Random MySQL restarts on a small VPS are usually a resource or service-management problem, not a mystery inside one setting. First match the restart time with both MySQL’s error log and the Linux kernel log. An out-of-memory (OOM) kill, a full disk, exhausted file descriptors, a repeatable query failure, and a restart triggered by systemd or a health check leave different evidence. Only after identifying that evidence should you change innodb_buffer_pool_size or other limits.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
This guide gives you a repeatable runbook for a 1 GB-class VPS and explains how to distinguish a real mysqld crash from a process that was killed, restarted, or made unavailable by another component.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStart by proving what “crash” means
A monitoring alert that says “MySQL is down” does not prove that mysqld crashed. A service manager may have restarted it, a health check may have failed while the server was busy, or a client may have lost its connection during a brief stall. Conversely, the Linux kernel can kill mysqld outright, leaving no normal shutdown message.
Record the exact UTC time of every incident, including when clients first failed and when the service became available again. You need that timestamp to correlate independent logs rather than guess from the latest message.

Run a first-pass resource and service check
free -h
swapon --show
df -h
systemctl status mysql
journalctl -k -b | grep -i -E 'oom|out of memory|killed process'
Use the service name installed on your distribution if it differs (for example, some systems expose a MariaDB-compatible unit name). Save the command output before restarting anything; it can contain the only evidence of a short-lived failure.
free -hshows RAM and available memory from the operating system’s perspective.swapon --showshows whether swap exists and where it is configured.df -hidentifies a filesystem that is full or nearly full.systemctl status mysqlreports the unit’s current state, recent exit status, and often the last journal lines.- The kernel query searches the current boot for OOM and process-kill messages.
These commands are triage, not a fix. A clean-looking snapshot taken after recovery can hide a peak that occurred several minutes earlier, so always compare it with the logs.
Correlate the MySQL and operating-system logs
MySQL’s troubleshooting guidance is to examine the MySQL error log and the system log together, while also checking memory, disk space, and file descriptors. Find the error-log path in the server configuration or service output, then inspect the minutes before and after the recorded restart.
Evidence of an OOM kill
The Linux OOM killer acts when a process attempts an allocation and the server has no memory available. Kernel messages commonly contain phrases such as “out of memory,” “oom-kill,” or “Killed process” followed by the mysqld process ID. The kernel sends SIGKILL; the process cannot catch that signal and cannot perform a normal MySQL shutdown. Consequently, the MySQL error log may stop abruptly, without orderly InnoDB shutdown messages.
Check the kernel log for the same minute as the outage, not merely for any OOM event from the current boot. If another process was killed, the VPS may still have a memory problem, but that particular event does not prove that MySQL died.
Evidence of a normal or managed restart
A controlled stop usually leaves a sequence in the MySQL error log showing shutdown initiation, storage-engine cleanup, and a subsequent startup. A systemd restart may show a stop and start in the unit journal even when no internal MySQL fault occurred. Compare systemctl status mysql and the journal with the error log to see whether an administrator, deployment, watchdog, or service policy initiated the action.

Evidence of a MySQL-internal failure
If there is no OOM message, no full filesystem, and no managed restart, inspect the last error-log event before the process disappeared. An assertion failure, stack trace, or repeated InnoDB error points toward a server defect, corrupted data, or a specific workload. Preserve the original log before attempting recovery, because a restart can rotate or overwrite the most useful context.
Measure the whole memory footprint, not just the buffer pool
innodb_buffer_pool_size is the largest single allocation on many InnoDB servers, but it is only one part of the resident memory footprint. MySQL also allocates per-thread buffers and feature-specific memory for connections, sorting, joins, temporary tables, replication, and other operations. A high connection count can therefore exhaust RAM even when the configured buffer pool appears to fit.
What must fit on a low-memory VPS
- The operating system and filesystem cache.
mysqlditself, including the buffer pool and internal metadata.- Per-connection and per-operation buffers multiplied by concurrent activity.
- PHP, application, queue, web-server, or cron workers sharing the VPS.
- Monitoring, backup, security, and control-panel agents.
- Temporary files and other services that consume RAM during bursts.
The apparent free memory at an idle moment is not a safe allocation budget. A traffic spike can create many sessions or large temporary tables simultaneously. Treat unexplained OOM events as evidence that the aggregate peak exceeds physical RAM plus acceptable swap, even if average usage looks comfortable.
Choose a safe innodb_buffer_pool_size
MySQL’s default configuration is designed to let a server start on a virtual machine with approximately 512 MB of RAM. For a dedicated database host, MySQL documentation commonly describes a buffer pool of roughly 50 to 75 percent of system memory. A shared, low-memory VPS is not that dedicated host: the operating system and application workers need headroom, and the upper end of that range can make an OOM event more likely.
How to size a 1 GB VPS without guessing
- Measure the VPS while the application is under a realistic peak, not only while idle. Record total and available memory, swap use, active MySQL threads, and the resident size of application processes.
- Reserve memory for the operating system, application workers, monitoring, and short-lived bursts. Do not assign every remaining megabyte to InnoDB.
- Account for connection and temporary-table settings. Their worst-case allocations multiply with concurrency, so a nominal buffer-pool percentage is not a complete budget.
- Set a conservative initial value, restart in a maintenance window, and observe the same workload. Increase only when logs and memory measurements show sustained headroom; decrease when kernel pressure or swapping rises.
For example, if a 1 GB VPS regularly uses 300 MB outside MySQL and needs another 200 MB of burst headroom, only about 500 MB remains as a theoretical ceiling for all MySQL allocations. The buffer pool must be below that ceiling because connection buffers and internal allocations still need space. The arithmetic illustrates the method; it is not a universal value for every workload.
Change one major contributor at a time. If you lower the buffer pool, connection limits, and temporary-table settings simultaneously, you may not know which change removed the peak or which one caused a performance regression.

Inspect the active values
Configuration files may not reflect values supplied at startup or by a management layer. Verify the running server’s settings, including the buffer pool, connection limit, and temporary-table limits, using your normal administrative client. Record the values with the incident timestamp so a later restart does not erase the comparison.
Also check whether a distribution package or hosting panel generated an additional option file. A setting in an unused file does nothing, while a value supplied through a systemd unit or drop-in can override what you edit in my.cnf.
Use swap as a shock absorber, not as extra RAM
Swap can prevent an immediate kill during a short allocation spike by giving the kernel somewhere to move inactive pages. It cannot provide the throughput of physical memory. Sustained swapping makes database latency unpredictable and is a capacity warning, even if the OOM messages stop.
Confirm that swap exists with swapon --show, then monitor both swap occupancy and I/O during the workload that precedes the restart. If the VPS has no swap, an appropriately sized swap area may provide useful emergency headroom, subject to your provider’s storage and performance limits. If swap remains heavily used, reduce aggregate memory demand or move to a larger-memory VPS rather than continually increasing swap.
Check systemd limits and service-manager behavior
A systemd unit can impose memory, task, open-file, or restart policies independently of MySQL option files. Inspect the unit and any drop-in override when the service status suggests it was stopped or restarted by the manager. Some limits belong in an override.conf drop-in rather than only in a MySQL option group.
Use the unit’s journal and status output to determine whether systemd recorded a resource-limit termination, a failed start, or an automatic restart. Edit the appropriate drop-in through your distribution’s documented procedure, reload the unit configuration, and schedule a controlled restart. Do not remove limits blindly: a limit can protect the rest of a small VPS, and raising it may simply move the failure to the kernel OOM killer.

When one query appears to trigger the death
Look at the last event in the MySQL error log before each restart. If the same statement, table operation, or connection pattern repeatedly precedes the failure, treat it as a reproducible workload problem rather than immediately changing global memory values.
Reproduce under controlled logging
- Make a backup and choose a maintenance or staging environment where a test will not endanger production data.
- Enable the appropriate MySQL query log only for a controlled reproduction, because logging adds I/O and can itself consume disk space.
- Run the smallest workload that still triggers the failure, recording concurrency, parameters, temporary-table behavior, and available memory.
- Disable the extra logging after the reproduction and preserve the error log, query sample, server version, and configuration snapshot.
- Test the isolated statement against a current supported MySQL release. If it still fails, prepare a minimal reproducible case and the associated stack trace for a bug report or support request.
A query that is merely slow can cause health checks to time out without killing mysqld. Confirm the process state and kernel evidence before labeling a timeout a crash.
Rule out disk-space and file-descriptor exhaustion
A full data, log, or temporary-file filesystem can prevent writes, startup, or recovery. df -h shows capacity, but also inspect where MySQL writes its error log, binary logs, relay logs, and temporary files. Correct log retention and remove or archive files using a procedure that is safe for your replication and recovery requirements.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Handle InnoDB recovery safely
After an abrupt kill, InnoDB may perform crash recovery during startup. Recovery messages in the error log are not a reason to delete database files. Preserve the log, allow the documented recovery process to complete, and follow MySQL’s recovery-failure procedure if startup cannot finish.
If recovery repeatedly fails, stop making speculative configuration changes and capture the complete startup error, server version, storage layout, and backup status. Deleting or renaming InnoDB data files can turn a recoverable outage into permanent data loss.

Pick the remedy that matches the evidence
| Remedy | Peak-memory headroom | Throughput and latency | Swap and disk impact | Operational risk | What it addresses |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Lower innodb_buffer_pool_size |
Increases RAM headroom immediately | May reduce cache hit rate and increase disk reads | Can reduce swapping if the pool caused pressure | Requires a restart; validate workload afterward | A large, persistent MySQL allocation |
| Reduce connection or per-operation memory exposure | Limits concurrency-driven peaks | May queue clients or slow memory-heavy statements | Usually lowers temporary-file pressure when tuned correctly | Application changes may be required | Aggregate connection and feature-specific allocations |
| Stop or resize competing services | Returns their RAM to the VPS budget | Can affect the web or worker tier | Usually little direct disk effect | Risk depends on which service is removed | Non-MySQL consumers sharing the host |
| Add suitable swap | Provides short-spike protection | Severe latency when actively swapping | Uses disk space and I/O | Lower than an immediate OOM, but not a capacity solution | Brief bursts, not sustained demand |
| Correct disk or descriptor limits | No direct RAM gain | Restores writes or connections once the resource is available | Reclaims capacity or raises a valid limit | Retention and limit changes need review | Resource exhaustion unrelated to buffer-pool size |
| Move to a larger-memory VPS | Provides the largest durable margin | Usually improves tail latency under load | Reduces dependence on swap | Migration and cost planning are required | Persistent demand that tuning cannot safely contain |
The table separates root-cause remedies from spike-masking measures. Swap and automatic restarts can reduce the visible outage while leaving the underlying capacity problem unchanged.

- Capture the incident time, MySQL error log, systemd status, kernel messages,
free -h,swapon --show, anddf -houtput. - Classify the evidence as OOM, managed restart, query-related failure, disk exhaustion, descriptor exhaustion, or InnoDB recovery.
- Record active values for
innodb_buffer_pool_size, connection limits, temporary-table settings, and relevant systemd limits. - Choose one change that directly addresses the classification. Do not combine unrelated memory changes in the same restart.
- Restart during a maintenance window and watch kernel, MySQL, and service-manager logs in real time.
- Exercise the workload that previously produced the outage, including its peak concurrency.
- Keep the change only after your own observation period shows stable operation without a new OOM signature, runaway swap, disk exhaustion, or repeated error-log failure.
“It restarted successfully” is not proof that the issue is fixed. A successful start only proves that the current memory demand fit at that moment. Stability must be demonstrated over the traffic pattern that caused the original incident.
Know when the VPS is simply too small
If OOM events continue after conservative tuning, removal of competing services, and correction of connection peaks, the plan does not have safe headroom for the workload. A larger-memory VPS is then the durable option. Persistent pressure should not be managed by pushing the buffer pool lower indefinitely: eventually query latency, disk reads, or swap activity will make the database unusable even if the kernel stops killing it.
Plan the move using a tested backup, a defined cutover, and a rollback path. Size the destination for peak aggregate memory, not the idle footprint, and leave room for operating-system and application growth.
Frequently Asked Questions
How can I tell whether the Linux OOM killer killed MySQL?
Match the outage timestamp with journalctl -k -b output. A message naming an OOM condition or “Killed process” with the mysqld process indicates a kernel SIGKILL; the MySQL log often ends without a normal shutdown sequence.
Should I set the buffer pool to 75 percent of RAM on a 1 GB VPS?
Not automatically. The 50–75 percent guidance assumes a more dedicated database host. On a shared 1 GB VPS, first reserve memory for the operating system, application workers, connection buffers, temporary tables, and monitoring, then choose a value that leaves measured peak headroom.
Why did MySQL restart without an OOM message?
Check the service journal and error log for a managed restart, a repeatable query failure, disk or file-descriptor exhaustion, or InnoDB recovery. A health-check timeout can also make a busy but living server appear to have crashed.
Is adding swap enough to stop random crashes?
Swap can cushion a brief allocation spike, but sustained swap use causes severe latency and signals inadequate RAM. If memory pressure persists after tuning, resize the VPS rather than treating swap as a permanent replacement for physical memory.
