How to Fix Missing or Muted Music in a PC Game (Windows 11 and 10)

By Freedom251 Team · · 9 min read

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Start inside the game: open its Audio or Sound menu, raise both Music and Master volume, and clear any music or mute setting. While the game is running, open Windows Volume Mixer and make sure the game is not muted, its slider is raised, and it is routed to the speakers or headphones you are actually using. If more than one app is silent, troubleshoot Windows audio rather than the game alone.

The exact menu names vary by game, but the order below separates an in-game music setting, Windows’ per-app mixer, the selected output device, and deeper Windows audio components. That prevents a normal-looking taskbar icon from sending you down the wrong path.

Use the symptom to choose the right audio layer

Before changing drivers or reinstalling anything, establish how wide the failure is. Play the affected game and test a second game or a non-game app such as a web video. The comparison does not prove a cause, but it tells you where to start and limits unnecessary changes.

What you observe Start with Why
Only the music track is missing; effects or dialogue still play The game’s Music control, music mute option, and audio profile Music can have its own slider or toggle even when other channels work.
All sound is missing in one game; other apps play normally The game’s settings, Windows Volume Mixer entry, and that app’s output device Windows can mute or reroute one app independently of the system volume.
Several games or apps are silent Windows output selection, mute state, enhancements, troubleshooter, services, and driver A shared Windows audio problem is more likely than several unrelated game settings.
Sound works through one device but not another Output selection, cable or USB connection, and the device’s own availability The game may be sending audio to a different endpoint or the connection may not be active.

Make one change at a time and test the game after each change. If a step fixes the music, stop there; deeper repairs can introduce new variables.

Fix music that is missing while other game audio works

Raise Music separately from Master and Effects

  1. Open the game’s Options, Settings, Audio, or Sound screen.
  2. Raise the Music slider, then check Master. A high effects setting does not compensate for a music slider at zero.
  3. Look for a music speaker icon, a global mute checkbox, or a channel selector that disables music.
  4. Apply or save the settings, return to gameplay, and test a scene that normally has a soundtrack.

There is no universal menu path for an unnamed game. Some titles use separate sliders for music, ambience, dialogue, and effects; others put music in an audio profile or accessibility preset. If the controls appear correct but only the soundtrack remains absent, use that game’s official support instructions for its version and launcher rather than assuming a Windows fault.

Check settings that change when the game loses focus

Some games expose a Mute when minimized, Pause audio in background, or similar option. If music disappears after switching to another window, clear that option or test while the game is focused. This check applies only if the title provides such a setting; it is not a Windows-wide control.

Unmute the game in Windows Volume Mixer

Windows has volume controls for individual applications. A game can therefore be muted or turned down even when the taskbar volume looks normal.

Windows 11

  1. Leave the game running so Windows can list its audio session.
  2. Open Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer.
  3. Under the apps section, find the game by its title or process label.
  4. Raise its volume and clear the mute control. If the game is not listed, play audio in it again and reopen Volume mixer.

Windows 10

  1. Keep the game running.
  2. Right-click the volume icon on the taskbar and choose Open Volume mixer.
  3. Find the game’s channel, unmute it, and raise its slider.

App-level volume can override the main Windows volume. This is why adjusting only the physical speaker knob or the taskbar slider may not restore music.

Confirm that the game is using the intended output

A PC can have several audio endpoints: motherboard speakers, a USB headset, a monitor connected over HDMI or DisplayPort, a dock, or a Bluetooth device. Windows’ default output and an individual app’s output do not always match.

Select the system output

  1. Open Settings > System > Sound.
  2. Under output, select the speakers or headphones you intend to hear.
  3. Play a test sound or a non-game video to confirm that this endpoint produces audio.

Check the app-specific output

  1. Open Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer in Windows 11, or the equivalent app controls available in your Windows 10 build.
  2. Expand the affected game’s entry.
  3. Inspect its Output device. Set it to the intended speakers or headphones rather than an unused monitor, dock, or disconnected headset.
  4. Return to the game and test again.

If a display without speakers became the selected HDMI or DisplayPort output, the game may be producing audio normally but sending it somewhere you cannot hear. Disconnecting unused devices temporarily can make the routing error obvious. For a USB device, reseat the connector and try another USB port if the device itself is not appearing; this is a connection check, not a reason to buy replacement hardware.

When every sound in one game is missing

Separate a game problem from a Windows problem

Play audio in another game and in a non-game app. If those work, keep your changes focused on the affected title and its Windows app entry. If they also fail, skip ahead to the Windows-wide section instead of repeatedly changing the game’s sliders.

Verify files for a Steam installation

For a game installed through Steam, file verification is a reasonable platform-specific repair after checking the in-game mixer and Windows routing. A Microsoft Q&A response describes this path:

  1. Open Steam and select Library.
  2. Right-click the affected game and choose Properties.
  3. Open Installed Files.
  4. Select Verify Integrity of Game Files and wait for Steam to finish.
  5. Launch the game and retest its music.

This process replaces or reacquires files that Steam identifies as damaged or missing. The cited instructions come from community support rather than an official Steam policy page, so verification is a possible repair step, not a guaranteed explanation or fix. It can also take time and may reacquire modified files.

Check launcher and game-specific audio profiles

Some games store audio settings in a launcher profile, per-user configuration, or separate accessibility preset. Reset only the audio options first, if the game offers that choice, and note your current values before doing so. Do not delete configuration files unless the game’s official support instructions call for it; doing so can remove key bindings or other preferences.

When several games or apps are silent

Multiple silent applications point toward a shared Windows audio layer. Work from the least disruptive checks to the more invasive ones.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recheck output and mute state

Open Settings > System > Sound, choose the intended output, and make sure the master volume is not muted. Then inspect Volume Mixer for each affected app. A normal taskbar icon does not rule out a wrong endpoint or independent app mute.

Turn off audio enhancements temporarily

  1. Open the properties for the selected output device from Windows sound settings.
  2. Find the audio-enhancement control. Depending on the Windows build and driver, it may appear as Audio enhancements, an enhancements drop-down, or a vendor-specific effects panel.
  3. Set enhancements to Off (or disable effects), then test the game.
  4. Restore the previous setting if it made no difference or if you prefer the processed sound.

Enhancements can interfere with application audio. This is a reversible diagnostic change, not a recommendation to leave every effect disabled.

Run the Windows audio troubleshooter

On Windows 11, Microsoft directs users to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Audio. The current guidance also points Windows 11 users to the Get Help audio troubleshooter. Labels and placement can vary by build, so use the search box in Settings if the path is different. Follow the checks it presents, then retest the affected game.

Restart Windows audio services

If apps remain silent after the basic checks, restart the services that carry Windows audio:

  1. Press Windows key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Find Windows Audio, right-click it, and choose Restart.
  3. Find Windows Audio Endpoint Builder and choose Restart as well.
  4. Close the Services window, reopen the game, and test.

Restarting these services can interrupt audio for currently open apps. Save work first and relaunch the game if its audio session does not reconnect automatically.

Update, roll back, or reinstall the audio driver last

Drivers are a deeper intervention. First run Windows Update and check whether the PC or audio-device manufacturer provides a current driver for your exact model and Windows edition. If a recent update introduced the failure, a rollback option may be available in Device Manager. If the driver is damaged, reinstall it using the manufacturer’s official package and restart Windows.

Do not remove a working driver merely because one game is quiet; verify the scope first. Before reinstalling, record the device model and download the correct package so you are not left without an identified recovery path. Driver menus differ by manufacturer, so follow the device maker’s documented procedure.

Use the right order for common hardware and routing failures

USB headset or dock

Confirm that Windows still lists the device and that it is selected as output. Reseat the cable and try another USB port if the device disappears or fails a system test. Then check the game’s app-specific output, because the game may retain a previous endpoint even after Windows changes its default.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HDMI or DisplayPort monitor

Select the monitor only if it has speakers or an audio output you are actually using. Otherwise choose your headphones or speakers. A display becoming the default output can make every app appear muted without changing any volume slider.

Bluetooth device

Verify that the device is connected, selected as output, and not being used by another profile that lacks playback. Test a wired or built-in endpoint only to identify whether the issue follows the Windows audio system or the wireless device; do not assume the game is at fault based on one endpoint alone.

Decision guide: what to do next

Scope Audio layer to inspect Reversible next action Escalation if unresolved
Music only Game Music slider, music mute, profile, minimize behavior Reset the game’s audio options and test while focused Consult the game’s official support for its specific controls
One game’s complete audio Windows app volume and app output, then game settings Unmute and route the game in Volume Mixer For Steam, verify installed files; then use game support
Several apps System output, enhancements, troubleshooter, services Select the correct endpoint and disable enhancements temporarily Restart audio services, then update or reinstall the driver
Only one physical endpoint Connections and endpoint selection Reconnect it, try another USB port when relevant, and test another endpoint Investigate the device or connection after software routing is ruled out

Common mistakes that make the problem look harder

  • Changing only the taskbar slider: the game can have its own Windows app volume set to zero.
  • Assuming effects prove music is enabled: games often keep music on a separate channel.
  • Leaving an unused monitor selected: HDMI or DisplayPort output can be active even when the monitor has no speakers.
  • Changing drivers first: a driver reinstall is more disruptive than checking two sliders and an output menu.
  • Testing only the affected game: a second game or non-game app helps identify whether the failure is local or system-wide.
  • Keeping enhancements enabled during diagnosis: effects can interfere with app audio, so temporarily disabling them removes one variable.
  • Assuming a Steam verification guarantees a repair: it is a reasonable file check for one installation, not proof that missing files caused the silence.

Confirm the repair

  1. Close and relaunch the game so it creates a fresh audio session.
  2. Play a scene with known music and separately test effects or dialogue.
  3. Switch briefly between the intended output and another available endpoint, then return to the intended one, to confirm the route is stable.
  4. Open Windows Volume Mixer while the game plays and verify that its slider and output remain correct.
  5. If you disabled enhancements, decide whether to restore them after confirming that music still works.

Windows 10 support status

Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. It no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for that version. The volume-mixer and sound checks above may still apply to an existing Windows 10 installation, but its unsupported status is a separate operating-system risk. If you are troubleshooting a Windows 10 PC, use drivers and utilities intended for that exact hardware and edition.
