0x8007422 has no confirmed universal Microsoft definition. Reports associate the exact string with Microsoft Store not opening, Store downloads failing, and Minecraft or other Xbox-linked games refusing to sign in. Verify every character first—especially the difference between 0x8007422 and 0x80070422—then follow the steps for the Windows component that displayed it.
What error 0x8007422 means
Microsoft does not define 0x8007422 in the reviewed Common Windows Update errors table. That means the code alone cannot tell you which service or file is broken, and it would be unsafe to apply a fix written for a different error merely because the numbers look similar.

Exact-code reports show several different contexts. A Microsoft Q&A report dated May 5, 2023 described Microsoft Store failing to open, applications refusing to download, and Minecraft or another game refusing Microsoft-account sign-in. A December 28, 2020 report described the same string during a Microsoft Store game download; the user also said Windows Update settings would not load and that attempts to start services returned Error 1058. These are reports of symptoms, not an official definition or a measured success rate.

A Store cache reset is relevant when Store is the failing surface; it is not a general-purpose Windows Update repair. Verify the code and record your Windows build
Before changing anything, capture enough detail to avoid troubleshooting the wrong error and to give Microsoft useful evidence if you need support.
- Reproduce the problem once. Copy the complete message, including the leading
0x, every digit, and the sentence around it. Record whether it appeared in Microsoft Store, an Xbox or Minecraft sign-in, Windows Update, or another installer. - Press Windows key + R, type
winver, and press Enter. Record the Windows edition, version, and OS build shown in the dialog. - Note the exact action that failed: opening Store, starting a download, launching an installed app, signing in, or checking for updates. If only one app fails, write down its name and version if the app displays one.
- Take a screenshot that includes the full error. Keep it with your notes rather than relying on memory; the difference between
0x8007422and0x80070422changes which guidance applies.
Do not silently replace a missing digit, add a zero, or treat an uppercase X as evidence of a different code. The characters after 0x are the part that must match.
Choose the correct fix branch
| Where the message appears | Typical symptom | First action | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Store | Store will not open, or downloads do not start | Reset the Store cache with wsreset |
This targets Store cache behavior; it does not establish the meaning of the code elsewhere |
| One Store application | Most Store apps work, but one app will not launch or update | Use that app’s Repair option, then Reset only if necessary | Reset can remove local app data and sign-in state |
| Xbox-linked game or Minecraft sign-in | The game refuses to sign in, often alongside Store trouble | Make Store usable, run wsreset, then retry the original sign-in or download |
The exact-code reports do not prove that every game sign-in failure has the same cause |
| Windows Update | Update settings will not load or an update fails with the message | Run Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter | Do not assume a Store-cache reset is an Update repair |
Fix Microsoft Store problems with wsreset
When Microsoft Store is the component that fails, wsreset is the first targeted step suggested for reports containing this exact code. It resets the Store cache without asking you to remove the Store application itself.

- Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.

wsresetand press Enter. Do not add quotation marks or other switches. - Wait while the command window runs. It may remain visible briefly and then close; Microsoft Store should open again automatically.
- Repeat the action that originally failed: open the Store page, start the download, launch the app, or retry the game sign-in.
A successful cache reset is indicated by the Store reopening, not by a separate confirmation message. If the same error returns immediately, note whether Store itself opened successfully and whether the failure is limited to one application. That distinction determines the next step.
Do not interrupt the command window by restarting the computer while it is running. If nothing opens after it closes, launch Microsoft Store from the Start menu and test it directly. If Store still cannot open, continue with the app-level controls and preserve the original screenshot.
Repair or reset a single Store app
Use this branch when Store opens and other apps behave normally but one application still fails.
- Open Settings.
- Open Apps, then Installed apps. On some Windows builds the older label is Apps & features.
- Find the affected application, select its menu, and choose Advanced options. The exact labels can vary by Windows version.
- Select Repair and wait for Windows to finish. This is the less destructive option and is the appropriate first attempt.
- Open the app and repeat the failed action.
- If Repair changes nothing, return to the same page and choose Reset. Read the warning first: Reset can clear local app data and remove the app’s saved sign-in state.
After a reset, the application may require you to sign in again or restore preferences. Do not use Reset merely because a different Store app is failing; apply it to the app named in the error or to the app whose behavior reproduces the problem.
When Minecraft or another Xbox-linked game will not sign in
The exact-code reports include games that could not sign in while Microsoft Store functions were also failing. Treat this as a Store-linked problem first rather than assuming the game executable is damaged.
Rank #3
- Confirm that the error is actually shown by Microsoft Store, the game’s sign-in flow, or both. Record the surface in your notes.
- If Store is involved, complete the
wsresetprocedure above and wait for Store to reopen. - Retry the original game sign-in or download. If only the game remains affected, use its Repair control in Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Advanced options when that control is available.
- Use Reset only after Repair fails and only after accepting that local game-app data and sign-in state may be removed.
If the game reports a different code after these steps, stop using the 0x8007422 procedure and record the new message separately. A changed code is new evidence, not confirmation that the first diagnosis was correct.
Fix the problem when Windows Update is the failing surface
When the message appears while Windows Update is checking for, downloading, or installing updates, use the Windows Update troubleshooter instead of assuming the Microsoft Store cache is involved. Microsoft Support states: “If you get an error code while downloading and installing Windows updates, the Update Troubleshooter can help resolve the problem.”
Windows 11
- Open the Get Help application.
- Search for or select the Windows Update troubleshooter.
- Run the guided checks and apply any repair it offers.
- Restart Windows when prompted, then open Windows Update and check again.
Other supported Windows layouts
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Follow the prompts, restart the computer, and check for updates again.
Settings labels differ between Windows editions and builds. Follow the label actually displayed on your system rather than treating a missing menu name as proof that the error has a different cause.

If Windows Update settings themselves will not load, record that symptom and the build from winver. The December 28, 2020 report paired that symptom with service-start attempts returning Error 1058, but that report does not prove that every 0x8007422 case is a disabled-service condition.
Do not confuse 0x8007422 with 0x80070422
The strings look similar but are not interchangeable:
| Code | What is established | What to do |
|---|---|---|
0x8007422 |
No confirmed universal definition in Microsoft’s reviewed common error table; exact-code reports involve Store, downloads, and game sign-in | Verify the surface, use wsreset for Store, or run the Windows Update troubleshooter for Update failures |
0x80070422 |
Microsoft documentation discusses it as a service-disabled condition | Only after confirming every character, follow guidance for checking Windows Update and related services |
Do not enable or disable services based on a partial visual match. If your screen says 0x80070422, switch to that code’s documented instructions; if it says 0x8007422, the service-disabled interpretation has not been established.
If the error remains after the targeted steps
Escalate with evidence instead of repeating unrelated resets. Preserve the screenshot, the exact triggering action, Windows edition and build, affected app, and the result of each step. Include whether Store reopened after wsreset, whether Repair or Reset changed the app, and the complete text of any troubleshooter or service message.

Microsoft’s broader update-troubleshooting guidance includes administrative repair workflows and checking for file corruption when the symptoms support that path. Use those workflows only when the failure is genuinely tied to Windows Update or when the guidance matches the evidence you recorded; do not run administrative repairs simply because the seven-digit code is unfamiliar.
If you contact Microsoft Support or post a follow-up question, provide the build from winver and the exact code in plain text. State whether the problem affects every Store app or only one. This prevents a responder from treating a Store-cache issue, an app-specific issue, and an Update issue as the same failure.
Quick Recap
Common pitfalls and how to avoid them
- Acting on a similar code: Count and copy the characters.
0x8007422is not0x80070422. - Using the wrong branch: A Store cache reset is targeted at Store behavior; an Update troubleshooter is targeted at Windows Update.
- Resetting too early: Repair is less disruptive. Reset can clear local data and sign-in state, so reserve it for an app that still fails after Repair.
- Assuming a user report is a definition: The 2020 and 2023 Q&A reports establish that people saw this string with those symptoms, not that one universal component is always responsible.
- Ignoring build differences: Settings and troubleshooter labels vary by Windows edition and build. Use
winverand follow the controls shown on your device. - Repeating a successful-looking command without testing: After each step, retry the original action and record the result. Store reopening alone does not prove that a download or sign-in problem is fixed.
A compact decision checklist
- Copy the complete message and confirm whether it is
0x8007422or0x80070422. - Run
winverand record edition, version, and OS build. - Identify the failing surface: Store, one Store app, an Xbox-linked game, or Windows Update.
- For Store failures, run
wsreset, wait for Store to reopen, and retry. - For one app, use Repair; use Reset only if needed and after accepting its data impact.
- For Windows Update failures, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, restart, and check again.
- If the exact code is
0x80070422, use that code’s service-disabled guidance instead of this branch. - If nothing changes, preserve the screenshot, build, symptoms, and step results for escalation.
As an optional shortcut, Outbyte PC Repair can check and repair more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, while also offering settings adjustments and cleanup tools. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; its free trial is offered by category for at least two days before a paid subscription, and it complements rather than replaces antivirus protection. Results vary, and no repair tool fixes every crash or Store problem.
