“No such interface supported” is a Windows software error commonly paired with 0x80004002. It means the program or Windows component requested an interface that is unavailable, damaged, or incompatible. The correct fix depends on scope: repair the individual app when one app or file type fails; use Windows system-file repairs when Explorer, Settings, or several apps fail; and follow a product-specific update or rollback path for SQL Server Reporting Services or WSL.

What “No Such Interface Supported” means

Windows components communicate through defined interfaces. An app calls one of those interfaces to open a file, display a control, or reach a system service. The message appears when that interface cannot be provided. In ordinary Windows 10 and Windows 11 cases, published troubleshooting guidance associates the error with damaged DLL files, faulty updates, app corruption, or other system-file problems.

The wording is not a diagnosis by itself. The same text has appeared in unrelated product defects, including SQL Server Reporting Services and Windows Subsystem for Linux. The error text alone is also not evidence that your computer contains malware. Record the exact code, the affected app or file type, your Windows edition and build, and any update or installation that preceded the failure before changing anything.

First, determine how wide the failure is

Try to reproduce the problem and classify it before selecting a repair. This avoids resetting an app when the Windows shell is damaged, or running invasive system commands for a single broken file handler.

What fails Most appropriate first branch Why
One app, such as Photos or Media Player Repair, then reset and update that app The fault may be confined to the app package or its stored data.
One file type, such as JPG, MP4 or TXT Repair the app assigned to that file type The handler may be corrupted even when other Windows functions work.
Explorer, Settings, Control Panel and several apps Run elevated SFC and DISM, then consider System Restore Multiple failures point toward shared system files, components or a recent Windows change.
SQL Server Reporting Services report Use the SSRS cumulative-update branch This wording can result from a documented SSRS defect rather than general Windows corruption.
WSL after a Store-version change Check the WSL-specific update or rollback history The WSL issue has its own package and version context.

Note whether the first failure followed a Windows update, an app update, migration to the Store version of WSL, a registry change, or a security-policy change. That timing determines whether repair, update, or rollback is the least disruptive choice.

Fix an app- or file-type-specific error

1. Repair the affected app

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps, then Installed apps.
  3. Find the app that displays the error, select its three-dot menu, and choose Advanced options.
  4. Choose Repair. Windows attempts to repair the app without deleting its stored data.
  5. Reopen the app or the problem file and test again.

The exact labels can vary slightly by Windows release, but the Installed apps and Advanced options path is the current Windows 11 route. If the same app fails for every file, repair it even if only one extension was tested.

2. Reset the app if Repair does not work

Return to the app’s Advanced options page and choose Reset. Resetting reinstalls the app’s local state and removes that app’s data, settings and sign-in state where applicable. Back up anything the app stores locally before selecting it. Test immediately after the reset, before restoring old settings.

3. Update the app

For Microsoft Store apps, open Microsoft Store, select Library, and install available updates. Retry the affected file after the update. An update can replace a damaged package or fix incompatibility introduced by a Windows build.

4. Check the file-handler example

A Microsoft Q&A discussion describes users who could not open JPG, MP4, TXT and other files after Windows 11 version 22H2. The accepted community response suggested repairing or resetting Microsoft Photos, and doing the same for Media Player when it was the failing handler. Treat that as case-specific community guidance, not a universal Microsoft fix. If another app is assigned to the extension, repair that app instead.

Repair Windows system files when failures are broad

Use these commands when several Windows functions fail or app repair has not changed the behavior. They require an elevated terminal, Command Prompt or PowerShell window.

1. Run System File Checker

  1. Open Start and search for Terminal or Command Prompt.
  2. Choose Run as administrator and approve the User Account Control prompt.
  3. Enter SFC /scannow and press Enter.
  4. Wait for verification to reach 100 percent. Do not close the window while it is running.

SFC checks protected Windows files and replaces damaged copies when it can. Read the completion message. If it reports that files were repaired, restart Windows and retest the original action. If it reports that some files could not be repaired, continue with DISM.

2. Check and repair the Windows component store with DISM

Run the following commands in order from the same elevated window:

  1. DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
  2. DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
  3. DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

CheckHealth performs a quick status check, while ScanHealth performs a deeper scan. RestoreHealth repairs the component store that Windows uses to service system files. The final command can take time and may appear to pause. Keep the computer connected to power and do not interrupt it. When DISM finishes, run SFC /scannow again, restart Windows, and test the failing function.

3. Treat DLL re-registration as a technical escalation

Some troubleshooting guides describe re-registering actxprxy.dll and other DLLs as a possible remedy. DLL registration changes system configuration; the available guidance does not establish that a broad set of registration commands is safe or effective for every Windows configuration. Do not paste random DLL commands from an untrusted site. If you use a documented command for your exact Windows version, open an elevated prompt, record the command, and create a restore point first. Stop if registration reports that the module cannot be loaded or the entry point is missing, rather than substituting another file.

Roll back a recent change with System Restore

System Restore is appropriate when the message started immediately after an update, driver or configuration change and the built-in repair commands did not help. It returns system files, installed programs and registry settings to an earlier restore point; it is not a replacement for a current personal-file backup.

  1. Search Windows for create a restore point and open the matching Control Panel result.
  2. On the System Protection tab, select System Restore.
  3. Choose a restore point dated before the first “No such interface supported” failure.
  4. Review the affected programs, then complete the wizard and allow Windows to restart.

Choose the point based on the failure timeline, not simply the oldest available date. If System Restore is unavailable or no suitable point exists, keep the diagnostic information and move to the escalation options below.

Product-specific cases that need a different fix

SQL Server Reporting Services

Microsoft documents a defect in SQL Server Reporting Services 2012 and 2014 reports loaded through an IFRAME. Clicking a parameter drop-down can display “Error : No such interface supported.” Microsoft states that the issue was first fixed in Cumulative Update 13 for SQL Server 2014 and Cumulative Update 10 for SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 2. Install the latest cumulative update for the applicable SQL Server product rather than treating this as a Photos, Explorer or general Windows shell problem. Confirm the server version and service-pack level before selecting an update.

Windows Subsystem for Linux

A Microsoft WSL issue report opened on November 24, 2022 records Windows 10 build 19044.2311 after the Store version of WSL was installed and wsl --update was run. The reproduction showed both “No such interface supported” and “Error code: Wsl/0x80004002.” That report also records that removing the Store package restored the older inbox WSL for that reporter. This is historical issue-report information, not a guarantee that removing the Store package is the right action for current WSL releases. Before changing WSL packages, record your distributions and data, check the current WSL release guidance for your Windows build, and use a supported update or rollback path.

When to escalate

  • System-wide failures remain: If Explorer, Settings and multiple apps still fail after SFC, DISM and a suitable restore point, a Windows repair installation or professional support may be appropriate.
  • The machine is managed: On a work or school PC, security policy, application control or a managed update can cause interface failures. Contact the administrator before changing policy or removing packages.
  • Only a business product fails: Use the vendor’s support and update path for SSRS, WSL or another specialized product, and provide the exact code, build and reproduction steps.
  • Data is at risk: Back up important files before a reset, restore operation or repair installation. App reset removes that app’s local data.

No published prevalence or success-rate statistic establishes one universal fix for this message. The reliable approach is to match the remedy to the failure boundary, the triggering change and the product involved.
