How to Fix Netflix Downloads That Won’t Play Offline

If a Netflix download won’t play, first check that you’re signed in and note whether the problem affects one title or every download. Then use the exact error code to choose a fix. Avoid clearing app data or reinstalling until you’re ready to lose saved downloads: those steps remove them and sign you out.

Start with checks that preserve your downloads

  1. Note the details. Record the exact error message or code, your device and operating system, and whether one title or all downloads fail. Netflix recommends searching its Help Center for the exact error; the code often points to a narrower fix than a general app reset. See Netflix’s download troubleshooting guide.
  2. Reconnect temporarily and check your account. Open Netflix while online and confirm you’re signed in to the account that downloaded the title. Netflix says downloaded titles can be watched without an internet connection, but you must be signed in to access them; its connection guidance for downloaded titles recommends remaining signed in before going offline.
  3. Retry offline. Once you’ve confirmed sign-in, disconnect and try the download again. If you had to reconnect for troubleshooting, make sure the account is still signed in before disconnecting.

Netflix’s separate Offline play guidance is for games: it says an internet connection isn’t required after initial download, setup, and login. That game-specific setup sequence should not be treated as a general fix for shows or movies.

Use the error message to choose the fix

Error or message What Netflix says it indicates What to try
iPhone or iPad: “Cannot play title. Please try again later. (-103)” A connectivity issue occurred during the download. Delete the affected title’s download and download it again. Netflix’s -103 instructions.
Android: DLST.N1009 Stored information on the device may need refreshing. Clear Netflix app data only after considering the deletion warning below. Netflix’s DLST.N1009 instructions.
Android: DLS.2 Typically a network connectivity issue. Reconnect to the network and restart the device. Clear app data only if needed, noting that this removes downloads and signs you out. Netflix’s DLS.2 instructions.
Android: OF.NA.5 A problem with the SD card or external storage. Reinsert the card or try a different compatible card. If the card or device does not support the feature, use internal storage. Netflix’s OF.NA.5 instructions.
“You have downloads on too many devices.” Your plan’s download-device limit has been reached. Remove downloads from another device, or review plan options. Netflix’s device-limit guidance.
NQL.22005 A content license limits the number of simultaneous downloads. Delete downloads, including titles from other seasons if relevant. Netflix’s NQL.22005 guidance.

If there is no useful error code

When one title fails

If other downloads play, focus on that title: it may have failed during download, or it may not be available for download. For an iPhone or iPad showing -103, Netflix specifically recommends deleting and downloading the affected title again. A title-specific retry is different from clearing all app data, so start with it when appropriate.

When every download fails

Check sign-in, device compatibility, and whether a device or simultaneous-download limit is blocking access. If the message points to a live connection problem rather than a saved file, follow Netflix’s general “Cannot play title” connectivity guidance: restart the device, try a more reliable Wi-Fi connection, and check whether public Wi-Fi blocks streaming. If you customized VPN, proxy, or DNS settings, restore their defaults; if the connection problem persists, contact your internet provider. These network steps are not a blanket fix for every offline download.

Check app, operating system, title, and platform support

Netflix recommends updating the app and operating system for relevant download problems. Its download guidance lists Android phones and tablets, iPhone and iPad, Fire tablets, and Chromebooks with Google Play as download-capable categories, and says downloads are unavailable in the Windows app. Device and title support can change, so check Netflix’s current download guidance for your device. Some titles are not available to download at all.

Before clearing data or reinstalling

These are destructive troubleshooting steps: Netflix says clearing its app data on Android or reinstalling the app on iPhone or iPad removes downloaded titles and signs you out. Make sure you know how to sign back in before proceeding, and use these steps only after simpler checks or code-specific guidance point to them. Netflix details the effects in its download troubleshooting guide and DLST.N1009 instructions.
