Microsoft documents the Store and Windows servicing code as 0x80070057. The string 0X0070057 in the question may be a transcription error: it is missing the second 8. Copy the code directly from the Store dialog before troubleshooting. Then reset the Store cache with wsreset.exe, install pending Windows updates, verify time and location settings, repair or reset the Store app, check Store registration and network endpoints, and finally investigate the Microsoft Store Install Service or Windows Update if the same code appears there. No single cause or guaranteed fix applies to every PC.

First, verify the code and the failure scope

Open the error dialog again and copy the code character by character. Microsoft’s current support material repeatedly uses 0x80070057. A leading zero, the letter x, and the two eight characters matter; 0X0070057 is not documented as a separate Microsoft Store code in the available guidance. If your dialog really shows a different value, use that exact value when contacting Microsoft or the app publisher.

Also note what fails. A Store window that will not open points to a different layer than a single game that will not update. The scope helps you choose the least invasive next step.

What you see Likely scope to check first Start with
Microsoft Store does not open at all Cache, Windows updates, time or location settings wsreset.exe, then updates and regional settings
One app will not install or update That app’s package or publisher service Store repair/reset, then the publisher’s support channel
Every Store app fails to download Store registration, Install Service, firewall or proxy endpoints Registration and network checks after cache reset
The same code appears while Windows itself updates Windows servicing, permissions, configuration or corrupted system files Windows Update troubleshooter and System File Checker

The code is associated in Microsoft guidance with possibilities such as corrupted files, permissions problems, incorrect configuration, blocked network endpoints and service-state issues. Those are possible contributors, not a diagnosis of your particular machine.

Prepare before changing Store settings

  • Save open work and close the Store and any installer windows.
  • Connect to the network you normally use. If the PC is managed by an employer or school, firewall, proxy and Store policies may be controlled by an administrator.
  • Have an administrator account available for Windows repair commands and service changes.
  • If only one app is affected, record its name and version. That distinction will matter if the Store itself proves healthy.

1. Reset the Microsoft Store cache with wsreset.exe

This is the safest first action because it clears the Store’s local cache without asking you to remove installed apps. Microsoft’s end-user instructions describe the expected behavior precisely.

  1. Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Enter wsreset.exe and select OK.
  3. A blank Command Prompt window should open. Do not close it manually; Microsoft says it normally closes after about ten seconds.
  4. Microsoft Store should open automatically when the reset finishes.
  5. Try the original install or update again. If the Store opens but the download still fails, continue to the next layer rather than repeatedly running the reset.

If no Store window appears after the Command Prompt closes, restart Windows once and test the Store again. A cache reset cannot repair a missing registration, a blocked endpoint or a disabled service, so a failed reset does not identify the root cause by itself.

2. Install Windows updates and correct time and location

Microsoft lists current Windows updates and accurate time and location among the first checks for a Store that will not open or download. Store authentication and package delivery can fail when the system clock or regional configuration is wrong.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings with Win + I.
  2. On Windows 11, select Windows Update. On Windows 10, select Update & Security, then Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates, install every available update, and restart when Windows requests it. Recheck once after the restart if updates were installed in stages.
  4. Return to Settings and open Time & language (Windows 11) or Time & Language (Windows 10).
  5. In Date & time, turn on automatic time and time-zone settings where those controls are available, then use Sync now if shown.
  6. Open Language & region or Region and confirm that the country or region matches your actual location and the Store account you use.
  7. Restart the PC and test the Store.

Do not change to an unrelated region merely to bypass an availability message. Region changes can alter which apps, prices and content the Store presents; correct the setting only when it is inaccurate.

3. Repair Microsoft Store, then reset it if needed

Windows provides separate Repair and Reset actions for many built-in apps. Repair attempts to correct the app installation while preserving its data. Reset is more disruptive and clears the Store’s local app data, so use it only when Repair does not help.

Windows 11

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find Microsoft Store, select its three-dot menu, and choose Advanced options.
  3. Select Repair, wait for Windows to finish, then open Microsoft Store and retry the download.
  4. If the error remains, return to the same page and select Reset. Confirm the prompt, reopen the Store, sign in if asked, and test again.

Windows 10

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
  2. Select Microsoft Store, choose Advanced options, and select Repair.
  3. If Repair fails, use Reset, confirm, and retry the installation.

The Repair-then-Reset sequence is documented in Microsoft-hosted community guidance for this code, so treat it as practical troubleshooting rather than a guaranteed remedy. Resetting may require you to sign in again and can remove Store-specific local data; it does not uninstall your other Windows applications.

4. Check Store registration, downloads and network endpoints

Microsoft Learn’s advanced Store-download checklist separates three questions: is Store registered for the current user, can it launch and download, and are required network endpoints reachable? Work through them in that order.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm that Store is registered for the affected user

Sign in with the same Windows user who sees the error and open Microsoft Store from the Start menu. If Store opens for another account but not yours, the problem is likely user-specific registration or data rather than a system-wide download outage. Microsoft’s checklist calls for verifying Store registration for that user. Use the registration procedure in your Windows edition’s Microsoft support documentation, and restart Windows before testing again.

Avoid deleting package folders or changing ownership in WindowsApps as a first response. Those folders are protected, and manual permission changes can create additional Store failures.

Test launch and download separately

  1. Open the Store and browse a free, small app that is available in your region.
  2. Try to start its download. Note whether the Store fails before the download begins, pauses at a specific percentage, or completes but fails during installation.
  3. If other apps download successfully, the original app’s package, age rating, device requirement or publisher service may be the limiting factor. Contact that publisher with the exact code and the steps already attempted.
  4. If every app fails, continue with the network and service checks below.

Check firewall and proxy access

Store downloads rely on Microsoft endpoints. A firewall, filtering product or proxy that blocks a required endpoint can leave the Store open while preventing downloads. On a personal PC, review the active firewall and proxy settings for recently added blocks. On a managed PC, ask the administrator to verify that Microsoft Store and Windows Update endpoints required by Microsoft’s checklist are allowed.

Do not turn off security controls permanently to test this. If an administrator temporarily changes a rule for diagnosis, restore the policy after the test. A successful download only while protection is disabled indicates a configuration issue that should be corrected at the policy or allow-list level.

Use an alternative installer only as a diagnostic

Microsoft’s Store troubleshooting material lists winget as an alternative for obtaining supported apps. If the same app installs through an approved winget source while Store downloads fail, the result points toward the Store client or its network path rather than the application files themselves. Availability varies by app and region, and an alternative install does not repair Store registration.

5. Check the Microsoft Store Install Service

The Microsoft Store Install Service handles part of the installation workflow. Microsoft-hosted community guidance for 0x80070057 recommends checking it when Store operations fail. This is a service-state check, not proof that the service caused the error.

  1. Press Win + R, enter services.msc, and select OK.
  2. In the Services window, locate Microsoft Store Install Service.
  3. Read its status. If it is stopped, select it and choose Start. If it is running, choose Restart from the context menu or the left action pane.
  4. Open its properties and confirm that it has not been deliberately disabled. Leave the startup configuration at the Windows default unless your organization has a documented policy.
  5. Close Services, restart Windows, and test a Store download.

If Windows refuses to start the service, records an access-denied message, or stops it again immediately, note the exact message. That pattern points to permissions, policy or broader Windows servicing problems; repeatedly forcing the service is unlikely to solve it.

6. Follow the Windows Update path when servicing is involved

If 0x80070057 appears while Windows is installing an update—or both Windows Update and Store downloads fail—use the Windows servicing branch. Microsoft lists this code among Windows Update installation failures and associates it with corrupted files, permissions or incorrect configuration.

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

  1. On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  2. Find Windows Update and select Run.
  3. Apply any recommended correction, restart, and check Windows Update again.
  4. On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, select Windows Update, and run the troubleshooter.

Scan protected system files

Microsoft recommends System File Checker when corrupted files may be involved. Run it from an elevated terminal:

  1. Open Start and type Command Prompt or Terminal.
  2. Choose Run as administrator and approve the User Account Control prompt.
  3. Enter sfc /scannow and press Enter.
  4. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Do not close the window while the scan is running.
  5. Read the result, restart Windows, install any pending updates, and then retry Microsoft Store.

System File Checker can report that it found no integrity violations, repaired files, or could not repair some files. Record that result rather than assuming the Store issue is solved; it determines whether you should continue with Microsoft Support or a deeper Windows servicing diagnosis.

Choose the next step by symptom instead of repeating fixes

Store still will not open

After wsreset.exe, updates, time/location checks and Repair/Reset, focus on registration and user scope. Test with the affected account, verify that required endpoints are not blocked, and check the Install Service. If registration cannot be restored using Microsoft’s documented procedure, contact Microsoft Support with the exact code and the outcome of each step.

Store opens, but one app fails

Do not keep resetting the entire Store if other apps install normally. Check the app’s device requirements, region availability and publisher status, then contact the publisher with the error code. A publisher may need to correct a package or account entitlement that Windows cannot repair locally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Every app fails, and Windows Update also reports the code

Complete the Windows Update troubleshooter and sfc /scannow path, then review firewall/proxy policy and the Install Service. If failures persist, Microsoft Support can determine whether a servicing repair or account-specific investigation is appropriate.

When to stop troubleshooting locally

  • The code changes between attempts or does not match 0x80070057; provide Microsoft or the publisher with a screenshot and the copied code.
  • The PC is managed and you cannot change proxy, firewall, service or update policy; involve the administrator rather than bypassing controls.
  • System File Checker cannot repair files, Windows Update fails repeatedly, or multiple Windows components break at once.
  • Only one app remains affected after Store downloads work for other apps; contact that app’s publisher.

Keep a short record of the Windows edition, the affected user account, whether the Store opens, the exact code, and which steps changed the behavior. That information prevents support from sending you through the same cache reset repeatedly and helps distinguish a Store problem from Windows servicing or a publisher-side issue.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects and shared DLL problems, while offering settings tweaks, temporary and cache-file cleanup, privacy and vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; its category-based free trial lasts at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, and results vary, so it is not a guaranteed fix for every Store failure.
