What’s actually slowing this PC down?

If Nothing Ear (open) does not appear in your phone’s Bluetooth list, first toggle Bluetooth off and on or restart the phone. If that fails, put both earbuds in the case, close the lid for 30 seconds, then search again. The documented factory reset is separate: leave both earbuds in the open case, hold the case function button for 10 seconds, and wait for three red flashes. You must then pair the earbuds again.
Use the least disruptive fix for your symptom
Pairing and connection failures do not all have the same cause. A phone that cannot discover the earbuds needs a different first step from earbuds that reconnect to the wrong laptop, and neither symptom is handled exactly like delayed audio after a successful connection.

| Symptom | Start here | Does it require pairing again? |
|---|---|---|
| Ear (open) is missing from the Bluetooth list | Toggle phone Bluetooth, restart the phone, then reboot the earbuds in the closed case for 30 seconds | No, unless you perform the factory reset |
| Earbuds connect to the wrong device | Make the desired phone or computer the most recently connected device; use a five-second case cycle if the connection times out | No |
| Connection was lost after moving away | Return within the automatic-reconnection window, or cycle the case after the timeout | No, unless the case cycle fails and you reset |
| iPhone still shows an old Ear (open) entry after a reset | Forget the saved Bluetooth device in iOS, then pair through Nothing X | Yes |
| Connection works but sound starts late | Check for device-system compatibility involving Fast Pair or Dual Connection; do not assume the earbuds are defective | Not necessarily |
| All documented recovery steps fail | Update Nothing X and check for available earbud software updates | Possibly, if the app directs you to pair again |
Work down the table from the top rather than resetting immediately. A Bluetooth toggle, phone restart, or case reboot preserves your existing pairing. A reset is more disruptive because it requires a new pairing session.
Keep the symptom and the host device in mind while testing. “Missing from the list” means the phone or computer cannot discover Ear (open) at all. “Connected to the wrong device” means discovery is working, but the earbuds are following their most-recent-device rule. “Delayed audio” means Bluetooth has already connected, so repeating discovery and reset steps may not address the underlying compatibility behavior.

When Ear (open) does not appear in Bluetooth settings
1. Refresh Bluetooth on the phone
- Open the phone’s Bluetooth controls and switch Bluetooth off.
- Wait briefly, switch Bluetooth back on, and scan for available devices.
- Look for the Ear (open) name in the available-device list.
- If it is still absent, restart the phone and run the scan again.
Nothing’s troubleshooting guidance treats discovery as a possible phone-side failure. Restarting the phone is therefore a meaningful diagnostic step, not just a generic suggestion. It can clear a stuck Bluetooth scan without changing the earbuds’ pairing state.
2. Check distance and discoverability
Keep the earbuds close to the phone while pairing. Nothing specifies a maximum pairing distance of 10 meters (33 feet). Walls, other radio devices, and a phone that is not currently accepting Bluetooth discovery can make a device appear to be missing even when the earbuds are powered.
- Confirm Bluetooth is enabled on the phone.
- Use the phone’s visible or discoverable mode if its Bluetooth settings expose that control; menu names differ by operating system.
- Keep the open case and earbuds within 10 meters (33 feet) of the phone during the scan.
- Temporarily move away from other phones, tablets, computers, or televisions that may have recently used the earbuds.
The 10-meter figure is Nothing’s product guidance threshold, not a guaranteed indoor distance. Treat it as an upper limit for troubleshooting and start much closer.

If another nearby device was the last one to use Ear (open), switch Bluetooth off on that device temporarily. This does not erase anything; it simply prevents that host from answering before the device you are testing.
3. Reboot the earbuds without resetting them
- Place both earbuds in the charging case.
- Close the lid completely.
- Leave the case closed for 30 seconds.
- Open the case and scan for Ear (open) again in the phone’s Bluetooth settings.
This 30-second closed-case wait is a reboot procedure. It is not the factory reset and should not be described as one. Because it does not intentionally erase the pairing setup, use it before the reset whenever the earbuds simply disappear from the scan.
Do not substitute a quick lid closure for the full interval when diagnosing discovery. The five-second closure used elsewhere in Nothing’s instructions is a reconnection trigger after a timeout; the 30-second closure is the documented reboot for earbuds that are not appearing.
4. Perform the documented factory reset only if discovery still fails
- Put both earbuds in the charging case.
- Leave the lid open.
- Press and hold the function button on the case for 10 seconds.
- Release the button after the red indicator flashes three times.
- With the earbuds reset, start a new Bluetooth scan and pair Ear (open) again.
Nothing Support states that the reset is complete when the red light flashes three times. The reset means you should expect to establish the Bluetooth pairing again; the support material does not define every category of data or setting that may be cleared, so do not assume that it deletes unrelated phone data.

Button timing and lid position are both important. Holding the button with the case closed, or stopping before the three red flashes, does not match the dedicated reset instructions. Once the reset is confirmed, remove any old device record if your phone continues to offer only the previous pairing and then begin a fresh scan.
When Ear (open) connects to the wrong device
Understand the reconnection priority
Ear (open) attempts to reconnect to the device it used most recently. If you have used the earbuds with a phone and then a computer, the computer may be the first device the earbuds seek when you open the case. To make the phone the priority, connect to the phone deliberately and use it as the last active device before putting the earbuds away.
Turning Bluetooth off on nearby devices that you do not want to use can also remove competition during troubleshooting. This is not a factory reset; it simply prevents another previously used device from answering first.
This priority rule explains why repeatedly tapping the phone’s name may appear ineffective: the earbuds may already have completed a connection with the computer. Disconnect or disable Bluetooth on that competing host, return Ear (open) to the case, and then reopen it near the desired device.

Recover from a one-minute connection timeout
Nothing says that if the earbuds cannot find the most recently connected device within one minute after leaving the case, they enter a timeout state. Use this case cycle to initiate another attempt:
- Put both earbuds back in the case.
- Close the lid for five seconds.
- Open the lid and keep the intended phone or computer nearby with Bluetooth enabled.
- Select Ear (open) if it appears in the device list.
The five-second closed-case interval here is a reconnect trigger, not the 30-second reboot and not the 10-second factory reset. Keeping those timings separate prevents an unnecessary reset.
When a range loss breaks the connection
If the earbuds disconnect because you walked out of Bluetooth range, Nothing says they should reconnect automatically when they return within range within 10 minutes. Move back near the phone or computer and allow that interval for the automatic attempt.

Return close to the same host that was connected before the interruption. If another previously paired device is closer or has Bluetooth enabled, it can compete for the most-recent connection. Keep the intended host active while you wait rather than opening several Bluetooth menus at once.
If you return after more than 10 minutes
After more than 10 minutes out of range, Nothing’s guidance changes: manually restart the connection by placing both earbuds in the case, closing the lid for five seconds, and opening it again. Select Ear (open) on the intended device if the prompt or Bluetooth list appears.
The 10-minute period is a product behavior threshold supplied by Nothing, not a measured performance guarantee. Radio interference, the operating system, and another device claiming the most-recent connection can still affect the result.
If the five-second cycle does not work
Repeat the cycle once with the intended device close by and other previously paired devices’ Bluetooth disabled. If the earbuds remain unavailable, use the dedicated reset procedure: both earbuds in the open case, hold the function button for 10 seconds, and wait for three red flashes. Nothing’s range-related article mentions a five-second hold in its recovery flow, while the dedicated reset article specifies 10 seconds and three red flashes. For a clear general reset, follow the dedicated 10-second procedure and use the five-second timing only for the case-cycle reconnection step.
Fix an iPhone that cannot pair after a reset
A reset can leave an old Ear (open) record in iOS. The iPhone may continue trying to use that stale record instead of treating the earbuds as a newly reset device.

Connection succeeds but audio starts late
Delayed sound after a connection is a different symptom from failed pairing. Nothing documents compatibility issues involving Bluetooth Fast Pair and Dual Connection that can delay audio immediately after connecting or when switching music channels. According to Nothing Support, this delay does not indicate a fault with Ear (open).
There is no universal, platform-specific remedy in the support guidance. A reset may therefore fail to change this particular behavior. First identify when the delay occurs:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Immediately after the earbuds connect: the operating system’s Fast Pair behavior may be involved.
- When switching between music sources: Dual Connection compatibility may be involved.
- Only after the earbuds have actually disconnected: use the range and reconnection steps instead.
Keeping these cases separate avoids repeatedly resetting working earbuds for a compatibility symptom that Nothing does not attribute to hardware failure. Note whether the delay happens on one host or on every host; that observation is useful when describing the issue through Nothing’s support flow, even though the published guidance does not promise a platform-specific fix.
Update Nothing X and earbud software
If Bluetooth discovery, reconnection, and the documented reset have not solved the problem, Nothing recommends downloading or updating Nothing X and trying again. The support pages do not specify a current app version or firmware number, so rely on the update notices shown in the app rather than installing a version from an unverified source.
- Install Nothing X from your phone’s official app store if it is not already installed.
- Open Nothing X and allow it to detect Ear (open).
- Check the app for any available app or earbud software update.
- Install the update with the earbuds and case sufficiently charged and kept near the phone.
- After the update, test discovery, reconnection, and audio switching separately.
Nothing’s support material does not publish a firmware number that can be used as a universal target. Menus and update availability can change, so follow the current labels inside Nothing X.
An update is a later step, not a replacement for the discovery and reset sequence. If the app cannot detect Ear (open), first restore a Bluetooth connection using the relevant case procedure. Once the app sees the earbuds, use only the update offered in its current interface.
Reset, reboot, and case-cycle timings at a glance
| Action | Earbud position | Case lid | Timing | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth refresh | Not applicable | Not applicable | Toggle off/on; restart phone if needed | Clear a phone-side discovery problem |
| Earbud reboot | Both earbuds in the case | Closed | 30 seconds | Reboot before a reset when Ear (open) is missing |
| Reconnect case cycle | Both earbuds in the case | Closed, then reopen | Five seconds | Retry after a one-minute timeout or a range-loss timeout |
| Dedicated factory reset | Both earbuds in the case | Open | Hold function button for 10 seconds | Reset and pair again; three red flashes confirm completion |
The lid position matters as much as the timing. Closing the case for 30 seconds is the documented reboot; closing it for five seconds starts another connection attempt; holding the button with the lid open for 10 seconds performs the reset.

A practical decision path
- Not visible at all: refresh Bluetooth, restart the phone, confirm discoverability, move within 10 meters, and perform the 30-second closed-case reboot.
- Still invisible: reset with both earbuds in the open case, hold the function button for 10 seconds, wait for three red flashes, and pair again.
- Wrong device connects: make the desired phone or computer the most recently connected device and disable Bluetooth on competing nearby devices.
- Connection times out: place both earbuds in the case, close it for five seconds, and reopen it.
- Disconnected after walking away: return within 10 minutes for automatic reconnection; after more than 10 minutes, use the five-second case cycle.
- iPhone rejects pairing after reset: forget the saved Ear (open) entry under Settings > Bluetooth, then pair in Nothing X.
- Audio is merely delayed: consider Fast Pair or Dual Connection compatibility before resetting.
- Nothing changes: update Nothing X and follow any software-update instructions shown there.
Checks that prevent repeat failures
- Keep the intended host device close to the earbuds while pairing or reconnecting.
- Before opening the case, turn off Bluetooth on a nearby device that was the last one to use Ear (open).
- Use the 30-second closed-case wait for a reboot and reserve the 10-second button hold for a reset.
- After a reset on iPhone, remove the old Bluetooth record instead of trying to reuse it.
- When testing range, note whether reconnection occurs inside or outside Nothing’s 10-minute guidance window.
- Check Nothing X for updates rather than relying on an assumed app or firmware version.
When the documented fixes are exhausted
If Ear (open) remains undiscoverable after a phone restart, a 30-second case reboot, and the dedicated reset, or if it repeatedly disconnects despite being close to the intended device, use Nothing’s current support channel and the Nothing X support flow. Tell support which step changed the behavior, whether the red indicator flashed three times, which phone or computer was used, and whether the failure occurred during discovery, reconnection, or audio playback. Those details distinguish a Bluetooth-host problem from a reset or software-update problem and prevent repeating every step without a diagnosis.
Record the exact timing that preceded the failure: whether the earbuds were missing immediately, timed out after about one minute, returned inside or outside the 10-minute range window, or connected with only delayed sound. Also state whether the case was open or closed during the button action. These details map directly to the separate Nothing procedures and help support avoid confusing a five-second reconnect cycle with the 10-second reset.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why can’t I see Nothing Ear (open) in my phone’s Bluetooth list?
Toggle Bluetooth off and on, then restart the phone if Ear (open) is still missing. Keep the earbuds within 10 meters (33 feet), place both in the case, close the lid for 30 seconds, and scan again. If discovery still fails, reset with both earbuds in the open case by holding the function button for 10 seconds until the red indicator flashes three times, then pair again.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Why does Ear (open) connect to my laptop instead of my phone?
Ear (open) tries to reconnect to the most recently connected device. Turn off Bluetooth on the laptop or other nearby device, deliberately connect the earbuds to the phone, and use the phone as the last active host before storing the earbuds.
What should I do after Ear (open) times out?
If the earbuds cannot find their most recently connected device within one minute, put both earbuds in the case, close the lid for five seconds, and reopen it near the intended phone or computer. The five-second cycle is a reconnect trigger, not the factory reset.
Will Ear (open) reconnect automatically after I walk out of range?
Nothing says it should reconnect automatically if you return within 10 minutes. After more than 10 minutes out of range, manually restart the connection with the five-second case cycle. If that fails, use the dedicated 10-second reset procedure.
Why can’t my iPhone pair after I reset Ear (open)?
In Settings > Bluetooth, tap the information icon beside the saved Ear (open) entry, choose Forget This Device, confirm, and then pair again through Nothing X. The old iOS record can interfere with a fresh pairing after reset.

Is delayed audio proof that my Ear (open) is defective?
Not necessarily. Nothing documents compatibility issues involving Bluetooth Fast Pair and Dual Connection that can delay sound after connection or while switching music channels, and says this does not indicate a fault with Ear (open). The support guidance does not provide one universal platform-specific fix.
The Bottom Line
Start with a phone Bluetooth refresh, then use the 30-second closed-case reboot. Reserve the open-case, 10-second function-button hold for a true reset; three red flashes confirm it, and you must pair again. Use the five-second case cycle for reconnection timeouts, forget a stale iPhone entry after reset, and check Nothing X for updates if the documented steps do not resolve the problem.
