How to Fix Missing Surround Sound or Weak Bass on a Sony BRAVIA Theatre System

Start by identifying the exact Theatre model, the source you are playing, and whether the rear speakers connect to the Theatre bar/system or directly to the BRAVIA TV. Quiet rears and subtle bass are often normal when a program has little surround or low-frequency content. Raise the rear or subwoofer level, turn Night mode off, complete Sound Field Optimization where available, and run the system’s test tone or demo. If the test works but ordinary programs remain quiet, the source or sound-field mode is the likely cause; if the test also fails, follow the wireless and connection checks below.

Identify your system before changing settings

Sony uses different menus and controls across BRAVIA Theatre products. Do not assume that a setting shown for one model exists on another. Find the model number on the bar, control box, or its original packaging, then check whether the optional speakers are linked to the Theatre system or paired directly with the television.

Connection type What it means First checks
Speakers linked to the Theatre bar or system The bar/system manages rear channels and, where fitted, the subwoofer. Rear or subwoofer level, Night mode, Sound Field Optimization, test tone, wireless link and placement.
Optional speakers connected directly to a compatible BRAVIA TV over Wi-Fi The television controls whether wireless-speaker audio is enabled; the Theatre bar may not be the path for every channel. Speaker power, wireless-speaker output in BRAVIA settings, and subwoofer power if rear audio is routed through it.

The model distinction matters because Theatre Quad (HT-A9M2), Theatre Bar 9 (HT-A9000), Bar 8 (HT-A8000), Bar 7 (HT-A7100), Theatre Trio (HT-A8), Theatre System 6 (HT-S60), HT-A7000, HT-A5000, HT-A3000 and HT-S2000 do not share one universal control layout. The names and paths below are branches, not instructions that apply to every system.

Why rear speakers or bass can sound missing

Rear channels follow the program mix

Rear speakers reproduce multichannel surround when the source supplies those channels. Sony also describes them as being virtually processed from two-channel sound in some modes. A film with a discrete surround mix can send obvious effects behind you, while dialogue-heavy television, stereo music, news, or a quiet scene may leave the rears nearly silent. That behavior alone does not prove a speaker has failed.

Low bass depends on the source

A subwoofer can be working even when its contribution is difficult to hear. Programs with limited low-frequency information, small speakers mixed conservatively, or scenes without impacts will produce less bass than an action sequence or a bass-rich demo. Compare several known surround-rich and bass-rich sources before diagnosing hardware.

Sound-field processing changes what is sent to each speaker

Some source and sound-field combinations do not send audio to every speaker. A test tone can therefore be more useful than a familiar program: it separates a speaker or link problem from the content and processing choices of that program. Certain formats, including some Dolby Atmos sources, may force particular processing settings.

Run this diagnostic sequence first

  1. Write down the model number and connection arrangement. Note whether the optional speakers and subwoofer are linked through the Theatre system or directly to the TV.
  2. Test more than one source. Use one known multichannel or surround-rich movie or demo and one ordinary two-channel or dialogue-heavy program. If the rears are active in the first but quiet in the second, the difference is probably the mix rather than a fault.
  3. Raise the affected level. On compatible models, adjust Rear level in the BRAVIA Connect app. On other models, use the rear-speaker volume buttons on the remote. For a subwoofer, use the model’s subwoofer or volume-level control rather than increasing the master volume alone.
  4. Turn Night mode off. Dynamic-range reduction can make effects and bass seem restrained. Recheck the same scene after disabling it.
  5. Complete Sound Field Optimization if your model offers it. The procedure measures the system’s environment and speaker positions; an incomplete or outdated optimization can make the balance seem wrong.
  6. Play the built-in test tone, sound-output check, or demo. Listen at a moderate level and confirm each rear speaker and the subwoofer can produce sound independently of the program you were watching.
  7. Only then investigate wireless interference or a direct-to-TV setting. These checks matter when output cuts out, crackles, or disappears even during the built-in test.

Restore rear or surround output

Adjust Rear level and disable Night mode

On compatible Theatre systems, open the BRAVIA Connect app and increase Rear level under the sound controls. Other models provide dedicated rear-speaker volume buttons on the remote. Make a small change, replay the same passage, and avoid judging the result from a different scene.

Turn Night mode off while troubleshooting. It is intended for listening at lower disturbance levels and can reduce the contrast of loud effects and bass. Once the system is behaving normally, you can re-enable it if you prefer its quieter presentation.

Complete Sound Field Optimization

For Theatre Quad (HT-A9M2), Theatre Bar 9 (HT-A9000), Bar 8 (HT-A8000), Bar 7 (HT-A7100) and Theatre Trio (HT-A8), Sony places the function in BRAVIA Connect:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Sound Settings.
  3. Select Sound Field Optimization.
  4. Follow the on-screen positioning and measurement instructions until the process reports completion.

Other models use the remote menu path HOME → Setup → Advanced Settings → Speaker Settings → Sound Field Optimization. Theatre System 6 (HT-S60) does not have this setting, so do not search for it or treat its absence as an error.

Keep speakers in their intended listening positions during optimization. If you move a rear speaker, bar, or subwoofer substantially, run the available optimization again before comparing levels.

Use a test tone or sound-output check

On the newer Theatre models listed above, BRAVIA Connect places the check at Settings → Sound Settings → Sound Output Check. Start it with the room quiet and confirm that each speaker produces the expected tone. The exact path differs on Theatre System 6, HT-S2000 and other products; use that model’s Help Guide rather than applying the newer app path by guesswork.

A working test tone changes the diagnosis. It shows that the speaker and its basic link can produce audio, so a quiet normal program points toward the source mix or sound-field selection. A silent or intermittent test tone points toward power, pairing, wireless conditions, a setting that disables the speaker, or a hardware problem that requires model-specific support.

Choose a mode that uses the surround speakers

If the test tone works but normal content does not use the rears, check the applicable surround-effect control:

  • BRAVIA Connect-compatible models: enable or select Sound Field in the app.
  • HT-A7000: use Immersive Audio Enhancement when you want the system to expand suitable content beyond its original channels.
  • HT-A5000 and HT-A3000: check Sound Field Effect.
  • Theatre System 6 (HT-S60): use Multi Stereo when you want stereo content reproduced through multiple speakers.

Do not expect every mode to produce identical output. A mode may preserve the source’s original channel layout, while another creates a virtual or expanded field. Compare the same passage after each change, and note which setting is active before deciding that a speaker is faulty.

Fix weak subwoofer or bass output

Confirm that the program contains bass

Start with a known bass-rich scene, music track, or built-in demo rather than a quiet dialogue scene. Compare the result with at least one other source. If the subwoofer is audible in the test or demo but subtle in one program, the source’s low-frequency mix is the explanation.

Optimize the system and adjust the subwoofer level

For HT-A7000, HT-A5000 and HT-A3000, Sony recommends completing Sound Field Optimization before judging bass balance. The measurement accounts for the system’s arrangement, so a placement change can alter the result.

For HT-S2000, Sony gives this BRAVIA Connect route for the subwoofer setting: Settings → Sound Settings → Speaker position and volume level settings → Volume level. Adjust the subwoofer level gradually and replay the same test passage. Other models may expose a differently named control on the remote or in the app; confirm the path in the model Help Guide instead of assuming the HT-S2000 route applies.

Use the subwoofer test output

Run the built-in test tone or demo music and listen close enough to verify output without placing your ear directly against the unit. Check that the subwoofer is powered and that its status indicator, if your model has one, shows a normal connection. If the demo produces bass but your program does not, return to the source and sound-field checks; increasing the level further may only make bass-heavy content overpowering later.

Diagnose wireless dropouts, crackle and intermittent bass

When rear or subwoofer output cuts in and out, becomes noisy, or returns after restarting the system, treat it as a wireless-link problem until the test tone proves otherwise.

  1. Verify power. Confirm the bar/system, each optional speaker and the subwoofer are connected to power and remain on during the test. A speaker that powers down or loses its link cannot reproduce a channel regardless of the source.
  2. Remove obstructions. Clear furniture, cabinets and other objects that sit between the bar/system and the wireless speakers. Do not hide a speaker or its wireless receiver behind equipment while troubleshooting.
  3. Move away from electromagnetic sources. Temporarily separate the Theatre equipment from devices that emit electromagnetic waves and retest. This is especially useful when noise appears only at certain times or after another device is switched on.
  4. Bring the bar and optional speaker closer. A short-distance test helps distinguish range or obstruction from a speaker fault. If the link becomes stable nearby, restore distance gradually while keeping a clear path.
  5. Set wireless playback quality to “Priority on Stable Connection” where supported. This favors reliability over the alternative quality setting and is appropriate for dropouts during normal listening.
  6. Try the RF Channel control if your system has one. Sony’s guidance is to toggle RF Channel off and on; if the symptom remains, try leaving it off. Apply this only when the setting exists on your model.
  7. Use the app’s wireless optimization setting when available. Supported BRAVIA Connect or Home Entertainment Connect systems may expose the equivalent wireless-connection optimization control. Newer models can use their own Wireless Channel controls, so follow the exact Help Guide wording.

After each wireless change, run the test tone again rather than relying only on a program. A stable tone from every speaker confirms that the link is behaving at that moment; repeat the test for several minutes if the failure is intermittent.

If the optional speakers connect directly to the BRAVIA TV

Some supported configurations pair optional speakers to the television over Wi-Fi instead of routing them through the Theatre bar/system. In that arrangement, a perfectly functioning bar cannot compensate for a disabled TV wireless-speaker output.

  1. Confirm each optional speaker is switched on and has completed its wireless connection.
  2. Open the BRAVIA Connect remote screen or the TV’s Quick Settings and enable the wireless-speaker audio-output option.
  3. If a subwoofer is also connected, verify its power and link. Sony notes that rear-speaker audio can route through the subwoofer in this arrangement, so an unpowered subwoofer can affect what you hear from the rears.
  4. Test a surround-rich source and then the TV’s speaker test or demo, if available. A quiet two-channel source may still produce little rear activity even after the TV output is enabled.

Do not apply a Theatre-bar menu path to a direct-to-TV setup. The TV’s firmware and the exact speaker model determine which Quick Settings or remote-screen labels are available.

How to tell configuration behavior from a failed component

Use the result of the built-in test as the dividing line:

  • Test tone and demo are clear, but one program is quiet: check that program’s channel mix, the selected sound field and whether Night mode is enabled.
  • All programs are quiet, but the test tone works: verify Rear level or subwoofer level, rerun optimization and select the applicable surround-effect mode.
  • The test tone is silent from one speaker: verify power, placement, wireless settings and the correct direct-to-TV output option before assuming hardware failure.
  • The test tone is intermittent or noisy: treat it as a wireless or interference issue; use the stable-connection setting, RF or Wireless Channel options and a closer, unobstructed placement.
  • A speaker remains silent after these checks: record the exact model, connection type, settings changed and test result, then use Sony’s model-specific Help Guide or support channel. A generic reset or menu path can erase useful configuration information and may not address the underlying link.

A reliable retest routine

Once you change a setting, keep the comparison controlled. Use the same source, scene, listening position and master volume. First run the test tone, then a known surround-rich passage, then an ordinary two-channel or dialogue-heavy passage. Record whether each rear speaker and the subwoofer is audible in all three cases. This three-way comparison shows whether the change affected the hardware link, the source-dependent mix, or only the processing mode.

Quiet rear speakers are not automatically defective, and a subtle subwoofer is not automatically disconnected. The decisive evidence is whether the system can produce the channel in its own test output and whether that output remains stable after power, placement and wireless checks. Keep the exact model and connection arrangement in view whenever you follow a menu instruction.
