If Imaging devices is missing from Windows 10 Device Manager, the camera or scanner may still be present under another category, hidden, blocked by privacy controls, or missing its driver. Work through the checks below before assuming the hardware has failed.

Windows 10 may list a webcam under Cameras, Imaging devices, or Sound, video and game controllers. A scanner may appear under Imaging devices, an imaging-related entry, or Other devices when its driver is unavailable.

What a missing Imaging devices category actually means

The category name is not fixed

Device Manager does not use one universal label for every camera. Depending on the model, driver and Windows build, a webcam can be listed under Cameras, Imaging devices, or Sound, video and game controllers. A scanner can likewise be listed differently from a camera. Therefore, the absence of the exact Imaging devices heading does not by itself prove a broken camera, scanner or USB port.

Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)

Microsoft’s Windows Image Acquisition architecture is the still-image framework for Windows. It supports devices such as digital cameras and scanners. Applications that import photographs or scan documents may depend on WIA services and drivers even when Device Manager uses a different category name.

  • Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
  • Crisp HD 720p/30 fps video calls with diagonal 55° field of view and auto light correction. Compatible with popular platforms including Skype and Zoom.
  • The built-in noise-reducing mic makes sure your voice comes across clearly up to 1.5 meters away, even if you’re in busy surroundings.
  • C270’s RightLight 2 feature adjusts to lighting conditions, producing brighter, contrasted images to help you look good in all your conference calls.
  • The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.

Common reasons the device is not visible

  • Camera access or individual app access is disabled in Windows privacy settings.
  • An antivirus or firewall product is blocking camera access.
  • An external device is connected through a faulty USB port or unnecessary hub.
  • The device is hidden, shown as an unknown device, or marked with a warning icon.
  • The driver is missing, corrupted, incompatible with Windows 10, or supplied only by the manufacturer.
  • A legacy camera uses an obsolete streaming driver.
  • A scanner was switched from a WSD connection to USB and WIA did not initialize the new device correctly.

Prepare before changing drivers

Check the physical setup

For a USB webcam or scanner, disconnect it, wait a few seconds, and reconnect it directly to a different USB port. Avoid an unpowered hub while testing, and disconnect other unnecessary USB devices so that the result is easier to interpret. Network or WSD scanners should remain connected to the same network during discovery tests.

Check privacy and security controls

  1. Open Settings > Privacy > Camera.
  2. Turn on camera access for the device and allow apps to access the camera.
  3. Enable access for the desktop or specific app that needs the camera, where those switches are shown.
  4. Review your antivirus and firewall settings for a camera-blocking or webcam-protection feature, and temporarily allow the affected app or device for testing.

These controls can make a working camera appear unavailable to an application, so changing drivers before checking them can lead to unnecessary reinstalls.

Step-by-step fix for a missing webcam

1. Find every possible Device Manager entry

  1. Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Cameras, Imaging devices, and Sound, video and game controllers.
  3. Expand Other devices and look for an unknown device or a yellow warning icon.
  4. Open a suspected device’s Properties to view its manufacturer, driver status and any Windows error message.

The warning icon and the Properties dialog often reveal more than the category heading. Record the exact model and error text before uninstalling anything.

2. Rescan for hardware

  1. In Device Manager, select Action > Scan for hardware changes.
  2. Wait for Windows to rediscover connected hardware.
  3. Restart Windows, then check the same categories again.

A rescan can restore an entry after a temporary detection failure, but it cannot supply a driver that Windows does not have.

3. Let Windows search for a driver

  1. Right-click the camera entry or unknown device and choose Update driver.
  2. Select Search automatically for drivers.
  3. Restart if Windows installs a driver, then test the camera in the application that previously reported that no camera was attached.

If Windows reports that the best driver is already installed but the device still fails, continue with the manufacturer-driver procedure rather than repeatedly running the same search.

4. Remove and reinstall the exact manufacturer driver

  1. Download the Windows 10 driver for the exact camera model from the camera manufacturer’s official support page. Microsoft advises using official manufacturer sources for drivers.
  2. In Device Manager, right-click the device and select Uninstall device. If Windows offers a checkbox to remove the driver package, select it only when you have already downloaded the correct replacement.
  3. Restart Windows with the camera connected, or reconnect it after the restart.
  4. Run the manufacturer’s installer, or use Update driver > Browse my computer for drivers and point Windows to the downloaded driver folder.
  5. Return to Device Manager and confirm that the warning icon has disappeared.

Do not install a driver intended for a different model or a different Windows edition. A model-specific package may be required for autofocus controls, microphone integration, infrared sensors or other vendor features.

5. Use the in-box USB Video Device driver

Most available USB webcams are compatible with the standard USB Video Class (UVC) driver included with Windows. This is useful when the manufacturer package is unavailable or damaged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. In Device Manager, right-click the webcam and select Update driver.
  2. Choose Browse my computer for drivers.
  3. Select Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.
  4. Choose USB Video Device and complete the installation.
  5. Restart Windows and test the camera.

The generic driver can restore basic video capture, but it may not provide vendor-only functions such as Windows Hello face recognition. If those features matter, reinstall the manufacturer’s Windows 10 package after confirming basic detection.

6. Check for a legacy streaming driver

Open the camera’s Properties > Driver Details. If the details include stream.sys, Microsoft identifies the camera as designed before Windows 7 and advises replacing it with a newer camera. In that case, additional rescans and reinstalls are unlikely to make the old hardware fully compatible.

Scanner-specific fixes when WIA cannot find it

Understand the WSD-to-USB discovery problem

Microsoft documented a Windows Image Acquisition initialization issue that can occur when a WSD scanner is disconnected and a different USB scanner is connected afterward. Scanning applications may fail to find the USB device even though it is plugged in. The issue affected Windows 10 versions through 1909 and was fixed in Windows 10 version 2004.

Apply the documented workarounds

  1. Uninstall the currently connected scanner in Device Manager, disconnect it, reconnect it, and allow Windows to detect it again.
  2. If discovery still fails, open the Services console, locate Windows Image Acquisition (WIA), stop the service, and start it again. Then reconnect the scanner and reopen the scanning application.
  3. Restart the computer while the scanner is connected and powered on.

Use the exact scanner driver supplied by its manufacturer when Windows still shows an unknown device or a warning icon. For scanning software, check whether the model supports the application’s expected WIA or TWAIN interface; a driver that installs successfully is not necessarily compatible with every scanning program.

When to replace the camera or scanner

Replacement is reasonable after privacy settings, ports, Device Manager detection, rescanning and the correct driver have all been checked. The following criteria help match a replacement to the actual workflow.

Decision factor Webcam guidance Scanner guidance
Plug-and-play support Most USB webcams support UVC and can use Windows’ in-box USB Video Device driver. Confirm that the scanner has a current Windows 10 driver from its manufacturer.
Connection type A direct USB connection is the simplest replacement path. Choose between direct USB and network or WSD operation based on how the scanning software discovers devices.
Special features The generic UVC driver may omit vendor features such as Windows Hello face recognition. Verify the functions and software support required by the model-specific driver.
Application interface Confirm that the application accepts a standard camera stream. Check WIA or TWAIN compatibility with the applications used for scanning.

For a camera, a UVC-compatible USB webcam is the most direct physical replacement when the existing unit uses an obsolete driver or cannot be detected after the manual checks. For a scanner, a model with a maintained manufacturer driver is usually preferable to a generic replacement because scanning workflows often depend on device-specific features and WIA or TWAIN support.

Windows 10 support status and what it changes

Microsoft’s current camera support information states that free Windows 10 support ended on 2025-10-14. Driver availability therefore depends increasingly on the device manufacturer and on the driver packages already available for your Windows 10 build. This does not change the troubleshooting sequence: verify permissions and connections first, then use Device Manager and the manufacturer’s official Windows 10 package.

Optional driver shortcut

As an optional shortcut after these manual checks, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices for outdated, corrupted or missing drivers, install only official drivers, show current and recommended versions, and provide driver backup, restore and scheduled scans. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, with a 2-day free trial and no credit card before a subscription. Results vary, and no utility repairs every hardware or driver problem.
