1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe “No response received from server” message in Space Engineers is commonly a dedicated-server timeout, not proof that your internet connection has failed. The documented triggers are a server save that takes too long, world-file compression while a player joins, or a world containing more objects and entities than the server can track promptly.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Space Engineers servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
If you administer the server, back up the world, reduce the heaviest object load, run the hosting panel’s maintenance script, and test another connection. If you are only a player, the practical fix is to give the administrator this timing information and ask them to perform those checks; reinstalling the game or changing graphics settings is not established as a fix for this specific message.

What the message means
A dedicated server must answer a client while it performs background work. When that work takes longer than the connection timeout, the client can report that it received no response even though the server process may still be running. Pingperfect Ltd’s hosting guidance, accessed October 14, 2026, identifies three situations that produce this message:
| Documented trigger | What the server is doing | Typical timing clue | First response |
|---|---|---|---|
| Large save and slow autosave | Writing the dedicated-server save file takes more than a few seconds. | The timeout appears during periodic saving, or several players notice it at the same time. | Back up the world, then reduce unnecessary object load and run the host’s maintenance process. |
| World-file compression for a joining client | Preparing and compressing the world file to send to a new player. | The message appears exactly as someone starts connecting. | Have the administrator check the world size and entity load; retry after the transfer finishes. |
| Too many objects or entities | Tracking a very large collection of grids, blocks, moving parts, weapons, or machines. | Joins, saves, or normal play become slower as the world grows. | Audit and limit the heaviest object categories, then perform maintenance. |
These are workload explanations, not a published diagnosis for every platform or game version. The available guidance does not provide a universal entity limit, timeout value, edition matrix, or official confirmation from Keen Software House. Treat the table as a practical starting point rather than a promise that one category is always responsible.

First decide who can fix it
If you are a regular player
You normally cannot repair a dedicated-server save or run its maintenance script from the game client. Record when the error occurs and send the administrator:
- Whether other players were disconnected at the same time.
- Whether it happened immediately when you selected Join, or after you had already been playing.
- Whether an autosave notification or a noticeable pause occurred just before the disconnect.
- The approximate date and time, your world or server name, and whether repeated attempts produce the same result.
Ask the administrator to check save duration, joining-player compression, and entity counts. If nobody with server-panel or file access is available, the host is the correct escalation point. A client can retry once the server finishes its work, but repeated retries will not remove an overloaded object population.

If you own or administer the server
Use the sequence below. Do not delete files or run cleanup commands before making a restorable backup. Hosting panels differ, so use the exact maintenance action exposed by your provider rather than guessing at a command or editing the save directory manually.
Use the timing to narrow the cause
- Ask when the timeout occurs. A failure coinciding with a new player’s connection points toward world-file compression. A failure that follows the server’s regular save interval points toward a slow autosave.
- Check whether the issue is shared. If multiple players lose the connection together, a server-side pause is more plausible than one player’s local connection. If only one player is affected, still check the server first when the failure happens during join, because compression can be triggered by that player’s connection.
- Look for growth over time. A world that worked when small but now times out as it accumulates machinery and grids fits the documented entity-tracking cause.
- Back up before changing the world. Keep the backup outside the live save location if possible, and label it with the date and world name so you can restore the pre-maintenance state.
- Change one broad factor at a time. First run the panel maintenance process, then retest. If the problem remains, reduce the heaviest object categories in a controlled session and retest again. This makes it possible to identify whether workload, rather than an unrelated change, affected the result.
Cause 1: an autosave that takes too long
The server periodically writes the world to its save file. A large or complex world can make that operation last long enough that clients receive no response for several seconds. The guidance describes this as a dedicated-server save file whose autosave takes more than a few seconds; it does not state a universal file-size threshold or a guaranteed safe save duration.

How to confirm the pattern
- Compare the time of the disconnect with the server’s configured or observed autosave interval.
- Ask players whether everyone saw a pause or disconnect simultaneously.
- Check the hosting panel’s console or event log for save messages, if the panel exposes them. Do not infer a numeric limit when the panel does not display one.
- Compare a quiet period with a busy period. A failure that appears only when many grids or machines are active is consistent with additional save workload.
What to do
- Stop or pause the server through the host’s normal control so the backup represents a consistent world state.
- Create and verify a backup before maintenance. A backup that cannot be restored is not a safety net, so confirm that the archive exists and contains the expected world files using the provider’s documented method.
- Run the hosting panel’s maintenance script or maintenance process. The source guidance recommends doing this regularly but does not define a single script name or list of operations; follow your provider’s current panel instructions.
- Reduce unnecessary heavy objects as described in the entity section below, then allow at least one normal autosave and observe whether the timeout returns.
- Tell players when maintenance will occur. A controlled test with one player joining is easier to interpret than an unannounced change during a busy session.
Do not claim that changing graphics quality, reinstalling the client, or buying more bandwidth fixes a server save that is blocking responses. Those actions are not established by the available guidance for this message.
Cause 2: world-file compression during a join
When a new player connects, the dedicated server may compress the world file for transfer. Pingperfect’s guidance identifies this operation as a second documented moment when the “no response” message can appear, specifically right as someone starts to connect.

Recognizing a join-time compression pause
- The existing players remain in the world or notice a brief stall at the exact moment a newcomer selects the server.
- The newcomer receives the timeout before loading into the world, while later attempts may succeed without any world edit.
- Several join attempts fail while the server is busy, then work after the compression operation completes.
Reducing the chance of a failed join
- Ask the administrator to make a backup and run the host maintenance process before testing again.
- Reduce unnecessary grids and high-load machines, especially if the world has grown substantially.
- Schedule the test when no other player is joining or leaving, so a single compression event is not competing with several simultaneous connections.
- Have one player retry after the server has had time to finish its current operation. Repeated rapid retries add connection attempts without reducing the amount of data the server must prepare.
The evidence does not establish a client-side setting that bypasses compression or a fixed maximum world size. If join failures continue after maintenance and object reduction, provide the host with the exact join time and ask them to inspect server-side logs and save handling.
Cause 3: too many entities and machines
Every additional grid, moving component, weapon, and machine can increase the amount of state the server must track and save. The documented examples are drills, turrets, grinders, refineries, pistons, rotors, and rocket launchers. The recommendation is to limit the number of these objects available to players rather than allowing an unrestricted accumulation.

Prioritize the heaviest categories
| Object category named in the guidance | Audit questions | Practical limit-setting approach |
|---|---|---|
| Drills | Are abandoned mining rigs, temporary ships, or duplicate drills still present? | Remove or restrict unused rigs and keep only the number the server population needs. |
| Turrets | Are defensive arrays duplicated across inactive bases or parked ships? | Consolidate redundant defenses and limit new installations where possible. |
| Grinders | Are grinders left running or attached to disposable construction platforms? | Retire unused grinder arrays and avoid permanent duplicates. |
| Refineries | Do bases contain more refineries than their active production requires? | Share or consolidate production instead of retaining idle copies. |
| Pistons and rotors | Are there old doors, elevators, cranes, or decorative mechanisms no longer used? | Remove obsolete mechanisms and simplify moving assemblies before adding new ones. |
| Rocket launchers | Are launchers stored on abandoned ships or test platforms? | Delete unused weapon platforms and restrict accumulation of spare launchers. |
This table is a prioritization aid, not a claim that every item has the same cost or that all other blocks are harmless. The source names these categories as examples of load-heavy objects; inspect the rest of the world as well, including abandoned grids and duplicated machinery.
A safe entity-reduction workflow
- Announce a maintenance window and ask players to leave critical ships and stations in a known state.
- Back up the world and record the backup location.
- Make an inventory of inactive grids and the seven named object categories. Preserve anything players have explicitly marked as active or important.
- Remove or consolidate one group of clearly abandoned objects at a time. Avoid broad deletion that could destroy a player’s working base.
- Run the host maintenance process after the cleanup, then start the server and test a join and an autosave.
- Keep a short change log listing what was removed and when. If the result is worse, restore the backup rather than guessing which files to replace.
Running maintenance without risking the world
The documented recommendation is to run the maintenance script in the game panel regularly and to make a world backup first. Because panel names and script behavior vary by host, the reliable procedure is a control-panel workflow rather than a universal command:
- Open the game-server panel. Sign in with an account that has server-management permissions.
- Stop or suspend the server using the panel’s normal control. Wait for the panel to show that the process has stopped; do not assume a closed browser tab stopped it.
- Create a dated world backup. Include the server name and UTC date in the label, and verify that the panel reports completion.
- Locate the maintenance action. It may be under tools, scheduled tasks, scripts, or maintenance. Select the provider’s documented Space Engineers maintenance process; do not substitute a script intended for a different game or server type.
- Run the process and read its completion status. If it reports an error, save the text for the host instead of repeatedly launching it.
- Start the server and test in a controlled order. First wait for startup, then have one player join, then observe the next autosave. Add more players only after those checks succeed.
- Schedule regular maintenance. The source recommends regular runs, but gives no universal interval. Choose an interval appropriate to how quickly your world accumulates entities and adjust it when the workload changes.
A maintenance process is not a substitute for controlling growth. If the same categories of objects are recreated without limits, the timeout can return even after a successful run.
When the problem is probably not fixed by client changes
Players often consider reinstalling the game, changing graphics settings, replacing networking hardware, or purchasing a faster connection. None of those actions is established in the available guidance as a remedy for this exact message. They may be relevant to a separate local connection problem, but the documented triggers here occur while the dedicated server is saving, compressing, or tracking entities.
Use a simple distinction:
- Server-wide timing: several players disconnect together, or the failure always coincides with a save or another player joining. Escalate server workload and maintenance.
- One-player-only timing: only one client fails while others join normally, and the failure does not align with save or join activity. Give the host the comparison details; the available source does not establish a specific client fix.
- Persistent failure for everyone: stop making repeated world edits, preserve a backup, and ask the host to inspect the server process and logs. The supplied guidance does not provide enough evidence to diagnose a crashed process, authentication problem, or network-path fault.
Prevention checklist for administrators
- Keep a recoverable backup before every maintenance or large cleanup.
- Run the hosting panel’s maintenance process regularly, following the provider’s current instructions.
- Set expectations with players about maintenance windows and test joins.
- Limit drills, turrets, grinders, refineries, pistons, rotors, rocket launchers, and similar high-load objects.
- Remove abandoned grids and duplicate machinery before the world becomes difficult to save or transfer.
- Monitor whether timeouts cluster around autosaves or new-player connections.
- Record object reductions and maintenance dates so a later regression can be traced.
- Do not advertise an invented “safe” entity count; no universal number is provided by the documented source.
Decision table: what to do next
| Your observation | Most useful next step | Who performs it |
|---|---|---|
| Timeout occurs as a player begins joining. | Back up the world, run maintenance, reduce heavy objects, and retry one join. | Server administrator or host. |
| Everyone disconnects around an autosave. | Compare save timing, maintain the world, and reduce entity load. | Server administrator or host. |
| World has accumulated many machines and abandoned grids. | Audit the named categories, remove inactive equipment carefully, then maintain. | Server administrator with player coordination. |
| Only one player fails while others connect normally. | Report exact timing and comparison results; do not assume a reinstall is the fix. | Player reports; host investigates server context. |
| Failure remains after maintenance and cleanup. | Preserve the backup and provide the host with timestamps and panel errors for deeper server inspection. | Host or administrator. |
What is and is not established
The specific causes and mitigation above come from Pingperfect Ltd’s hosting guidance, accessed October 14, 2026. That source does not state a publication year, game-version scope, platform matrix, performance benchmark, numeric object limit, or official Keen Software House confirmation. Accordingly, this guide uses workload-based symptoms and reversible maintenance steps rather than promising a particular threshold or universal fix.
