If Nintendo DS games look too wide, too tall, or out of alignment on a foldable phone, the usual cause is the emulator’s display layout rather than the game itself. Open the emulator’s video or screen-layout settings, choose a vertical dual-screen arrangement for the tall inner display, turn off any stretch-to-fill option, and use its layout editor to resize and position both screens. Then check the layout again after moving between the cover and inner displays.
The instructions below assume you are emulating DS software on an Android foldable. Separate sections cover a Nintendo 3DS running DS or DSi software and an original DS or DS Lite, because their fixes are different.

First identify what is actually misaligned
“Stretched” and “misaligned” can describe several unrelated problems. Identify the symptom before changing settings; otherwise you may recalibrate hardware when the emulator only needs a different aspect ratio.

The rest of this guide starts with the foldable-emulator case because that is the situation most closely described by a stretched image on a tall, flexible display.

Fix stretched graphics in an Android foldable emulator
1. Open the emulator’s screen-layout controls
Pause the game and open the emulator’s settings. Look for a section named something like Screen layout, Display, Video, Overlay, or Aspect ratio. The exact labels and menu path depend on the emulator and its current version, so do not assume that a setting shown in another app will use the same name on your device.
You are looking for controls that determine the relationship between the two DS screens and the phone’s available display area. A Google Play listing for one DS emulator documents vertical dual-screen, side-by-side, single-focus, and custom-aspect-ratio layouts. Those examples demonstrate the kinds of controls an emulator may provide; they do not establish that every emulator includes them or that its behavior is identical.
2. Choose a vertical dual-screen arrangement
On the tall inner display, start with a vertical dual-screen layout. The DS hardware places its two screens one above the other, so this arrangement generally uses the foldable’s portrait-like interior area more naturally than a horizontal layout.

- Choose Vertical dual-screen, Stacked, or the closest equivalent.
- Return to the game and check whether the top and bottom screens are distinct, in the correct order, and no longer forced into a wide rectangle.
If the emulator offers only side-by-side, use it temporarily to confirm that the two screens render independently, then look for a custom layout or orientation setting. Do not stretch a side-by-side arrangement simply to fill the inner panel; that changes the game’s geometry.
3. Turn off stretch-to-fill behavior
Find a control with wording such as Stretch screens, Stretch to fill, Fill available area, Force aspect ratio, or Ignore aspect ratio. Disable the option that expands each DS screen until it reaches the edges of the foldable display.

When an emulator preserves the original proportions, unused space may remain around one or both screens. That empty space is preferable to distorted circles, text, and 3D models. If the app instead offers a positive Keep aspect ratio switch, enable that and leave any independent stretch switch disabled.
4. Use the layout editor to resize and position each screen
Many emulators include a layout editor with draggable screen rectangles, size handles, margins, or numeric scale controls. Use it after selecting the basic vertical arrangement.
- Open the layout editor while the phone is fully unfolded.
- Select the upper-screen rectangle and reduce its width or height until the image is proportional and fully visible.
- Select the lower-screen rectangle and apply the same proportional adjustment unless you intentionally want a different size.
- Place the screens in a clear vertical stack with enough separation that the hinge area, cutouts, or navigation controls do not cover game content.
- Check the touch overlay, if the editor displays one. Its interactive regions must remain over the corresponding lower-screen controls.
- Save the arrangement as the emulator’s current custom layout or profile.
Do not use the editor to compensate for a wrong display state by making one screen extremely narrow and the other extremely wide. Both screens can be resized for comfort, but each should retain a consistent image proportion.
5. Test without changing several variables at once
Load a game with clear straight lines, circular icons, or readable text. Change one setting, return to the game, and inspect the result before changing another. This makes it possible to identify whether the problem came from the basic arrangement, aspect-ratio preservation, or a custom position.
- If the image is still distorted, revisit the aspect-ratio or stretch control.
- If the image is proportional but clipped, reduce the screen size or increase the layout margins.
- If the screens are correctly sized but swapped, use the editor’s screen-order control or reset the layout and select the correct dual-screen preset.
- If only touch targets are offset, adjust the touch overlay or recalibrate the emulator’s on-screen controls rather than enlarging the game image.
Recheck the layout when the foldable changes state
A foldable can expose a cover display when closed, an inner display when fully open, and an intermediate partially folded state. A layout that fits one of those surfaces may be unsuitable for another. Samsung’s foldable-app guidance describes supporting open, closed, and partially folded states and moving between cover and main displays with continuity. That is general application-design guidance, not a guarantee that a particular DS emulator automatically handles every transition.

When switching from the cover display to the inner display
- Open the phone and wait for the emulator to redraw.
- Confirm that the emulator is using the intended vertical dual-screen profile rather than a narrow cover-screen profile.
- If either screen is stretched, clipped, or displaced, reopen the layout controls and reapply the saved arrangement.
- Play a few seconds and test both the upper display and lower touch area before continuing.
When switching back to the cover display
The outer display may be too narrow for the inner-screen arrangement. If the emulator supports separate profiles, assign a compact layout to the cover screen and keep the vertical custom layout for the inner panel. If it does not support separate profiles, manually reconfigure the layout after the transition. A temporary black border is normal when preserving proportions; forced stretching is not required.

Partially folded use can move content away from the crease or change the available width. Treat this as a separate layout state. Place both game screens where they remain visible and keep the lower-screen touch area away from the hinge or any physical controls. If the emulator does not recognize the state reliably, close and reopen its layout editor after the fold angle changes.
What to do when the emulator’s menu does not match
There is no universal button-by-button path because the exact emulator, phone model, operating-system version, and current app build were not specified. Use the function of the setting rather than an assumed label.

If none of these functions exists, the emulator may not support independent screen placement. In that case, choose the closest built-in dual-screen mode, preserve the aspect ratio if possible, and avoid claiming that a device-level display setting will correct the app’s internal rendering.
If you are using a Nintendo 3DS instead of an Android foldable
The Android-emulator steps do not apply to a physical Nintendo 3DS. Nintendo documents a separate method for loading DS and DSi software in its original resolution: Press and hold START or SELECT when loading the game from the HOME Menu.

- Return to the Nintendo 3DS HOME Menu.
- Highlight the DS or DSi title.
- Press and hold START or SELECT while loading the game.
- Keep the button held through the launch process until the software appears.
This changes the 3DS presentation mode; it does not repair an Android emulator overlay and should not be used as a substitute for editing a foldable phone’s layout.

Original hardware cannot have its game image stretched by an emulator setting. If the graphics are correctly shaped but your taps land beside the intended control, Nintendo recommends touch-screen recalibration.
Calibrate the touch screen with a stylus
- Open the system settings on the DS or DS Lite.
- Choose the touch-screen calibration option.
- Follow the on-screen targets and touch each one precisely with the stylus.
- Test the lower screen in a game after calibration completes.
Nintendo specifies using a stylus for calibration. An unlicensed screen protector can reduce touch sensitivity, so remove or replace a problematic protector before concluding that the digitizer itself has failed. Calibration corrects input registration; it does not change the physical size or aspect ratio of the game image.
A dimmer lower screen is usually a different issue
Nintendo explains that the DS lower screen can appear slightly less bright because it includes an additional touch-sensitive layer. Viewing it directly rather than at an angle can make the image look clearer. A darker lower screen, by itself, is therefore a visibility difference rather than evidence that the screen has been stretched, resized, or misaligned.

Settings worth comparing when choosing or troubleshooting an emulator
If you are evaluating more than one emulator, compare capabilities rather than app names. The useful questions are whether the program can preserve proportions, arrange both screens vertically, resize and reposition them, and recover after the phone changes fold state.

A feature listing is evidence that a control exists in that particular listing, not a performance test or recommendation. Confirm the behavior in the emulator you actually use.
Troubleshooting by symptom
Both screens are stretched after every launch
Reset the custom layout, select the vertical dual-screen preset again, and disable any fill or stretch option. Save the layout only after checking the fully unfolded display. If the emulator has per-game settings, verify that the affected title is not loading an older profile.
The image is correct until the phone is folded
Open the layout editor after the transition and apply the profile intended for that display. If no profile system exists, create the arrangement again for the new state. The foldable’s display change can alter available dimensions even when the game itself has not changed.
The screens are the right shape but one is partly hidden
Reduce the scale in the layout editor and move the screen away from the hinge, camera cutout, or system navigation area. Do not enable stretch-to-fill to recover pixels; clipping and stretching are separate problems.
Only touch controls are offset
Leave the rendered screen size alone and adjust the emulator’s touch overlay or input layout. If the offset occurs on original DS hardware, use the stylus-based calibration procedure instead. A physical stylus or Bluetooth controller can change how you provide input, but neither changes the emulator’s rendering geometry.
The lower screen looks darker but taps work
View it straight on and compare the image under consistent lighting. The DS touch layer can make the lower screen appear slightly less bright. Do not recalibrate solely because of this brightness difference.
What accessories can and cannot fix
A stylus supplies touch input, and a Bluetooth controller can make buttons more comfortable to use. Neither corrects a stretched emulator image. A screen protector can affect touch sensitivity on original DS hardware, but it does not change an emulator’s aspect ratio. The corrective action for rendered geometry remains the emulator’s layout and scaling configuration.
