If Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered crashes, stutters, or does not recognize a controller on Windows, work from least disruptive checks to more invasive ones: confirm the PC against EA’s requirements, save a DxDiag report, update Windows and the graphics driver, close conflicting background software, repair or verify the game files, and then test graphics and input devices one at a time. Reinstalling or replacing hardware should come only after those checks. Controller-triggered crashes reported in EA’s forums are individual cases, not proof of a universal game defect.
Start with the symptom and the lowest-risk test
The game was released on November 6, 2020. EA’s current Windows requirements and support articles are the best baseline, but they do not guarantee that every system meeting the minimum specification will be free of crashes or stutter. Use the branch that matches what you see, and change one thing at a time so you know which test mattered.

| Symptom | First checks | Escalate when |
|---|---|---|
| Crash before the menu or crash to desktop | Requirements and DxDiag, Windows and GPU-driver updates, background apps, then game-file repair | The crash remains after a clean boot and a file repair |
| Crash when pressing a keyboard or controller button | Disconnect other input devices, update the device driver, repair or verify files, and test without overlays | The same device causes a repeatable crash after isolation |
| Stuttering or uneven frame delivery | Use the dedicated GPU, lower settings, close background programs, test a frame cap or V-Sync | Stutter continues at conservative settings with a current driver |
| Controller shown as “unrecognized” | Connect one controller, check its official driver, and remove other HID game devices temporarily for testing | The device fails in Windows or still is not detected alone |
Compare the cost and risk of each step
| Action | Cost | Disruption and evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Close programs, update Windows, or test a setting | Free | Reversible and appropriate first |
| Repair EA-app files or verify Steam files | Usually free | May redownload changed files; directly tests installation integrity |
| Clean boot or isolate input devices | Free | Useful for finding conflicts; restore normal startup and reconnect hardware afterward |
| Reinstall the game or EA app | Uses time, storage, and bandwidth | More disruptive; cannot fix a bad driver, overlay, or defective device |
| Buy a replacement controller | Paid | Only sensible after the existing device fails outside the game or has an obvious hardware fault |
This order prevents an expensive guess from replacing a simple diagnosis. Do not purchase driver-updater software, “PC repair” utilities, or a GPU upgrade solely because the game crashes; the published requirements and DxDiag report should establish whether hardware is actually below the baseline.

Source: Electronic Arts’ Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered product page. Meeting the minimum only establishes that the PC is within EA’s stated baseline; it does not identify a particular crash or prove that an upgrade will cure one.
Check free disk space as well as the nominal 45 GB requirement. A nearly full system drive can complicate updates, shader caches, or a repair that needs temporary space. If the game is on an external or unusually slow drive, note that fact for support, but do not assume moving it will cure a crash unless testing shows a difference.
Save the report Windows support will need
EA’s DxDiag guide recommends collecting this information when a PC game crashes, runs slowly, or has graphics problems. DxDiag records the processor, memory, graphics adapter, driver version and date, and DirectX information.

- Select Save All Information and save the text report somewhere you can find it.
- Note the exact symptom, the point at which it occurs, and whether it happens every time.
Read EA’s step-by-step explanation at How to diagnose game issues on your PC using DxDiag. On a laptop, also check which GPU the game is using: a system can contain a capable dedicated GPU while the game is assigned to integrated graphics. Record the GPU actually selected, not just the model listed on the laptop’s retail specification.
2. Apply EA’s general crash fixes
Close programs that can interfere
Exit browsers with many tabs, recording or streaming tools, hardware-monitoring utilities, RGB control panels, and other launchers before starting the game. Disable overlays temporarily, including those supplied by your launcher, chat software, or GPU utility. This is a diagnostic step, not a requirement to keep every background program disabled permanently.
If the crash disappears only when background tasks are disabled, perform a Windows clean boot to identify the interfering service or startup item. Re-enable items in groups afterward rather than leaving essential security or system services off. Keep a short list of what was disabled and what changed; that makes it possible to restore normal startup without guessing.
Repair files in the EA app
For an installation managed by the EA app:
- Open the EA app and choose Library.
- Find Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered.
- Open Manage, then select Repair.
- Wait for the scan and replacement of damaged or missing files, then restart the game.
EA documents this sequence in Troubleshoot PC, PlayStation®, and Xbox crashing or freezing. Repair is preferable to reinstalling because it is less disruptive and tests the installation directly. Do not interrupt the process or launch the game while the app is replacing files.

Verify files when the game is installed through Steam
The EA app’s repair menu does not apply directly to a Steam-managed installation. Use Steam’s installed-file verification function for the game, allow it to reacquire any changed files, and then test again. If the issue remains, provide the Steam installation details and the DxDiag report to EA support rather than repeatedly deleting and reinstalling files. A verification result does not rule out a controller driver or overlay conflict, so continue with the input isolation steps when the crash occurs on a button press.
Keep Windows and the graphics driver current
Install pending Windows updates, restart, and then obtain the graphics driver from the GPU manufacturer’s official support channel. EA’s DxDiag guidance specifically says to verify that the computer meets the game’s minimum requirements and that the graphics driver is fully updated. A new driver can also introduce a conflict; if the problem began immediately after a driver change, record that timing and follow the manufacturer’s supported rollback option instead of installing random third-party driver packages.
Reinstall only after repair and verification
EA lists reinstalling the game and the EA app among its crash steps. Treat this as a later option: it consumes considerably more time and bandwidth than a repair or file verification and will not correct an unrelated driver, overlay, or input-device problem. Preserve your DxDiag report and symptom notes before starting. If you reinstall, retest before adding overlays, remapping tools, or extra USB devices so the clean installation remains a useful baseline.
3. Reduce stutter and graphics-related instability
Test conservative graphics settings
If the PC is close to the minimum specification, lower the game’s graphics options and close unnecessary programs. On a laptop, assign the game to the dedicated GPU in Windows or the GPU vendor’s graphics-control panel. Test a short repeatable section of gameplay after each change. Write down the setting and result; otherwise it is easy to mistake a different scene or background task for an improvement.
Use a frame cap or V-Sync as a diagnostic
EA’s crash guidance recommends trying a frame-rate cap and enabling Vertical Sync (V-Sync) to match frame output to the display’s refresh rate. These settings can change latency or visual smoothness, so compare them in the same scene rather than judging from the menu alone. If either setting removes the stutter, keep the option that gives the better balance for your display. If neither changes the symptom, return to the prior setting and continue with driver and device checks rather than stacking multiple unexplained changes.
Test the DirectX option when the game exposes it
EA’s PC graphics guidance suggests disabling the latest DirectX version in the game’s video settings and restarting, if that setting is available. This is a compatibility test drawn from general EA advice, not a confirmed Hot Pursuit Remastered-specific cure. Restore the option if it has no effect or makes performance worse. Do not download replacement DirectX files from unofficial websites.
Return overclocks to factory values
If you manually overclocked the CPU or GPU, restore factory clocks and test again. A game that appears stable in other workloads can still expose marginal overclock settings. Do not change voltage or firmware settings merely because the game stutters; first test the reversible software and graphics options above.

Install all available Windows updates and restart before retesting. EA’s DirectX and EA app guidance also describes installing Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime when libraries required by the EA app are missing. This is a targeted remedy for missing-component or launcher errors, not evidence that every crash requires a DirectX runtime reinstall.
Use EA’s instructions at Troubleshoot DirectX and Windows for the EA app. Avoid downloading replacement DLL files from unofficial sites; they can be outdated, modified, or unsafe. If there is no missing-component message, finish the normal file, driver, and input checks before treating DirectX as the cause.
5. Fix controller, wheel, and button-triggered crashes methodically
Separate recognition from a game crash
“Controller not recognized” and “the game starts but crashes when I press a button” are different failure modes. First determine whether Windows sees the device, then determine whether the game fails only when that device sends input. EA forum users have reported an Xbox controller appearing as “unrecognized,” mapping problems, and a Logitech G29 crash after a key or button press. These are community reports, not an official compatibility list or prevalence measurement.
See the reports in the G29 button-crash discussion and the controller-recognition discussion.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRun an isolation test
- Close the game completely.
- Disconnect extra controllers, wheels, USB adapters, and virtual-input hardware. Leave one intended input device connected.
- Check that device in Windows and install its driver or firmware only from the manufacturer’s official support page.
- Start the game and test a basic button before changing bindings.
- If the problem disappears, reconnect devices one at a time to identify the conflict.
A community reply in another EA controller discussion suggests checking for multiple enabled HID game controllers. Treat that as an investigation lead: identify each device carefully and disable or disconnect only hardware you recognize for the duration of the test. Do not randomly disable Windows HID entries. Virtual controllers, racing-wheel software, and leftover USB adapters can all make the device list harder to interpret, so record exactly what was connected for each test.
Check security software and overlays only as a controlled test
In the G29 discussion, an EA staff member suggested checking wheel-driver updates and whether security software interferes. Temporarily test with an overlay closed and, where your security product supports it, use its documented game exception or diagnostic mode. Restore protection immediately after the test; do not leave antivirus protection disabled as a permanent fix. If a security exception changes the result, tell EA and the security-software vendor which executable was involved instead of keeping broad protection disabled.

Do not assume a replacement controller is the answer
Buying another PC-compatible Xbox-style gamepad may be reasonable only if the existing device fails in Windows or has a defective cable, but the available reports do not establish that a new controller fixes this game’s recognition or crash behavior. Complete the one-device, driver, and file-repair tests first. A replacement is a hardware purchase, not a confirmed software remedy.
6. Lower-confidence fixes for a repeatable key-binding crash
After the official checks, repair or verification, and driver isolation, you can try case-specific suggestions collected in an EA discussion about crashes while changing keys:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Clear the EA app cache using the app’s supported cache-clear option.
- Check whether security software or write permissions prevent the game from saving settings.
- Disable overlays and retest.
- As a reversible compatibility experiment, test Windows 8 compatibility mode or disable fullscreen optimizations; one user reported that combination helped their case.
These suggestions come from individual reports and should not replace current Windows, driver, repair, or isolation steps. Keep a note of every setting changed so you can undo an unsuccessful experiment. If compatibility mode changes nothing, return it to its normal state before testing another variable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Escalate with useful evidence
If the game still crashes, stutters at conservative settings, or fails with one known-good input device, contact EA support with a concise reproducible description. Include:
- The storefront (EA app or Steam) and whether the game reaches the menu.
- Whether the failure is a launch crash, crash to desktop, crash after a specific key or button, controller “unrecognized” behavior, or persistent stutter.
- Your DxDiag report, Windows version, GPU model, driver version and date, and whether a laptop used its dedicated GPU.
- Which steps changed the behavior: clean boot, repair or verification, driver update, frame cap, V-Sync, DirectX setting, or one-device input testing.
- The exact controller or wheel model and its official driver or firmware version.
Do not turn forum anecdotes into a claim that a particular controller, driver, or graphics setting is universally broken. A reproducible symptom plus the DxDiag data gives support a far better starting point than repeated reinstalls or an unexplained hardware purchase.
Quick decision checklist
- Confirm the 64-bit Windows, CPU, 8 GB RAM, DirectX 11-compatible GPU, and 45 GB storage baseline published by EA.
- Save DxDiag and identify the GPU and driver actually used by the game.
- Update Windows and the official GPU driver, then restart.
- Close overlays and background utilities; use a clean boot only if that changes the symptom.
- Repair through the EA app or verify installed files through Steam.
- For stutter, lower settings and test a frame cap, V-Sync, the available DirectX option, and factory clock speeds one at a time.
- For input failures, test one recognized controller or wheel with its official driver and no extra HID devices.
- Reinstall only after these checks, and contact EA with the report and exact reproduction steps if the fault remains.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will meeting EA’s minimum requirements guarantee that the game will not crash?
No. EA’s minimum specification is a baseline: 64-bit Windows 10, the listed processor class, 8 GB RAM, a DirectX 11-compatible Radeon HD 5870 or GeForce GT 640 class GPU, and 45 GB storage. A system can meet it and still have a driver, overlay, file, or input-device conflict.

Is EA app Repair the same as Steam file verification?
They serve a similar diagnostic purpose but are storefront-specific. Use Library > Manage > Repair in the EA app. For a Steam installation, use Steam’s installed-file verification; the EA app repair menu does not directly manage those files.
What should I do if Hot Pursuit Remastered crashes when I press a controller button?
Disconnect every extra controller, wheel, adapter, and virtual-input device. Leave one device connected, install its official driver, close overlays, repair or verify the game files, and test a basic button before changing bindings. Reconnect devices individually if the crash disappears.
Should I disable HID devices to fix an unrecognized controller?
Only as a careful, temporary isolation test, and only after identifying the device. Community advice mentions multiple enabled HID game controllers, but randomly disabling Windows HID entries can disable unrelated hardware. Disconnect recognizable extra devices first.
Recommended Free Tools
Can lowering graphics settings fix stutter?
It can help a PC near EA’s minimum specification, but it is a diagnostic rather than a guaranteed cure. Also confirm the dedicated GPU is selected, close unnecessary programs, update the official driver, and test a frame cap or V-Sync in the same gameplay scene.
Should I reinstall DirectX for every crash?
No. EA’s DirectX guidance is aimed at missing libraries or EA-app/launcher errors. Keep Windows updated and use Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime only when the error points to a missing component; do not download DLL replacements from unofficial sites.
Is buying a new controller a reliable fix?
No confirmed game-wide fix has been established. Consider a replacement only when the existing controller fails in Windows or has an obvious cable or hardware defect. Complete driver, one-device, overlay, and file-repair tests first.
The Bottom Line
Use EA’s requirements and DxDiag report to establish a baseline, then work through updates, background-app isolation, storefront-appropriate file repair, conservative graphics settings, and one-device controller testing. Frame caps, V-Sync, DirectX-option changes, compatibility mode, and replacement hardware are tests or last resorts—not universal fixes. If the same failure remains reproducible, send EA the report and exact trigger instead of repeatedly reinstalling or buying hardware.
