Why YouTube thumbnails are missing right now
On September 27, 2026, TeamYouTube acknowledged an issue in which people scrolling YouTube’s mobile Home, Subscriptions, and profile feeds could see blank or black gaps, gray boxes, or missing thumbnails, posts, and Shorts. The notice covers both Android and iOS apps. Some users reported that installing the latest YouTube update restored the missing artwork, but TeamYouTube said it was still working on the problem. The notice does not specify a minimum app version and does not say that every device is fixed.
That means a phone can have a fast connection and still show empty image areas. Thumbnail-only failures do not prove that your internet service is slow, and they do not necessarily indicate a damaged account.

Do not confuse it with the September 7 incident
On September 7, a separate incident, reported primarily in Texas, affected thumbnails in Home, Shorts, and You and also involved a YouTube TV black screen. TeamYouTube marked that event fixed and suggested trying a secondary connection or mobile hotspot while it was investigating. That resolution does not establish that the newer September 27 mobile-feed issue is fixed.

Fix missing YouTube thumbnails in order
Follow these steps in sequence. The first workaround is the one TeamYouTube specifically mentioned for the current thumbnail problem.

1. Update YouTube
On iPhone or iPad: Open the App Store, tap your profile picture, scroll to available updates, find YouTube, and tap Update. If YouTube is not listed, pull down on the updates screen to refresh it.
On Android: Open Google Play, tap your profile picture, choose Manage apps & device, open the available-updates list, find YouTube, and tap Update. You can also search for YouTube in Google Play and use the Update button on its app page.

Reopen YouTube after the installation completes and check the feed that was failing. An update helped some people in TeamYouTube’s report, but it is not guaranteed to resolve every device while the incident remains active.

2. Close and reopen the app
Leave the affected feed, open your phone’s app switcher, swipe YouTube away, and launch it again. Scroll through Home, Subscriptions, and your profile feed rather than checking only one cached row.

3. Restart the phone or tablet
Power the device off using its normal power menu, wait briefly, turn it on, and open YouTube after the operating system has finished loading. This clears a temporary app or networking state without changing your account, subscriptions, or playlists.

4. Try the other connection
If you are on Wi-Fi, briefly test mobile data. If you are on mobile data, connect to a trusted Wi-Fi network. Check the same feed on both routes and note whether the symptom changes. This is a diagnostic comparison, not proof that slow internet is the cause of a thumbnail-only failure.

5. Clear YouTube’s cache on Android
Android’s menu wording varies by manufacturer and version. Usually open Settings, choose Apps (or Apps & notifications), select YouTube, tap Storage or Storage & cache, and choose Clear cache. Do not select a data-wiping option unless you understand its effect and have a reason to reset the app. Relaunch YouTube and test the affected feeds.

6. Compare the app with a browser or another device
Open youtube.com in a mobile or desktop browser and check the same account and feed. If possible, test another supported device. Record whether thumbnails fail only in the app, only on one device, or across several devices and accounts. YouTube’s Android troubleshooting guidance recommends trying another supported device when problems persist.
For continued failures, use YouTube’s in-app Help and feedback flow. Include your device model, operating-system version, YouTube app version, affected feed (Home, Subscriptions, profile, or Shorts), the time you noticed the problem, and whether Wi-Fi and mobile data behaved differently.

What not to do
- Do not treat reinstalling as a guaranteed fix. The current TeamYouTube notice and the cited Android guidance do not establish reinstalling as the remedy for this thumbnail symptom.
- Do not change DNS settings just for this report. No official source cited for the incident recommends that step.
- Do not delete account history, playlists, or subscriptions. Those actions are unrelated to the documented troubleshooting sequence and can remove data you intended to keep.
- Do not buy a new phone, router, hotspot, or cleaning utility. The documented remediation is software troubleshooting and feedback, not replacement hardware.
If thumbnails are still blank
Keep the app updated and check the TeamYouTube issue thread for a later status change because the resolution state can change. If the browser works but the app remains broken, submit the detailed report described above. If several devices or accounts show the same gaps, include that scope in your report; it can help distinguish a broad service problem from a single-device problem.

If the issue disappears after an update or restart, watch more than one feed before assuming it is completely resolved. The September 27 notice did not publish a minimum fixed version or a universal resolution statement.

When to contact YouTube
Use in-app Help and feedback after updating, restarting, testing another connection, and (on Android) clearing the cache. A useful report states exactly what was blank, when it happened, your app and operating-system versions, your device, the affected feeds, and the result on Wi-Fi, mobile data, a browser, and another device. That information is more useful than reporting only that “YouTube is broken.”
