How to Fix Microsoft Error 0x8007422 (and Check for 0x80070422)

First copy the code exactly as it appears. Reports use 0x8007422 for Microsoft Store, Xbox and Windows Update problems, but the string is sometimes a misread or mistyped 0x80070422. Microsoft documents 0x80070422 as a Windows Update service-disabled error, while the exact 0x8007422 string has appeared in Microsoft Q&A reports without one confirmed cause. The correct fix depends on which component is failing.

Use the built-in troubleshooter, check the Windows Update and Background Intelligent Transfer services, reset the Store cache for Store or Xbox failures, and only then repair Windows components with DISM and SFC. An error code is not evidence that your PC contains malware.

1. Verify the code and identify where it appears

Before changing a service or deleting a cache, read the dialog again and compare every character. 0x8007422 and 0x80070422 are different strings; the latter contains an additional zero before the final 422. Copy and paste the code into a text file if possible, or take a screenshot.

Record the symptom

  • Windows Update: the code appears in Settings while checking for, downloading or installing Windows updates.
  • Microsoft Store: an app will not download, install or update.
  • Xbox: the Xbox app or a game installation reports the code.
  • One particular app: other Store downloads work, but one app fails.

Also note your Windows edition and build. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > About. In Windows 10, open Settings > System > About. This information matters when a later support technician needs to reproduce the failure.

Where the error appears Start with Do not assume
Windows Update Get Help/Windows Update troubleshooter, then service checks That the code is automatically 0x80070422
Microsoft Store download wsreset.exe, Windows updates and Store library updates That a Store cache reset repairs every app
Xbox app or game Windows updates, Store updates and wsreset.exe That the Xbox app is the source if the Store service is failing
Only one app Repair, reset or reinstall that app after resetting the Store That Windows itself is corrupted

2. Run Microsoft’s built-in diagnostics

Windows 11

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  3. Find Windows Update and select Run.
  4. Alternatively, open the Get Help app, search for the Windows Update troubleshooter and follow its prompts. Microsoft says Get Help runs diagnostics and attempts common fixes.
  5. Restart when the troubleshooter requests it, then return to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.

Windows 10

  1. Open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
  2. Open Additional troubleshooters, select Windows Update, and choose Run the troubleshooter.
  3. Apply any proposed fix, restart, and check Windows Update again.

Run this path even when the dialog says 0x8007422 rather than 0x80070422. The same user-reported string has been associated with more than one Microsoft component, so the symptom and the diagnostic result are more useful than the digits alone.

3. If the related code is 0x80070422, enable the update services

Microsoft identifies 0x80070422 as a Windows Update service that is disabled or stopped. If your dialog actually says that code, or if Windows Update is the failing component, inspect the services directly.

Check Windows Update

  1. Press Windows key + R, type services.msc, and select OK.
  2. In the list, double-click Windows Update.
  3. In Startup type, choose Automatic.
  4. If Service status is Stopped, select Start. Select Apply, then OK.
  5. Close the Services window, restart the PC, and open Settings > Windows Update to check again.

Check Background Intelligent Transfer Service

  1. Open services.msc again.
  2. Locate Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS).
  3. Open its properties and make sure it is not set to Disabled. If its status is stopped and the Start button is available, select Start.
  4. Select Apply and OK, then retry Windows Update.

BITS can use an on-demand startup configuration on some Windows installations. Do not force a different configuration simply because it differs from another PC; the important checks are that it is not disabled and can start when Windows Update requests it.

4. Reset the Microsoft Store cache for Store or Xbox failures

For a Store download or an Xbox installation that uses Microsoft Store services, run Microsoft’s Store cache reset before attempting deeper repairs.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type wsreset.exe and select OK.
  3. A blank Command Prompt window should appear briefly. Microsoft says it normally closes after about ten seconds, and Microsoft Store then opens automatically.
  4. After the Store opens, select Library > Get updates and let the Store update its installed components.
  5. Restart Windows, open the Store or Xbox app again, and retry the download or installation.

If the Store itself does not open after wsreset.exe finishes, restart once and run the command again. Do not close the blank Command Prompt window while it is working.

Repair or reset one affected app

When only one app fails, use its Windows app controls after the cache reset. On Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the app’s three-dot menu, choose Advanced options, and use Repair. If Repair does not help, return to the same page and choose Reset. On Windows 10, use Settings > Apps > Apps & features, select the app, open Advanced options, and choose Repair or Reset. Reinstall the app from the Store if those options do not restore downloads.

5. Install pending Windows and Store updates

A Store or Xbox client can fail while Windows components are waiting for an update. Complete both update paths before deciding that the code requires system repair.

6. Reset the Windows Update download cache

Microsoft documents resetting the Windows Update SoftwareDistribution cache when update data is damaged or incomplete. This is more disruptive than running the troubleshooter, so use it after the basic service and update checks.

  1. Press Windows key + R, enter services.msc, and select OK.
  2. Double-click Windows Update and select Stop. Leave the Services window open.
  3. Open File Explorer and go to C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution.
  4. Delete the contents of that folder, not the SoftwareDistribution folder itself. If Windows says a file is in use, confirm that Windows Update is stopped before trying again.
  5. Return to Services, open Windows Update, select Start, and choose OK.
  6. Restart the computer, open Windows Update, and select Check for updates.

Clearing this cache removes downloaded update files that Windows can obtain again. It does not remove your personal documents, installed applications or Windows itself.

7. Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

Use system-file repair only after the troubleshooter, services, Store reset and cache reset have failed, or when Windows reports component corruption. You need an elevated Command Prompt.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start and type Command Prompt.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  3. Run this command and wait for it to finish:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

  1. When DISM completes, run:

sfc /scannow

  1. Allow SFC to reach 100 percent. Do not close the window or restart while either scan is running.
  2. Restart Windows after both commands finish, then retry Windows Update, Microsoft Store or Xbox.

Microsoft’s documented order is DISM followed by SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component image that SFC relies on; SFC then checks protected system files. The commands do not identify the original cause of every 0x8007422 report, so repeat the context-specific steps afterward.

8. Use a symptom-based recovery order

The following order avoids changing unrelated settings:

  1. Copy the exact code and record whether the failure is in Windows Update, Store, Xbox or one app.
  2. Run Get Help or the Windows Update troubleshooter for update-related failures.
  3. Check Windows Update and BITS in services.msc if the code is 0x80070422 or Windows Update will not run.
  4. Run wsreset.exe for Store and Xbox download or installation failures.
  5. Update Windows and the Store, then use the affected app’s Repair, Reset or Reinstall option.
  6. Reset SoftwareDistribution if Windows Update downloads remain stuck.
  7. Run DISM and SFC as the final built-in repair step.

9. Common mistakes to avoid

  • Do not merge the two codes. A fix for documented 0x80070422 may not explain an exact 0x8007422 Store report.
  • Do not disable IPv6 or edit the registry as a first response. The available Microsoft guidance does not establish either action as a fix for this code.
  • Do not use a registry cleaner as a substitute for DISM and SFC. It cannot establish whether Windows Update, Store or Xbox is the failing component.
  • Do not permanently disable update services. Stop Windows Update only for the documented cache-reset procedure, then start it again.
  • Do not delete the SoftwareDistribution folder itself. Clear its contents while Windows Update is stopped.
  • Do not interrupt DISM or SFC. An apparently paused percentage can still represent active work.

10. When the code still appears

If the failure remains after the complete sequence, preserve the exact dialog text, the affected component, your Windows edition and build, and which steps completed successfully. A Store-only failure points support toward Store or app servicing; a failure that also affects Windows Update points toward the update services or Windows components. Use the Get Help app to continue Microsoft’s support process and provide those details rather than reporting only the shortened code.

As an optional shortcut after the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can attempt fixes for more than 100 common Windows issues, tune settings, clean temporary and cache files, provide privacy and vulnerability checks, and include tools such as a real-time boost, file shredder and crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; its category-based free trial lasts at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no utility repairs every crash.
