A mouse that skips or stutters is usually diagnosable without buying a new mouse. First test whether the fault follows the surface, then clean the sensor, isolate the USB or wireless connection, and finally separate a game-specific problem from a desktop-wide one. Those reversible checks tell you whether to adjust the pad, connection, game settings, or software before you consider support or replacement.
Start with a controlled diagnosis
“Skipping,” “stuttering,” “lag,” and “inconsistent tracking” describe several different faults. A pointer that jumps on the Windows desktop points to a different investigation than aim that feels uneven in one older game. Change one variable at a time so you know which test changed the result.

Use plain white paper as a control
Turn the mouse over only far enough to keep it stable and move it across a clean sheet of plain white paper. Logitech recommends this as a quick way to determine whether the current surface is involved. Test the same movement that normally skips, then compare it with the original pad.

- If tracking becomes smooth on paper, keep the mouse unchanged and investigate the pad or desk surface.
- If it skips identically on paper, continue to the sensor and connection checks rather than buying a new pad immediately.
- If the result is intermittent, repeat the test with slow and fast sweeps; a surface can fail only at particular angles or speeds.
Try another pad and avoid difficult materials
Use a second, clean mouse pad if one is available. Logitech’s general tracking guidance advises avoiding glass or see-through material, mirrors and other reflective surfaces, metal desks, grooved or grainy finishes, and very glossy surfaces. These materials can give an optical sensor an unreliable image even when the sensor itself is healthy.
ZOWIE also advises keeping its pad free of debris. Brush away crumbs, hair, and grit before deciding that the pad is unusable. A replacement pad is justified only when the white-paper or alternate-pad test consistently fixes the symptom. No particular pad type is proven by these troubleshooting instructions to repair a sensor fault.
2. Inspect and clean the sensor and pad safely
Power down first
Switch off a wireless mouse or unplug a wired model before cleaning. Follow the care instructions for the exact model. The cleaning guidance from Logitech identifies a simple possibility: “The sensor lens may be dirty.” Dust or lint over that opening can interrupt the image the sensor uses to calculate movement.

Clean without disassembling
- Disconnect power from the mouse.
- Inspect the sensor opening under good light for lint, dust, or a strand of hair.
- Remove loose debris from the outside of the opening and from the pad. A soft brush or microfiber cloth is optional; it is not a required purchase.
- Reconnect the mouse and repeat the white-paper test before returning to the game.
Do not open the mouse, pour liquid into the sensor opening, or assume that a particular solvent is safe. Logitech and ZOWIE direct users to their model-specific care instructions; those instructions take precedence over generic cleaning advice. If the sensor window is cracked, deeply scratched, or loose, stop cleaning attempts and move to manufacturer support.

3. Isolate the wired or wireless connection
Wired mouse: bypass every hub
Connect the mouse directly to a USB port on the computer. For G502 lag troubleshooting, Logitech specifically recommends avoiding hubs, including powered hubs and monitor hubs. Microsoft’s Windows 10 and Windows 11 guidance likewise recommends unplugging and reconnecting the device, trying another USB port, and removing a hub while testing.
- Unplug the mouse and wait a few seconds.
- Plug it directly into the computer, not into a keyboard, monitor, docking station, or hub.
- Try a second direct port, preferably one on the computer itself rather than an extension.
- Move the cable gently while the pointer is still; a change when the cable bends can indicate cable damage.
- Repeat the same desktop and game movement after each port change.
If one direct port works and another does not, keep using the working port temporarily and investigate the computer’s USB hardware or drivers later. If every direct port behaves the same, continue with the surface, software, and second-computer tests.
Wireless mouse: battery, receiver, and interference
Check the charge level or install known-good batteries before diagnosing radio performance. A low battery can make a wireless mouse appear to lag even when its sensor is clean.
- Charge the mouse fully, or replace its batteries according to the model instructions.
- Place the receiver closer to the mouse. Logitech’s gaming-mouse guidance suggests keeping the receiver within 20 cm of the mouse.
- Temporarily move wireless routers and other 2.4 GHz devices away. The same Logitech guidance suggests keeping the mouse and receiver at least 2 metres from routers and other 2.4 GHz devices.
- Reconnect or re-pair the mouse using the manufacturer’s procedure.
- Repeat the test with the receiver in its new position and with the original position restored, changing only one factor at a time.
The 20 cm and 2 metre distances are Logitech’s practical guidance, not universal engineering limits for every wireless mouse. If moving the receiver or other radios changes the result, keep the improved arrangement and investigate nearby interference before replacing hardware.

4. Determine whether the game is the only place that skips
Compare desktop, menu, and another game
Move the pointer in a browser or on the desktop, then test the game’s menus and a second game if available. If the cursor is inconsistent everywhere, return to the sensor, surface, connection, battery, and hardware branches. If only one title is affected, avoid changing operating-system settings at random; inspect that title first.
Review the affected game’s input settings
Look for options that change mouse input, raw input, acceleration, smoothing, or device selection. Record the original values, change one option, restart the game if it requests it, and repeat the same movement. A setting that fixes the problem in one game does not establish that the mouse is faulty or that the same setting is correct elsewhere.
Close overlays and unnecessary background software
As a diagnostic, close overlays, capture tools, peripheral-control panels, and other background applications that hook mouse input. Test with the game running alone. If the skipping disappears, reopen programs one at a time to identify a conflict. Do not uninstall a driver or utility solely because the symptom appeared after an update; first confirm whether the program is involved by this controlled test.
Consider polling rate only when the device and game support it
Razer’s HyperPolling guidance warns that some older game engines may not handle very high polling-rate devices well. For a supported HyperPolling device, it suggests trying a lower supported polling rate and checking device firmware and the game’s input settings.

This is not a universal fix. Not every mouse offers adjustable polling, and a lower rate is not guaranteed to solve skipping. Apply the advice only when the mouse, its software, and the game support the relevant setting. If lowering the rate changes nothing, restore the previous value and continue with the other branches.

Use the current software for the exact model
Install or open the currently supported device software for your mouse model and check whether it reports a connection, battery, or firmware issue. Logitech notes that its older Firmware Update Tool is no longer maintained; use the current supported software instead of relying on that retired utility.
Do not apply firmware intended for another model, interrupt an update, or treat a firmware prompt as proof that the sensor is damaged. Record the model name and current firmware version before making a change so you can describe the state to support if necessary.

Use Windows’ basic device checks
For Windows 10 or Windows 11, Microsoft’s guidance starts with simple physical isolation: unplug and reconnect the mouse, try another USB port, and remove a hub. Perform those checks before deeper driver changes. If the mouse works on another computer with the same surface and connection, the original computer’s USB, software, or game environment becomes the more likely area to investigate.

6. Run a second-computer test
A second computer is one of the strongest free comparisons because it changes the operating system, USB controller, background applications, and game installation at once. Keep the mouse, its receiver or cable, and the test surface the same.
- Clean the sensor and pad, then note the exact symptom on the original computer.
- Connect the mouse directly to a second computer.
- Test on plain white paper and on the original pad.
- Move the pointer on the desktop before opening any game.
- If possible, test the same game with the same input settings.
Interpret the result rather than treating it as a pass-or-fail test. A fault that follows the mouse to both computers and several surfaces points toward the mouse, cable, receiver, or battery. A fault limited to the original computer points toward its USB path, software, firmware environment, or game configuration. A fault limited to one game on both computers points toward that game or its interaction with the device.
A practical order of operations
Use this checklist when you want the shortest safe route from symptom to cause:

- If the mouse offers the setting and the game is an older engine, test a lower supported polling rate; restore it if there is no improvement.
- Open the current model-specific device software and check supported firmware.
- Repeat the test on another computer.
- Contact the manufacturer when the symptom remains after these comparisons.
Common mistakes that waste time
- Buying a pad first: A pad is a sensible purchase only when paper or another pad consistently improves tracking.
- Cleaning while powered: Disconnect the mouse first and follow its care instructions.
- Testing through the same hub: A hub can preserve the very connection problem you are trying to isolate.
- Changing several settings together: You lose the ability to identify which change helped or hurt.
- Assuming high polling is always better: Some older engines may mishandle very high rates on supported devices; this does not apply to every mouse or game.
- Installing an old updater: Logitech says its older Firmware Update Tool is no longer maintained.
- Calling the sensor defective after one game: A game-only symptom requires an input, overlay, background-software, or polling investigation first.
- Opening the mouse: Disassembly can damage the device and is not required for the basic checks.
When cleaning supplies or a new pad make sense
Basic diagnosis requires no purchase. Use an optional soft brush or microfiber cloth if you already have one and the model’s instructions permit it. Consider a compatible replacement pad only when the current pad fails the white-paper or alternate-pad comparison and the replacement surface solves the problem consistently. The evidence does not establish a particular brand or model as a universal cure, and it does not support replacing the mouse without model-specific findings.
When to contact the manufacturer
Contact support after the sensor and pad are clean, the connection has been isolated, game-specific software has been tested, and the mouse has been tried on another computer. Include the model, operating system, connection type, battery state if wireless, surfaces tested, USB ports or receiver position, games affected, and whether the desktop also skips. This information lets support distinguish a repeatable hardware symptom from an environmental one.
ZOWIE recommends testing another PC and pad, checking for conflicts with other gaming-mouse software, and using warranty support when the issue persists and the product remains in warranty. Logitech likewise directs users to support after its listed checks. These routes are troubleshooting recommendations, not proof that a driver or sensor is defective. Persistent failure on multiple surfaces and another computer makes hardware damage possible, but the checks above cannot identify a universal repair or guarantee a particular component is at fault.
