Microsoft Store error 0xC80070422 usually means the Windows Update service is disabled or stopped, not that the app download itself is damaged. On a personal Windows PC, the quickest supported repair is to set Windows Update to Automatic, start it, restart Windows, and try the Store again. If that does not work, reset the Store cache with wsreset.exe, install pending Windows updates, check time and regional settings, and then investigate Store registration, policy, firewall, or proxy restrictions.
What error 0xC80070422 means
Microsoft’s troubleshooting table maps 0x80070422 to “Windows Update service is disabled or stopped.” The Microsoft Store depends on Windows servicing components for app installation and related checks, so a Store message that says Windows Update is turned off is consistent with this service-state error.

The code does not by itself prove that a Store package is corrupt, that Windows is infected, or that your Microsoft account is unusable. Start with the service setting because it is the narrowest, lowest-risk change and the remedy Microsoft lists first.

Before changing anything
- Save open work and use an account with administrator rights if Windows asks for approval.
- Confirm that the problem is the hexadecimal code
0xC80070422; similar-looking Store codes can have different causes. - If the computer belongs to an employer, school, or other organization, do not override a policy without the administrator’s approval. A managed device may intentionally disable Windows Update or the Store.
- Keep the computer connected to the internet while you retry the Store. A proxy, firewall, or filtered network can still block Store endpoints after the service is enabled.
Fix 1: enable and start Windows Update
This is the primary repair and normally takes less than a minute.

- Press Win+R to open the Run dialog.
- Type
services.msc, then select OK. If User Account Control appears, approve it. - In the Services list, locate Windows Update. The list is alphabetized, so selecting the list and typing “Windows Update” can jump to it.
- Double-click Windows Update to open its Properties window.
- Set Startup type to Automatic.
- Look at Service status. If it says Stopped, select Start. If it is already running, leave it running.
- Select Apply, then OK to close the Properties window.
- Restart Windows. After signing in, open Microsoft Store and repeat the installation that produced the error.
If the Startup type is locked, the Start button is unavailable, or the setting changes back after a restart, the PC is probably controlled by policy, security software, or another administrator. Continue with the managed-device checks later in this guide instead of repeatedly forcing the setting.
Fix 2: reset the Microsoft Store cache
A damaged or stale Store cache can prevent the interface from recovering even after Windows Update is running. Resetting the cache does not remove your installed applications.
- Press Win+R.
- Enter
wsreset.exeand select OK. - A blank Command Prompt window opens. Do not close it while the reset runs.
- After about ten seconds, the window closes and Microsoft Store opens automatically.
- Search for the app again and retry the installation.
If the blank window remains open for substantially longer than expected, wait once for the process to finish, then restart Windows and run wsreset.exe again. A brief blank window is normal; it is not an indication that a command failed.
Fix 3: install all pending Windows updates
Microsoft recommends bringing Windows up to date before continuing with more involved Store troubleshooting. Updates can repair servicing components that the Store relies on and may also change the state of a previously disabled service.

- Open Settings from the Start menu.
- Select Windows Update. On some Windows editions this is under Update & Security rather than the current Windows Update page.
- Select Check for updates and allow available updates to download.
- When Windows requests a restart, select Restart now, or restart at a convenient time.
- Return to Windows Update after the restart and check again until no further required updates are offered.
- Open Microsoft Store and test the original app installation.
If Windows Update itself displays an error, record that separate code. It may require a different repair path; the Store code alone does not identify every possible Windows Update failure.
Fix 4: verify time, time zone, and region
Incorrect clock or regional information can interfere with Store launch and service authentication. Microsoft includes these settings among its Store checks.
- Open Settings and choose Time & language (or Time & Language on some releases).
- Open Date & time. Turn on automatic time and automatic time-zone selection when those controls are available, then use Sync now if shown.
- Open Language & region or Region and confirm that the country or region matches where you are using the PC.
- Close Settings, restart Windows, and test Microsoft Store again.
Do not change the region merely to obtain an app that is unavailable in your country. Region changes can affect Store availability, billing, and app licensing; correct an inaccurate setting rather than using it as a workaround.

When the service, cache, updates, and regional settings are correct, the remaining causes are often registration or access restrictions. Microsoft Learn identifies three areas to verify: whether Microsoft Store is registered for the current user, whether policy blocks Store use, and whether firewall or proxy rules block required endpoints.

Confirm that Store use is allowed
- Try opening Microsoft Store from Start while signed in to the affected Windows account. If it opens for one account but not another, the problem may be user-specific registration or policy.
- On a work or school PC, ask the administrator whether Microsoft Store is disabled by organization policy. Do not change policy settings without authorization.
- If family-safety or local restrictions are in use, review them with the account owner. A blocked app category can look like a Store installation failure even when Windows Update is healthy.
Check firewall and proxy paths
- Temporarily note whether the issue occurs only on one network. If Store works on another trusted connection, the original network’s proxy, firewall, DNS filtering, or captive portal may be blocking required endpoints.
- Review Windows proxy settings under Settings > Network & internet > Proxy. Remove a manual proxy only if you know it is not required by your organization.
- Check the active firewall or web-filtering product for blocked Microsoft Store or Windows Update traffic. A security administrator may need to allow the required endpoints.
- After changing a network rule, reconnect to the network and retry the Store. If the restriction is centrally managed, only the administrator can make the lasting correction.
Consider Store registration problems
Store registration is associated with the Windows user profile. If the Store opens but repeatedly fails for one profile, test the same app from another authorized Windows account. A difference between accounts is useful evidence for an administrator; it points away from a system-wide Windows Update outage and toward profile registration or policy.
Fix 6: use winget when the Store interface is unavailable
Microsoft documents Windows Package Manager commands as an alternative installation route in supported situations. This can help when the Store window will not complete an installation, while still using a package source that Windows Package Manager can access.
- Open Windows Terminal or Command Prompt.
- Search for the application by replacing the placeholder with its name:
winget search <App name>. - Review the search results carefully and identify the intended package.
- Install it with
winget install <App name>, using the package name returned by the search when necessary. - Read the confirmation prompts and allow the installation to finish.
winget is not a universal substitute for Microsoft Store licensing or every Store-only package. If the command cannot find the app, reports that no matching package exists, or is blocked by organizational policy, return to the service, policy, and network checks rather than guessing at package identifiers.
Choose the next remedy by risk and scope
| Remedy | Risk | Scope | Technical effort | Administrative control |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Set Windows Update to Automatic and start it | Low; changes one Windows service state | Windows Update service availability | Graphical Services console | May require administrator rights or policy approval |
Run wsreset.exe |
Low; resets Store cache | Microsoft Store cache | Run dialog command | Usually available to the signed-in user |
| Install Windows updates | Moderate; downloads and may restart Windows | System update and servicing components | Settings interface | May be controlled by update policy |
| Correct time and regional settings | Low when correcting inaccurate values | Clock, time zone, and Store region checks | Settings interface | Some controls can be policy-managed |
| Review registration, policy, firewall, or proxy | Varies; network and policy changes can affect other services | User access and Store connectivity | Requires account, network, or administrator investigation | Often requires an organization administrator on managed PCs |
Use winget |
Moderate; installs the selected package from an available source | Application installation path rather than Store repair | Command line | Package sources and policy can restrict use |
What to do when the error returns
The service stops again
Reopen services.msc and check Windows Update after the restart. If it is stopped again or its Startup type has reverted, capture that behavior and contact the device administrator. Repeatedly changing a setting that policy resets will not solve the underlying restriction.

The Store opens but one app still fails
Test a different free app or update. If only one title fails, the issue may be that app’s package, age rating, region availability, account entitlement, or publisher-side availability rather than error 0xC80070422. Keep the Windows Update service enabled while you investigate the individual app.
The Store does not open at all
Run wsreset.exe first, then restart Windows. If the Store remains unavailable, check whether policy blocks it and whether a proxy or firewall is filtering Microsoft endpoints. A managed-PC administrator may need to verify registration and access controls.
winget works but Store does not
This result shows that an installation route is available, but it does not repair the Store’s service, cache, registration, or policy state. Complete the Windows Update and Store checks if you need the Store interface for updates, licensing, or purchases.
When to stop troubleshooting yourself
Escalate to an administrator or Microsoft support when Windows Update cannot be started because of policy, the service repeatedly disables itself, the PC is organization-managed, or firewall and proxy rules are centrally controlled. Provide the exact code, the Windows edition and version, the time the problem began, whether wsreset.exe completed, and whether another network or Windows account changes the result. Those details distinguish a local cache problem from a system-wide service or access restriction.
