Microsoft Store error 0x80070422 usually means the Store cannot complete an availability or servicing check. Microsoft does not assign one universal cause to this code. The practical fix is to work through the checks in order: reset the Store cache, install Windows updates, correct time and region settings, repair or reset the Store app, restore its per-user registration, and then investigate device policy or network filtering. Use winget as a workaround if Store downloads remain blocked.
What error 0x80070422 means
The code is a symptom rather than a diagnosis. A Store launch, installation, or update can fail when cached Store data is damaged, Windows is missing updates, the computer reports the wrong time or region, the Store package is not registered for the current user, an organization has disabled the Store, or a firewall or proxy blocks Microsoft endpoints.

That is why two computers showing the same code can need different fixes. A home PC may recover after wsreset.exe, while a work-managed device may be intentionally blocked by policy. Treat the steps below as a sequence from the least disruptive user-level check to changes that require administrative help.
Before you start
- Record whether the failure occurs when opening Microsoft Store, downloading an app, or installing an update. That symptom helps distinguish a cache problem from a policy or network problem.
- Keep the computer connected to the network while testing Store access. If you are on a managed network, note whether the same account succeeds on another connection.
- Have an administrator available before changing device policy or servicing settings. The cache and app repair steps are normally low-risk; policy and endpoint changes can affect every user on the device.
- If the Store contains unsaved local app data, read the warning shown by Windows before choosing Reset. Reset can clear data held by the Store app.
Fixes for Microsoft Store error 0x80070422
1. Reset the Microsoft Store cache with wsreset.exe
This is the quickest official first check and does not require you to remove the Store app. Press the Windows logo key + R, type wsreset.exe, and select OK.

Microsoft describes the expected behavior this way: “A blank Command Prompt window will open, and after about ten seconds the window will close and Microsoft Store will open automatically.” Do not close that blank window while the reset is running. When it closes, try the original Store action again.
If the window remains open substantially longer than expected, or the Store does not open automatically, restart Windows and repeat the test once. A successful cache reset does not prove that the Store is healthy; it only rules out one common local-cache failure. Continue to the next step if the code returns.
2. Install every pending Windows update
Microsoft lists having the latest Windows update as a core Store launch check. Open Settings, go to Windows Update (on some Windows editions this is under Update & Security), select Check for updates, and install the updates Windows offers.
Restart when Windows requests it, then return to Windows Update and check again. A restart can be required before the Store components and servicing stack are in the state that a Store installation expects. If Windows Update itself reports an error, resolve that update failure first or ask an administrator to service the computer; the Store may continue to fail while the operating system is waiting for a required update.
3. Correct the date, time, time zone, and region
Store licensing and download services depend on a consistent location and clock. In Settings, open Time & language (or Time and language, depending on Windows version), then check the date, time, time zone, and region. Set them to the computer’s actual location rather than a VPN endpoint or a previous travel location.
After correcting a value, close and reopen Microsoft Store. If the PC is domain-managed and the time keeps changing back, do not repeatedly force it manually; the organization’s time service may be enforcing the setting. In that case, report the mismatch to the administrator.
4. Repair the Store app, then reset it if repair fails
Windows provides separate Repair and Reset actions for many built-in apps. Open Settings and go to Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on older Windows 10 builds). Find Microsoft Store, open its Advanced options, and choose Repair.

Repair attempts to correct the app without clearing its local data. Reopen the Store and repeat the action that produced 0x80070422. If it still fails, return to the same page and choose Reset, confirming the warning Windows displays. Reset is more disruptive because it can clear data held by the Store app; it does not change the files belonging to every app installed through the Store.
Use Repair before Reset so that you can identify whether clearing local Store data was necessary. If the Advanced options page is unavailable or the Store is missing from the installed-app list, skip to the registration and policy checks rather than deleting system files manually.
5. Verify Microsoft Store registration for the current user
A Store package can exist on the device but fail to be registered for the signed-in user. Microsoft Learn documents a per-user registration command:
Add-AppxPackage -RegisterByFamilyName -MainPackage Microsoft.WindowsStore_8wekyb3d8bbwe
Open PowerShell under the affected standard user account and run that command exactly as shown. Do not use an elevated PowerShell window for a standard-user registration: Microsoft’s guidance warns that elevation targets the administrator account, so the repair may be applied to the wrong profile.
When the command finishes, open Microsoft Store and test again. If PowerShell reports that the package cannot be found, the Store package may be absent or damaged rather than merely unregistered. If it reports an access or policy error, move to the management-policy check and involve an administrator instead of repeatedly running the command.
6. Check whether management policy intentionally disables the Store
On a work, school, or shared computer, a policy can disable Microsoft Store by design. Microsoft identifies RemoveWindowsStore as a common policy to investigate. Ask the device administrator to inspect the organization’s policy or configuration-service-provider settings and determine whether that control is enabled.

Do not change a managed policy without authorization. Disabling the control locally can violate an organization’s software policy, and it may be reapplied at the next management check. If the administrator confirms that the Store is intentionally blocked, the correct resolution is to use the organization’s approved software channel or request an exception.
7. Check firewall and proxy access to Microsoft endpoints
Store installation and update flows require Microsoft endpoints, including endpoints used by Windows Update. Enterprise firewalls and proxies can block those connections even when ordinary web browsing works.
If the error occurs only on a company, campus, or filtered home network, ask the network administrator to review the firewall and proxy rules for Store and Windows Update traffic. Provide the time of the failed attempt, the operation you tried, and the exact code. The administrator should verify that required Microsoft endpoints are allowed and that the proxy can authenticate the Windows services that make the request.
Do not solve this by turning off the firewall permanently. A temporary, authorized diagnostic change should be made only by the person responsible for the device or network, then reverted immediately. If the Store works on an unfiltered connection but not on the managed network, that comparison is strong evidence of endpoint filtering rather than a damaged local cache.
8. Use winget when the Store download flow is blocked
Microsoft documents Windows Package Manager commands as a workaround for obtaining packages when Store download flows are failing or blocked. Open a terminal and search for the package by name:
winget search <App name>
Review the search results so you select the intended package, then install it with:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →winget install <App name>
Replace <App name> with the application’s actual name. This workaround does not repair Microsoft Store itself; it provides another supported installation path for packages that Windows Package Manager can obtain. If winget cannot find the package or is also blocked by network policy, return to the policy and endpoint checks.
Which fix should you try first?
| Fix | Primary scope | Risk to local data | Administrative access | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
wsreset.exe |
Current Store cache | Low | Normally not required | Store will not launch or a recent cache problem is suspected |
| Windows Update | Operating-system servicing | Low, but a restart may be required | May be required by device policy | Updates are pending or the system is behind on servicing |
| Time and region correction | Current device settings | Low | Usually not required | Date, time zone, or region is wrong |
| Repair | Store app installation | Low | Normally not required | You want to fix the app without clearing its data |
| Reset | Store app installation and local app data | Moderate; Store data can be cleared | Normally not required | Repair did not work and you accept the data warning |
| AppX registration | Current user profile | Low to moderate | Run non-elevated for a standard user; errors may require an administrator | The package exists but is not registered for the affected user |
RemoveWindowsStore policy review |
Device or organization | Policy-dependent | Administrator required | A managed PC may intentionally block Store access |
| Firewall or proxy review | Network and Microsoft endpoints | Policy-dependent | Network administrator usually required | Store works on another network or downloads fail while browsing works |
winget |
Application installation path | Depends on the application | May be required for the selected package | You need an app while Store downloads remain unavailable |
How to diagnose the result of each attempt
The Store opens, but one app still will not install
That pattern points away from a general launch failure. Confirm that Windows Update is current, check the clock and region, and retry the app. If only the download path fails on a managed network, prioritize the firewall and proxy review. Use winget search and winget install for an application that is available through Windows Package Manager.
The Store is missing or closes immediately
Run wsreset.exe, then check Windows updates and the Store entry under Settings > Apps. If the app is present but unavailable to the current profile, run the documented registration command from a non-elevated PowerShell window belonging to that user. A missing package or a policy error requires administrator-level servicing rather than repeated cache resets.
The problem affects every user on the computer
A system-wide symptom makes a per-user cache or registration issue less likely. Ask an administrator to check RemoveWindowsStore, Windows servicing status, and network endpoint access. Do not modify organization policy or firewall rules from a standard account.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe problem appears only on one user account
Start with wsreset.exe, Repair, Reset, and the non-elevated AppX registration command for that account. If other users can open and use the Store on the same PC, document that comparison when requesting support; it narrows the issue to the affected profile rather than the device’s network or global policy.
When administrator or network support is necessary
- The device is owned by an employer or school and policy settings are managed centrally.
RemoveWindowsStoreis enabled or keeps returning after a local change.- PowerShell reports access, package, or policy errors during registration.
- The Store works on an unrestricted connection but fails behind a proxy or enterprise firewall.
- Windows Update cannot complete, leaving the operating system in a pending-servicing state.
Give support the exact error code, the operation that failed, which steps you tried, whether the Store works for another user, and whether the same PC works on another network. Those details are more useful than repeatedly resetting the cache.
Quick Recap
As an optional shortcut after trying the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can check and address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, while also offering settings, cleanup, privacy, vulnerability-check, real-time boost, file-shredder, and crash-log features. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, includes a free trial of at least two days before a paid subscription, complements an antivirus rather than replacing one, and results vary; no tool repairs every crash.
