairing afterward.
Symptom-specific troubleshooting branches
It never appears in the Bluetooth list
- Confirm the source device is scanning, not merely displaying saved devices.
- Toggle Bluetooth and restart the source device.
- Move the Nothing product close and remove nearby competing connections.
- Use the product’s pairing control to make the white LED flash where that behavior applies.
- If it remains missing, follow the exact model’s reset or forced-reboot instructions.
It connects, then disconnects repeatedly
- Run a close-range test within the suggested 10-meter (33-foot) proximity.
- Forget the old pairing record and pair again.
- Check whether another device is the last-used connection target.
- Remove USB-C or 3.5 mm audio on applicable over-ear headphones.
- Reset the identified model, then update Nothing X if the issue continues.
It reconnects only after sitting in the case
For Ear (a), closing the case for five seconds and reopening it is the documented recovery after the 10-minute out-of-range window. For Nothing Ear, use the open-case 10-second reset only when a reset is actually required. Do not treat the two case procedures as equivalents.
Best Value
The problem started after using a second phone or computer
Turn Bluetooth off on the other source temporarily, remove stale Nothing entries from both devices, and pair with the intended source first. Over-ear headphones that prioritize the last connected device may otherwise keep attempting the wrong target during their reconnect period.
Common mistakes that make the problem harder
- Resetting before discovery checks: a reset cannot fix a source device that is not scanning correctly.
- Using the wrong model’s button timing: Nothing Ear uses a 10-second open-case hold, while Ear (a) uses a five-second hold with a different indicator sequence.
- Leaving a cable connected: wired audio intentionally takes priority on applicable Nothing headphones.
- Pairing from a stale entry: remove the old record and perform a fresh scan.
- Testing too far away: Nothing’s 10-meter (33-foot) figure is guidance, not a guarantee through walls or in every outdoor environment.
- Assuming all products share one reconnect timer: the one-minute, two-minute, and 10-minute values belong to specific product instructions.
- Updating without checking the model: Nothing X instructions and available software can vary by product and phone platform.
When to stop troubleshooting and use official support
If the product remains undiscoverable after the source-device restart, close-range test, removal of old pairings, correct model reset, and Nothing X update, consult the current Nothing Support article for that exact model. Give support the model name, source-device platform, whether the product appears during scanning, whether a cable is connected, and which model-specific indicator sequence you observed.
The available support guidance does not establish a universal connection-failure rate, a guaranteed fix rate, or a requirement to buy a replacement, adapter, or repair tool. Do not assume new hardware is needed until the model-specific support process has ruled out discovery, pairing-state, reconnect-priority, and software causes.
