A missing or empty pytest-HTML report can mean several different things: the plugin did not load, pytest stopped before generating a report, no tests were collected, a custom hook hid the results, or CI failed to preserve the file. Diagnose those stages in order: inspect the command and exit status, confirm collection, verify the report path, then check hooks and artifact handling.
1. Check the pytest command and its exit status
Start with the exact command shown in the CI log. It must run in the intended Python environment and include pytest-html’s output option. For example:
python -m pytest --html=artifacts/report.htmlIf pytest stops before running tests, read the first error and its exit code. pytest distinguishes test failures from errors that prevent the report stage from being reached.

These meanings come from pytest’s exit-code reference. A nonzero exit code does not by itself prove that no report was written; check whether the file exists after the test step.

2. Confirm pytest-html is installed in the CI interpreter
Check the Python environment used by the test command, not just a developer machine or a different setup step. If the plugin is unavailable, pytest may stop with a usage error rather than produce the expected report.
You can require the plugin in pytest configuration so that a missing installation fails clearly:

required_plugins = pytest-htmlpytest documents required_plugins as a way to fail when a listed plugin is unavailable; see the pytest API reference. Match the option and configuration syntax to the pytest version installed in CI.
3. Check whether tests were collected
Read pytest’s collection summary before treating the problem as HTML rendering. Exit code 5 means no tests were collected. Confirm that the job runs from the expected directory, points to the intended test files, and uses selection options that match existing tests. These are common things to investigate when collection is empty, but the job command and log are the evidence for which one applies.

4. Match the report destination to the artifact path
Compare the value passed to --html with the path CI is configured to collect. Relative paths are interpreted from the test step’s working directory, so the same-looking path can refer to different locations if steps use different directories. Also confirm whether the artifact configuration expects a file or a directory.
pytest-html’s documented command form is pytest --html=report.html. To request a single-file report, add --self-contained-html:

python -m pytest --html=artifacts/report.html --self-contained-htmlThis produces a standalone HTML report for easier artifact handling, but images added to the report as files or links remain external and may not appear when the HTML is opened by itself. A report can be generated successfully while project-level hooks or other plugins remove or replace what it displays. Search your conftest.py files and loaded plugins for pytest-html hooks, especially:

pytest_html_results_table_row, which can alter or remove results-table row content.pytest_html_results_table_html, which can replace additional HTML and log output.
Temporarily disable the relevant customization as a diagnostic and compare the report. Restore the intended presentation once you have identified the hook responsible. The pytest-html guide documents these hooks and their effects.
6. Separate report generation from artifact preservation
Check for the report in the job workspace immediately after pytest exits, before the CI artifact step runs.
- If the file is absent at that point, return to the command, plugin, collection, and hook checks above.
- If the file is present in the workspace but missing from the downloaded artifact, inspect the artifact path, working directory, job conditions, and what happens to the artifact step after pytest fails.
Artifact behavior varies by CI provider. pytest’s documentation defines pytest exit codes, but does not establish universal CI upload behavior; use the current official artifact documentation for the provider and workflow in use.
7. Enable report streaming for long test runs
If you need report updates before the entire suite finishes, pytest-html documents generate_report_on_test = True:

generate_report_on_test = TrueWith this setting, the report is generated as each test finishes rather than waiting for the full run. It improves visibility during a long run; it does not change where the file is written or ensure that CI uploads it. See the pytest-html user guide for version-specific details.
