The code in the title, 0X080070057, is probably a typo for 0x80070057, the form reported in Microsoft community and support material for Microsoft Store installation and update failures. It does not identify one universal cause. Start with a restart, then follow Microsoft’s order: sign in, check compatibility and region, update Windows and the Store, clear the Store cache, repair before resetting, and reinstall the affected app.
What Microsoft Store error 0x80070057 means
Microsoft Store error 0x80070057 appears when the Store cannot install or update an app. The hexadecimal code is case-insensitive, so 0X80070057 and 0x80070057 describe the same value. The title’s 0X080070057 contains an additional zero after the X; that exact spelling is not the usual Store code. Check the number shown in the Store message, Event Viewer, or any support ticket before troubleshooting.

The code is an outcome, not a diagnosis. Microsoft guidance does not assign one root cause or promise one universal fix. A Microsoft account, country or region setting, family restriction, device compatibility, a pending Windows restart, a damaged Store cache, app data, or blocked Windows Update connectivity can each prevent an install or update. The sequence below narrows those possibilities while starting with the least disruptive actions.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do these checks before changing anything
- Save work and close the Store. Do not leave an installation running while you reset or repair the app.
- Confirm the exact app. Note whether the failure affects one app, several apps, or every Store download. That distinction determines whether to focus on the app listing or on Store and Windows services.
- Use a stable network. If you are on a metered, captive-portal, VPN, proxy, or managed connection, record that fact; it may explain a later network test.
- Keep account details available. Microsoft Store downloads normally require you to be signed in to a Microsoft account, and a work or school device may apply additional policy.
Step 1: Restart Windows and Microsoft Store
Close and reopen the Store
- Save any work in other applications.
- Close every Microsoft Store window.
- Open Microsoft Store again from Start and retry the download once.
A simple restart can release a locked package, complete a pending servicing operation, or reload Store services. Do not skip the Windows restart if the computer recently installed updates. Microsoft notes that a PC may need to restart before Store apps can be installed.

Restart the computer
- Select Start > Power > Restart.
- After Windows loads, wait for the desktop and network connection to become ready.
- Open Microsoft Store, go to the affected listing, and try again.
If the same code returns, continue in order rather than repeatedly retrying an unchanged installation.
Step 2: Sign in and verify account, region, and compatibility
Sign in to the Microsoft account used by the Store
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select the account or profile icon near the top of the window.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account you use for Store apps. If another account is shown, confirm that it is the intended account before starting the install.
An account that is signed out, unauthorized for the app, or different from the one that owns an app can stop an installation without indicating that the account is the cause.
Check country or region and family restrictions
Some Store listings are unavailable in particular countries or regions. Family settings can also restrict an app or require an organizer’s approval. Verify the region under Settings > Time & language > Language & region in Windows 11, or Settings > Time & Language > Region in Windows 10. Use the region in which you actually reside; changing it merely to obtain a listing can affect other Store content and account behavior.
Read the app’s requirements
On the app’s Store page, check the supported Windows edition, processor architecture, age or family rating, and other listed requirements. An app can be unavailable because the device does not meet its compatibility rules even when the Store itself opens normally. If the page says the app is not available for your device or region, troubleshooting the cache will not make that particular listing installable.
Step 3: Install Windows updates, then restart
- Open Settings > Windows Update in Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update in Windows 10.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates, including any servicing or Microsoft Store-related updates offered by Windows.
- When prompted, restart the computer. If no prompt appears, restart manually after installation finishes.
Store installation and updating depend on current Windows components. A download that fails before the restart can succeed after Windows finishes servicing and reloads its services. Do not treat a pending reboot as optional when Windows Update reports one.
Step 4: Update Microsoft Store itself
Windows 11
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select Library in the left navigation.
- Select Get updates.
- Let Store updates finish, then return to the affected app and try the installation again.
Windows 10
Open Microsoft Store and use its Downloads and updates or equivalent updates view, depending on the Store version. Select the command that checks for Store updates, install what is offered, and retry the app. Microsoft has changed some labels between Windows releases, but the purpose is the same: update the Store client before repairing or resetting it.
Updating the Store is different from updating an app. Do both when both options are available.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStep 5: Reset the Store cache with wsreset.exe
The Store cache can retain incomplete or stale information after a failed download. Microsoft’s cache-reset command does not require you to remove the Store app.
- Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
- Enter
wsreset.exeexactly, then select OK or press Enter. - A blank Command Prompt window appears. Do not close it manually.
- Microsoft says the window closes after about ten seconds and Microsoft Store opens automatically.
- When Store opens, locate the app and retry the installation or update.
The blank window is expected; it is not an indication that the command failed. If it remains open substantially longer than the behavior Microsoft describes, close it, restart Windows, and continue with the repair step. Avoid downloading replacement scripts from random sites: the built-in wsreset.exe is the relevant command.
Step 6: Repair first, then reset the Store or affected app
Windows provides two different recovery actions. Repair attempts to correct the app without deleting its data. Reset is more disruptive: Microsoft Learn states that it permanently deletes app data and reinstalls the app fresh. Local settings, sign-in state, or offline data that are not synchronized may be lost.
Repair Microsoft Store
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11. In Windows 10, open Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
- Search for Microsoft Store.
- Select the three-dot menu in Windows 11, or select the app and then Advanced options in Windows 10.
- Select Advanced options, then Repair.
- Open Microsoft Store and test the original install or update.
Reset Microsoft Store only if Repair fails
- Return to the same Microsoft Store > Advanced options page.
- Select Reset and confirm the warning.
- Wait for Windows to complete the reset, then open Store and sign in again if requested.
- Retry the affected download.
Resetting the Store can remove Store-specific data, but it does not guarantee that an incompatible listing or blocked network will become available. Use it after Repair, not as the first action.

If the Store works for other apps but one app repeatedly returns 0x80070057, apply the same path to that app: Settings > Apps > Installed apps > [app] > Advanced options > Repair, followed by Reset only if Repair does not help. Read the app’s warning before resetting because locally stored data may be deleted.

Step 7: Reinstall the affected app
After updating, clearing the cache, and repairing or resetting, reinstall the app through the Store rather than repeatedly selecting Update.
- Open Microsoft Store and select Library.
- Find the affected app in the library or search for its Store listing.
- Select Install. If the button shows a download or cloud icon, select that instead.
- Wait for the installation to complete before launching the app.
Reinstallation replaces the app package. It may remove local app data, depending on the app’s design, so check the publisher’s own backup or sync instructions when the app stores files locally.
Step 8: Check Windows Update and network dependencies
A Store download is not isolated from Windows servicing. Microsoft Learn says Store installation and updates require the relevant Windows Update endpoints to be reachable. A proxy, firewall, VPN, endpoint-security rule, or managed-device policy can block those connections while ordinary web browsing still works.
Test the connection without weakening security
- Open a normal browser page to confirm that the connection is active.
- If you use a VPN, disconnect it temporarily only if your organization’s policy allows that, then retry.
- Check Settings > Network & internet > Proxy and confirm that an unexpected manual proxy is not enabled.
- On a managed work or school computer, ask the administrator whether Windows Update and Microsoft Store traffic is restricted. Do not bypass a company firewall or policy yourself.
- Check Windows Update again. If Windows Update itself cannot search or download, resolve that service or policy problem before expecting Store updates to work.
Do not permanently disable a firewall or security product as a test. If a temporary, policy-approved change identifies the blocker, restore protection immediately and have the administrator create the appropriate rule.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose the least disruptive fix first
| Action | Primary scope | Disruption and data risk | Access or dependency | Reversibility |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Close and reopen Store | Current Store session | Very low; no app data change | Store access | Fully reversible |
| Restart Windows | Pending services and updates | Low; save work first | Ability to restart the PC | Fully reversible |
| Update Windows and Store | System and Store components | Low, but installation time varies | Network and Windows Update access | Updates may not be easily rolled back |
wsreset.exe |
Store cache | Low; cache is rebuilt | Run dialog access | Reversible by normal Store use |
| Repair | Store or one affected app | Low; designed to preserve app data | Settings access | Generally reversible |
| Reset | Store or one affected app | Higher; permanently deletes app data | Settings access and possible sign-in again | Not reversible for deleted local data |
| Reinstall | One affected app | Higher; local data may be removed | Store account and network | Package can be installed again, but deleted local data may not return |
This order balances scope and risk: restart and cache reset affect the least, Repair comes before Reset, and reinstall is reserved for an app package that still cannot be restored.
Use the symptom to choose the next branch
Only one app fails
Open the app’s Store listing and check region, age or family restrictions, device compatibility, and publisher notes. Repair or reset that app, then reinstall it from Library. If every other app installs normally, a package or listing problem specific to that publisher is more plausible than a Store-wide failure. Contact the publisher through the support link on the app’s Store listing if the listing remains unavailable or the package repeatedly fails.
Several apps or every app fails
Prioritize Windows Update, the restart, Store updates, wsreset.exe, and Store Repair or Reset. Then investigate proxy, VPN, firewall, and managed-device policy. Reinstalling each app one by one is inefficient when the infrastructure shared by all downloads is the problem.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The Store will not open at all
Run wsreset.exe first, then restart Windows and apply the Installed apps repair path to Microsoft Store. If the Store still does not open, use Microsoft Support rather than deleting system components or downloading unofficial Store packages.
The error began immediately after an update
Restart even if Windows appears to be finished, confirm that Windows Update shows no pending restart, and update Microsoft Store. A partial servicing state can prevent app installation until the restart and remaining updates complete.
The device belongs to an employer or school
Policy may control Store access, app licensing, proxy settings, and Windows Update endpoints. Capture the exact code and the step that fails, then ask the administrator to check policy and connectivity. Do not reset a managed app if doing so could remove work data without approval.
When to stop troubleshooting locally
Escalate after the sequence has been completed and the same code persists, especially when Windows Update also fails or the Store reports a region, licensing, or compatibility restriction. Use Microsoft’s Support or Get Help channel for Windows and Store servicing. For a single app, use the publisher-support link shown on that app’s Store listing.

Include useful evidence in the request:
- The exact code as displayed, including whether it is
0x80070057or another value. - Windows edition and version, and whether the computer is personal or managed.
- The app name, Store listing region, and whether other apps install successfully.
- Which steps you completed: restart, Windows and Store updates,
wsreset.exe, Repair, Reset, and reinstall. - Whether a VPN, proxy, firewall rule, metered network, or organization policy is involved.
This information lets support distinguish an app-specific package problem from a Store, account, or Windows Update dependency without repeating every basic check.
Quick Recap
A compact checklist
- Verify that the intended code is
0x80070057; the title’s extra zero is likely a typo. - Close Store and restart Windows, particularly after a recent update.
