Start by identifying the exact audio symptom
“Missing music” can describe several different failures. A game that is completely silent needs a different investigation from one where dialogue and effects work but the soundtrack is barely audible. Note what happens before changing settings:

Also record when the fault begins: immediately at startup, after loading a save, when entering a new area, or after changing another application’s audio device. That timing is useful if you need to report the problem.

PC: use this fix order
1. Update before troubleshooting volume
ATLUS West’s October 2024 PC patch 1.03 note says, “Today’s patch for Windows PC and Steam increases the game’s Master Volume.” The same note covers a console patch numbered 1.04, so do not assume the PC number applies to PlayStation or Xbox. Let your PC client finish any pending update, then start the game again. The patch note establishes a volume adjustment; it does not promise to repair every instance of missing audio.

2. Set the computer output to a safe level, then adjust the game
After patch 1.03, ATLUS specifically advised players to “turn down your computer’s volume before starting up and readjust the in-game Master Volume setting.” Follow that order:
- Before launching, lower the operating system’s main output volume to a comfortable level rather than leaving it at maximum.
- Start Metaphor: ReFantazio and open its audio options.
- Raise or lower Master Volume until music, speech, and effects are audible without being uncomfortably loud.
- Use the computer’s output control for final listening comfort after the in-game level is set.
This matters because the patch changed the game’s overall volume behavior. A setting that was comfortable before the update may now sound much louder, while a player who changed several controls at once can mistake a level mismatch for missing music.
3. Reselect the output when sound vanishes during play
A Steam community user reported restoring sound by opening the game’s Sound Settings and selecting the audio output again. Treat this as an anecdotal workaround, not a confirmed universal solution:

- Pause the game if the menu is available.
- Open Sound Settings.
- Select the output device you actually want to use, such as your current headphones or speakers.
- Return to gameplay and test music, dialogue, and effects separately.
If the sound returns, note what changed and whether it remains after a scene transition. If it disappears again, include that pattern in your report instead of presenting the workaround as a permanent fix.
4. Check routing before changing unrelated settings
PCs can have several possible outputs active at once. Confirm that the device selected by the game is the same device you are listening to. This is especially important after plugging in a headset, switching from speakers to a monitor, connecting a controller, or changing an audio device while the game is running. Do not diagnose a silent soundtrack until you know where the game is sending its audio.
Make one change at a time. If you alter the operating-system output, the game’s Master Volume, and another application simultaneously, you will not know which change affected the result. After each change, test a repeatable scene or menu and write down whether music, voices, and effects are present.

5. Separate a balance issue from complete silence
If voices and sound effects are audible but music is extremely low, describe it as a balance problem rather than “no audio.” The available ATLUS note documents a Master Volume change, not a separate, documented music-volume control or a universal fix for one missing channel. Keep the Master Volume at a comfortable level and document exactly which channels are affected. That distinction gives support staff more useful information than a report that simply says “sound broken.”

SEGA’s FAQ, updated October 7, 2024, says that players can change the game’s text/audio language from the pause menu whenever that menu is available. Use that setting if spoken lines are in an unexpected language or if you are checking whether a language selection changed what you hear.
- Pause the game when the pause menu is available.
- Open the language settings.
- Review the text and audio language choices.
- Apply the intended selection and test a scene with spoken dialogue.
Changing language is a selection feature, not a documented repair for missing music. If the soundtrack is absent while the selected voice language is already correct, return to the volume and output checks instead of repeatedly changing language.

When the problem happens only after starting or loading
Audio missing immediately at startup
Check that the game is updated, verify the computer’s output level, and set the in-game Master Volume. Then confirm that the selected output is the device you are using. A startup failure gives you a clean opportunity to test settings before changing devices during gameplay.
Audio cuts out during a session
Pause, reselect the output in Sound Settings, and test all three categories: music, dialogue, and effects. Because this procedure comes from an individual Steam report, a successful result on one PC does not establish the cause or guarantee that it will work on another.
Audio returns and then disappears again
Record the trigger: a particular area, loading screen, menu, device switch, or other repeatable action. Avoid repeatedly toggling random settings. A reproducible trigger is more valuable to troubleshooting than a long list of changes with no order.
Console players: do not transfer PC instructions blindly
The October 2024 ATLUS note identifies PC patch 1.03 and a console patch 1.04, but the documented Master Volume advice is specifically written for Windows PC and Steam. Official platform-specific steps for missing audio on PlayStation and Xbox were not established in the available material.
On a console, begin with the symptom record: whether all audio or only music is affected, whether the problem starts immediately or during play, and which output path you use. Check the console’s own output and volume controls, then the game’s audio settings. If you report the issue, identify the console model and the patch version shown by the game. Do not claim that the PC patch procedure, or the PC output-selection workaround, applies identically to a console.
Prepare a useful ATLUS bug report
For an unresolved issue, use ATLUS’s pinned Steam bug-report thread. ATLUS asks for a detailed account and your PC setup. A concise report should include the requested information plus the practical observations below:
- Platform: Windows PC and Steam, or the exact console if applicable.
- Timing: whether audio is missing at startup, after loading, or only after playing for a while.
- Scope: all sound, music only, dialogue only, effects only, or a combination.
- Output: the headphones, speakers, monitor, or other device selected when the problem occurs.
- Version: the game patch shown by your client; ATLUS’s cited PC note is patch 1.03 and its cited console note is 1.04, both from October 2024.
- Steps attempted: updating, adjusting Master Volume, lowering computer volume before launch, and reselecting the output in Sound Settings.
- Reproduction details: the scene, menu, transition, or action that makes the sound disappear, if you can repeat it.
The first two items ATLUS explicitly requests are a detailed issue description and PC setup. The remaining fields are reporting suggestions that help separate an output-routing problem from a channel-specific or intermittent fault. Be clear about what did not work; do not report the player workaround as an official fix.
A compact decision tree
- Is every game sound silent? Check the computer or console output, then the game’s Master Volume.
- Is music merely quiet? Treat it as a level or balance issue and test Master Volume without changing several controls at once.
- Did sound disappear during play? Reselect the output in the game’s Sound Settings; this is a player-reported workaround.
- Are voices in the wrong language? Use the pause menu’s text/audio language setting when available.
- Still broken on PC? Confirm the game is updated, note the output and affected channels, and report the detailed behavior and PC setup to ATLUS.
- Playing on console? Record the platform and version and use console-specific support; do not assume the PC guidance is identical.
What is and is not established
ATLUS has documented a PC Master Volume change in patch 1.03 and a corresponding recommendation to lower computer volume before launch and readjust the in-game setting. A Steam user has reported recovering sound by selecting the output again in Sound Settings. SEGA documents language switching from the pause menu. None of these sources provides a success rate, a confirmed cause for every silent-audio report, or a universal repair for missing music. The notes describe October 2024 behavior; later updates could change it.
