A missing-DLL message usually means Windows or an application cannot load a required component. The safest fix is to identify the exact filename and affected program, repair Windows components with DISM followed by System File Checker, restore the correct Visual C++ runtime when the message names one, and repair or reinstall a single failing application. Do not download a matching-named DLL from a random website or copy it into System32.
Start with the exact error
Write down the complete message before changing anything. Record the DLL filename, the application that displays the message, any error code, and whether the problem affects one program or several. A message such as “VCRUNTIME140.dll was not found” points to a different remedy from an error naming a vendor’s own DLL.

- Filename: preserve the spelling, including numbers such as
140or140_1. - Program: note the executable that fails and where it was installed.
- Scope: test one other application. If only one program fails, its installation or dependencies are more likely than a damaged Windows file.
- Timing: note whether the error began after an application update, a Windows update, a driver change, or an interrupted installation.
A DLL is a shared library, not a standalone repair package. Its version, processor architecture, and dependencies must match the program that loads it. The filename alone does not prove that a downloaded copy is suitable.

| DISM or SFC reports corruption it cannot repair | Windows component store or protected files with unresolved damage | Review the servicing logs, install pending updates, then consider a Windows 11 repair reinstall | %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log and %windir%LogsDISMdism.log |
This order is deliberate: repair is more reversible than resetting Windows, and the error text tells you whether to work on Windows, a runtime package, or one application.

Prepare safely before repairing
- Save open work and make a current backup of important files.
- Close the program that reports the DLL error and any installer for it.
- Use an administrator account. DISM and SFC cannot complete all repairs from a standard, non-elevated terminal.
- Keep the full message available. If the dialog disappears, open Event Viewer or the application’s own log and copy the filename exactly.
- Download runtimes or application installers only from Microsoft or the application publisher. Do not use a “DLL fixer” site as a source for an individual file.
Repair Windows components with DISM, then SFC
Microsoft documents DISM as a way to repair the Windows component image. System File Checker (SFC) then checks protected Windows files and attempts repairs. Microsoft Support describes SFC this way: “The System File Checker tool checks for corrupted system files and helps fix problems that may cause Windows to malfunction.” Run the tools in this order; SFC can depend on a healthy component store.
- Open an elevated terminal. Right-click the Start button, choose Terminal (Admin) (or Windows PowerShell (Admin) on a system using that label), and approve the User Account Control prompt. You can also search for Command Prompt, select Run as administrator, and approve the prompt.
- Repair the component image. At the prompt, enter exactly:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Press Enter and let the operation reach 100%. It may appear to pause at a percentage while servicing continues. Do not close the window or power off the PC. - Run the protected-file check after DISM finishes. Enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait for verification to reach 100%. - Restart Windows. A restart ensures repaired components and files are loaded before you test the affected program.
- Retest the same action. Launch the application that produced the message and perform the operation that previously failed. Record whether the DLL dialog is gone, changed, or unchanged.
Interpret the command results
- If DISM completes successfully and SFC reports no integrity violations, the reported Windows files are not currently showing corruption. Continue with the application or runtime-specific steps if the error remains.
- If SFC says it repaired files, restart and test again. Keep the result text for support if the message returns.
- If either command says some files could not be repaired, do not substitute a downloaded DLL. Install pending Windows updates, rerun the commands once after the update, and inspect the servicing logs if the failure persists.
The main SFC record is in %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log; DISM writes to %windir%LogsDISMdism.log. In Command Prompt, you can open the CBS log in Notepad with notepad %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log. Search for the DLL filename or for entries marked as unable to repair, and provide the relevant lines to Microsoft support rather than deleting or editing the logs.
Fix VCRUNTIME140.dll and MSVCP140.dll errors
VCRUNTIME140.dll and MSVCP140.dll are associated with the Microsoft Visual C++ 2015–2022 Redistributable used by many Windows applications. Microsoft Community guidance specifically connects these messages with that runtime family. Installing an arbitrary DLL is not equivalent to installing the runtime: the redistributable supplies the linked libraries, registration and servicing behavior expected by the application.

Repair an existing redistributable
- Open Settings from Start.
- Go to Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for entries named Microsoft Visual C++ 2015–2022 Redistributable. If more than one architecture is listed, note each one before changing it.
- Open the entry’s three-dot menu, choose Modify, and select Repair when the Microsoft maintenance dialog appears.
- Restart Windows and launch the affected application.
Install the required package when it is absent
Use the current Visual C++ Redistributable installer supplied by Microsoft and select the package required by the application. A 32-bit application can require the x86 runtime even on 64-bit Windows, while a 64-bit application requires the x64 package; the application publisher’s requirements are the authority. Install only from Microsoft, restart, and test. If the program still reports the same filename, repair or reinstall that program because its private files may also be damaged.
Do not remove every Visual C++ entry simply to “start fresh.” Other applications may rely on different versions, and removing unrelated runtimes can create additional launch errors.
Repair or reinstall one failing application
When one program fails and other programs start normally, Windows SFC cannot replace every third-party DLL. The missing file may belong to the application’s own package, an add-on, or a runtime it expects. Work from the least destructive option to the most disruptive.

- Check the publisher’s support page for an update that names the DLL error or your Windows 11 version.
- In Settings > Apps > Installed apps, open the application’s three-dot menu. If Advanced options includes Repair, use it first. This normally attempts to restore files without removing application data.
- Open the application and test the failing operation. If Repair is unavailable or ineffective, use the publisher’s current installer to reinstall the program.
- If the installer offers to repair dependencies or runtimes, allow it to do so. Do not replace a supplied DLL with a file copied from another computer.
- Restart Windows and test again. Keep the installer version and exact error text if you need the publisher’s support team.
Some applications have their own launcher, plug-in manager or game-file verification command. Use those supported repair functions before manually deleting files from the installation directory. If uninstalling is the only available route, back up settings and saved data first and confirm where the application stores them.
Install pending Windows updates
Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install applicable updates, and restart when prompted. Updates can service the component store and system libraries that DISM and SFC use. After the restart, rerun the affected application. If an update repeatedly fails, record its error code and resolve Windows Update separately rather than downloading a DLL as a workaround.

Persistent corruption after updates and a second DISM/SFC pass is a system-maintenance problem, not evidence that a random DLL copy is safe. Save the command results and the relevant lines from both logs. They help distinguish a missing component payload from a damaged protected file and give support a reproducible starting point.

Use a Windows 11 repair reinstall
A Windows 11 repair reinstall refreshes Windows installation components while following the options offered by the current installation media or recovery workflow. Read each screen carefully, back up data first, and verify whether the selected path keeps applications and personal files before confirming it. The exact choices can vary by edition and installation method, so do not assume that every reset or reinstall preserves programs.
Contact Microsoft support
Escalate when the repair reinstall is unavailable, DISM repeatedly fails, SFC identifies files it cannot repair, or multiple core Windows functions fail. Provide the exact DLL name, complete error text, Windows 11 edition and build, the application name, the DISM and SFC result messages, and the relevant CBS or DISM log excerpts. This is more useful than reporting only that “a DLL is missing.”
Why downloading a single DLL is unsafe
- Version mismatch: a file with the right name can be from a different runtime release.
- Architecture mismatch: 32-bit and 64-bit applications load different binaries.
- Dependency chains: one replacement can expose another missing library or a side-by-side runtime problem.
- Authenticity: an unverified download can be modified or bundled with unwanted software.
- Servicing: Windows and application installers track files, registrations and updates; copying into
System32bypasses that maintenance model.
Never copy a DLL into System32 solely because its filename matches the dialog. Use DISM and SFC for Windows files, the official Visual C++ Redistributable for Microsoft runtime files, and the publisher’s installer for application-owned files.
Quick Recap
A compact decision checklist
- Capture the exact filename, message, application and scope.
- If several programs or Windows itself are affected, run elevated DISM first and SFC second.
- If the filename is
VCRUNTIME140.dllorMSVCP140.dll, repair or install the appropriate Microsoft Visual C++ 2015–2022 Redistributable. - If one application alone fails, repair, update or reinstall it from its publisher.
- Install pending Windows updates, restart, and retest.
- If corruption remains, preserve CBS/DISM logs and consider a Windows 11 repair reinstall or Microsoft support.
- Do not use random DLL download sites or manual
System32copying.
