How to Fix Netflix Audio and Video Out of Sync Issue

By Freedom251 Team · · 21 min read

Netflix audio and video can fall out of sync for several reasons, from a temporary app glitch to a delay caused by your TV, soundbar, Bluetooth headphones, or streaming device. Sometimes the issue appears only on one title, while other times it affects every show or movie you play.

The good news is that most lip-sync problems are fixable with a few practical checks: restarting playback, testing another title, adjusting audio output settings, updating the Netflix app, or changing how your device connects to speakers or the internet. The right fix depends on where the delay is happening—inside Netflix, on your playback device, or in your audio setup.

Common Reasons Netflix Audio and Video Go Out of Sync

Netflix audio and video can drift out of sync for several different reasons, and the cause is not always the Netflix app itself. The delay may come from the TV processing the picture, a streaming device sending the wrong audio format, a soundbar adding latency, a weak network connection, or a temporary app glitch. Identifying where the delay starts makes it much easier to choose the right fix instead of changing random settings.

Device processing delays

Smart TVs often apply picture enhancements such as motion smoothing, noise reduction, upscaling, dynamic contrast, or game mode adjustments. These features can add a small delay while the TV processes each frame. If the video is delayed but the audio plays immediately through a soundbar or receiver, voices may be heard before lips move. This is common on newer TVs when watching Netflix in 4K, HDR, Dolby Vision, or other high-processing modes.

Audio format and external speaker issues

Soundbars, AV receivers, Bluetooth headphones, and home theater systems can all introduce latency. Formats such as Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Atmos, or surround sound may require extra decoding time, especially if the TV passes audio through HDMI ARC, eARC, optical, or Bluetooth. Bluetooth audio is especially prone to delay because the sound must be compressed, transmitted wirelessly, and decoded by the headphones or speaker. If Netflix is in sync through the TV speakers but not through external audio equipment, the audio setup is usually the main suspect.

  • HDMI ARC or eARC delays: The TV and audio device may not agree on the best timing or audio format.
  • Optical audio limitations: Some TVs convert audio before sending it to the speaker system, which can add delay.
  • Bluetooth latency: Wireless headphones and speakers often lag behind the video unless they support low-latency codecs.
  • Surround sound decoding: Dolby Atmos or 5.1 audio can take longer to process than stereo audio.

Netflix app, browser, or device glitches

A temporary software issue can also cause Netflix lip sync problems. The app may cache corrupted playback data, the streaming device may run low on memory, or the browser may struggle with hardware acceleration. This can happen on Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, Android TV, game consoles, phones, tablets, and computers. If the problem appears suddenly after the app has been running for a long time, after switching episodes, or after pausing and resuming playback, a simple restart or app refresh often helps.

Internet speed and playback changes

Although audio sync issues are often local to the device, network problems can contribute. If your connection is unstable, Netflix may rapidly adjust video quality, buffer, or switch streams. During these changes, the app can sometimes fall slightly out of step, especially on older devices or busy Wi-Fi networks. This is more likely when streaming high-resolution content, sharing bandwidth with downloads or gaming, or using a weak Wi-Fi signal far from the router.

Possible Cause Common Sign
TV picture processing Audio plays before the actor’s lips move
Soundbar or receiver delay Sync improves when using TV speakers
Bluetooth audio latency Delay happens only with wireless headphones or speakers
App or device glitch Problem starts after pausing, resuming, or switching episodes
Unstable internet connection Sync issues appear with buffering or quality drops

In some cases, the issue is limited to one Netflix title, one language track, or one subtitle and audio combination. For example, a dubbed audio track may feel slightly mismatched because the spoken words were recorded separately from the original video. If only one movie or episode has the problem while everything else plays normally, the content file or selected audio track may be at fault rather than your device.

Quick Fixes to Try First

Before changing advanced audio settings or resetting your device, try a few basic fixes that clear the most common Netflix sync glitches. These steps work across smart TVs, Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, game consoles, phones, tablets, and web browsers. Test Netflix after each step so you can identify which change actually fixed the delay.

Pause, rewind, and restart playback

Start with the simplest playback refresh. Pause the movie or show for 10 to 20 seconds, then press play again. If the audio is still ahead of or behind the picture, rewind 10 seconds and resume. On some devices, Netflix may briefly lose synchronization after buffering, skipping intros, fast-forwarding, or switching episodes. Restarting the stream often forces the app to reload the audio and video tracks together.

Close Netflix and reopen it

If pausing does not help, fully close the Netflix app instead of just returning to the home screen. On a smart TV or streaming stick, press the Home button, open the app switcher if available, and quit Netflix. On iPhone or Android, swipe Netflix away from the recent apps screen. On a browser, close the Netflix tab and open a new one. Then launch Netflix again and replay the same title.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Smart TVs: exit Netflix, open another app briefly, then reopen Netflix.
  • Roku or Fire TV: press Home, highlight Netflix, and relaunch it from the apps menu.
  • Apple TV: double-press the TV button, swipe up on Netflix, then reopen it.
  • Mobile devices: force-close Netflix from recent apps, then start it again.
  • Browsers: close the tab, clear stuck playback by opening Netflix in a new tab, or try a private window.

Restart your device

A full restart can clear temporary memory issues, background app conflicts, HDMI handshake problems, and audio driver glitches. Turn the device off completely, wait at least 30 seconds, then turn it back on. For smart TVs and streaming devices, unplugging the power cable is often better than using the remote’s standby button. If you use a soundbar, AV receiver, or Bluetooth speaker, restart that equipment as well.

For a TV setup, use this order: turn off the TV, streaming device, and audio equipment; unplug them for 30 seconds; plug in the TV first; then the streaming device; then the soundbar or receiver. This helps the devices renegotiate audio and video timing over HDMI, ARC, or eARC.

Try a different title or profile

Play another Netflix movie or episode to see whether the problem affects all content or only one title. If only one show has delayed dialogue, the issue may be with that specific stream or audio track. Also try another Netflix profile on the same account. Profile-specific playback settings, subtitle preferences, or language selections can occasionally behave differently after an app update.

Change the audio track

Open the audio and subtitles menu while the title is playing and switch to a different audio option if one is available. For example, change from English 5.1 to English, or from a dubbed track to the original language. Surround sound tracks can sometimes create delay on TVs, soundbars, or receivers that do extra processing. If stereo audio fixes the sync, the issue is likely related to surround processing or HDMI audio output settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check cables and switch inputs

If you use HDMI, unplug and firmly reconnect the cable at both ends. Try another HDMI port on the TV, especially if your streaming device is connected through a receiver or HDMI switch. Damaged or older HDMI cables can cause signal interruptions that look like Netflix buffering or audio lag. If possible, connect the streaming device directly to the TV for a quick test, bypassing the soundbar or receiver.

Turn off extra video or audio processing

Many TVs and sound systems add processing that can delay either the picture or the sound. For a quick test, disable motion smoothing, game mode alternatives, virtual surround, dialogue enhancement, night mode, and automatic volume leveling. If the sync improves, turn features back on one at a time until you find the setting causing the delay.

Check Your Internet Connection and Netflix Playback Quality

A weak or unstable connection can make Netflix video pause, drop frames, or change quality while the audio keeps playing normally. This can look like a lip-sync problem, especially during busy evening hours, on crowded Wi-Fi, or when another device in your home is downloading, gaming, backing up photos, or streaming in 4K. Before changing TV or soundbar settings, check whether the stream itself is struggling to stay steady.

Start by running a speed test on the same device, or as close to it as possible. If your smart TV does not have a browser, test with a phone or laptop connected to the same Wi-Fi network and placed near the TV. Netflix recommends at least 3 Mbps for 720p HD, 5 Mbps for 1080p Full HD, and 15 Mbps or higher for 4K Ultra HD. Speed is only part of the picture, though. High latency, packet loss, or a fluctuating Wi-Fi signal can still cause playback problems even when the speed test result looks acceptable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Restart your modem and router: Unplug both for about 30 seconds, then reconnect the modem first and the router after the modem is fully online.
  • Move closer to the router: If Netflix is playing on a TV or streaming stick far from the router, test it closer or remove obstacles such as cabinets, thick walls, or appliances.
  • Use Ethernet if possible: A wired connection is more stable than Wi-Fi for smart TVs, game consoles, Apple TV, Roku, Fire TV, and Android TV boxes.
  • Pause heavy network activity: Stop large downloads, cloud backups, video calls, and other 4K streams while testing Netflix.
  • Switch Wi-Fi bands: Try 5 GHz for faster speeds at shorter range, or 2.4 GHz if the device is farther away and needs better wall penetration.

Next, check your Netflix playback quality settings. Open Netflix in a browser, go to your account settings, choose the profile you use, and look for Playback settings. If it is set to Auto, Netflix may change video quality during playback when the connection fluctuates. That usually works well, but on some devices the switch between quality levels can briefly create audio and video timing issues. For testing, set playback to Medium or High, save the change, then restart the Netflix app on your device. If the sync problem disappears on Medium, your connection or device may be struggling with higher-bitrate video.

Netflix Quality Typical Use Connection Target
Medium Stable playback on slower or busy networks About 3 Mbps or more
High HD 1080p shows and movies About 5 Mbps or more
Ultra HD 4K 4K content on supported plans and devices About 15 Mbps or more

If you are using a mobile device, also check whether Netflix is set to save data. In the Netflix app, open App Settings and review Cellular Data Usage or download/video quality options. On browsers, disable VPNs, proxy services, and bandwidth-saving extensions while testing, because they can route video traffic through slower servers. After making changes, replay the same scene that was out of sync. If Netflix stays synchronized after lowering quality or improving the connection, the issue is likely network-related rather than a problem with your TV, speakers, or the Netflix title itself.

Fix Audio Sync Issues on Smart TVs and Streaming Devices

If Netflix is still out of sync after basic restarts and network checks, the issue may be coming from your TV or streaming device settings. Smart TVs, Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, Android TV, and game consoles all process video and audio differently, especially when features like motion smoothing, Dolby audio, HDMI-CEC, or external speakers are involved. Start by testing Netflix on the same device with more than one title, then compare it with another app such as YouTube, Prime Video, or Disney+. If only Netflix is affected, focus on the Netflix app and device firmware; if every app is delayed, focus on TV audio output and HDMI settings.

On a smart TV, open the picture settings and turn off extra video processing features. Look for settings named Motion Smoothing, Motion Interpolation, TruMotion, Auto Motion Plus, MotionFlow, Noise Reduction, or Cinema Mode. These can add video processing delay, making dialogue appear late or early compared with the picture. If your TV has a Game Mode or Low Latency Mode, try enabling it while watching Netflix. Although designed for gaming, it often reduces processing delay enough to bring speech and mouth movement back in line.

Settings to check on common streaming devices

  • Roku: Go to Settings > Audio and try changing the digital output from Auto to Stereo or PCM. If you use a Roku TV, also check Settings > System > Advanced system settings > Advanced display settings and disable unnecessary display processing options.
  • Amazon Fire TV: Open Settings > Display & Sounds > Audio. Try switching Surround Sound from Best Available to PCM or Dolby Digital, depending on what your TV or receiver supports. Then restart the Fire TV from Settings > My Fire TV > Restart.
  • Apple TV: Go to Settings > Video and Audio. Run Wireless Audio Sync if you use AirPods, HomePods, or AirPlay speakers. You can also test Audio Format > Change Format and choose Dolby Digital 5.1 or Stereo to see which stays in sync.
  • Chromecast with Google TV or Android TV: Open Settings > Display & Sound > Advanced sound settings. Try disabling automatic surround sound and select PCM or Stereo. Also check for system updates under Settings > System > About > System update.
  • PlayStation or Xbox: In the console audio settings, switch the output format between Linear PCM, Bitstream, Dolby, or DTS. For Netflix testing, Linear PCM is often the simplest option if the console is connected directly to a TV.

HDMI connections can also cause sync problems, especially when the streaming device is connected through a receiver, HDMI switch, soundbar, or capture device before reaching the TV. For testing, connect the Roku, Fire TV Stick, Apple TV, or console directly to the TV with a different HDMI cable and use the TV speakers. If the audio lines up when connected directly, the delay is likely being introduced by the receiver, switch, or soundbar path. Also try a different HDMI port on the TV, preferably one labeled HDMI ARC, eARC, or a standard high-speed input depending on your setup.

Finally, make sure the device is not forcing a video format your TV struggles to process. In display settings, temporarily set the streaming device to a fixed resolution such as 1080p or 4K 60Hz instead of Auto. If the sync improves, the automatic frame rate or dynamic range switching may be part of the problem. On Apple TV and some Android TV devices, test settings such as Match Frame Rate and Match Dynamic Range both on and off. After each change, fully close Netflix and reopen it so the app starts a fresh playback session with the new audio and video settings.

Adjust Soundbar, Bluetooth, and Home Theater Audio Settings

If Netflix looks correct on the TV speakers but drifts out of sync when you use a soundbar, Bluetooth headphones, AV receiver, or surround system, the delay is likely happening in the audio chain rather than the Netflix stream itself. Extra processing, wireless transmission, HDMI handshakes, and surround sound decoding can all add milliseconds of latency. Start by testing Netflix with your TV’s built-in speakers, then switch back to your external audio setup. If the problem appears only with external audio, focus on the settings below.

Check audio delay or lip-sync controls

Many TVs, soundbars, and AV receivers include an Audio Delay, AV Sync, Lip Sync, or Digital Audio Delay setting. Open the audio settings on both your TV and sound device and look for a slider measured in milliseconds. If voices are heard before lips move, increase the delay. If lips move before the sound arrives, reduce the delay if your device allows negative adjustment, or disable processing features that may be adding lag. Make small changes, such as 10 ms to 20 ms at a time, then replay the same Netflix scene to compare.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Samsung TVs: Check Settings > Sound > Expert Settings > Digital Output Audio Delay.
  • LG TVs: Look under Sound > Advanced Settings > Match Screen and Sound or AV Sync Adjustment.
  • Sony/Google TVs: Try Settings > Display & Sound > Audio Output > A/V Sync.
  • AV receivers: Look for Lip Sync, Audio Delay, or Auto Lip Sync in the receiver’s HDMI or audio menu.

Change surround sound and digital audio formats

Netflix titles often use Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Atmos, or 5.1 surround sound when available. These formats can expose compatibility issues between your TV, HDMI ARC/eARC port, soundbar, and receiver. In your TV’s audio output settings, try switching from Auto or Bitstream to PCM. PCM is usually more compatible and may remove the delay, though it can reduce surround sound features on some setups. If you use a streaming stick or box, also check its audio settings and test Stereo, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, and Passthrough options.

For HDMI setups, connect the soundbar or receiver to the TV’s labeled ARC or eARC HDMI port, and use a high-speed HDMI cable. If your streaming device is plugged into the TV, the TV must pass audio to the sound system correctly. If it is plugged into the receiver or soundbar, that device must pass video to the TV without adding delay. Try both connection paths if your equipment supports them: streaming device to TV, then ARC/eARC to soundbar; or streaming device to soundbar/receiver, then HDMI out to TV.

Reduce Bluetooth and audio processing latency

Bluetooth headphones and speakers commonly create Netflix sync problems because wireless audio requires compression and transmission time. If your TV or streaming device supports low-latency Bluetooth codecs, enable them where available. Otherwise, test wired headphones, TV speakers, HDMI ARC/eARC, or optical audio to confirm whether Bluetooth is the source. Some Bluetooth earbuds also add delay when noise cancellation, spatial audio, or muloint pairing is active, so turn those features off during testing.

Soundbars and receivers may also apply extra processing that improves immersion but delays the audio. Temporarily disable Virtual Surround, 3D Audio, AI Sound, Night Mode, Dialogue Enhancer, Volume Leveling, and room correction modes. Then reopen Netflix and play a dialogue-heavy scene. If sync improves, re-enable features one at a time until you find the setting that causes the delay. For the most reliable Netflix playback, use a direct HDMI ARC/eARC connection, keep firmware updated on the TV and sound device, and use the simplest audio format that still gives you the sound quality you want.

Update, Reinstall, or Reset the Netflix App

If Netflix audio is still out of sync after checking your TV, streaming device, network, and audio equipment, the app itself may be the problem. Corrupted cache data, an outdated Netflix version, or a failed background update can cause delayed sound, frozen frames, or subtitles and dialogue that no longer match the picture. Updating or reinstalling the app often refreshes playback components without requiring changes to your whole device setup.

Update Netflix and your device software

Start by checking for Netflix app updates in your device’s app store. On smart TVs, open the built-in app store or apps menu and look for available updates. On Roku, highlight Netflix, press the star button on the remote, and choose Check for updates. On Fire TV, go to Settings > Applications > Appstore and make sure automatic updates are enabled, or update Netflix from the app page. On Apple TV, use the App Store, and on Android TV or Google TV, update Netflix from the Google Play Store.

Also install any pending system updates for the device itself. Netflix relies on the operating system for video decoding, DRM playback, HDMI handling, and audio output. A smart TV firmware update or streaming stick software update can fix timing problems that appear only in specific apps. After updating, fully restart the device instead of just closing Netflix. Unplugging a TV or streaming player for about 30 seconds can clear temporary playback errors that a normal standby mode may keep in memory.

Clear Netflix app data or reinstall the app

If updates do not help, clear the Netflix app cache or app data where your device allows it. On Android phones, Android tablets, Fire TV, and many Android TV devices, go to Settings > Apps > Netflix > Storage, then choose Clear cache. If the issue continues, choose Clear data or Clear storage. This signs you out and removes local app files, so you will need to log in again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On iPhone and iPad, there is no standard Netflix cache button, so uninstalling and reinstalling the app is the better option. Press and hold the Netflix app icon, remove the app, then download it again from the App Store. On many smart TVs and streaming devices, you can also delete Netflix and reinstall it from the device’s app store. After reinstalling, test the same title again, then test a different title to see whether the sync issue is app-wide or limited to one show or movie.

Reset Netflix without resetting everything

  • Sign out and sign back in: Open Netflix, go to the account or help menu, and sign out. This can refresh your profile session and playback settings.
  • Restart your profile test: Try another Netflix profile on the same account. If only one profile has the issue, playback preferences or watch data may be involved.
  • Disable downloads on mobile: If downloaded episodes are out of sync, delete the download and stream the title again. Then download a fresh copy over a stable Wi-Fi connection.
  • Reset the device app settings: On some TVs and streaming boxes, an app reset option restores Netflix to its default state without a full factory reset.

A full factory reset of your TV, phone, tablet, or streaming device should be a last step because it removes apps, accounts, and custom settings. Before doing that, confirm whether other streaming apps have the same audio delay. If Netflix is the only app affected after updating, clearing data, and reinstalling, the problem may be tied to the Netflix app version, a specific title, or compatibility with your device model.

When to Contact Netflix or Device Support

If you have restarted your device, checked your network, changed audio settings, updated the Netflix app, and tested different titles but the audio and video are still out of sync, it may be time to involve support. Before contacting anyone, narrow down where the problem happens. This helps you avoid being sent through generic troubleshooting steps and makes it easier for Netflix, your TV maker, or your streaming device manufacturer to identify the cause.

Contact Netflix support when the issue appears account- or title-specific

Reach out to Netflix if the sync problem happens only inside Netflix while other apps such as YouTube, Prime Video, Disney+, or local TV channels play normally. Netflix support is also the right place to start if one specific movie, episode, language track, or subtitle option is affected. For example, if English 5.1 audio is delayed but stereo audio works, or only one episode in a series has mismatched dialogue, Netflix can check whether there is a problem with that stream, audio track, or regional version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Test more than one title: Try a Netflix Original, an older movie, and a different TV episode to see whether the issue follows one title.
  • Change audio tracks: Switch between stereo, 5.1, Dolby Atmos, or another language if available.
  • Try another device: If Netflix is out of sync on your smart TV but fine on your phone or laptop, the issue may be device-related.
  • Check your account region and profile: Test another Netflix profile on the same device to rule out profile-specific playback settings.

Contact device support when the issue affects multiple apps or inputs

If audio delay also appears in other streaming apps, HDMI devices, cable boxes, game consoles, or live TV, Netflix is probably not the source. In that case, contact support for your smart TV, Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, Android TV box, PlayStation, Xbox, soundbar, AV receiver, or Bluetooth speaker. The problem may involve HDMI-CEC, eARC, passthrough audio, Dolby processing, a firmware bug, or a device-level audio delay setting that needs adjustment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Netflix out of sync only on my TV but not on my phone or laptop?

If Netflix works normally on other devices, the problem is likely with your TV, streaming stick, HDMI connection, or external audio setup rather than Netflix itself. Restart the TV and streaming device, try a different HDMI port or cable, and check for TV firmware updates. If you use a soundbar or receiver, test Netflix with the TV’s built-in speakers to see if the audio system is adding delay.

How do I fix Netflix audio delay when using a soundbar or home theater system?

Look in your TV, soundbar, or AV receiver settings for options such as Audio Delay, AV Sync, Lip Sync, or Digital Audio Delay. Start by reducing or increasing the delay in small steps until voices match mouth movement. You can also try switching the TV audio output from Dolby Digital or bitstream to PCM, which often reduces sync problems.

Can a slow internet connection cause Netflix audio and video to go out of sync?

Yes, unstable Wi-Fi or buffering can cause playback glitches, including audio drifting out of sync. Restart your router, move the device closer to the Wi-Fi router, or use Ethernet if possible. You can also lower Netflix playback quality temporarily to see if the sync issue improves on a slower or congested connection.

What should I do if Netflix audio is out of sync in a web browser?

First refresh the page, close extra tabs, and restart the browser. If the problem continues, clear the browser cache, disable extensions that affect video playback, and try another browser such as Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari. Updating your graphics drivers and browser can also help if the issue happens with other streaming sites too.

When should I contact Netflix or my device manufacturer about audio sync issues?

Contact Netflix if the issue happens across mulle devices, networks, and titles after restarting, updating, and reinstalling the app. Contact your TV, soundbar, streaming device, or receiver manufacturer if the problem only happens on one setup or after changing audio settings, HDMI equipment, or firmware. Before reaching out, note your device model, Netflix app version, title affected, and whether the issue happens with built-in speakers or external audio.

Bottom Line

Netflix audio and video sync problems usually come down to a temporary app glitch, slow connection, outdated software, or a delay introduced by your TV, streaming device, soundbar, or headphones. Start with the simple fixes first: restart everything, update the Netflix app and device firmware, test another title, check your internet speed, and try switching audio formats such as Dolby Digital, PCM, or stereo.

If the issue only happens on one device, focus on that device’s display, audio, Bluetooth, or HDMI settings; if it happens everywhere, check your network or Netflix account playback environment. When none of the fixes work, contact Netflix support or your TV, streaming device, or audio equipment manufacturer with the device model, app version, connection type, and examples of affected titles.
