Start by debugging the ABCpdf rendering path, not by adding more font-weight: bold declarations. A browser and ABCpdf 9 can apply different media stylesheets, cascade rules, HTML engines, and font fallbacks. Use a minimal test heading, inspect its computed style in the media context ABCpdf actually uses, verify the selected engine and media option, and confirm that a real bold font face is available. The available reports do not establish one universal ABCpdf 9 fix, so treat print CSS, overrides, and font selection as controlled diagnostics rather than guaranteed remedies.
What the symptom means
The reported defect is specific: an <h5> looks bold in a normal browser but loses that appearance in a PDF generated by ABCpdf 9. The same issue report says both a stylesheet rule such as h5 { font-weight: bold; } and an inline declaration were already tried without solving the output difference.
That makes this unlikely to be a simple omission of the HTML declaration. The PDF conversion may be evaluating a different stylesheet, a different media type, a different HTML engine, or a different font than the desktop browser. It is also possible that a later or more specific rule wins in the converter’s final cascade.
Build a minimal reproduction first
Before changing a production template, reduce the case to one heading and the smallest CSS and HTML that still fails. This separates an ABCpdf rendering problem from layout, framework, or asset-loading noise.

Check print media and the cascade
The Stack Overflow answer for this symptom suggests testing a print-media rule, checking for overrides, and putting the rule late in the stylesheet. That is a useful diagnostic, not a confirmed fix for every ABCpdf 9 installation.
/* Put this after framework and component styles while testing */
@media print {
h5,
h5#case {
font-weight: 700 !important;
}
}
Use h5 to target every H5. An ID selector such as #h5 targets an element whose ID is literally “h5”; it is not equivalent to the element selector h5. If the affected heading has an ID, combine it deliberately as in h5#case.

- Confirm that the stylesheet containing the rule is reachable from the conversion process and that its relative URLs resolve from the converter’s working location.
- Search all loaded CSS for a later declaration, a more-specific selector, or a rule that sets
font-weight: normal,400, or a custom property used by the heading. - Check whether a print stylesheet intentionally resets headings or hides the font face declaration.
- Inspect the final computed
font-weightunder the print context used for PDF generation, not only under the browser’s screen context.
If the computed value is already 700 (or another bold numeric weight) before PDF creation, adding another declaration is unlikely to address the problem; move to engine and font checks.

ABCpdf documentation exposes both Print and Screen media choices. Its Gecko engine supports print and screen stylesheets; the documentation states that Screen with Gecko requires UseScript to be true. Therefore, do not assume that the page you see in a browser and the page ABCpdf converts are using the same CSS branch.
Questions to answer in your conversion code
- Which ABCpdf HTML engine is selected: Gecko or another engine available in your ABCpdf 9 setup?
- Is the media option set to Print or Screen?
- If using Gecko with Screen media, is
UseScriptenabled as required by the documentation? - Does the converter wait long enough for linked stylesheets, web fonts, and script-generated class names to load?
Run two controlled conversions with identical HTML: one with Print media and one with Screen media. Record the computed style and PDF result for each. A difference identifies the media or engine path as a variable; it does not by itself prove which setting is correct for your application.
Check the actual bold font face
CSS weight and visible darkness are related but not identical. ABCpdf’s reference says it attempts to reference an appropriate bold font and, if it cannot locate one, can generate a synthetic bold style using XTextStyle.Bold. This makes font availability and selection worth checking, although the documentation does not establish that missing fonts caused this particular H5 report.
Use a known family while diagnosing
h5 {
font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
font-weight: 700;
}
Choose a family with a locally installed bold face in the account and machine that run ABCpdf. If your page uses a web font, verify that the converter can fetch it, that the font URL is accessible without browser-only authentication, and that the bold face is actually declared. Compare the output with a known installed family; change only the family for this test.
Distinguish weight selection from appearance
Inspect the PDF at 100% and at a larger zoom. Some font substitutions make a genuine bold face appear lighter than the browser’s version. Conversely, synthetic bold can look different from a designed bold face. Preserve the original font family, requested weight, resolved font, and operating-system font inventory in your reproduction notes.

A controlled troubleshooting sequence
- Isolate one H5. Remove scripts, layout frameworks, images, and unrelated headings until the discrepancy remains.
- Capture the converter input. Save the exact HTML after any server-side templating and the CSS files as ABCpdf receives them.
- Test the cascade. Add a late
@media printrule and inspect the computed weight. Remove!importantafter diagnosis if it is not needed. - Confirm media and engine. Record Print versus Screen, the HTML engine, and the Gecko
UseScriptsetting where applicable. - Test a known font. Switch to a reliably installed family with a bold face, keeping size and layout constant.
- Change one variable at a time. Generate a PDF after each change and keep the outputs side by side.
- Document the boundary. Note the ABCpdf 9 version/build, platform, font files, media mode, engine, and the first input that fails.
Common failure modes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely variable | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Browser is bold; PDF is regular | Different media stylesheet | Inspect Print and Screen rules and the converter’s selected media. |
| Inline bold has no visible effect | Font substitution or unavailable bold face | Test a known installed family and verify the converter’s font lookup. |
| Only some H5 elements fail | Cascade or selector specificity | Inspect each heading’s classes, IDs, inherited styles, and later rules. |
| Styles work in one machine but not another | Environment-dependent assets | Compare installed fonts, network access, engine settings, and ABCpdf builds. |
| Screen conversion changes after enabling scripts | Gecko Screen requirement | Confirm UseScript is true and that scripts do not overwrite the heading class. |
What is—and is not—established
The available report documents a browser-versus-ABCpdf mismatch and the author’s unsuccessful stylesheet and inline attempts. ABCpdf documentation confirms that media selection affects stylesheet processing and that bold-font lookup can fall back to synthetic bold. No cited source verifies a case-specific root cause or a successful ABCpdf 9 workaround for this exact heading.
Accordingly, the reliable engineering answer is a decision process: prove which CSS the converter computes, prove which engine and media branch it uses, then prove which font face it embeds or synthesizes. If the minimal case still fails after those checks, include it in a support report rather than asserting that H5 itself is unsupported.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I use 700 or bold for the H5?
Use a numeric value such as 700 while diagnosing so the requested weight is explicit, but verify the resolved font face; the declaration alone cannot prove that ABCpdf selected a bold font.
Does adding !important permanently fix ABCpdf 9?
Not necessarily. It can reveal a cascade conflict, but a wrong media branch, unavailable font, or engine difference can remain after the cascade is forced.
Is H5 unsupported in ABCpdf 9?
The available evidence describes a mismatch affecting some H5 headings, not a general claim that ABCpdf 9 does not support H5.
