If an AAC file plays in OBS but your YouTube playlist is silent, first find where the sound disappears: check the OBS mixer meter, make a short local recording, then compare it with the stream. A moving meter points toward routing or output-track settings; no meter activity points first toward source playback or file compatibility. AAC is listed as supported by OBS Media Source, but that does not guarantee every AAC stream and container behaves identically.
Find where the audio disappears
Test one known-good AAC file before troubleshooting the whole playlist. This separates a problem with the media item from one involving playlist playback or stream output.

- Play the file in OBS and watch the audio mixer. Note whether its meter moves.
- Make a brief local recording and play it in a media player.
- Compare that recording with the YouTube output, if the stream is already live.
| What you observe | Where to investigate next |
|---|---|
| No mixer activity and silent local recording | Source playback, source selection, and the file’s actual format or container. |
| Mixer activity and sound in local recording, but silence on YouTube | OBS output routing and whether the source is assigned to the audio track used by the stream. |
| Mixer activity but silent local recording | Check recording and output-track configuration; meter activity alone does not prove audio is reaching the recorded or streamed output. |
These checks isolate the stage of failure; they do not identify a cause by themselves. OBS versions and configurations can expose different routing controls.
Check the OBS source and VLC setup
For a playlist: inspect VLC Video Source
OBS documents VLC Video Source as the playlist-capable source, backed by VLC libraries. VLC must be installed, and the OBS documentation specifies 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS. If VLC Video Source is missing, confirm VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS. See OBS’s Media Sources documentation.

For a single file: inspect Media Source
OBS Media Source lists .aac among supported audio types. It is intended for media-file playback rather than a multi-item VLC playlist. In the source properties, confirm the correct file is selected and check the relevant controls: Local File, Loop, Restart playback when source becomes active, and Close file when inactive. Make sure the source is active in the scene; scene visibility and inactive-source behavior can affect playback.
If the mixer moves, check audio routing
A moving source meter indicates that OBS is receiving audio from that source, so focus on where OBS sends it. Confirm the source is assigned to the audio track selected for the YouTube stream. Then make another short local recording and inspect it before changing multiple settings at once.

- If the local recording has sound but YouTube does not, concentrate on the stream’s selected audio track and output configuration.
- If neither the recording nor YouTube has sound, revisit source playback and media compatibility.
A 2025 OBS Project GitHub issue describes a user case in which VLC Video Source audio was audible locally and the mixer responded, but live output lacked sound after an OBS update. It is an anecdotal report, not evidence of a general or current defect.

Check the AAC file’s actual format and container
The .aac extension alone does not establish all the details OBS needs to read the media. OBS’s Audio/Video Formats Guide documents AAC across multiple container combinations and describes it as widely supported. If the file plays elsewhere but not in OBS, determine whether it is a raw AAC stream or AAC inside a container.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
As a reversible test, make a copy and try the audio in another compatible container; keep the original unchanged. One OBS Project issue report says a user resolved a looping problem with a .aac file by remuxing it to M4A or audio-only MP4. That report is not a guaranteed fix, but it makes remuxing a reasonable test when the evidence points to a container issue.
Keep YouTube’s HLS requirements in context
YouTube’s HLS setup guidance lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3 as audio codecs, with a sample rate of 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1 surround. Those values apply to YouTube’s HLS ingestion instructions; they do not explain every silent OBS playlist or apply universally to every YouTube streaming protocol.

Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Checks and next step |
|---|---|
| VLC Video Source does not appear | Install VLC and check that its architecture matches OBS; OBS documents 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. |
| One AAC file is silent in OBS | Check that the right file is selected and the source is active. Compare its mixer meter and a local recording, then inspect the actual stream and container if both are silent. |
| One item in the playlist is silent | Test that item by itself in a compatible source. If other playlist items work, investigate that file’s playback and container rather than assuming the whole playlist is misrouted. |
| Meter moves, but the YouTube stream is silent | Check the source’s assignment to the audio track used by the stream and compare with a local recording. |
| The problem began after an OBS or VLC update | Record the installed versions and repeat the meter, local-recording, and stream checks. A reported symptom after an update is not proof that the update caused your issue. |
If these checks do not isolate the cause, the useful details to collect are your operating system, OBS and VLC versions, source type, mixer-meter behavior, local-recording result, and the file’s codec and container. Without them, there is no reliable single diagnosis.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep prerecorded video looping on YouTube rather than troubleshoot a local OBS playlist, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; if YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically tries to recover it. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for prerecorded video streams to YouTube, not camera livestreaming.
