For an unnaturally smooth, video-like “soap opera” look, lower or disable Motion Smoothing or Action Smoothing and reduce Judder Reduction. For jerky camera pans, raise Judder Reduction gradually. For blur during sports or other fast action, try a small increase in Blur Reduction or Motion Clarity if your model offers it. Change one control at a time while watching the same scene, because smoothing, clarity modes, brightness, and input lag involve different trade-offs.
TCL uses different menu names and paths on Google TV, Roku TV, and Fire TV models. Some controls are model- or software-dependent, and a problem limited to one app, HDMI input, console, or streaming box may originate at the source rather than in the television.

| What you see | First adjustment to try | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Movies look unnaturally smooth or like live video | Lower or turn off Motion Smoothing, Action Smoothing, or similar processing. Lower Judder Reduction if it is separate. | More cinematic motion, but possibly more visible judder in 24-frame-per-second film. |
| Slow camera pans stutter or jump | Raise Judder Reduction or Motion Smoothing a little at a time; low to medium is a reasonable starting range in TCL’s general guidance. | Stop when the pan is acceptable. Higher values can create halos, warped edges, or a video-like look. |
| Players, cars, or a ball smear during fast action | Try a modest increase in Blur Reduction or Motion Clarity, if available. | LED Motion or backlight-strobing options can reduce perceived blur but may dim the picture or flicker for some viewers. |
| Faint trails, double images, or ghosting | Compare several scenes and sources before changing multiple controls. | There is no single guaranteed setting for every cause. Determine whether the artifact follows the content, app, or input. |
TCL’s official troubleshooting language groups blur, judder or stutter, the soap-opera effect, and double images among motion complaints that can often be improved by adjusting or resetting motion controls. Its exact statement is: “Most of these can be improved by adjusting or resetting motion controls on your TV.”

Use a controlled comparison before settling on a setting
- Choose a scene that exposes the problem: a slow pan for judder, a film dialogue scene for the soap-opera effect, or a fast sports play for blur.
- Pause other picture changes. Keep brightness, contrast, color, and sharpness fixed while comparing motion.
- Change only one motion control by one step, then replay the same few seconds.
- Check a second scene and a second type of content. A setting that helps a 24-fps film may not be ideal for live sports or a 60-fps game.
- Record the values you prefer for each input or picture mode. TCL sets can retain different settings for different inputs, and a change made while watching one source may not affect another.
Find motion controls on your TCL platform
The labels below are common examples, not universal paths. TCL says picture options can vary by model and software version. If an item is missing, your model may use another name, place it in a different submenu, or not support that feature.
Google TV
- Press the Settings button or open the gear icon.
- Open Picture.
- Choose Advanced Settings (sometimes shown as Advanced).
- Open Motion or Motion Clarity.
- Adjust Judder Reduction for pan smoothness and the available blur or motion-clarity control for fast action.
Google TV models may expose a master motion-smoothing control plus separate Judder Reduction and Blur Reduction values. If you cannot find Motion, select the active picture mode first; some options are hidden or limited in particular modes.
Roku TV
- Start the program or video that shows the problem.
- Press the Star (*) button on the Roku remote.
- Open Picture settings, then Advanced picture settings.
- Look for Action Smoothing and, on supported models, LED Motion Clarity or LED Motion.
Roku’s on-screen controls are tied to the current input and picture mode. An Action Smoothing value selected for one HDMI device may not be the value used by a built-in app or another HDMI port.
Fire TV
- Open Settings.
- Choose Display & Sounds, then Picture.
- Open Advanced Settings, Expert Settings, or a menu labeled Motion, depending on the model.
- Adjust the available smoothing, judder, blur, or motion-clarity controls while the problem scene is playing.
Fire TV labels vary particularly widely between models and software revisions. If the control is absent, use the exact model’s TCL guide rather than assuming the television is defective.

Fix the soap-opera effect without losing every motion option
The soap-opera effect is the overly fluid, video-like appearance that is most noticeable in films and scripted television. It is caused by interpolation or smoothing rather than by a blurry panel.
- Set the picture mode to Movie or Cinema and replay the same film scene.
- Turn Motion Smoothing or Action Smoothing down one step at a time, or switch it off.
- If Judder Reduction is separate, reduce it as well. Keep Blur Reduction separate unless fast-action blur is also a problem.
- Check a different film and a live program. Some viewers prefer a small amount of smoothing for sports even when they disable it for movies.
TCL describes Movie/Cinema as closer to the original film presentation, while Sports may apply more motion smoothing. Neither preset is universally best: compare the same scene on your set and keep the mode that matches your preference.
Reduce judder on slow pans
Judder is uneven motion, especially when a camera moves slowly across a scene. Film commonly uses 24 frames per second, while other video may use 30, 60, or 120 frames per second. A television must display those frames at its own refresh timing, and the conversion can make pans look uneven. Content quality and the source device can contribute as well.

A single poorly encoded stream can mimic a television problem.
- Open the platform-specific Motion menu.
- Increase Judder Reduction or the main Motion Smoothing control by one increment.
- Replay the pan and check for halos, bending around moving objects, or a new soap-opera effect.
- Stop at the lowest value that makes the pan acceptable. TCL’s low-to-medium suggestion is a starting range, not a calibrated setting for every panel.
If judder appears only from a set-top box, disc player, or console, check that device’s output resolution and refresh-rate options before increasing TV processing. A source may be outputting an unsuitable mode or converting frame rates poorly.

Handle blur in sports and other fast action
Blur can come from the display’s response, the camera shutter, the source stream, or motion processing. A clarity feature may improve perceived detail, but it cannot restore detail that was never present in a low-quality stream.
Try Blur Reduction or Motion Clarity
Increase Blur Reduction or Motion Clarity slightly if your TCL exposes it. Watch a moving player, puck, ball, or vehicle rather than a static logo. Stop when detail improves without producing obvious strobing, flicker, or darkening.
Understand LED Motion trade-offs
LED Motion and related backlight-strobing modes insert dark intervals to make moving edges appear sharper. TCL notes that these features can reduce brightness. They may also be uncomfortable for viewers sensitive to flicker. If the picture becomes too dim, disable the feature and use ordinary blur reduction or a brighter picture mode instead.
Do not over-sharpen the picture
Increasing the Sharpness control does not fix motion blur. It can add bright outlines and noise around moving objects. Leave sharpness unchanged while testing motion controls so you can tell whether the motion setting itself helped.

Check whether the app or external device is responsible
A useful dividing test is to play a similar scene in a built-in TV app and through the affected HDMI device. If the built-in app looks normal but one box, console, or player does not, the television may be processing both signals correctly and the fault is upstream.
If only one app looks wrong
- Play another title in the same app to rule out a bad stream or encode.
- Try the same type of content in another app.
- Close and reopen the app.
- On Fire TV, clear the app’s cache or data if those options are available in the system menus; clearing data may sign you out.
- Check the app and TV for software updates.
If only one HDMI source looks wrong
- Check the source device’s output resolution and refresh rate. For a console or PC, verify that the selected mode is supported by both the device and the TV.
- Disable source-side motion processing if the player, receiver, or streaming box has its own frame interpolation.
- Unplug and reseat the HDMI cable at both ends.
- Try another HDMI input. TCL notes that picture and motion settings can be stored per input, so verify the settings again after moving the cable.
- For 4K or higher-frame-rate content, use a High Speed or Ultra High Speed HDMI cable appropriate to the required signal.
A higher-speed cable is a conditional compatibility check, not a universal cure. It will not correct poor streaming quality, incorrect frame-rate settings, or the TV’s interpolation choices when the existing connection is already carrying the signal reliably.
Use Game Mode for interactive sources
Games need quick response rather than film-style interpolation. Enable Game Mode for the input connected to a console or PC when responsiveness and low input lag matter. Game Mode can change image processing and may disable or alter some motion controls.

- Open the input’s picture settings and enable Game Mode.
- Confirm the console or PC output resolution and refresh rate.
- Test a game that felt delayed or smeared. Do not treat TV motion smoothing as a blanket fix for interactive gameplay; it can add processing delay or artifacts.
- If films from the same HDMI device look different, remember that the input may retain its own picture-mode values. Set movie and game preferences deliberately rather than assuming one change applies everywhere.
Picture presets are part of the motion decision
Presets can change several processing choices at once, so they are useful as a quick comparison but poor substitutes for symptom-based adjustment.

| Preset or approach | When to try it | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Movie/Cinema | Films and scripted programs where natural motion is the priority. | May reveal more native 24-fps judder than a heavily smoothed mode. |
| Sports | Live sports when you prefer smoother movement. | May apply more smoothing and can introduce artifacts. |
| Standard or another general mode | As a neutral comparison for mixed content. | Behavior differs by model; it is not a guaranteed compromise. |
| Game Mode | Console and PC play where input response matters. | Can change or limit motion processing and other picture controls. |
What to do about double images and ghosting
Ghosting can mean several different things: a faint trail behind a moving object, duplicated edges from frame processing, a source problem, or a display fault. Because the cause is not identifiable from the symptom alone, avoid changing every picture control at once.
- Pause the video and inspect whether the duplicate edge moves with the subject or remains fixed relative to the screen.
- Compare a built-in app, another app, and an HDMI source.
- Turn motion processing down or off temporarily. If the double edge disappears, reintroduce the lowest useful setting.
- Check the source output mode and cable if the artifact occurs only on one input.
- If the same ghosting appears across menus and multiple sources after a reset, document the model, input, content, and settings before contacting TCL support.
Reset picture settings only after testing
Changing several controls can leave you unsure which setting caused a worse picture. TCL’s Fire TV guidance recommends resetting picture settings when many changes have made the image worse, then adjusting again slowly.
- Use the picture menu’s reset option for the affected picture mode or input.
- Replay the original test scene.
- Set the desired preset first.
- Adjust only the motion control related to the symptom.
- Recheck brightness after enabling or disabling LED Motion, because backlight-strobing clarity modes may reduce it.
Power-cycle the TV and check for a system update later in the troubleshooting process, after source and picture checks. A reboot can clear a temporary software state, but it will not make a low-quality stream sharper or change an unsupported panel capability.

Choose settings by the trade-off you actually value
There is no universal “best” motion value. Make the choice using the priority that matters for the content in front of you.
- Natural film motion: Movie/Cinema mode with Motion Smoothing and Judder Reduction low or off.
- Smoother pans: A low-to-medium Judder Reduction value, increased only until the pan looks even.
- Fast-action detail: A small Blur Reduction or Motion Clarity increase, with LED Motion enabled only if the brightness and flicker trade-off is acceptable.
- Lowest gaming delay: Game Mode, with source output settings checked before experimenting with motion processing.
- Reliable external playback: Correct source resolution and refresh rate, a sound HDMI connection, and a suitable High Speed or Ultra High Speed cable when the signal requires it.
When settings will not solve the problem
Stop treating the issue as a motion-setting problem when it persists across multiple apps, inputs, and menus, or when static on-screen elements also show trails. Record the exact TCL model, software version, input, source output mode, picture preset, and motion values. That information helps TCL support distinguish panel behavior from a source, cable, or software issue.
