A Nintendo Switch eShop download that will not start, stops progressing, or becomes very slow is usually caused by an interrupted internet connection, software still running, insufficient storage, sleep-mode settings, an account-ownership issue, or a specific error code. Work through the reversible fixes in this order: test the connection, close active software, refresh the download, restart the console, and check available storage.
Do not format the console or remove the microSD card as a first step. Those actions do not solve a failed connection or an eShop-account problem and can create additional recovery work.

Start with this five-minute fix
- Test the internet connection. From HOME, open System Settings, choose Internet, and select Test Connection. If the test fails, resolve the network problem before changing storage or buying accessories.
- Close the game or application. Save your progress, return to HOME, highlight the software, press X, and confirm Close. Some games pause downloads while they are running, particularly when online features are active.
- Refresh the download. Select the user-page icon from HOME, open User Settings, and choose Update Download Progress.
- Restart the Switch if progress still does not move. Hold the POWER button, open Power Options, select Restart, allow the console to reconnect to the internet, and leave the affected software closed.
- Check free space. In System Settings, open Data Management and inspect both system memory and the inserted microSD card. Software and updates need available space, and an update can require more room than the original installation.
This sequence addresses the most common causes without deleting your games or save data. If a numbered error code appears at any point, skip to the code-specific section below rather than repeating generic steps.

Confirm that the Switch is actually online
A download can appear frozen when the console has lost its connection or is repeatedly trying to reconnect. Run System Settings > Internet > Test Connection and wait for the result. If the test reports a failure, check that the router has internet access, that other devices can reach the internet, and that the Switch is connected to the intended wireless network. Correct the connection first; changing storage cannot repair a network outage.

Download time depends on the internet service, wireless conditions, network congestion, and the size of the game or update. There is no reliable universal completion time, so treat a slowly increasing progress indicator differently from a percentage that remains unchanged after the connection test succeeds.
Stop software that can pause the transfer
Some Nintendo Switch software pauses eShop downloads while it is being played. This is especially likely when the game is using online features. Save, return to HOME, highlight the running title, press X, and confirm Close. Do not merely suspend the game; leave it closed while the download catches up.
Use Update Download Progress
The refresh command asks the system to check the pending transfer again without deleting the purchase. From HOME, select the user-page icon, open User Settings, and select Update Download Progress. Keep the console on HOME or in sleep mode after starting the refresh so another application does not interrupt it.

If the refresh does not change the status, restart rather than repeatedly pausing and resuming the item. Hold POWER, choose Power Options, then Restart. After startup, wait for the internet connection to return before opening a game. A restart clears a temporary system state; it does not remove installed software or save data.

Check storage before trying hardware fixes
Where to see available space
Open System Settings > Data Management. Review free space in system memory and on the inserted microSD card, because the Switch may use either location for downloaded software. If the destination is nearly full, remove only content you no longer need or move eligible software through the console’s data-management tools. Keep in mind that save data remains in system memory even when the game itself is stored on a microSD card.
Why an update can need more room
An update may require temporary working space in addition to the installed game. Consequently, a title that fit when first downloaded can fail to update after the storage has filled. Leave more free space than the displayed update size when possible, then retry the download from the HOME Menu.
When a microSD card is relevant
A card is a storage solution only when the console lacks sufficient space or the existing card is unsuitable. It will not fix a failed internet connection, an eShop account that does not own the software, or a game that is pausing transfers while it runs.
| Specification | Nintendo Switch guidance | What it means for troubleshooting |
|---|---|---|
| Supported capacity | 64 GB to 2 TB for Nintendo Switch microSD cards; Nintendo Support Japan does not state a publication year for this figure. | Choose capacity based on the amount of software you keep installed. A larger card does not improve a broken network connection. |
| Recommended card type | UHS-I microSD cards. | Use the card class Nintendo identifies for Switch rather than assuming every high-capacity card is equivalent. |
| Read-speed guidance | 60–95 MB/s recommended read-speed range, according to Nintendo Support Japan; the source does not state a year. | This is a performance guide for Switch storage, not an internet-download speed guarantee. |
| Save data location | Save data remains in system memory. | Replacing or expanding a card does not move your saves off the console’s system memory. |
Nintendo Switch 2 has different storage-card requirements. Do not apply the Switch figures in the table to Switch 2; identify the console generation before purchasing a card. If a card is involved in the failure, first confirm that the console recognizes it in System Settings > Data Management and that the card has free space. The general first-line guidance does not establish formatting or removing the card as a universal fix, so do not take those steps before the connection, software, refresh, restart, and storage checks.

Downloads that should continue in sleep mode
A Switch can download while asleep only when its prerequisites are satisfied. It needs internet access, enough available storage, and current system software. Nintendo also recommends checking for the latest system update when sleep-mode downloads fail.
Wireless connection
Keep the console within a reasonable range of the wireless router and avoid placing it where walls, metal cabinets, or other radio interference weaken the signal. Confirm the connection with the console’s internet test before putting it to sleep. If the connection drops while asleep, the download may remain paused until the system reconnects.
Wired connection
A wired setup can be an alternative when testing shows that Wi-Fi is unreliable. Depending on the Switch model and dock, it may require a compatible LAN adapter and an Ethernet cable. Wired networking is an optional response to a demonstrated wireless problem, not a prerequisite for ordinary eShop downloads.

Check the sleep setting
In System Settings, open Sleep Mode and verify that the option to maintain an internet connection while asleep is enabled. Exact menu wording can vary slightly by system software version, but the setting must allow networking during sleep. After changing it, start the download while awake, confirm that it has begun, and then put the console to sleep.

If sleep downloads still fail
Download while the console remains awake. This separates a sleep-mode configuration problem from a broader connection or storage problem. If the transfer works awake but not asleep, recheck the internet-maintenance setting, system update status, router range, and available space before considering any hardware change.
What to do when an error code appears
A code-specific message is more useful than a generic symptom. Record the complete code, including every digit and letter, and use Nintendo Support’s search for that exact code. Follow the instructions on the matching support page, because different codes can indicate different causes such as account authorization, network configuration, software data, or service availability.
Do not substitute a generic fix for a code-specific instruction. For example, adding storage will not resolve an authorization error, and changing Wi-Fi settings will not repair a purchase that belongs to another Nintendo Account. If the code-specific page asks for a step that could delete data or initialize the console, read its warnings carefully and confirm that less destructive options have been exhausted.

If the problem occurs while reinstalling a game or other purchased software, verify ownership before troubleshooting the transfer itself. The Nintendo Account that made the purchase must be linked to the user on the Switch. Purchases are managed by that account, not simply by the console or the user profile’s name.

- Multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options (additional Joy-Con sold separately)
- Slip a set of Joy-Con into a Joy-Con grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
Check the linked account
Open the user page from HOME and review the account information for the user attempting the redownload. If the purchasing Nintendo Account is not linked to that user, sign in with the account that owns the software or use the console user associated with it. A different account can browse the eShop but cannot necessarily redownload another account’s purchases.
Confirm that redownload distribution remains available
A purchase may not be available for redownload if distribution of that software has ended. If the title is absent from the account’s redownload list, check Nintendo’s current availability information for that product rather than repeatedly refreshing the download.
Separate purchase requirements from transfer failures
Nintendo’s eShop requirements include an internet connection, a Nintendo Account linked to the console user, and a payment method or account balance for transactions. These requirements matter when buying software. For a title you already own, the key checks are the owning account, the title’s redownload availability, the internet connection, and storage.
Wireless versus wired: choosing the right response
| Observed situation | Most appropriate next action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The Switch’s connection test fails. | Repair the existing internet or router connection first. | A new storage card cannot correct a failed network path. |
| Wi-Fi works, but the download repeatedly loses connection in the console’s usual location. | Move the console closer to the router or investigate a wired connection. | Distance and interference can affect wireless stability. |
| Wi-Fi is unreliable and the model supports a docked wired setup. | Consider a compatible LAN adapter and Ethernet cable. | Nintendo lists wired networking as an option; specific hardware depends on the console and dock. |
| The connection test succeeds and the card or system memory is full. | Free space or use a compatible Nintendo Switch microSD card. | The limiting resource is storage, not connectivity. |
| The download pauses only while a particular game is open. | Close that software before restarting the download. | Some software pauses transfers during play. |
There is no reason to buy networking hardware solely because one eShop transfer is slow. Establish that the wireless connection is the problem through testing and repeatable behavior first.
Symptoms and the next branch to take
| Symptom | Check first | Then do this |
|---|---|---|
| Download does not begin. | Internet test and account ownership. | Close active software, use Update Download Progress, then restart if necessary. |
| Progress percentage remains unchanged. | Whether a game is running and whether the connection is stable. | Close the game and refresh the download; avoid opening software while it reconnects. |
| Download is moving but very slowly. | Connection-test result and wireless conditions. | Improve the connection or use a wired option only if testing shows Wi-Fi is the limiting factor. |
| Download works awake but stops in sleep mode. | Internet-maintenance setting, system update, router range, and storage. | Enable the sleep-mode internet setting or leave the console awake. |
| Redownload is missing or unavailable. | Linked purchasing Nintendo Account and distribution status. | Use the owning account and verify that Nintendo still offers the title for redownload. |
| A numbered error is displayed. | The complete code. | Use Nintendo’s exact code-specific support instructions. |
Preventing another interrupted eShop download
- Run an internet connection test before starting a large download if your network has been unreliable.
- Close games and other software before starting the transfer, especially titles that use online services.
- Check available system-memory and microSD space before purchasing or updating a large title.
- Install the latest Switch system update when sleep-mode downloads are not behaving normally.
- Keep the console within reliable wireless range, or use a wired docked connection when testing shows Wi-Fi instability.
- For redownloads, use the Nintendo Account that originally purchased the software.
- Write down any error code immediately so you can follow the matching support procedure instead of guessing.
Fixes to avoid as first-line troubleshooting
Do not initialize the console, format storage, or remove the microSD card simply because an eShop download is slow or paused. Those actions are not established as universal remedies for the causes covered here and can introduce data-management risks. First complete the connection test, close active software, refresh the download, restart, inspect storage, verify sleep settings, and check account ownership. Escalate to the exact Nintendo error-code guidance when a code is displayed.
Bottom line
Most stuck Nintendo Switch eShop downloads can be isolated without deleting anything: establish a working internet connection, close software that can pause transfers, select Update Download Progress, restart the console, and make sure the destination has enough space. Treat sleep mode, account ownership, storage compatibility, and error codes as separate branches. A microSD card or LAN adapter is useful only when testing demonstrates the corresponding storage or wireless problem.
