How to Fix Microsoft Store Error 0x80070057 (“The Parameter Is Incorrect”)

If Microsoft Store shows 0x80070057 while downloading or installing an app, work through Microsoft’s standard sequence: verify the code, sign in, reopen Store, update Windows and Store, repair or reset Store, then reinstall the affected app. The code is generic—it means that one or more arguments supplied to an operation are not valid—so it does not identify one universal cause.

Your title contains 0X800070057, with an extra zero. Microsoft documents 0x80070057 as the relevant HRESULT. Copy the code directly from the Store message or Event Viewer before changing anything; a transcription error can send troubleshooting in the wrong direction.

Check the exact error before troubleshooting

Windows error codes are easy to mistype because they contain a zero, the letter “x,” and hexadecimal digits. The documented value is 0x80070057 (lowercase or uppercase letters do not matter). If Store displays a different value, use that exact value instead of assuming it is the same problem.

  • Copy the code from the Store dialog if possible.
  • If the dialog disappears, open Event Viewer and check the relevant application or AppX deployment entry.
  • Record whether the failure occurs while downloading, installing, updating, or opening an app.
  • Note whether every app fails or only one app or one game is affected.

The phrase “The parameter is incorrect” is the plain-language interpretation of this HRESULT. It does not, by itself, prove that Windows is damaged, that the Store package is corrupt, or that malware is present.

What 0x80070057 means in Microsoft Store

Microsoft’s AppX documentation maps E_INVALIDARG to 0x80070057 and defines it as “One or more arguments are not valid.” During Store activity, an invalid argument can arise from a package, deployment state, account context, or a service or policy that rejects the requested operation. The number is therefore a category of failure rather than a diagnosis.

Microsoft gives an AppX deployment example in which disallowed characters such as a vertical bar (|) in a manifest’s DisplayName or Description prevent AppContainer creation. That example shows why package metadata or deployment state can matter, but it does not establish that the same manifest problem is causing your Store error.

Run Microsoft’s supported first pass

These steps are Microsoft’s general Store-app workflow. They are the safest starting point for 0x80070057, but none is a guaranteed code-specific cure.

  1. Sign in to Microsoft Store

Open Microsoft Store from the Start menu and select the account icon. Sign in with the Microsoft account that should own or use the app. If the Store is already open, sign out, close it, reopen it, and sign in again. A Store session tied to the wrong account can prevent an app from being obtained or updated.

  2. Close and reopen Store

Close every Microsoft Store window. Wait a few seconds, then open Store again and retry the same download. This clears a stuck foreground session without changing installed apps or Store data.

  3. Install pending Windows updates

On Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, and install everything offered. Restart when Windows asks, then retry Store. On Windows 10, use Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install the available updates, restart, and test again.

Do not skip a required restart. Store, AppX deployment, and Windows servicing components can remain in a pending state until the reboot completes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  4. Update Microsoft Store itself

In Windows 11, open Store, select Library, and choose Get updates. Allow Store to update before attempting the problem app again.

Windows 10 uses older labels. Open Store, select See more (the three-dot menu), choose Downloads and updates, and then select Get updates. The older Store interface may also show My Library for apps you already own.

  5. Repair Microsoft Store

Repair is the least destructive app-level reset. In Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Microsoft Store, select its three-dot menu, choose Advanced options, and select Repair. In Windows 10, open Settings > Apps > Apps & features, select Microsoft Store, choose Advanced options, and select Repair if the button is available.

When Repair finishes, open Store and retry the same app. Repair is preferable to Reset when you want to preserve Store app data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  6. Reset Microsoft Store if Repair fails

Return to the same Advanced options page and select Reset. Confirm the warning. Reset removes the Store app’s local data and restores its settings; it does not uninstall every Windows app from the computer. You may need to sign in to Store again afterward.

Open Store, sign in, update the Store from Library > Get updates (or Windows 10’s See more > Downloads and updates), and retry the installation.

  7. Reinstall the affected app

If only one app fails, uninstall that app through Settings > Apps and install it again from Store. Reinstalling is more disruptive than Repair or Reset because it removes the app and may remove locally stored app data. Check the app’s own sync or backup options first if its data matters.

If the same app fails on more than one Windows account or device, record the app name and the exact message. That pattern points toward a package or service issue rather than a temporary Store window.

Use the Windows 10 Store Apps troubleshooter when available

Microsoft’s support workflow lists the Windows Store Apps troubleshooter for Windows 10. Open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, select Windows Store Apps, and run it. Apply any correction it reports, restart if requested, and test the Store again.

The older troubleshooter is not presented as a universal Windows 11 remedy. If the entry is absent, continue with the current Windows and Store update, Repair, Reset, and reinstall steps instead of downloading an unrelated troubleshooter.

If downloads are still blocked

When the first pass changes nothing, separate a one-app problem from a Store-wide block. The following checks come from Microsoft’s download-failure guidance and require more care because they can involve account registration, organization policy, or network administration.

Check whether Store is registered for the current user

Microsoft’s checklist says Microsoft Store must be registered for the user who is attempting the download. If Store opens but downloads consistently fail, have an administrator or support technician verify the per-user Store registration using Microsoft’s documented AppX procedure. Do not copy a registration command from an untrusted forum: a command that targets the wrong package or user can create a second problem.

Try WinGet for an app that is available there

Microsoft’s checklist suggests the Windows Package Manager as an alternative path when a Store download is failing. In a terminal, search for the app by name:

winget search <App name>

If the result is the correct publisher and package, install it with:

winget install <App name>

Replace <App name> with the actual app name. Review the result before accepting an installation; similarly named packages are not interchangeable. WinGet is an alternative acquisition route, not proof that the Store error has been repaired.

Check organization policy

On a work, school, or managed family computer, a policy may intentionally restrict Microsoft Store. Microsoft identifies the RemoveWindowsStore policy as blocking users from opening Microsoft Store. Importantly, Microsoft also notes that Store apps may still be able to update while this policy is enabled. Therefore:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • If Store will not open at all, ask the organization’s administrator whether the policy is enabled.
  • If Store opens but a particular download fails, do not assume RemoveWindowsStore is the cause; investigate registration, package, and network conditions too.
  • Do not change a work or school policy without administrator approval.

Review firewall and proxy access

Store downloads depend on network access to Microsoft Store and Windows Update services. Microsoft’s checklist says firewall or proxy rules must allow the required Store and Windows Update endpoints. Temporarily switching security controls off is not a reliable diagnostic and can expose the computer. Instead, ask the network administrator to confirm that the required Microsoft endpoints are allowed, that the proxy is authenticated correctly, and that HTTPS inspection is not breaking the connection.

On a home network, compare the result on another trusted connection if one is available. If the download works on the alternate connection, provide the failing network’s firewall or proxy details to its administrator rather than repeatedly resetting Store.

Confirm Windows Update connectivity

Because Microsoft Store relies on Windows servicing and update components, blocked Windows Update endpoints can leave downloads or installs in a pending or failed state. Verify that Windows Update itself can check for and retrieve updates. If Windows Update also fails, repair that service or policy first through your organization’s support process; repeating Store resets will not correct a network or update-endpoint block.

When the failure affects only a game

A game-only failure can follow a different path from a general Store download problem. A Microsoft Q&A case describes reinstalling Gaming Services as a possible remedy for a Store game installation failure. Treat that as case-specific community guidance, not as Microsoft’s universal prescription for every 0x80070057 occurrence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use this branch only when ordinary apps install successfully and the error is limited to a game that depends on Gaming Services. Record the game name, Windows version, and whether Gaming Services itself is present before making changes. If several unrelated Store apps fail, return to the account, Store registration, policy, firewall, and Windows Update checks instead.

Choose the least destructive repair path

The table below shows how the main options differ. Start at the top and move downward only when the earlier step has not helped.

Path Scope Effect Best use
Close and reopen Store One Store session Reversible Store is open but a download is stuck
Update Windows or Store System or Store components Supported maintenance Updates are pending or Store is out of date
Repair Microsoft Store app Reversible app repair Store opens but behaves incorrectly
Reset Microsoft Store app data Removes local Store data and settings Repair did not change the error
Reinstall affected app One app Destructive to that app’s local installation Only one app or package fails
Policy, registration, firewall, or proxy review User, organization, or network May require administrator action Store-wide failures or managed devices
Gaming Services reinstall Game-specific services Case-specific service change Only a dependent game fails

How to tell which branch fits

Store will not open

Check account access, Windows updates, Store Repair or Reset, and the RemoveWindowsStore policy. If the computer is managed, ask the administrator before changing policy or network settings.

Store opens, but every download fails

Prioritize Store registration, Windows Update connectivity, and firewall or proxy rules. A Store-wide failure is less consistent with one app’s package metadata.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Only one ordinary app fails

Complete the first-pass sequence, then reinstall that app. WinGet may provide an alternative installation route if the package is listed and the publisher is correct.

Only one game fails

Check the game’s dependency on Gaming Services and consider the case-specific reinstall guidance described above. Do not treat that step as a general cure for other Store apps.

The code changes after an update

Stop using the old troubleshooting path and record the new HRESULT exactly. Error numbers that look similar can represent different components or operations.

When to stop and seek administrator or Microsoft support

  • The device belongs to a workplace, school, or managed family account and policy settings are involved.
  • Windows Update and Store both fail to reach their services.
  • Store registration appears missing or damaged for more than one user.
  • Reset and reinstall remove the app but the same package error returns.
  • The error occurs during deployment of several unrelated AppX packages.

Have the exact HRESULT, app name, Windows edition and version, account type, and the step at which the failure occurs ready for support. That information is more useful than reporting only “Store is denied.”

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for more than 100 common Windows issues, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, and can provide an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; a free trial by category lasts at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus rather than replacing it, results vary, and no utility repairs every Store failure.
