If Windows Update is stuck, refusing to install, or showing an error, work through the built-in troubleshooter first, then check connectivity, pause settings, storage, services, the update cache, system files, and driver conflicts. The exact code and the percentage where installation stops determine which step is most likely to work. Also check your Windows version: free Windows 10 updates ended on October 14, 2025.
Start by identifying what is actually failing
“Not getting updates” can describe several different failures. Windows may not find an update, download may remain at 0 percent, installation may stop at 100 percent, or an update may repeatedly roll back after a restart. Record the details before changing anything:

- Open Settings > Windows Update and note whether the page says downloading, installing, pending restart, or that no updates are available.
- Write down the exact error code, including its letters and numbers. Codes such as
0xC1900101and0x80070422point to different causes. - Record whether the percentage stops at 0 percent, another download percentage, or 100 percent during installation.
- Check whether the computer is running Windows 11 or Windows 10. To confirm, press
Windows + R, typewinver, and press Enter.
Back up important personal files before clearing update data or repairing system components. The steps below normally preserve documents and applications, but a current backup protects you if an interrupted update exposes an existing disk or system problem.

Confirm a stable connection
Reconnect Wi-Fi or Ethernet and try another network if possible. A connection that works for web browsing can still drop packets during a large update. If you use a VPN, disconnect it temporarily while checking for updates; Microsoft identifies VPN interference as a possible factor in some 0x800f0922 failures.

Make sure updates are not paused
Go to Settings > Windows Update. If the page shows that updates are paused, select Resume updates or wait until the displayed resume date. Pausing delays updates until the selected date; it does not permanently turn off automatic updates.
Restart before deeper repairs
Select Start > Power > Restart, not Shut down. A restart completes pending servicing operations and reloads the update services. After Windows starts, return to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Check available storage
Low storage can prevent an upgrade even when a smaller monthly update would fit. Microsoft lists 16 GB free for a 32-bit upgrade and 20 GB free for a 64-bit upgrade. In Settings > System > Storage (Windows 11) or Settings > System > Storage (Windows 10), remove files you no longer need and empty the Recycle Bin. If the internal drive cannot provide the required room, Microsoft says a USB drive can be used as optional external storage during the update. Use a reliable drive with enough free capacity, keep it connected throughout the process, and do not unplug it while Windows is working.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Run Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter
The troubleshooter is the safest first repair because it checks common service, configuration, and update-state problems without requiring command-line changes. Microsoft describes Windows Update as an essential Windows 11 component that keeps the system secure, stable, and current.
Windows 11
- Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run. On current Windows 11 installations, Windows may open the automated troubleshooter in the Get Help app instead.
- Follow the prompts and allow the tool to apply any recommended changes.
- Restart when it finishes, then open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Windows 10
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update, choose Run the troubleshooter, and follow the prompts.
- Restart the computer and select Check for updates after signing in again.
You can also start the Windows Update troubleshooter through Get Help on supported installations. If it reports that it made a change, restart before testing; otherwise, the service may still be using its old state.
Verify the Windows Update service
Error 0x80070422 commonly means the Windows Update service is disabled or stopped. A stopped service can also cause Windows to sit at 0 percent or report that it cannot check for updates.
- Press
Windows + R, typeservices.msc, and press Enter. - Find Windows Update in the list.
- Double-click it. Set Startup type to Automatic if it is disabled or set to a manual state that prevents starting.
- If Service status is stopped, select Start. If it is already running, select Restart after applying the startup setting.
- Select Apply, then OK. Restart Windows and check for updates again.
Do not disable the service after testing. Windows needs it for update detection, downloading, and installation.

Reset a corrupted Windows Update cache
Corrupted update files or cache data are associated with 0x8007000d and can also produce repeated download or installation failures. Resetting the cache removes downloaded update packages so Windows can create a clean set. It does not delete your personal documents, but back up important files before starting.
- Press
Windows + R, enterservices.msc, and press Enter. - Right-click Windows Update and choose Stop. Leave the Services window open.
- Open File Explorer and go to
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. - Delete the contents of the
SoftwareDistributionfolder. If Windows says a file is in use, confirm that the Windows Update service is stopped and retry. - Return to
services.msc, right-click Windows Update, and select Start. - Restart the computer. Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
The first scan after a cache reset may take longer because Windows must rebuild update information and download packages again. If the folder cannot be emptied, do not force-delete locked files; verify the service state and restart before trying again.
Repair Windows system files
Microsoft recommends System File Checker for several corruption-related update codes, including 0x80070057 and 0x80080005. You need an administrator account.
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter
sfc /scannowand press Enter. - Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Do not close the window while the scan is running.
- Restart Windows, then run Check for updates again.
If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, retry the update after the restart. If it reports that it could not repair some files, save that result and use Microsoft’s current Windows installation or recovery guidance rather than repeatedly deleting system folders.
Resolve driver and software conflicts
Error 0xC1900101: suspect an incompatible driver
0xC1900101 usually indicates a driver incompatibility during an upgrade. Network and display drivers are common suspects in Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance.
- Disconnect unnecessary USB devices, docks, and external hardware before retrying.
- In Device Manager, inspect Network adapters and Display adapters. Update a suspect driver using the hardware maker’s official driver package, or uninstall the device in Device Manager if the problem began immediately after a driver change.
- Restart and retry Windows Update. If the upgrade still fails, perform a clean boot to prevent non-Microsoft startup software from loading during the attempt.
Keep a record of any driver you remove so it can be reinstalled after the update. Do not remove a device driver if you have no practical way to reconnect or reinstall the device.
Temporarily test security software interference
Microsoft lists temporarily disabling third-party antivirus or firewall software as a diagnostic step for some blocking errors. Only do this briefly, while you are actively testing Windows Update, and restore protection immediately afterward. Windows Security should remain enabled where possible. Disabling security software is not a permanent fix and does not remove malware.
Match the error code to the likely cause
| Error code | Likely indication | First actions |
|---|---|---|
0x8007000d |
Corrupted Windows Update files or cache | Run the troubleshooter, then reset C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution |
0x800705b4 |
Installation took too long or was interrupted | Check the connection, restart, and test for security-software interference |
0x80240034 |
Incomplete update or connection issue | Verify Windows Update services and run the troubleshooter |
0x800f0922 |
Insufficient disk space or a component problem; VPN interference is also possible | Free storage, disconnect the VPN, and retry |
0x80070057 or 0x80080005 |
Corruption, permissions, or configuration issue | Run SFC from an elevated Command Prompt and run the troubleshooter |
0xC1900101 |
Incompatible driver | Update or uninstall suspect network/display drivers and try a clean boot |
0x80248014 |
Windows Update database or service problem | Run the troubleshooter and ensure the service is started |
0x80070005 |
Access denied or insufficient permissions | Use an administrator account and check security software |
0x80070002 or 0x80070003 |
Update failed | Restart, run the troubleshooter, and check storage |
0x80070422 |
Windows Update service disabled or stopped | Set the service to Automatic, start it, restart, and check again |
The code is a clue, not a guarantee. If several codes appear over multiple attempts, follow the general sequence—troubleshooter, connection and pause checks, storage, service, cache, system files, then drivers—instead of treating each code as an unrelated problem.
Choose the least disruptive fix first
The troubleshooting order is deliberate. Restarting, reconnecting, resuming updates, and running the troubleshooter have the lowest risk to personal data and do not need external storage. Checking storage may require deleting only files you recognize. A cache reset removes downloaded update packages, not your documents, but it makes Windows download them again. SFC changes repaired system components and must be run from an administrator Command Prompt. Driver removal and a clean boot can affect hardware or startup software, so record every change and restore normal startup afterward.

Most steps can be completed on the affected PC. A USB drive is relevant only when the internal disk cannot meet the free-space requirement. If a step requests administrator approval, sign in with an administrator account rather than bypassing the prompt. Do not use a third-party cleaner or driver utility as a substitute for identifying the displayed code and trying Microsoft’s built-in checks first.

- Confirm the network is connected and stable.
- Check that updates are not paused.
- Restart Windows and run the troubleshooter.
- Verify that the Windows Update service is running and set to Automatic.
- Check free storage, especially if the update is an upgrade rather than a small monthly package.
- If the error points to corrupted files, reset the SoftwareDistribution cache and retry.
A 0-percent display can remain unchanged while Windows is preparing or checking prerequisites. Give the process time after confirming the service and connection; interrupting power during an installation can create a second problem.
What to do when installation is stuck at 100 percent
At 100 percent, Windows may still be completing servicing tasks. First wait for normal disk activity to finish, then restart only when Windows offers a restart or the system has clearly stopped responding. After rebooting, check the update history in Settings > Windows Update > Update history and note whether the update installed, failed, or rolled back. Use the displayed code with the table above. Repeated 100-percent failures commonly warrant the cache reset, SFC, or driver checks rather than repeated forced shutdowns.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf Windows says no updates are available
“You’re up to date” does not always mean the computer is eligible for every release. First confirm that updates are not paused, the Windows Update service is running, and the device has a stable connection. Then verify the version with winver. A Windows 10 device checked after October 14, 2025 may simply be outside Microsoft’s free-support lifecycle, while a Windows 11 device may be waiting for a restart or have a local service, storage, or cache problem. Record the message and date shown on the Windows Update page before making changes.
Understand the Windows 10 support cutoff
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft says free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes are no longer provided for Windows 10. Therefore, a Windows 10 PC that no longer receives expected updates may be outside the free-support lifecycle rather than suffering a local cache problem.
Confirm the edition and version with winver. If the hardware supports Windows 11, review Microsoft’s current Windows 11 compatibility and installation guidance. If it does not, continuing to search for a missing Windows 10 security update cannot restore a support channel that has ended; the practical decision is whether to move to supported hardware or another supported operating-system path.
When to stop troubleshooting
Stop and seek installation or recovery guidance if the computer repeatedly reboots, cannot start Windows, loses access to your files, or reports disk errors. Do not repeatedly clear system folders, disable security protection, or force power off during an installation. Keep the error code, update name, Windows version, and the last successful step; those details make further support substantially more targeted.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why am I not getting Windows updates?
Check whether updates are paused, the internet connection is stable, the Windows Update service is running, and enough storage is available. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter, restart, and check again. If the PC runs Windows 10 after October 14, 2025, the end of free support may explain why expected updates are unavailable.
How do I fix Windows Update stuck at 0 percent?
Reconnect to Wi-Fi or Ethernet, resume updates if they are paused, restart, and run the built-in troubleshooter. Verify that Windows Update is set to Automatic and running in services.msc. Check storage, then reset C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution if the error indicates corrupted update files.
What should I do when Windows Update is stuck at 100 percent?
Wait while Windows completes servicing and avoid forced shutdowns. Restart only when Windows offers it or the computer has clearly stopped responding. After signing in, check Update history for the result and error code, then follow the matching cache, SFC, or driver step.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What does Windows Update error 0x80070422 mean?
It usually means the Windows Update service is disabled or stopped. Open services.msc, set Windows Update’s Startup type to Automatic, start or restart the service, restart Windows, and select Check for updates.
What does error 0xC1900101 mean?
It points to an incompatible driver during an upgrade. Disconnect unnecessary hardware, update or uninstall suspect network and display drivers using the manufacturer’s package, restart, and retry. A clean boot can help identify software conflicts.
Will clearing SoftwareDistribution delete my personal files?
The cache reset removes downloaded update packages so Windows can download them again; it does not delete personal documents. Back up important files, stop Windows Update first, and never force-delete files that Windows reports are in use.
How much free space does a Windows upgrade need?
Microsoft lists 16 GB free for a 32-bit upgrade and 20 GB for a 64-bit upgrade. Free space in Settings > System > Storage. If the internal drive is too small, Microsoft says a USB drive can provide optional external storage during the update.
Should I disable antivirus to install an update?
Only use temporary disabling of third-party antivirus or firewall software as a diagnostic test for a blocking error. Test while actively watching the update, then restore protection immediately. It is not a permanent fix.
The Bottom Line
Start with the troubleshooter, then check connection, pause status, storage, and the Windows Update service. Reset the cache, run SFC, or investigate drivers only when the symptom or error code points there. Finally, remember that free Windows 10 updates ended on October 14, 2025.
