- Buffering or a stream that will not start: the game is authorized, but the app, device, or connection is failing to deliver it smoothly.
- An unavailable game or blackout: broadcast rights, your market, subscription, or device rules prevent the service from showing that game.
- A location or playback-area error: the service cannot verify where you are currently watching.
A blackout message is not proof that your Wi-Fi is broken. Likewise, a Sunday Ticket location warning is not fixed by repeatedly clearing an app cache or changing DNS settings. First identify the game, the service entitled to carry it in your market, and the device you are using; then apply the matching fix below.

Start by identifying the failure
Look at the exact message and compare what happens on another supported device. This quick classification prevents you from spending an hour troubleshooting a rights restriction as if it were a network fault.

Do not infer a technical failure from one symptom alone. For example, a phone can play an NFL+ game while a connected TV correctly refuses it because the mobile subscription does not include that TV playback path.

Confirm who is allowed to carry the game
Rights vary by kickoff window, season, and local market. Before restarting a router, check the NFL’s current Ways to Watch and local-availability information, then compare it with the service’s own listing for the specific game. The NFL’s August 25, 2025 guide describes the usual assignments for that season: CBS and FOX for local Sunday-afternoon games, NBC for Sunday Night Football, ESPN and ABC for Monday Night Football, and Amazon Prime Video for Thursday Night Football and the Black Friday game. Those assignments are not a permanent list for every future season, so verify the current listing for the date you are watching.
The key distinction is local versus out-of-market. NFL+ carries live local and nationally televised games on phones and tablets. It does not make out-of-market Sunday-afternoon games available live; those require NFL Sunday Ticket. A subscription cannot override the league’s rights map.
NFL support states that availability is subject to broadcast rights and blackout restrictions. Its NFL+ policy defines a local game as one available on television in your local market and directs fans to check availability by entering a ZIP code. NFL+ is offered in the United States but, under that policy, is not available in U.S. territories. If the ZIP-code result says a game is unavailable, changing Wi-Fi bands, reinstalling the app, or buying a faster cable will not create entitlement.

- Write down the teams, kickoff time, and whether the game is Sunday afternoon, Sunday night, Monday night, Thursday night, or a special broadcast.
- Check the NFL’s current local-availability information for your ZIP code.
- Check the provider’s listing for that exact game, not just the league’s general schedule.
- Determine whether you need a local broadcast, a national network, NFL+, Sunday Ticket, or a participating pay-TV login.
- Confirm that your device is eligible for the type of stream you selected: phone, tablet, web browser, or connected TV.
Fix YouTube TV or Sunday Ticket location errors
Location verification must reflect your real current playback area. Use the same YouTube TV account that purchased Sunday Ticket. Do not use a VPN, GPS spoofing, proxy, or other location-evasion method; those can make verification fail and do not change the underlying broadcast rights.

On a TV or streaming device
- Open the YouTube TV app.
- Select your Profile.
- Open Location.
- Choose Current playback area.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to update and verify the location.
If the app displays a verification prompt, finish it while the device is connected to the network and location you are actually using. A travel situation, a recently changed home internet connection, or a stale playback-area record can all cause a mismatch.
In a web browser
- Go to tv.youtube.com and sign in to the account that owns the subscription.
- Select the profile photo.
- Choose Location, then update Current playback area.
- If the service sends you to tv.youtube.com/verify, allow the browser to access the device’s actual location and complete the prompts.
Browser location permission is separate from being signed in. If permission was previously denied, open the browser’s site-permission controls for YouTube TV, allow location access, reload the page, and repeat the verification flow. On a TV, make sure the app is signed into the purchaser’s account rather than a family member’s account that does not hold Sunday Ticket.
If the wrong game or a package prompt remains
- Sign out and back in with the purchasing account.
- Confirm that the Sunday Ticket purchase appears under that account’s memberships or subscriptions.
- Recheck Current playback area; a verified account can still be using an outdated playback-area setting.
- Check the game’s market status. Sunday Ticket covers out-of-market Sunday-afternoon games, not every NFL game in every location.
- If the account and location are correct but the entitlement is still missing, contact YouTube TV support with the game, device, account email, and exact message.
Understand why NFL+ works on a phone but not a TV
NFL+ live local and primetime regular-season and postseason games are intended for phones and tablets. That mobile entitlement is not automatically a connected-TV entitlement. NFL support also notes that live games through the NFL app on a connected TV may require credentials from a participating pay-TV provider, while NFL Network has its own supported-device availability.
Therefore, a game that plays in the NFL app on a phone but fails on a smart TV can be behaving correctly. The issue may be the subscription’s device rule or missing TV-provider authentication rather than bandwidth.

Check the entitlement in this order
- Identify whether the game is a local or nationally televised game covered by your NFL+ plan.
- Confirm that you are signed into the same NFL account on both devices.
- Check whether the TV app lists the game as available with NFL+ or asks for a participating pay-TV provider.
- If provider credentials are requested, use the login for the provider that carries the game in your market.
- Test the phone on the same home network. If the phone works and the TV does not, focus on device eligibility, app version, and authentication before changing the router.
Troubleshoot buffering on YouTube TV
YouTube TV Help currently recommends updating the latest version of its app and using a minimum internet download speed of 7 Mbps for the best live-streaming experience. This is YouTube TV’s platform guidance, accessed October 13, 2026; it is not a universal NFL requirement and is not a guarantee that reaching 7 Mbps will eliminate stalls.
Use the following sequence so each test tells you something useful.
1. Update and reopen the app
- Install any pending YouTube TV app update on the affected device.
- Close the app completely rather than leaving it suspended in the background.
- Reopen it, select the game again, and watch for several minutes.
An outdated app can fail after a service-side change even when other apps still work.
2. Compare devices and services
Try the same game on a phone or computer, if that device is supported, and try another live stream in the same app. Also check whether unrelated video services play normally. The results separate a device-specific fault from a broader connection or provider issue:

- Only one device fails: concentrate on that device’s app version, operating system, Wi-Fi signal, storage, and date/time settings.
- Every device fails on the same service: check the service’s current support or status guidance and your home network.
- Several services fail: investigate the router, internet connection, or ISP before treating it as an NFL entitlement problem.
- Only one game fails while other channels work: recheck rights, local availability, and the game listing.
3. Test the home network
- Run a download-speed test on the device or a nearby computer. Compare the result with YouTube TV’s 7 Mbps minimum guidance, remembering that shared household traffic can reduce the bandwidth available to the stream.
- Pause large downloads, cloud backups, game updates, and other high-bandwidth streams during the test.
- Move the device closer to the Wi-Fi access point or use the less-congested Wi-Fi band supported by both devices.
- Restart the streaming device and, if appropriate, restart the router according to its manufacturer’s normal procedure.
- On compatible equipment, connect the TV or streaming device by Ethernet as a diagnostic test. A cable can reveal whether Wi-Fi interference is involved, but it cannot fix an ISP outage, service outage, congestion beyond your home, or an entitlement problem. The 7 Mbps recommendation concerns download speed, not a particular cable or accessory.
4. Check the stream after each change
Change one variable at a time and let the stream run long enough to reproduce the symptom. If Ethernet works while Wi-Fi stalls, improve Wi-Fi coverage or continue using the wired connection. If both connections stall on one device but another device is stable, the device or app is the better suspect. If all devices stall while other internet activity is normal, use the affected service’s support channel rather than assuming there is one universal NFL fix.

“Not available” or a missing channel
Return to the rights checklist. Confirm the market, the subscription, the kickoff window, and the provider assigned to that game. A local broadcast can be unavailable through an out-of-market package, while an out-of-market Sunday-afternoon game can be outside NFL+ coverage.

A sign-in or subscription loop
Verify the account first. Sunday Ticket must be attached to the account you are using. For NFL app TV playback that requests a provider login, authenticate with the participating TV provider that carries the game. Signing out, reopening the app, and signing back in can clear a stale session, but it cannot substitute for the required subscription.

A location prompt on a computer
Use the browser flow described above, enable location permission for the verification page, and avoid a VPN or proxy. If the browser cannot determine a location, check the operating system’s location setting and retry from the actual playback area.
What not to do
- Do not assume every blackout is a buffering problem.
- Do not buy a faster internet plan solely because a game is rights-restricted.
- Do not use GPS spoofing or a VPN to bypass a playback-area check.
- Do not treat NFL+ as a replacement for Sunday Ticket; their live-game coverage and device rules differ.
- Do not conclude that a TV is broken because NFL+ works on a phone; check the TV entitlement and provider-authentication requirement first.
- Do not treat 7 Mbps as a guaranteed cure or as an official minimum for every NFL service.
Prepare before kickoff
Rights and app availability can change with the season, so perform this check on game day rather than relying on an old schedule.
- Open the current NFL Ways to Watch or local-availability information and enter your ZIP code where requested.
- Confirm the exact provider and subscription for the game.
- Update the relevant app before kickoff, not during the opening drive.
- Sign into the account that owns the subscription and verify the playback area if using YouTube TV or Sunday Ticket.
- Test the intended device. If you plan to watch on a TV, do not rely only on a successful phone test.
- Run a speed test and pause competing household traffic.
- Keep a second eligible device available for diagnosis, but remember that a different device may have different rights.
When to contact support
Contact the affected service when the game is listed as available, your account and playback area are correct, and the app still fails after the basic tests. Provide the support agent with the teams and kickoff time, your ZIP code or general market, subscription/account type, device model and operating system, app version, connection type (Wi-Fi or Ethernet), exact error text, and whether another device succeeds. This information lets support distinguish a rights or entitlement issue from a device-specific playback fault.
The official NFL and YouTube TV guidance establishes the rights, device, location, and 7 Mbps distinctions above, but it does not provide one universal fix for every ISP, router, app outage, device model, or error code. Follow the current support instructions for the service carrying that particular game.
