When MTG Arena will not update, reject a login, lose its connection, or leave you waiting in a queue, start by checking whether Wizards’ service is available. If the service is operating normally, match the remedy to the exact symptom: recover the account for credential failures, use the targeted proxy fix only for a “Checking for Updates” Null Reference error, perform a clean PC installation for broader update failures, and test the network path for connection drops or lag.
Use this order before changing anything
Most wasted troubleshooting comes from applying a valid fix to the wrong failure. A password reset will not repair a blocked school network, and deleting the game will not make an account outage disappear. Work through these checks in order:

- Check the official MTG Arena status page. An outage or maintenance window can make every play queue inaccessible. Local reinstalls, router changes, and password resets cannot restore a service that is offline.
- Identify the visible failure. Note whether the client is checking for updates, refusing credentials, failing to connect, disconnecting during play, or waiting indefinitely for a match.
- Apply the narrowest relevant fix. The Null Reference procedure is for that named error, while the clean-install procedure is for broader PC installation and update failures.
- Change one local setting at a time. If a firewall, proxy, VPN, DNS setting, or hosts-file edit is tested, record the original value so it can be restored when the test is complete.
Wizards’ October 5, 2026 maintenance notice said all services and play queues would be unavailable during maintenance scheduled for October 7, with an expected duration of eight hours. That date has passed, so it is historical context rather than a current outage forecast; always use the live status page for today’s condition.

When MTG Arena will not let you log in
Reset the password through the official account flow
Use Wizards’ password-reset process rather than a third-party recovery service. The account-recovery article was updated July 8, 2026. Enter the email address associated with the account and follow the message sent by Wizards.

Look in every relevant inbox
If the reset email does not appear, check the spam or junk folder and any other email addresses you may have used for the account. Search for messages from Wizards rather than relying only on the primary inbox view. A missing message does not prove that the account is gone; it can indicate a different address, filtering, or a delivery delay.
Use Access Issues when self-service recovery fails
If the reset process still does not restore access, submit a support request and select Access Issues. Include the account email, platform, the exact message shown, and the approximate time of the failed attempt, but never send a password or other secret credential. Keep recovery on official Wizards pages so that a person offering to “unlock” the account cannot capture your login details.
Fix a PC update stuck on “Checking for Updates”
Null Reference error: apply the specific proxy test
Wizards’ article titled “Stuck Checking for Updates with a Null Reference Error,” updated July 9, 2026, gives a proxy-setting procedure for this named condition. On Windows, open Control Panel → Internet Options → Connections → LAN Settings, then clear the proxy-server option described by Wizards. Apply the change, restart Arena, and test the update again.

This is not a universal instruction to disable a proxy. A proxy may be required by a workplace, school, or managed security policy. If the Null Reference error remains after the targeted test, restore the required setting and contact support. Mac users should follow the Mac-specific proxy directions in the same Wizards article rather than substituting the Windows path.
Why the error-specific distinction matters
A client that is merely slow, an installer that fails partway through, and a client that reports Null Reference are different cases. Treating every update problem as a proxy problem can weaken a legitimate network control without addressing the actual cause. Use the clean-install route below for general PC installation or update failures.
Clean-install MTG Arena when the PC installer or updater fails
Wizards’ “Can’t Install or Update MTG Arena on PC” guidance identifies partial previous installations, network problems, and Windows-level problems as possible blockers. A clean installation removes damaged or incomplete Arena files before downloading a fresh client.

- Close Arena and its installer. Do not remove files while the client is running.
- Locate the installed game folder. If Arena uses the default Wizards of the Coast installation directory, remove the MTGA folder from that location. If you installed to a custom path, identify that Arena folder instead.
- Uninstall MTG Arena through Windows’ installed-apps or uninstall interface.
- Download Arena again from the official source and install it.
- Use the 64-bit client. Wizards’ guidance specifies the 64-bit version for current PC installation troubleshooting.
- Try the Steam installation if the webpage installer continues to fail. This changes the delivery path and can help distinguish an installer-specific problem from a broader Windows or network issue.
Delete only the relevant Arena folder. Do not remove unrelated Wizards files, personal documents, or other game directories. If you cannot tell which folder belongs to Arena, stop and ask support rather than guessing.

Rule out a service outage first
The status check at the start of this guide is decisive here. If Wizards reports an outage or maintenance, wait for service restoration instead of repeatedly reinstalling the client.
Restart the local path
Restart the computer and router, then launch Arena again. This clears temporary client, operating-system, and home-router states without changing permanent security settings.
Compare another network or computer
If available, test Arena on another network or another computer. A successful test elsewhere points toward the original network, device, or security configuration; failure everywhere makes a service-side or account-side problem more plausible. This comparison is diagnostic, not proof of a single cause.
Check managed networks and security software
School and workplace networks may block game traffic. Firewalls and antivirus products can also prevent the client from reaching its services. Test with the appropriate Arena exception or security setting according to your administrator’s policy. If you temporarily disable a control for diagnosis, use the shortest possible test, re-enable it immediately afterward, and do not do this on a managed device without permission.

Test without VPN or proxy
A VPN or proxy changes the route and can interfere with authentication or game traffic. If one is active, test a normal direct connection, then restore the service if it is required for your work or privacy. The test shows whether the route is involved; it does not establish that VPNs or proxies are inherently incompatible with Arena.

Reduce lag and repeated disconnections
Remove competing traffic
Close programs that consume the internet, especially video streaming, large downloads, cloud synchronization, and other game launchers. Wizards’ support guidance specifies broadband of at least 25 Mbps download and 3 Mbps upload. That figure is support guidance, not a guarantee: latency, packet loss, congestion, and the route to the service can still cause problems on a faster connection.
Try a wired connection
For a PC with an Ethernet port or adapter, connect directly to the router and repeat the same match or test. Wired networking is a diagnostic comparison for an unstable Wi-Fi link, not a requirement for every player. If wired play is stable while Wi-Fi is not, investigate wireless interference, distance, access-point placement, or router configuration.
Compare another ISP or network
When practical, test a different network or internet provider. A change in behavior can reveal congestion or routing trouble that local reinstalls cannot fix. Record which network was used and when the disconnection occurred so support can use that information.
Mobile connection problems
On a phone or tablet, use Wi-Fi when available, close background apps, and restart the device. If the problem persists across otherwise reliable Wi-Fi and cellular tests, Wizards’ guidance points players to their mobile carrier. The official mobile FAQ states that an internet connection is required and recommends Wi-Fi for stability.
Do not treat older device specifications in that FAQ as current compatibility requirements without checking a current platform source. Mobile operating systems, supported hardware, and client builds can change independently of the troubleshooting advice.
When matchmaking will not start
Separate a queue failure from an unfair-looking pairing
A queue that never advances is a service or connection symptom. A match that starts but feels uneven is a matchmaking-behavior question. Use the status and connection checks for the former; do not assume that changing DNS, reinstalling, or deleting a deck will repair a queue that is unavailable server-side.

What Wizards says about unranked matchmaking
In its June 3, 2024 article “MTG Arena Matchmaking and You,” Wizards explains that unranked matchmaking considers relative deck power and player skill while trying to find fair matches. The article also acknowledges the limits of any system:
“With a game as complex as Magic, however, no system will perfectly account for all the strategies, variables, and deck-building options available to players, let alone the myriad motivations those players have.”
That explanation describes the published design goal, not a promise that every pairing will feel equal and not a client-side repair guide.
Safe steps for a hung queue
- Use the opening service-status check and wait if the service is under maintenance or experiencing an incident.
- Confirm that another part of Arena can connect, or perform the network comparison described above.
- Close and restart the Arena client.
- Check the current known-issues information on Wizards’ support site.
- Contact support with the platform, mode, exact error or screen, approximate time, and whether another network changed the result.
No dedicated, current “reset matchmaking queue” procedure is established in Wizards’ published guidance. Avoid deleting configuration files or repeatedly changing decks as an improvised fix.

Wizards’ advanced connection article lists several reversible tests for persistent PC problems. These are appropriate after basic status, restart, network comparison, and security checks, not as the first response to a routine update delay.

Switching to a public DNS service can test whether name resolution on the current network is involved. Wizards warns that public DNS can cause problems on some corporate networks. Record the original DNS settings, make the change only if you administer the connection, and restore the original values if there is no improvement or other services stop working.

Windows hosts file
Remove custom MTG Arena entries from the Windows hosts file when the advanced guide indicates they may be intercepting service addresses. Do not delete unrelated entries. Because the hosts file affects the whole computer, ask an administrator for help if you do not normally edit system network files.
Port forwarding
The advanced guidance lists TCP ports 80, 443, 30010, and 30003 for forwarding. Router interfaces differ, and forwarding ports exposes a service configuration that should be limited to the necessary device. Do not add rules blindly on a shared or managed network; involve the network administrator and remove the rules if support determines they are unnecessary.
VPN route test
The same article lists trying a United States-based VPN as an advanced diagnostic. A VPN can change routing, but it can also add latency or violate a network’s policy. Treat this as a temporary comparison, not a standing requirement, and stop if it worsens the connection.

Update the computer’s network drivers through the device manufacturer or Windows’ supported update path. Reboot after installation and repeat the same test. Avoid generic “optimizer” utilities that are not recommended by Wizards’ support material.
What to send support so the case moves faster
When the documented steps do not resolve the problem, provide a compact, reproducible report:
- Platform and operating-system version, such as Windows, Mac, iOS, or Android.
- Arena installation route, including the webpage installer or Steam on PC.
- The exact on-screen wording, including “Null Reference” if present.
- Whether the official status page showed an incident or maintenance.
- The approximate date and time, including time zone.
- Whether a restart, another network, wired testing, or a security-setting test changed the result.
- For matchmaking, the mode and whether the queue spins indefinitely, returns an error, or disconnects after finding an opponent.
Never include your password, one-time codes, full payment details, or private recovery links. Restore temporary proxy, VPN, DNS, hosts-file, firewall, and port-forwarding changes unless support specifically tells you to keep one.
Practical prevention
- Keep a note of custom proxy, VPN, DNS, firewall, and hosts-file settings before changing them.
- Keep the client and operating system updated through official channels.
- Use Wi-Fi with a strong signal or Ethernet when diagnosing recurring wireless instability.
- Close high-bandwidth applications before testing a match.
- Save screenshots of new errors and note their time; intermittent failures are easier to correlate with service incidents when documented.
The shortest reliable path back into a match
Check service status, then follow the branch that matches the failure. Recover credentials through Wizards’ account tools; use the proxy procedure only for the named Null Reference update error; clean-install the 64-bit PC client for broader installer failures; and diagnose connection quality with restarts, network comparisons, bandwidth control, and—when appropriate—wired testing. For a queue that still will not start after service and connection checks, use current known-issue information and give support the exact platform, symptom, and time rather than applying undocumented resets.
