How to Fix Missing Radio Audio or Music Playback in GTA 6 (GTA VI)

If GTA 6 has dialogue and sound effects but no radio music, start with the audio path rather than assuming the game is broken: check the in-game music and station controls, confirm the active output device, and make sure stereo or surround settings match your speakers. A surround mismatch can send radio music to a center channel that a two-speaker setup cannot reproduce.

Rockstar’s support index, reviewed on October 16, 2026, does not list a GTA VI-specific article confirming a missing-radio bug or an official fix. The steps below use Rockstar’s documented audio guidance and clearly label older GTA V and San Andreas examples as precedents, not proof of a GTA VI defect.

What is actually confirmed about silent radio in GTA 6?

Rockstar has not published a GTA VI-specific support article explaining missing radio audio or music playback in the support index reviewed October 16, 2026. That means there is no confirmed GTA VI bug signature, universal workaround, or platform-specific fix to apply automatically.

Rockstar has documented similar audio behavior in older games. In a San Andreas support case, it explained that vehicle radio music can be routed to the center speaker when a PC is configured for 5.1-or-greater surround sound. With only two speakers connected, “there is no channel through which the music can be heard.” Rockstar’s fix was to make the speaker configuration match the attached hardware.

Rockstar has also said that missing audio in GTAV Enhanced can involve audio drivers, the audio device, or the sound device, and that stereo speakers should not be configured as 5.1. Separately, Rockstar acknowledged an Xbox Series X|S issue in GTAV/Online in which licensed music could disappear during Party Chat. That is useful diagnostic precedent, but it is not confirmation that GTA VI has the same defect.

Identify the exact symptom before changing settings

The pattern matters more than the fact that the radio is silent. Use this table to choose the least disruptive test first.

What you hear Most relevant area to check What the symptom suggests
No game audio at all Console or PC output device, mute state, receiver or headset connection The problem is probably broader than radio playback.
Dialogue and effects work, but radio music is absent Music volume, station selection, channel configuration and output path Music may be muted, unselected or routed to an inaudible channel.
Only vehicle radio is silent Station selection and the game’s radio or music controls The game may be on an empty or muted station state rather than losing all audio.
Music returns through a headset TV, receiver, speaker wiring, channel mapping or the original sound device The game is producing audio; the original output path needs inspection.
Licensed music disappears only during Xbox Party Chat Leave Party Chat, restart the game and compare This matches a documented GTAV precedent, not a confirmed GTA VI diagnosis.

Do not change several unrelated settings at once. A controlled test—one setting, one restart, one comparison—makes it possible to identify which part of the chain is responsible.

Step 1: Check GTA 6’s music, radio and station state

Confirm music and radio volume

Open the game’s audio settings and verify that music or radio volume is above zero. Also check for a separate mute option. Menu wording and exact control names for GTA VI have not been published in the reviewed Rockstar index, so treat these as functional checks rather than guaranteed labels.

Raise the music slider temporarily to a clearly audible level and test while driving. If effects and dialogue are already audible, changing master volume alone is unlikely to solve a music-only problem; inspect the dedicated music or radio control as well.

Switch stations manually

Change to another station, wait several seconds, then switch back. Rockstar’s older radio guidance specifically tells players to switch stations and ensure that a station is selected. A station-selection state can be different from a global radio mute, so perform both checks.

Test more than one vehicle or gameplay context

If radio is silent in one vehicle, test another vehicle and another location. This does not prove a software bug, but it separates a vehicle-specific state from an output problem affecting every sound source. Keep notes about whether menu music, ambient music and vehicle radio behave differently.

Step 2: Verify where the console or PC is sending sound

Audio can be generated correctly by the game and still be inaudible because the system is using a disconnected or muted output. Confirm the active destination—television speakers, AV receiver, powered speakers, monitor, USB headset or wireless headset—and make sure that destination is powered and selected.

Use a second output as a comparison

On a console, compare the normal television or receiver output with a connected stereo headset if your platform supports that switch. On a PC, compare the current speakers with a headset or another known-working output. You are not testing whether GTA VI requires a particular headset; you are isolating the output path.

If all audio—including dialogue and effects—fails on both outputs, concentrate on system mute, the selected device and the game’s master volume. If effects and dialogue work on one output but radio music appears only on another, investigate channel mapping and speaker configuration next.

Check external equipment

  • Confirm the television, receiver, monitor or speakers are not muted independently of the game.
  • Verify the receiver is on the input carrying the console or PC signal.
  • Reseat HDMI, optical, USB or headset connections and test the same connection with another application.
  • If a soundbar or receiver has its own stereo, surround or dialogue-enhancement mode, temporarily use its ordinary stereo mode for comparison.

These checks do not establish a GTA VI-specific cause; they eliminate the most common places where a valid game audio signal becomes inaudible.

Step 3: Match stereo and surround settings to the hardware

A channel mismatch is the most important documented explanation for “effects work, music does not.” Rockstar states that, in its San Andreas example, radio music can come from the center speaker when the PC is set to 5.1 or greater surround. If only two speakers are connected, no speaker is assigned to that center channel, so the radio track can seem completely silent while other sounds remain audible.

“When travellig in a vehicle, Radio station music will come from the center speaker if the PC is set to use surround sound speakers (5.1 or more).”

The spelling in that quotation is Rockstar’s. The important point is channel routing: a stereo setup cannot reproduce a signal sent exclusively to a missing center channel.

Set the system to the arrangement you physically use

  1. Open your platform’s sound-output settings.
  2. Identify whether the connected device is stereo, a real 5.1 or 7.1 speaker system, a soundbar, a receiver, or a headset.
  3. Choose the matching speaker layout. Select stereo for two speakers or a normal stereo headset; select surround only when the connected equipment and its wiring support those channels.
  4. Apply the change, relaunch the game and test a vehicle radio station.

On Windows, the speaker configuration is selected in the sound device’s speaker setup. The labels differ between Windows versions and audio drivers, but the required decision is the same: do not tell Windows that two physical speakers are a 5.1 system.

Rockstar’s guidance is explicit: “If you only have stereo speakers do not set your Windows speaker settings to 5.1.” A virtual-surround feature in a headset or soundbar can be tested later, but first establish whether plain stereo restores the missing music.

When a receiver or soundbar is involved

A receiver may report a surround mode even when only two speakers are connected, and a soundbar may expose several virtual layouts. Temporarily select a direct or stereo input mode and retest. If radio returns, the earlier mode was probably routing a channel your physical setup did not reproduce. Restore surround only after confirming that every required speaker channel is present and working.

Step 4: On PC, update drivers and verify the selected sound device

Rockstar says missing audio in GTAV Enhanced may result from audio drivers, the audio device or the sound device, and recommends supported, current drivers with a configuration that matches the physical speakers. The same diagnostic logic is appropriate for a GTA VI PC installation, but it should not be described as a confirmed GTA VI bug fix.

Check the active device

  1. Open Windows sound settings and note the output device currently marked as active.
  2. Play a normal system sound or another application through that device.
  3. Open the device’s speaker configuration and choose stereo or surround to match the hardware.
  4. Disable or disconnect unused outputs temporarily so the game cannot switch to a monitor, controller or disconnected headset.
  5. Restart the game after applying the change.

Update the audio driver through a supported source

Install the current driver supplied for your PC, motherboard or sound hardware, then reboot before testing again. If the problem began immediately after a driver change, compare the manufacturer’s supported version rather than repeatedly installing unrelated driver packages. Record the driver version in your troubleshooting notes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not use a driver update as a substitute for channel configuration. A current driver with a 5.1 profile on two speakers can still route radio music to an inaudible center channel.

Step 5: Test Xbox Party Chat, but treat it as a precedent

Rockstar documented an Xbox Series X|S issue in GTA V/Online where players could not hear licensed in-game music while in Party Chat. Rockstar said it was investigating a solution. Because that report concerns GTA V, it does not prove that GTA VI suppresses music in the same situation.

It is nevertheless a quick, reversible test:

  1. Leave Xbox Party Chat completely.
  2. Close and restart the game rather than relying only on a suspended session.
  3. Enter a vehicle and test a station with music volume enabled.
  4. If music returns, repeat the test once with Party Chat active to see whether the result is consistent.

Record the result as “music changes with Party Chat” rather than reporting it as a confirmed GTA VI defect. If leaving Party Chat makes no difference, continue with output and channel checks instead of repeatedly reconnecting chat.

Step 6: Use a stereo gaming headset as an isolation test

A stereo gaming headset is useful because it bypasses the television, receiver and speaker-channel path. Connect a known-working headset, select it as the active output and test the same station.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Music works through the headset: inspect the original speakers, receiver mode, cable path and stereo/surround mapping.
  • Music remains absent but effects work: return to in-game music or station controls, then verify the system’s channel profile and drivers.
  • All sound disappears through the headset: check whether the headset is selected, muted or assigned to a different chat/game mix.

The headset is a diagnostic accessory, not evidence that GTA VI requires a particular model or audio format.

Use the platform and symptom together

Platform or setup Symptom to prioritize First targeted test
PlayStation or another console using TV speakers Effects and dialogue work, radio does not Check in-game music/station state, then compare a stereo headset.
Xbox Series X|S Licensed music disappears only during Party Chat Leave Party Chat and restart; classify the result as an older-GTA precedent unless Rockstar publishes GTA VI confirmation.
PC with two speakers Radio is silent while other audio works Change any 5.1-or-greater profile to stereo and verify the output device.
PC with a genuine surround system Radio is silent or unusually quiet Confirm the center speaker is connected, selected and producing test audio.
Receiver, soundbar or virtual-surround headset Music returns when a headset or stereo mode is used Test direct stereo, then re-enable surround only after channel mapping is confirmed.

The table narrows the next test; it does not establish that any platform has a known GTA VI radio defect.

A controlled troubleshooting order that avoids making the problem worse

Follow this order when you want one repeatable procedure rather than a list of possibilities:

  1. Write down the platform, game version shown by the platform, output device and whether dialogue and effects work.
  2. In the game, raise music/radio volume, verify mute is off and select a station.
  3. Test another station and, if practical, another vehicle.
  4. Confirm the active TV, receiver, speaker or headset output and remove accidental mute states.
  5. Compare the normal output with a known-working stereo headset.
  6. On PC, set the device layout to the physical arrangement and avoid 5.1 for two-speaker hardware.
  7. Update or reinstall the supported audio driver, reboot and retest.
  8. On Xbox, repeat the test after leaving Party Chat, documenting whether the result changes.
  9. Only after these checks should you reset broader audio settings or reinstall the game.

Reinstalling before checking routing and channel layout rarely helps a music-only symptom and can erase useful configuration information.

When to contact Rockstar Support

Escalate when radio remains silent after the station, output and channel tests, or when the problem is reproducible across more than one output. Use the GTA VI support portal and provide details that let support distinguish a game-state problem from an audio-path problem.

Include these details

  • Your platform and model, and whether the game is running through a television, receiver, monitor, speakers or headset.
  • Whether dialogue, effects, menu sounds and ambient audio work.
  • Whether every station is silent or only one station or vehicle behaves differently.
  • The music/radio volume and mute state you checked.
  • The selected stereo or surround layout and the number of physical speakers.
  • PC audio-device and driver details, if applicable.
  • Whether Xbox Party Chat was active and what happened after leaving it.
  • The exact sequence that reproduces the silence, including a vehicle, station and approximate time.

State clearly which tests changed the result and which did not. That is more useful than describing the issue simply as “GTA 6 radio broken.”

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Do not configure two speakers as 5.1. Rockstar specifically warns against this because a center-channel route can become inaudible.
  • Do not treat an older-game article as a GTA VI confirmation. The San Andreas and GTAV examples explain plausible failure modes only.
  • Do not assume a headset is required. It is an alternate output for diagnosis.
  • Do not keep changing master volume when only music is missing. Check the dedicated music/radio state and station selection.
  • Do not report a one-time Party Chat result as a proven GTA VI bug. Record it as an observation and include it in a support ticket.

The most defensible fix path is therefore straightforward: confirm the in-game station and music controls, verify the actual output device, match stereo or surround settings to the connected hardware, update PC audio drivers when relevant, and use Party Chat and a stereo headset as controlled isolation tests. None of those steps should be presented as a confirmed GTA VI-specific patch until Rockstar publishes one.
