Start by identifying exactly what you see. For the soap-opera effect, turn the TV’s motion-processing feature off and compare the same scene. For flicker, lines, colored dots, abnormal color, or a persistent defect, run the TV’s built-in Picture Test before buying a cable or changing dozens of settings. A defect that appears in the test points toward the television; a problem limited to one app or HDMI source points toward that source, its cable, or its settings.
First, match the fix to the symptom
“Motion smoothing,” “soap opera effect,” judder, blur, flicker, lines and color errors are different problems. Write down what happens, when it happens, and which source is playing. Check at least one built-in TV app, over-the-air programming if you use it, and each affected external input. That comparison prevents a source problem from being mistaken for a panel fault.

| What you see | Most likely area to check first |
|---|---|
| Films or scripted shows look unnaturally fluid, like live video | Motion-processing setting |
| Roughness during a slow pan or zoom | Judder control, source frame rate, or both |
| Moving objects look fuzzy | Blur-reduction control, source quality, or panel behavior |
| Brightness pulses or the screen flickers | Picture settings, room-light features, cable/source, or a model-specific fault |
| Lines or colorful dots appear | Run Picture Test, then isolate the cable and external device |
| Colors bleed or look abnormal on one HDMI device | HDMI cable, source output, or HDMI color setting |
| Every source looks wrong | Reset picture settings, then run Picture Test |
Why motion smoothing creates the soap-opera effect
A television can generate or repeat frames between the frames supplied by a film, show or game. This motion processing is intended to make fast movement clearer or reduce visible judder. On film and scripted video, however, it can make actors and camera movement look unnaturally immediate and hyper-real. Viewers commonly call that the “soap opera effect.” It is a processing choice, not a repair for every picture defect.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Samsung’s support guidance uses two useful distinctions. Blur Reduction targets moving objects that look fuzzy. Judder Reduction targets rough motion during pans or zooms when the program contains fewer frames than the display. Samsung states, “Judder occurs when your TV show or movie has fewer frames than your TV displays.” Those controls address different complaints, so changing one will not necessarily fix the other.

Samsung gives live programs such as sports or parades filmed at 30 frames per second and most movies filmed at 24 frames per second as contextual examples. They are examples, not a rule for every broadcast or film. Samsung also notes that most movies are not intended to be viewed with its motion-smoothing features enabled.
Turn off or reduce motion processing
Samsung: test Auto Motion Plus or Picture Clarity
- Open Settings.
- Choose Picture.
- Open Expert Settings.
- Select Auto Motion Plus Settings or Picture Clarity Settings; the label depends on the model and software generation.
- Set the feature to Off.
- Replay the same scene that looked artificial. Use an identical scene rather than switching programs, because different content can have different frame rates and compression.
If turning it off removes the soap-opera effect but introduces motion that you find distracting, select Custom instead. Adjust Blur Reduction when moving objects are fuzzy and Judder Reduction when pans or zooms look rough. Change one control at a time and compare the same scene. LED Clear Motion is a separate backlight-related option; it is not the same control as the two sliders.
Some Samsung sets offer an Auto mode that changes motion processing according to the program type. Auto can therefore produce a different appearance from one source or show to another. If you are diagnosing the effect, use Off first, then decide whether a Custom setting is worth keeping.
LG: use TruMotion’s available modes
On supported LG models, open the picture controls and find TruMotion. The cited LG manual lists Off, Smooth, Clear and User modes. In User mode, the controls are De-Judder and De-Blur: De-Judder changes rough camera movement, while De-Blur reduces blur in moving objects.

LG’s manual warns that “The configurable items differ depending upon model.” The available options can change with the TV model, input signal and picture mode, so use the manual for your exact set if TruMotion or its controls are missing. If the picture looks like live video, choose Off first; only re-enable User controls if you specifically want less blur or judder.
How to choose between Off, Auto and Custom
| Setting choice | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Off | You want the original motion character of films and scripted video, or you are testing whether processing causes the soap-opera effect. | Some low-frame-rate content may show more native judder or blur. |
| Auto | You want the TV to vary processing by program type. | The look can change between sources and programs, making diagnosis harder. |
| Custom/User | You want to address blur and judder separately. | Strong settings can restore the artificial look, halos or other processing artifacts. |
Gaming exception: a narrow LG 30-fps case
An LG support article dated July 17, 2026 describes stutter or an afterimage in one situation involving games that output 30 frames per second. Its suggested troubleshooting is to turn off ALLM and use TruMotion where available. TruMotion cannot be selected while TV Game mode is active.
Treat this as a model-, game- and signal-dependent option, not general gaming advice. Game mode and automatic low-latency behavior can be important for input response. If you try the LG procedure, note the original settings, test the same game scene, and restore them if latency or picture quality becomes worse. The general soap-opera procedure remains: identify the symptom, compare the same scene, and change one setting at a time.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRun the built-in Picture Test before changing more settings
For flicker, lines, colored dots, persistent color errors or a defect that appears across sources, use the TV’s own diagnostic image. A Picture Test removes the streaming app, broadcast and HDMI device from the test path. If the defect appears in that test, it points toward the television and should be handled through manufacturer support or qualified service. If the test is clean, investigate the source, cable and input instead.

Samsung Picture Test paths
- On 2022 and later models, use All Settings → Support → Device Care → Self Diagnosis → Picture Test.
- On previous models, use Settings → Support → Self Diagnosis → Picture Test.
Menu names can differ by model and software generation. If your path does not match, search the exact model manual for “Picture Test” rather than guessing at a different service menu.
Fix a flickering picture
Start with the test and the simplest isolation steps
- Run Picture Test.
- Note whether flicker appears in the test, in the TV’s built-in apps, or only on one external source.
- If it is source-specific, try another input or app and inspect the source device and its cable.
- Check the TV’s energy or room-light features. Samsung says Eco Solution features can change brightness in response to room lighting or scene changes.
- If several devices are connected to the same electrical circuit, temporarily isolate the TV and source devices as Samsung suggests, then compare the result.
A model- and software-specific Samsung exception
Samsung identifies flicker when LED Clear Motion is enabled on 2018 QLED televisions running software version 1270.6. For that specific combination, its guidance is to turn LED Clear Motion off while waiting for an update. This exception does not establish a general flicker fault on other models or software versions. Do not apply the model-specific conclusion broadly without checking your model and version.
Fix lines or colorful dots
- Run the Picture Test using the Samsung path for your model.
- If lines or dots appear in the test, stop treating the HDMI cable as the primary fix and request manufacturer service.
- If the test is clean, return to the source that shows the defect.
- Replace that external device’s cable first, as Samsung recommends.
- If the lines remain with a replacement cable, troubleshoot the external device or its output. Compare another device on the same TV input if possible.
A defect that is present in the TV’s own test is materially different from a line that appears only when one set-top box, console or player is connected. The former needs a service path; the latter needs source and signal-path checks.

Correct HDMI-source color and cable problems
Use the TV’s HDMI cable test when available
Samsung’s HDMI test is designed for cables shorter than 2 metres. Results may not be reliable for longer cables. If the TV identifies a cable issue, replace that cable and retest the same source. This is a targeted replacement, not a reason to buy a new cable for motion smoothing, judder or an internal panel fault.

Check LG HDMI Ultra HD Deep Color for abnormal color
When a set-top box produces color bleeding or abnormal colors, LG advises checking HDMI Ultra HD Deep Color if the option exists on your model. Use On for a source that supports 4K at 3840 × 2160. Use Off for HD at 1920 × 1080 or lower. The exact setting location and availability vary by model. Change it for the affected HDMI input, then restart or reconnect the source if the TV does not immediately resync.

Reset Samsung picture settings
If color, contrast or processing settings have accumulated into an unexplained result, Samsung provides Reset Picture at All Settings → Picture → Expert Settings → Reset Picture. Record any intentional calibration or accessibility changes first; resetting removes those picture adjustments. Afterward, test the same content before re-enabling optional processing.
Do not treat Film mode as a universal motion fix
Samsung’s Film mode guidance applies only to specific older input types and resolutions: TV, AV, Component 480i/1080i and HDMI 1080i. It is not a universal solution for modern streaming motion, every HDMI signal or every judder complaint. If the option is unavailable, that can simply reflect the current input signal.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A complete troubleshooting sequence
- Name the symptom. Decide whether it is artificial smoothness, rough pans, fuzzy moving objects, flicker, lines or dots, abnormal color, or a problem limited to one source.
- Compare sources. Check a built-in app, broadcast and external input where applicable. Note exactly where the defect appears.
- For the soap-opera effect, turn motion processing Off. Replay the identical scene. If the result is preferable, leave it off.
- If motion is still a problem, use the relevant custom control. Choose Blur Reduction or De-Blur for fuzzy movement; choose Judder Reduction or De-Judder for rough pans and zooms.
- For flicker, lines, dots or persistent defects, run Picture Test. Do this before purchasing parts.
- If the test is clean, isolate the source. Try another app or input, inspect the device output and run the available HDMI test. Replace a cable only when those checks indicate cable trouble.
- If the defect appears in the test, contact the manufacturer or qualified service. A generic cable, streaming utility or motion setting cannot repair an internal panel fault.
- Use the exact model manual. Samsung and LG labels, menu paths and available controls vary with model, input signal, picture mode and software generation.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Changing every setting at once: You lose the ability to identify which control changed the result. Keep a note and alter one item at a time.
- Using motion smoothing to cure lines or color errors: Motion controls do not repair a bad HDMI signal or a panel defect.
- Replacing a cable before testing: A cable is justified when the problem is source-specific or the TV’s HDMI test identifies it, not as a general cure for judder or soap-opera effect.
- Assuming a clean app proves the panel is healthy: Run the built-in Picture Test for a persistent defect; an app may simply be using a different signal path.
- Applying a model-specific exception to every TV: The 2018 QLED/1270.6 LED Clear Motion flicker guidance is explicitly narrow.
- Ignoring input mode: LG TruMotion may be unavailable in TV Game mode, and Film mode options can disappear when the input resolution does not match the supported cases.
When to stop troubleshooting and request service
Request manufacturer support or qualified service when lines, colorful dots, flicker or another defect appears in the TV’s own Picture Test, or when the same fault remains across multiple known-good sources and cables. Have the model number, software version, affected input, test result and a description of when the problem occurs ready for support. Do not open the television to investigate a suspected panel fault unless you are trained and authorized to do so.
If the Picture Test is clean and only one HDMI source fails, continue with that device’s output settings, cable and firmware support. If only one app fails while other sources are clean, the app or its stream is the relevant branch rather than the television’s motion hardware.
