First find out whether the silence affects one viewer or the stream for everyone. Then trace the audio from the prerecorded file or mixer, through any capture hardware and encoder, to YouTube. Check YouTube Live Control Room’s health indicator and error timestamps, and compare the encoder preview, a local test recording, and the YouTube stream. That identifies where the signal disappears without treating a muted source, wrong output track, or viewer-side connection as the same problem.

1. Find out who is affected

Ask whether other people can hear the stream, ideally viewers on different internet connections. Also check the stream yourself on another device or connection. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance distinguishes among these cases:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • One viewer cannot hear it: The viewer’s device, browser or app, volume, or internet connection may be responsible.
  • Several viewers on the same connection cannot hear it: A shared network issue may be involved.
  • Viewers on separate connections report silence: Investigate the encoder and the stream being sent to YouTube.

These clues narrow the search; they do not prove a cause. Ask viewers what device and connection they are using before changing the broadcast setup. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting steps.

2. Check YouTube’s stream health and error time

Open the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room and inspect the Health Indicator and any timestamped error messages. YouTube checks the stream it receives; an unresolved problem can continue to appear in the dashboard. Match the error time to your encoder logs or any change made at that point.

A no-audio warning means YouTube is receiving no audio stream. Its error guidance also identifies multiple audio streams, an unsupported audio codec, or more than two audio channels as possible format problems. Some encoders have a separate control or checkbox to enable audio. Check the encoder’s current settings rather than assuming audio is enabled because a source is visible.

Use the specific error to choose what to inspect next. YouTube’s references are Live streaming troubleshooting and live-stream error messages.

3. Confirm the source actually contains sound

For a prerecorded file

Play the exact file being used in the stream on the computer or media player that supplies it. Confirm that the expected section has audible sound, that the player is not muted, and that the file has an audio track. If the playlist contains several files, test the one that is silent rather than relying on another clip as a stand-in.

For a mixer or other audio feed

If the church overlays a live mixer feed on prerecorded video, check the relevant channel’s gain and mute state, then the mixer’s master output. Confirm the output is connected to the input the capture device or computer actually uses. Follow the signal from the originating device and listen again at the next point in the chain; the OBS Project Audio Mixer Guide recommends checking audio at its source and as it reaches OBS.

  • PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.

Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
  • TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
  • SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.

4. Trace the signal into the encoder

Follow the physical and software path one connection at a time. Depending on the setup, it may be: media player or mixer → camera or capture device → operating-system input → encoder source. A setup without capture hardware will have fewer steps. At each stage, confirm that the selected input is the one carrying sound, cables are connected as intended, and the device is not muted.

If the encoder is OBS

Play the media or service audio and watch the meter for the intended source in OBS’s Audio Mixer. If it does not move, check the source selection, source mute, physical level, system and application volume, capture-device audio input selection, and any relevant operating-system permissions. Operating-system and application volume controls can affect what OBS receives. Use the OBS audio mixer guide for the controls available in your setup.

A moving meter only shows that a signal reaches that point in the chain. It does not prove that the signal is assigned to the broadcast output or that viewers can hear it.

5. Check the stream mix and selected audio track

Confirm that the intended source is unmuted and included in the encoder’s stream output. In OBS, inspect Advanced Audio Properties and verify the audio track assigned to the source and the track selected for streaming. In another encoder, find the equivalent routing and output-track controls.

Do not change to a track number based on somebody else’s configuration: defaults and routing vary. A church-stream forum discussion describes one case involving capture-device audio configuration, but that example does not establish the cause in other setups. Check the track the encoder is actually sending.

6. Compare what the encoder sends with what YouTube receives

  1. Listen to the encoder preview. Check whether the intended sound is present at the output, not merely on a source meter.
  2. Make a short local test recording using the same sources. Listen to it from beginning to end. OBS recommends making and checking a normal test recording before going live; YouTube also advises checking the local archive.
  3. Check YouTube’s stream preview and health information. Compare its audio with the encoder preview and recording.
  4. Use the first point where sound is absent to guide the next check. If the source and encoder output are silent, return to source selection and routing. If the encoder and local recording sound right but YouTube does not, inspect the outgoing connection, encoder errors, and CPU load. YouTube recommends testing the outbound connection and contacting the internet provider if the connection shows problems.

If the source and local recording do not explain bad output, YouTube suggests updating an out-of-date encoder or trying another encoder to isolate the problem. If the checks do not resolve it, report the issue to YouTube.

7. Change audio format only when the evidence points there

Do not change a working audio format at random. If YouTube reports a format error, check the encoder’s audio output against the current warning and YouTube’s guidance:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Codec: YouTube’s format guidance expects H.264 video and AAC audio; its error details list AAC or MP3 as supported audio codecs.
  • Audio streams and channels: Send one audio stream, with one channel (mono) or two (stereo), not more than two channels.
  • Bitrate: YouTube Help lists 128 Kbps as a recommended audio bitrate.
  • Sample rate: The warning details recommend 44.1 kHz. The YouTube Live Streaming API encoding guidance lists 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz as recommended sample rates.

These are published recommendations and requirements, not a reason to alter unrelated settings. Follow the current Live Control Room error and the controls available in your encoder.

Common symptoms and next checks

What you observe Where to investigate first
Only one viewer reports silence Ask them to test another device or connection and check their playback volume, app, or browser.
The source plays silently before reaching the encoder Test the exact file or inspect the mixer channel, mute, gain, and master output.
The encoder’s intended-source meter does not move Check input selection, mute, system and application volume, capture-device routing, and permissions.
A meter moves, but the encoder preview or recording is silent Check whether the source is included in the mix and assigned to the selected streaming track.
The encoder preview and local recording sound right, but YouTube does not Inspect YouTube’s health messages, encoder errors and CPU load, and the outgoing network connection.
YouTube reports an audio-format problem Correct the specific codec, stream count, channel count, bitrate, or sample-rate issue identified by the warning.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a church that wants to keep prerecorded material playing around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It does not repair a muted, misrouted, unassigned, or unsupported audio signal, so check the file and its sound before uploading.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home: StreamNeo loops the uploaded material from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to remain on.
  • Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers.
  • It can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free, with no card required (one free day per account).
  • The monthly plan is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are supported in India; card checkout is available worldwide.
