What’s actually slowing this PC down?

If Microsoft Store shows 0x80070057—sometimes typed as 0X800070057—reset the Store cache first, then install Windows updates, verify time and region settings, repair or reset the Store app, and check Store registration and network policies. If Windows components may be damaged, run DISM followed by System File Checker. Confirm the exact code on your PC before changing anything, because the extra zero in 0X800070057 is not the code Microsoft documents.
What the code means and why the spelling matters
Microsoft’s Windows troubleshooting material documents 0x80070057 as an update-installation failure associated with corrupted files or incorrect system configuration. The title form 0X800070057 contains an extra zero. It may be a transcription error, a formatting difference in a third-party message, or a different code altogether. Do not assume the two strings are interchangeable: write down the complete message exactly as Windows displays it.

Microsoft Store problems can occur at different stages, and the stage determines which fix is most relevant:
Recommended Free Tools
- Launch: Store does not open, closes immediately, or shows an error before the home page appears.
- Download: an app remains at “Starting,” “Pending,” or another non-progress state.
- Install: the download completes but installation fails.
- Update: an installed app or Store itself will not update.
Also note whether every Store app fails or only one title, whether the account is a standard user or an administrator, and whether the computer connects directly to the internet or through a proxy, managed network, or firewall. These details prevent you from applying a system-wide repair when the problem is limited to one app or one network path.

Before troubleshooting: capture the facts
Record the following before you reset anything. Keeping this information makes it easier to tell whether a step changed the symptom and gives Microsoft Support useful diagnostics if you need to escalate.
- The exact code and full wording, including whether it is
0x80070057or another value. - Your Windows edition and build number. Press Windows + R, enter
winver, and select OK to display the version information. - The Store action that fails: launch, download, installation, or update.
- Whether the issue affects all apps or a single app.
- Whether other internet-dependent applications work on the same connection.
- Whether the PC is managed by an employer, school, family-safety policy, proxy, or security appliance.
Close other Store windows before beginning. If you are using a metered or unstable connection, switch to a reliable network for the test, but do not change firewall or proxy policy permanently until you know that policy is the cause.
Fix 1: reset the Microsoft Store cache with wsreset.exe
A damaged or stale Store cache can prevent the Store from launching, downloading, or updating. Microsoft’s support procedure uses the built-in wsreset.exe utility; it does not require you to delete folders manually.

- Type
wsreset.exe. - Select OK.
- Wait while a blank Command Prompt window appears. Microsoft says it closes after about ten seconds and Microsoft Store opens automatically.
- Try the same Store action that produced the error.
Do not close the blank window immediately. The utility is working even though it does not show a progress message. If Store does not open automatically after the window closes, open it from the Start menu and test again. A cache reset does not uninstall your Store apps, but it also does not repair damaged Windows system files; continue to the later steps if the code returns.
Fix 2: install Windows updates and correct regional settings
Store components depend on the Windows servicing stack and on regional settings used for licensing, availability, and date handling. Microsoft’s Store launch checklist recommends installing pending updates and checking time, location, language, and region configuration.
Install all available Windows updates
- Open Settings from the Start menu.
- Select Windows Update (on some Windows 10 builds, select Update & Security, then Windows Update).
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every available update, including a required restart. Repeat the check after restarting until Windows reports that no further updates are available.
- Open Microsoft Store and retry the operation.
If an update itself fails with 0x80070057, run the Windows Update troubleshooter from the Windows Update settings page before returning to Store troubleshooting. The code is documented by Microsoft among update-installation failures, so a servicing problem can affect both Windows Update and Store operations.
Verify time, language, and location
- Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
- Turn on automatic time and select Sync now when that option is available. Confirm the time zone is correct for your physical location.
- Open Settings > Time & language > Language & region (Windows 10 may label this Time & Language > Region).
- Check the country or region and the Windows display language. Use the values that match your actual location and account.
- Restart Windows, then test Store again.
A region change can alter which apps are offered, so do not switch countries merely to bypass an unavailable title. Correct the setting, test, and record the original value if the PC is managed by an organization.
Fix 3: repair or reset the Microsoft Store app
Windows provides separate Repair and Reset actions for Store. Repair attempts to correct the app without removing its stored data; Reset is more extensive and clears the app’s data. Use Repair first.

- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps. On some Windows 10 versions, open Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
- Find Microsoft Store in the list. Select the three-dot menu next to it, then choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair and wait for Windows to finish.
- Open Store and retry the failed action.
- If the error remains, return to the same page and select Reset. Confirm the reset when Windows asks.
- Launch Store, sign in again if prompted, and retry the download or update.
Resetting Store can remove its local app data and preferences, so expect to sign in again or reapply Store-specific settings. It does not replace the Windows component repair performed by DISM and SFC; if Reset changes nothing, continue rather than repeating it.
Fix 4: check Store registration, account access, and download policies
Microsoft’s Store troubleshooting checklist for download and update failures includes verifying that Store is registered for the current user and that policy does not block Store downloads or updates. This branch is especially important on work, school, or family-managed PCs.
Check the account and permissions
- Open Microsoft Store and confirm that you are signed in with the intended Microsoft account. If only one app fails, verify that the app is available to that account and region.
- If another Windows user account is available, test Store there. A failure limited to one profile points toward per-user registration or profile data rather than a machine-wide fault.
- Ask the administrator before changing settings on a managed PC. Organization policies can intentionally disable Store installation or updates.
Review policy and security software
- Check whether a family-safety, business-management, or local policy blocks Microsoft Store downloads, app installation, or automatic updates.
- Review firewall and proxy settings. A proxy that requires authentication, a filtering gateway, or a firewall rule that blocks required Store endpoints can leave downloads pending or produce a generic error.
- If you recently installed or changed network-security software, temporarily test on a permitted direct connection according to the administrator’s rules. Do not disable protection on an unmanaged PC as a permanent fix.
Use an alternative package path when appropriate
Microsoft Learn’s checklist notes that winget can be considered for package installation. This is a diagnostic alternative, not a repair for Store itself. Use it only for an app that is available through the Windows Package Manager and only when you understand which publisher and package you are selecting. If winget also fails, record its message; the result can help distinguish a Store-specific problem from a broader network, account, or servicing issue.

Fix 5: repair Windows components and system files
Use component repair when the error affects more than one app, returns after cache and Store reset, or appears alongside Windows Update failures. Microsoft’s guidance is to run Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) first and then System File Checker (SFC). DISM repairs the component store that SFC uses as a source.
Run DISM from an elevated Command Prompt
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command exactly, including the spaces:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Allow the command to finish. It may pause at a percentage for a while; do not close the window solely because progress appears to stop. Read the final message. If DISM reports that it repaired the component store, continue with SFC. If it reports that the source files could not be found or another error, save that code for escalation instead of repeatedly running the same command.
Run System File Checker after DISM
- In the same administrator Command Prompt, enter:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent and displays its result.
- Restart Windows after both commands complete.
- Open Microsoft Store and repeat the original operation.
SFC may report that it found and repaired files, found no integrity violations, or found files it could not repair. Each result is useful: a clean result makes corruption less likely, while an unrepaired-file result supports escalation with the exact message. Do not claim success until the same Store action works after the restart.
Choose the next step by symptom
| Observed failure | Most relevant first action | What to check next if it fails |
|---|---|---|
| Store will not open | Run wsreset.exe, then install Windows updates and verify time and region. |
Repair or reset Microsoft Store; then run DISM and SFC if the issue is system-wide. |
| One app will not download or install | Check account, region, app availability, and Store sign-in. | Test another app, review policy and network filtering, and consider winget if the package is available. |
| Every app remains pending | Reset the Store cache and verify the network path. | Check proxy, firewall, and managed-download policies; repair or reset Store. |
| Apps download but will not install or update | Install Windows updates and repair Store. | Run DISM then sfc /scannow; check whether policy blocks updates. |
| 0x80070057 also appears in Windows Update | Run the Windows Update troubleshooter and complete pending updates. | Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC, then retry Store. |
| Problem affects only one Windows profile | Check Store registration and account access for that user. | Test another profile and involve the device administrator if registration is policy-controlled. |
Common pitfalls that can make the problem persist
- Using the wrong code: the extra zero in 0X800070057 may lead you to a troubleshooting page for a different error. Recheck the original dialog, event, or update history entry.
- Stopping wsreset too soon: the blank window is expected. Let it close on its own and allow Store to reopen.
- Running SFC before DISM: Microsoft’s sequence is DISM first, then SFC. SFC depends on the component store that DISM repairs.
- Changing region as a workaround: an incorrect region can create licensing and availability problems of its own. Use the setting that matches your location.
- Repeating a reset without testing: after each repair, repeat the same Store action and note the result. Otherwise you cannot tell which change mattered.
- Ignoring managed-network controls: a proxy or organizational policy can reapply after every local repair. Ask the administrator to verify Store registration and permitted endpoints.
- Deleting Store files manually: unsupported folder deletion can create a second problem. Use
wsreset.exeand the Settings repair/reset controls instead.
When to contact Microsoft Support
Escalate after you have confirmed the exact code, reset the cache, installed updates, checked regional settings, repaired or reset Store, reviewed account and network policy, and completed the DISM/SFC sequence where appropriate. Microsoft’s Store guidance directs users to contact Microsoft Support when self-help steps do not resolve the issue.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsInclude a concise diagnostic summary:
- The exact error string and where it appears.
- Windows edition, version, and build.
- Whether the failure is at launch, download, installation, or update.
- Whether one app or every Store app is affected.
- The result of
wsreset.exe, Store Repair, and Store Reset. - The final DISM and SFC messages, if you ran them.
- Whether the PC uses a proxy, firewall filter, managed policy, or nonstandard account.
Do not include passwords, authentication tokens, or personal files in a support request. If the machine is managed, involve the organization’s administrator before changing policy or network controls.
