If Microsoft Store refuses to download or install an app, first try the built-in cache reset: press Windows key + R, enter wsreset.exe, and select OK. The code in the question is usually written with one zero too many. Microsoft’s Store installation guidance discusses 0x80070057, while 0X800070057 is the literal form many readers report. The same troubleshooting sequence is appropriate when Store downloads remain stuck, fail during installation, or repeatedly ask you to try again.

Work through the steps in order. They begin with a per-app cache reset, then move to updates and regional settings, followed by Store repair or reset. Only after those local fixes should you investigate registration, package, firewall, proxy, or administrator policy conditions.

What the 0x80070057 Store error means

Microsoft does not identify one universal cause, prevalence rate, or guaranteed repair for this Store code. The supported guidance points to several possible failure classes:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A stale or damaged Microsoft Store cache or app state.
  • Pending Windows or Microsoft Store updates.
  • Incorrect Windows time, time-zone, regional, or location settings.
  • Store registration or package-installation problems.
  • Firewall, proxy, Windows Update endpoint, or organization policy restrictions.

That is why a cache reset may solve one computer while another requires a Store reset or an administrator to change a network rule. Use the least disruptive step that matches what you are seeing rather than changing several settings at once.

Why the code may look different

The commonly documented Microsoft Store code is 0x80070057. The title’s 0X800070057 contains an additional zero. Treat the extra-zero version as a likely transcription or display error, but keep it in mind if you are matching the message in an event log or support request. The practical Store remedies below address the documented 0x80070057 installation and update failure.

Before changing anything

Save open work and make sure you can sign in to Windows with an account allowed to change app settings. If the computer belongs to an employer, school, or another organization, note that Store and network policies may be controlled centrally; local changes may not be available or may be reverted.

  • Record the exact app name and whether the failure occurs during download, installation, or an update.
  • Leave security software, firewall protection, and proxy controls enabled while testing.
  • After each step, retry the same Store action once so you know which change affected the result.

1. Reset the Microsoft Store cache with wsreset.exe

This is the quickest and least disruptive remedy. It clears the Store cache without asking you to remove the Store app or alter device-wide policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Type wsreset.exe.
  3. Select OK or press Enter.
  4. Wait while a blank Command Prompt window appears. Microsoft says it closes after about ten seconds, and Microsoft Store then opens automatically.
  5. In Store, try the download or installation again.

Do not close the blank window immediately; it is the reset process running. If Store does not open after the window closes, launch Microsoft Store from the Start menu and repeat the download. A successful cache reset does not prove that the cache was the original cause, so continue to the next relevant check if the code returns.

2. Install pending Windows and Microsoft Store updates

Store components and the Windows services that install packages can be out of sync when updates are waiting. Microsoft’s Store error guidance therefore calls for checking both Windows Update and Store updates.

Check Windows Update

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Windows Update. On some Windows 10 layouts, open Update & Security, then Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install every available update, including updates that require a restart.
  5. Restart Windows when prompted, then return to Microsoft Store and retry the app.

If Windows reports that a restart is pending, complete it before testing Store again. A partially installed update can leave the Store in the same state until the reboot finishes.

Check for Microsoft Store updates

  1. Open Microsoft Store.
  2. Select Library. Depending on the Store version, this may appear as a library icon or as a menu item in the left navigation.
  3. Select Get updates or the equivalent update control.
  4. Allow Store updates to install, then retry the app that failed.

Run the Windows and Store checks separately so that a restart or Store update is not confused with the cache reset. If the Store itself will not open, skip this substep and continue with the Windows settings and repair options below.

3. Verify time, time zone, and location settings

Microsoft includes time and location checks in its Store troubleshooting guidance because licensing, certificates, and regional availability depend on consistent Windows settings. Incorrect values can also make a download appear to stall even when the network is working.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Time & language and open Date & time.
  3. Confirm that the date and clock are correct for your location.
  4. Confirm that the Time zone matches where the PC is being used. If you normally let Windows set it automatically, verify that automatic time and time-zone options are enabled and producing the correct result.
  5. Open the regional or location settings under Time & language and check that the country or region is correct.
  6. Close and reopen Microsoft Store, then retry the download.

Do not select a different country merely to obtain an app that is unavailable in your region. Correct the settings to reflect the computer’s actual location; changing the region can affect Store availability and other regional services.

4. Repair Microsoft Store, then reset it if necessary

Windows provides two app-level actions in Microsoft Store’s Advanced options. Repair attempts to correct the app without clearing its data. Reset is more disruptive and recreates the app’s local state. Try Repair first and use Reset only if Repair does not resolve the download.

Windows 11

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps, then Installed apps.
  3. Find Microsoft Store. Use the search box if necessary.
  4. Select the three-dot menu beside Microsoft Store and choose Advanced options.
  5. Select Repair, wait for it to finish, and test the download.
  6. If the same error remains, return to this page and select Reset, then confirm the action.
  7. Open Microsoft Store again and retry the app.

Windows 10

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Apps, then Apps & features.
  3. Select Microsoft Store and choose Advanced options.
  4. Select Repair first. Retry the installation when it completes.
  5. If Repair fails, select Reset, confirm, and test Store again.

A reset can remove the Store app’s local data and require Store to initialize again. It does not replace Windows or remove your installed desktop applications. If Reset is unavailable, blocked, or immediately fails, the device may be managed by policy or the Store package may have a registration problem; proceed to the checks in the next section.

5. Check Store registration, package installation, and network access

When cache, updates, time, and app repair have not helped, the remaining branches are less local. Microsoft Learn identifies three areas to verify: Store must be registered for the current user, Store must not be blocked from downloading updates, and required endpoints must be reachable through the firewall or proxy.

Confirm that Store is registered for the user

Store registration associates the app package with the Windows user who is trying to install the app. A broken or missing registration can survive a cache reset. On a personal PC, this is a sign that Windows app servicing needs deeper administrative troubleshooting. On a managed PC, registration may be controlled by deployment policy.

Do not delete package folders or run an unverified re-registration script found online. The exact repair method depends on the Windows edition and the scope of the registration problem. If you cannot open Store’s Advanced options or the Store package is absent, contact the device administrator or use Microsoft’s supported Windows app-servicing guidance for your edition.

Check whether package downloads are being blocked

A Store download can fail when Windows Update or Store endpoints are filtered. Firewalls, proxy servers, DNS filtering, and security gateways can all affect access. Keep the protection enabled and ask the person who manages the network to check whether Microsoft’s required endpoints are reachable and whether the proxy allows Store and Windows Update traffic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not disable a firewall or proxy as a permanent “fix.” If a temporary controlled test is necessary, have an administrator perform it, restore the security setting immediately, and document the result. A successful test only identifies a network-policy path; it does not make an unprotected configuration safe.

Use WinGet as an alternative package path

Microsoft documents WinGet commands for finding and installing Store packages. This can help determine whether the problem is limited to the Store interface or affects package acquisition more broadly.

  1. Open Windows Terminal or Command Prompt.
  2. Search for the application by replacing the placeholder with its name:
    winget search <App name>
  3. Review the matching result and then request installation with:
    winget install <App name>
  4. Follow the command-line prompts and test the installed app.

WinGet results depend on the app name and the package source available on that Windows installation. A search result does not guarantee that every Store listing is available through WinGet, and an install failure still points to package, account, or network conditions that need administrator-level review.

6. Identify organization policy or proxy restrictions

Some computers intentionally restrict Microsoft Store. Microsoft documents policy such as RemoveWindowsStore, as well as network filtering that blocks Windows Update endpoints. These conditions are common reasons that a user can perform every local reset correctly and still be unable to download.

  • Personal computer: Check whether security, parental-control, or network software has a Store-blocking rule. Change only settings you understand, and keep protection enabled.
  • Work or school computer: Ask the administrator to verify Store registration, the RemoveWindowsStore policy, proxy rules, firewall reachability, and Windows Update endpoint access.
  • Managed network away from the office: The same policy can apply through device management or a required proxy even when you are using a home connection.

Policy-controlled failures cannot be reliably repaired by repeatedly running wsreset.exe. The administrator needs to change the policy or network rule, after which you can repeat the cache reset and Store download test.

Choosing the next step without making the problem worse

Use this order when several symptoms appear at once. It compares the supported branches by disruption, scope, and who can make the change.

Branch Typical scope Disruption Who controls it
wsreset.exe Store cache Lowest Local user
Windows and Store updates System and Store components Restart may be required Local user or device policy
Time and location correction Current Windows settings Low Local user
Repair Microsoft Store app state Low Local user or device policy
Reset Microsoft Store local data Higher than Repair Local user or device policy
Registration, package, or endpoint review User, device, or network Potentially device-wide Administrator may be required

For a single failed app with an otherwise working Store, start at the cache and update checks. For every Store download failing on a managed computer, move more quickly to registration and policy checks. If only one network blocks the download while another works, ask the network administrator to inspect proxy or firewall access instead of resetting Windows repeatedly.

Common mistakes to avoid

Confusing the code with a different error

Searches for 0X800070057 may return little useful information because the documented Store code is 0x80070057. Include both forms when reporting the problem, and copy the exact text from the Store message or event log.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Resetting before trying Repair

Reset is a valid Microsoft Store remedy, but it is more disruptive than Repair because it recreates the app’s local state. Use Repair first unless Microsoft Store is clearly unusable and you are ready to reset it.

Changing region or disabling security controls

Changing the country setting to bypass availability or turning off firewall and proxy protection can create new problems and does not establish a supported repair. Correct the actual regional settings and have an administrator review network rules instead.

Running generic “error fixer” software

The documented remedies are Windows tools, Store settings, package checks, and administrator-controlled network or policy changes. A generic cleaner or error fixer is not a substitute for those checks, and no tool can guarantee that a Store download will work when a policy or endpoint is blocking it.

When to escalate

Escalate to your administrator or Microsoft support guidance when any of these conditions applies:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Microsoft Store is missing, disabled, or unavailable in Settings.
  • Repair and Reset are blocked or fail immediately.
  • Every Store app fails after the cache and update steps.
  • The device is governed by work, school, family, or security policy.
  • WinGet cannot search or install because package sources or network access are restricted.
  • The firewall or proxy is managed by someone else.

Provide the exact code, the app name, whether the failure occurs during download or installation, the steps already completed, and whether the PC is managed. That information lets an administrator distinguish a local Store-state problem from registration, package, or endpoint policy.

As an optional shortcut after trying the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects, shared DLL files, settings that contribute to CPU, RAM, or disk load, temporary and cache files, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding, and an app-crash log. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary and no tool repairs every crash. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, with a free trial by category for at least two days before a subscription.
